Lifestyle Letter
Happy New Year! I admit it. I got emotionally involved with one of the stories in this month’s Health & Fitness issue. I got too close. I was a nervous mess before the photo shoot, with butterflies doing a number, my head swimming. Athletes. Dedication, finesse, strength, success. I love them all! Meet our first ever Lifestyle Publications All-Star Team! These sixteen amazing girls from high schools in our magazines’ readerships represent the best of the best. And, while their athletic accomplishments are nothing short of spectacular, we pause to applaud because of their balance. Vanesa Rubio is a junior at Cross Keys High School (she's circled in the photo). She is a member of the swimming, track and field, cross country, and wrestling teams. One of my proudest memories was coming in sixth place in the state for the 1600 meter race! I volunteer at an after school program, in my neighborhood, called Presencia . This program provides mentoring, tutoring, and leadership developments to immigrant children. I have had so many wonderful experiences and wish to continue giving back to my community in the future." Regina Metz plays basketball for Pinecrest Academy. Her inspiration? "My older brothers. I have 5 older brothers and I love them and look up to them so much. They have shown me the importance of hard work and are great examples of how to live my life to the fullest no matter where I am or what I'm doing. They are all amazingly grounded and so joyful all the time, which makes me want to be like them even more," she said. I had four big brothers growing up, so I know what Regina means. Happy New Year to all our star athletes and their families. Enjoy this action-packed issue!

Pilates Please Hometown Hero
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARIA SMITH
L
ooking for a new workout routine for 2017? Sick of running? Not coordinated enough
for Zumba? Why not try Pilates? Vernette Channel, who manages and coordinates
the Pilates Program at Life Time Fitness, sat down with Johns Creek Lifestyle to give an expert’s view on what Pilates is and why anyone can do it.
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is not just an exercise. Pilates is a system of physical and mental conditioning that can enhance your physical strength, core stability, flexibility, balance and coordination as well as reduce stress, improve mental focus and foster an improved sense of well-being. WHO CAN DO PILATES?
Pilates is perfect for all ages. Whether a soon-to-be mommy is seeking to increase and maintain stability and coordination with her growing tummy, a senior looking to improve posture and alignment to prevent falls, or the athlete training for performance enhancement, injury prevention or rehabilitation, Pilates is appropriate for all ages. Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta is even launching a Kids Pilates program to improve the posture, coordination and strength of younger generations. WHY IS PILATES SOMETHING WE SHOULD DO?
Pilates allows an opportunity for the body to re-align, re-educate and rehabilitate muscles, joints and bones. The movement patterns provided by Pilates improves circulation, digestion, mental fatigue, respiration and stiffness. These benefits overall can reduce injury, stress, dysfunction and increase longevity and sense of well-being. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED TEACHING PILATES?
As a classically trained ballerina, Pilates was an intimate aspect of my training regimen. After dancing professionally, I transitioned into the academic world by obtaining degrees and certifications in psychology, exercise physiology, rehabilitation, neuroscience and chiropractic. Now as an integrative healthcare practitioner, I see people are desperately seeking to take control over their health. I serve as the vessel that empowers them to regain that control. At Life Time Fitness Alpharetta I am privileged to work with clients hands-on to develop Lifehealthy Time Fitness Alpharetta is located is 855 North Point Pkwy,. LifeTimeFitness. and implement a comprehensive exercise prescription that will promote living. com nutritional Additionally, I have the ability to order labwork, metabolic testing, and facilitate
coaching in order to compliment my clients' exercise prescriptions. WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET STARTED DOING PILATES?
Take baby steps. The first step is to consult your primary physician to discuss any restrictions you may need to address prior to beginning a new exercise program. Next, find a fitness professional for a consultation to help you discover your goals. Finally, don’t forget to set an appropriate plan to achieve them properly and effectively. And then get started! 12

