Fall Flavors

October 2026 PUBLISHER

And just like that, summer slips away…and in waft the sweet scents of fall. The leaves begin to change, temperatures (finally!) begin to cool down, sunsets come sooner and bonfires begin to crackle in cozy firepits. Our cravings shift toward comforting flavors that warm both body and soul. October is one of our most delectable issues of the year, and this month we’re celebrating the food and drink that makes our city such a delight for the senses. We had the privilege of sitting down with the new owners of Brooklyn Pasta & Pizza, to learn all about their made fresh daily menu and what it’s like to breathe new life into a Cincinnati icon for authentic New York Style Pizza. You’re in for a treat, so get ready to savor every bite! Perhaps you’re entertaining a bit more this fall? Discover Rocktails Bars on Wheels–MayaLou and Kristen pour out an amazing amount of knowledge and know-how with every custom cocktail they concoct. Balanced, sophisticated and downright fun, they’re the perfect addition to every occasion you’re planning this fall. There’s an art to creating a dish that not only satisfies your taste buds but also stirs memories of home. For me, the smells of fall bring back memories of creating something new in my mom’s kitchen. Fresh pressed apple cider, pumpkin pie and hearty chicken soup warm the soul. Our favorite tradition used to be heading to Rouster’s Apple house, picking our own apples and then heading home to make applesauce, pies and anything else we could imagine. Food has a unique way of connecting us to our past while bringing us together in the present. Whether you’re enjoying a meal out with friends or hosting a cozy dinner at home, these shared moments are what make life flavorful. Here’s to savoring every bite this season!

Mother & son duo Kim Hester & Chase Hester are the new owners of Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta in Montgomery.

For Chase and Kim Hester, owning a restaurant is about much more than serving a good meal. At Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta in Montgomery, this son and mother duo are about creating a place where people feel welcome, employees feel valued and a family works toward something together. “Our inspiration to open the restaurant together was a genuine love of food and people,” Kim says. “To bring those two things together, in a casual, affordable, family-friendly environment is the best of both worlds.” That philosophy comes through in a menu built around familiar Italian-American favorites. Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta serves New York-style pizzas made with freshly prepared dough and house-made tomato sauce, along with pasta, hand-rolled meatballs, calzones, stromboli, subs, salads and more. The menu also includes family-style specials and catering options, making it as suited to a quick lunch as it is to a family gathering. But the Hesters’ vision for the restaurant goes beyond what arrives at the table. To them, the heart of the business is closer to home. “Running a family-owned business is very special to us!” Kim says. “We are a close-knit family, and we’ve always had each other’s backs. It’s a special feeling to look over on a Friday night and see one of us working hard as a team. It’s heartwarming!” For Chase, the family connection also creates a foundation of trust. “Family-owned means we can fully trust each other and that we share the same values and goals for the restaurant,” he says. That shared purpose extends beyond the restaurant’s walls. The Hesters make community involvement part of their business philosophy, partnering with non-profit organizations including Operation Give Back, 1N5, Joshua’s Place, the Varner Foundation, Painting with Purpose, Shoes for the Shoeless and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Their guiding principle is simple: “Always do the right thing.” Working together has also given Chase and Kim an opportunity to learn from one another. For Chase, the lesson from his mom is straightforward: “To always be kind and positive.” CONTINUED >

Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta follows time-tested recipes for authentic New York-style pizza.

Kim sees something equally valuable in her son: perseverance. “Fryers and refrigerators stop working, employees call in sick,” she explains. “Through the easy and difficult days, Chase plows through, even-keeled and always focused on the big picture. I, on the other hand, am trying very hard to be more like Chase!” It is that ability to keep moving forward that shapes their vision for what comes next. The Hesters hope to bring Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta to additional locations, expand their charitable giving and continue growing the community of employees and customers around them. The most telling part of their story is not where they hope to go. It is what they hope people experience along the way. “We hope that when customers walk in, they feel the genuine care and concern for others that we display each day,” Kim says. For the Hesters, family extends to the employees who show up on a busy weekend, the customers who return for a favorite pizza and the neighbors who become familiar faces. They share a belief that a restaurant can nourish a community in more ways than one. At Brooklyn Pizza & Pasta, food brings people together. When a family builds something side by side, the recipe can become something bigger than the meal itself.

