Fall Flavors

October 2026 PUBLISHER

And just like that, summer slips away…and in waft the sweet scents of fall. The leaves begin to change, temperatures (finally!) begin to cool down, sunsets come sooner and bonfires begin to crackle in cozy firepits. Our cravings shift toward comforting flavors that warm both body and soul. October is one of our most delectable issues of the year, and this month we’re celebrating the food and drink that makes our city such a delight for the senses. We’ve slipped in some recipes that are sure to become fall favorites–cozy, but fresh pizza recipes that, when paired with the right red, will leave you thinking you’re in the heart of Tuscany in the fall. Perhaps you’re entertaining a bit more this fall? Discover Rocktails Bars on Wheels–MayaLou and Kristen pour out an amazing amount of knowledge and know-how with every custom cocktail they concoct. Balanced, sophisticated and downright fun, they’re the perfect addition to every occasion you’re planning this fall. There’s an art to creating a dish that not only satisfies your taste buds but also stirs memories of home. For me, the smells of fall bring back memories of creating something new in my mom’s kitchen. Fresh pressed apple cider, pumpkin pie and hearty chicken soup warm the soul. Our favorite tradition used to be heading to Rouster’s Apple house, picking our own apples and then heading home to make applesauce, pies and anything else we could imagine. Food has a unique way of connecting us to our past while bringing us together in the present. Whether you’re enjoying a meal out with friends or hosting a cozy dinner at home, these shared moments are what make life flavorful. Here’s to savoring every bite this season!

BAR For Kristen Kreft and MayaLou Banatwala, every event begins with a conversation and ends with a little bit of magic. There is a sparkle to a Rocktails Brands Bars on Wheels event. The drinks are colorful and artfully garnished, the bar becomes part of the décor and the professional bartenders know how to focus the spotlight on the celebration. Beneath the presentation

is something more intentional: two longtime friends who have built a business around creativity, hospitality and the belief that no event should feel ordinary. “We are all about swagger-style presentation and respect for the honoree of each event,” Kristen explains. Kristen and MayaLou first became friends while working as Mixologists at Japp’s, a classic cocktail bar downtown, focusing on the art of a well-made cocktail, the story behind it and flawless presentation. “We just worked side-by-side so well together,” says Kristen. “We both have been bartending since we could walk,” MayaLou adds. In 2017, that rhythm grew into Rocktails, a cocktail concept inspired by their shared love of music and storytelling. The two creatives wrote and released two music-history cocktail books. “The books grew out of a pop-up program where we would take over a bar and curate it based on the musicians that we booked for the night,” shares MayaLou. Those experiences led to consulting work for Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati. In 2023, they purchased the Bars on Wheels business (established in 1989) and began bringing their creative sensibility along with their luxury service, attention to detail and inclusive mocktail- and cocktail-forward vision to private beverage catering. Today, Bars on Wheels provides full-service mobile bar and beverage catering for weddings, corporate gatherings, private parties and other celebrations. The team handles details from bars, glassware and ice to mixers, garnishes and professional bartending, allowing hosts to enjoy their guests instead of managing the bar. “We like to get to know you,” says Kristen. They get to know clients’ stories and add details that can transform the event. A couple who met at the beach might inspire a signature blue cocktail. A 50th anniversary celebration calls for a surprise bourbon and scotch bar. Bars on Wheels’ approach is decidedly culinary. They create drinkable art. Kristen and MayaLou craft cocktails and mocktails from fresh ingredients, house-made syrups and dehydrated fruit and herbs they grow themselves. They believe nonalcoholic drinks deserve the same creativity and care as cocktails, creating versatile options so everyone can raise a glass. “Everybody deserves to have a celebratory drink in their hand,” says Kristen. That attention to detail extends to their philosophy of service. “We're a green light company. The answer is yes, and then we'll figure it out,” says Kristen. Their goal is not to execute a rote package but to listen, adapt and find the unexpected detail that makes a celebration feel uniquely its own. Sometimes that means adding edible flowers. Sometimes it CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / HY D E PA R K

