In the meantime, enjoy this issue. We chatted with interior decorators to find out how their process works. Diane Johnson takes the time to interview her clients and is a whiz at translating their tastes (which are not always easy to verbalize) into furnishings that express personality plus function. My home is full of our collections of books, vintage games, antique Chinese checkerboards and cool old gumball machines. One of my favorite pieces of furniture is an antique Chinese trousseau cabinet we picked up when we lived in Hong Kong. The merchant explained that the bride's family would pack her personal items and collected home furnishings in this cabinet and her brothers would carry it to the happy couple's new home. We use it as a bar cabinet storing glassware and booze... perhaps my own personal trousseau? Enjoy November and have a Happy Thanksgiving. Don't forget to head to our website and vote! xo

Beginning with the Pop Art movement, there has been a prevalent cultural misunderstanding that new and visionary ideas belong only to the young. The truth is, that as artists age, the chances increase for brilliant new expressions with a marked richness in their art. The premise of the “40 over 40” invitational exhibit is to show that fresh ideas and talent come from people of all ages, and that artists with decades of life experience have even more to offer. "40 over 40" presents works by Atlanta–area artists ages 40 and over, whose careers range from newly discovered to seasoned. Under the curatorial efforts of Elyse Defoor of Buckhead, the exhibit offers fresh counterbalance to the art-world ageism faced by many artists during their later years. "When considering the impressive art made by famous older artists later in life such as Georgia O’Keeffe, and the many well-known mature contemporary artists such as Kara Walker, Anish Kapoor, and 100-year-old Carmen Herrera, this show champions artists who continue to take risks, explore, and do the work that they are meant to do,” says curator Defoor. “40 over 40”, at EBD4, opens with a celebratory reception on Saturday, November 11, 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm. on Lake Windward two years ago, the homeowner kept the Alpharetta designer on speed dial. Ms. Johnson and her team managed the design during a total home renovation. Builders took the home down to the studs and even replaced the entire outer facade of the house. “The homeowner loved her lot, and didn't want to move homes, but just wanted a dramatic change,” says Diane, whose firm redesigned the two main floors now ranging from traditional to transitional with modern art. The terrace level now is contemporary and opens up to the outdoor terrace overlooking the lake. For Diane, conversation is crucial to her suc-

cess--and her clients’ happiness. When Diane started the project, she sat down with the client and discovered the family does a lot of entertaining, hosting company functions and parties. She asked about color and style preferences and together they chose grays and yellows, with subtle silver and gold accents. On the terrace level, a wall of doors open completely to extend the living space, spilling out into the inviting terrace outside.