A Heart for Caring: Meet Dawn Bonnett, Seasons’ Health & Wellness Director

For Dawn Bonnett, nursing has always been about more than providing care. It is about knowing the person behind the care plan—their history, family, stories, and experiences. As Health & Wellness Director at Seasons Retirement Community, Bonnett brings that philosophy to work every day, leading a team dedicated to helping Assisted Living residents feel safe, valued, and at home. Her path to nursing wasn’t always obvious. Bonnett began college studying business administration but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit. Her mother encouraged her to try nursing, recognizing her compassion and love of helping others. She immediately knew she had found her calling. Bonnett joined Seasons in 2012 as a nurse aide, working weekends in Skilled Nursing while attending nursing school. Having previously worked

through an agency at numerous senior living communities, she quickly recognized something different about Seasons. “The community was clean, the environment was welcoming, but what really made the difference was the team,” she says. “Everyone was so helpful, and the teamwork was undeniable.” More than a decade later, that teamwork remains at the heart of what Bonnett believes makes Seasons special. Her years providing direct resident care also shaped the leader she is today. As a floor nurse, she often considered ways to make residents’ experiences even better. Becoming Health & Wellness Director gave her the opportunity to bring those ideas and firsthand experiences into leadership. The relationships remain her favorite part. One resident arrived at Seasons in 2012 and passed away in 2026. Throughout the years, whenever she saw Bonnett, she would point to her and say, “You were the first person I met here.” For Bonnett, it was a reminder that even the smallest interactions can leave a lasting impression. “Every resident has something to teach me,” she says. “Getting to know their history and experiences is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.” Outside Seasons, Bonnett’s greatest joy is her family, especially her seven grandchildren. She is passionate about fitness and was also a competitive cheerleader and cheer captain growing up. Ultimately, Bonnett hopes families entering Seasons Assisted Living immediately feel warmth and belonging. “I want them to feel the culture, the teamwork, and the genuine care that goes into making our community feel like home,” she says. Her message to families is simple: “Our residents are treated like family, 110% of the time.”

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy! Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint—be sure to cover everything! You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

BAR

For Kristen Kreft and MayaLou Banatwala, every event begins with a conversation and ends with a little bit of magic. There is a sparkle to a Rocktails Brands Bars on Wheels event. The drinks are colorful and artfully garnished, the bar becomes part of the décor and the professional bartenders know how to focus the spotlight on the celebration. Beneath the presentation is something more intentional: two longtime friends who have built a business around creativity, hospitality and the belief that no event should feel ordinary.

Kristen shows off Bars On Wheels' creations. The company takes pride in overdelivering to wow their guests and make every event special.

MayaLou pours champagne over rock candy stir sticks to create a unique cocktail to match a client’s special event.

“We are all about swagger-style presentation and respect for the honoree of each event,” Kristen explains. Kristen and MayaLou first became friends while working as Mixologists at Japp’s, a classic cocktail bar downtown, focusing on the art of a well-made cocktail, the story behind it and flawless presentation. “We just worked side-by-side so well together,” says Kristen. “We both have been bartending since we could walk,” MayaLou adds. In 2017, that rhythm grew into Rocktails, a cocktail concept inspired by their shared love of music and storytelling. The two creatives wrote and released two music-history cocktail books. “The books grew out of a pop-up program where we would take over a bar and curate it based on the musicians that we booked for the night,” shares MayaLou. Those experiences led to consulting work for Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati. In 2023, they purchased the Bars on Wheels business (established in 1989) and began bringing their creative sensibility along with their luxury service, attention to detail and inclusive mocktail- and cocktail-forward vision to private beverage catering. Today, Bars on Wheels provides full-service mobile bar and beverage catering for weddings, corporate gatherings, private parties and other celebrations. The team handles details from bars, glassware and ice to mixers, garnishes and professional bartending, allowing hosts to enjoy their guests instead of managing the bar. “We like to get to know you,” says Kristen. They get to know clients’ stories and add details that can transform the event. A couple who met at the beach might inspire a signature blue cocktail. A 50th anniversary celebration calls for a surprise bourbon and scotch bar. Bars on Wheels’ approach is decidedly culinary. They create drinkable art. Kristen and MayaLou craft cocktails and mocktails from fresh ingredients, housemade syrups and dehydrated fruit and herbs they grow themselves. They believe nonalcoholic drinks deserve the same creativity and care as cocktails, creating versatile options so everyone can raise a glass. “Everybody deserves to have a celebratory drink in their hand,” says Kristen. That attention to detail extends to their philosophy of service. “We're a green light company. The answer is yes, and then we'll figure it out,” says Kristen. Their goal is not to execute a rote package but to listen, adapt and find the unexpected detail CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/I N D I A N HI L LO H