Aesthetic Specialty Centre's Guide to Winter ARTICLE MARIAN MENDENHALL AND SUE G. COLLINS

ocated in Roswell and Lake Oconee, men and women from all over the country find themselves seeking out medical
and cosmetic services provided by the Aesthetic Specialty Centre (ASC). Founded by Dr. Marc E. Yune, a renowned plastic surgeon, and double board certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, head and neck surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Yune and his team offer a range of skin care enhancements, treatments, and services extending past what would be considered topical. Going so far as to take a more holistic, 360 approach with each individual patient. The team at Aesthetic Specialty Centre, includes Dr. Yune, Dr. Raven Elosiebo-Walker, whose strong dermatology background and cosmetic dermatology is a huge asset to the Centre; and Dr. Laura Lile, who has devoted more than two decades to developing, teaching, and practicing the principals of preventative heath care. Included in the ASC’s team is the PA’s, NP’s, and RN’s team; as well as the CLT’s, ALP’s, and Licensed Medical Aestheticians team. Together, the services that ASC are able to offer are unparalleled to competitors in the Atlanta Area. With winter here, the team at ASC, advises that now is the time to ensure individuals are staying on top of their skin care regiments.
SUE FACES AGING AND ITS GLORY
I visited Aesthetic Specialty Centre, the day after my birthday, entering the quiet and sunny office with a headache and a hopeful heart. I’d completed the patient background forms online (easy) so was quickly whisked into a spacious and dimly lit treatment room which resembled a hotel room more than a sterile medical practice office room. I appreciated that and the time Licensed Medical Aesthetician, Adina Sinasohn spent with me. She specialized in anti-aging (yes) and acne treatments and recommended a

spent outdoors. Did you know that after the age of 20, a person produces one percent less collagen in the skin each year? I’m at a 35 percent deficit. In 50 minutes, my skin was micro-planed (a deft straight blade removed what didn’t belong), cleaned, lightly peeled, suctioned, boosted and nourished. The results was a baby bottom-soft face and a list of at-home and in-office treatments recommended by Adina. ASC offers a full menu of cosmetic surgery, dermatology, wellness and aesthetics. Body contouring, breast enhancements, facial rejuvenation and injectable fillers are carefully considered, with Dr. Marc Yune at the helm. His team of welcoming and educated professionals gave me the confidence to dive into 2017. I will be back!

Parting Thoughts
Fitness to Last a Lifetime WORDS JORDANA KLEIN
B
orn and raised in Alpharetta, as an only Jor dan child, I grew up as “Mommy’s aK le in girl and Daddy’s boy.” With a passion for all things sporty while still enjoying the newest trends with my gals, I’ve always recognized that fitness would hold a special place in my life. But, I never recognized how much I’d rely on my own two feet to create endless opportunities that I’m oh so thankful for. Naturally, my parents allowed me to test out all the available local sports and camps at one point or another, offering up an afternoon soccer clinic before a weekend ice skating lesson. This jampacked schedule allowed for an introduction to just about any sport available, and, looking back, I could not be happier that I had these opportunities. From a list of over a dozen different options throughout my elementary and middle school years at Woodward Academy, I found my true passions through volleyball and tennis. With volleyball being the ultimate team sport and tennis among the lone, individual games, I recognized that I truly chose the best of both worlds. Volleyball included all the fun that is finding your “pepper partner” while engaging in footwork drills, agility training, and the occasional distance run. Tennis included the grind of private lessons mixed with the Academy training alongside dozens of other players attempting to reach their full potential. Line drills, suicides, and sprints filled my evenings to propel my tennis talents to the next level. As a teenager, I would not have believed you if you told me that, a decade later, I would have competed in my first half marathon, completed

four years of Division I college tennis, workout almost daily, and actually enjoy that afternoon run. Let alone have a stable career that’s centered around fitness and tennis. Absolutely unfathomable. From elementary school, the complaints surrounding that burdensome Presidential Fitness Test still haunt me to this day. Those timed-mile tests each year pushed me to the limit, and I recall even training for Field Day at the end of the year so that I could throw that football better than any girl out there. Now, I can proudly say that I rely daily on my fitness routine to keep me sane, and, well, fit. After captaining the Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis Team and enduring four years of collegiate level strength and conditioning, you’d think that I reached my peak potential as I threw on that cap and gown in May 2015. However, since that day, I’ve taken matters into my own hands. I run or visit the gym just about every day to maintain strength and continue pushing myself. Without a strict goal in mind, like the upcoming tennis matches I trained for, I now workout and focus on my fitness just for me. After all those years of being pushed, I’m now the one doing the pushing. Even my career is structured around tennis and f itness. From producing the latest magazine story on local workout outings to producing new content on my tennis travel blog, Tennis Itinerary, I’m constantly utilizing f itness in both my personal and corporate life. Thanks to a childhood immersed in the f itness f ield, I’m proud to say that I plan to maintain this healthy lifestyle for many years to come.