that makes a celebration feel uniquely its own. Sometimes that means adding edible flowers. Sometimes it means creating a surprise drink that was never on the original plan. “Special surprises” even appears as a line item on their event quotes. “Surprises are so much fun for us,” says MayaLou. Joy is the secret ingredient behind the Bars On Wheels wow factor. When two people who love music, cocktails, performance and each other’s company bring that enthusiasm to an event, guests can feel it. The result is rockstar culinary artistry, a little bit of theater and a whole lot of celebration, delivered with personal attention that makes people feel seen. Bars On Wheels is about more than what goes into the glass; it is about the stories, surprises and shared moments that happen around it. This fall, make the Brown Sugar Cardamom Latte your order, pairing its warm, gently spiced sweetness with a Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake. Beyond coffee and pastries, the café serves breakfast and lunch along with cocktails, beer and wine, making it an easy choice for everything from a leisurely morning to an afternoon meeting. The European Café creates an inviting gathering place where regulars and newcomers can enjoy a meal, sip something delicious and linger over good conversation. Online ordering and carryout are also available for those days when cozy means being at home.

The Madison Place is designed to be a part of the life of the neighborhood. A cross between a comfortable living room and a library, it offers a variety of seating: couches, tables, arm chairs and stools. It has a fireplace, games, books and even a grand piano, creating plenty of reasons to stay awhile. On any given morning, you might find friends catching up, someone tucked into a quiet corner with a book or a neighbor settling in to work. For fall, try the Pistachio Maple Latte, a warm, nutty specialty drink with just enough maple sweetness to evoke the season without feeling like the typical fall latte. Pair it with Fredrick Baudry’s almond croissant for a delightful morning treat. Alongside its full coffee and espresso menu, The Madison Place serves breakfast, lunch and locally made pastries, with hospitality at the heart of the experience.

Wellness Corner

October has me craving something warm and slow-cooked. This is a family favorite in our house, hearty and comforting, but packed full of vegetables, so it’s the good kind of full. It’s simple, satisfying and perfect for cooler nights. Give it a try this season; I think it’ll become a favorite in your house, too.

Rustic Slow Cooker Hamburger & Vegetable Soup Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 7-8 hours (low) or 4-5 hours (high) Servings: 8

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

1 Tablespoon olive oil 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 yellow onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 4 carrots, sliced 3 celery stalks, diced 2 Yukon gold potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 14.5-ounce cans fireroasted diced tomatoes 3 Tablespoons tomato paste 5 cups beef broth 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

• 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning • 2 bay leaves • 2 teaspoons sea salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) • 1 cup fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces • 1 cup frozen corn • 1 cup frozen peas • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

1. Heat the olive oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until deeply browned with some crispy edges, about 7-8 minutes. Don’t rush this step. That browning is where the flavor lives. 2. Add the onion to the skillet with the beef and cook 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant. 3. Move the beef mixture to your slow cooker. Add the carrots, celery, potatoes, tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine. 4. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours, until the potatoes are fork-tender and the broth has deepened into a rich, savory reddish-brown. 5. In the last 30 minutes of cooking, stir in the green beans, corn and peas. Cover and cook until the green beans are bright and just tender. 6. Remove the bay leaves. Taste and adjust salt and pepper. Ladle into bowls and top with fresh parsley. Keeps in the fridge for up to 4 days; freezes up to 3 months.