means creating a surprise drink that was never on the original plan. “Special surprises” even appears as a line item on their event quotes. “Surprises are so much fun for us,” says MayaLou. Joy is the secret ingredient behind the Bars On Wheels wow factor. When two people who love music, cocktails, performance and each other’s company bring that enthusiasm to an event, guests can feel it. The result is rockstar culinary artistry, a little bit of theater and a whole lot of celebration, delivered with personal attention that makes people feel seen. Bars On Wheels is about more than what goes into the glass; it is about the stories, surprises and shared moments that happen around it. Kristen and MayaLou’s music-history cocktail books and cocktail kits are available for purchase online. Deeper Roots Coffee 9340 Montgomery Road, Montgomery | 513.745.0854 | DeeperRootsCoffee.com/montgomery Some coffee shops feel like a stop along the way; Deeper Roots Coffee’s Montgomery location feels more like a return. The shop traces its roots to the Montgomery Farmers Market, where they served coffee for six years before opening its cafés. Today, it welcomes the community to gather over coffee and pastries. For a distinctly fall sip, order the Maple Leaf Cortado, made with local maple syrup, Alchemy espresso and orange peel steamed into the milk. Pair it with a Cinnamon Roll from their in-house bakery for a cozy moment. Join this community-minded shop in its Community Give Back program—with every purchase of their Big Picture blend, they give to a local and international organization.

The Hotel Rambler Coffee Shop 7711 Roosa Street, Montgomery | 513.954.4100 | TheHotelRambler.com Step inside The Hotel Rambler’s charming coffee shop to enjoy a fall treat. Tucked into the boutique hotel’s lobby, this mid-century-inspired café pairs warm design with Cincinnati-based La Terza coffee, fresh pastries and an easygoing place to linger. The season’s must-try is the Pure Pumpkin Latte, made with real pumpkin purée, La Terza espresso, steamed milk and vanilla, then finished with pumpkin pie spice. Pair it with one of their housemade coffee cakes, poptarts or scones for a cozy morning treat. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy the space, making it a destination for locals and visitors alike.

The Bow Tie Café 1101 St. Gregory Street, Mt. Adams | 513.621.2233 | BowTieCafe.com Nestled in Mt. Adams, The Bow Tie Café exclusively serves Intelligentsia Coffee and hosts a European-inspired setting, including a three-tiered patio and fountains. Don’t miss their hearty Breakfast Tacos for a playful pairing that feels right at home on a crisp, fall morning. With a welcoming space for all ages and deep community roots, The Bow Tie Café makes an inviting stop before a stroll or simply whenever you need a cozy pick-me-up.

Follow your nose to Montgomery’s cozy European Café, the kind of neighborhood spot where you can count on a housemade pastry and authentic European coffee. Espresso drinks are crafted in the traditional way, giving each cup a thoughtful, classic feel. This fall, make the Brown Sugar Cardamom Latte your order, pairing its warm, gently spiced sweetness with a Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake. Beyond coffee and pastries, the café serves breakfast and lunch along with cocktails, beer and wine, making it an easy choice for everything from a leisurely morning to an afternoon meeting. The European Café creates an inviting gathering place where regulars and newcomers can enjoy a meal, sip something delicious and linger over good conversation. Online ordering and carryout are also available for those days when cozy means being at home.

The Madison Place is designed to be a part of the life of the neighborhood. A cross between a comfortable living room and a library, it offers a variety of seating: couches, tables, arm chairs and stools. It has a fireplace, games, books and even a grand piano, creating plenty of reasons to stay awhile. On any given morning, you might find friends catching up, someone tucked into a quiet corner with a book or a neighbor settling in to work. For fall, try the Pistachio Maple Latte, a warm, nutty specialty drink with just enough maple sweetness to evoke the season without feeling like the typical fall latte. Pair it with Fredrick Baudry’s almond croissant for a delightful morning treat. Alongside its full coffee and espresso menu, The Madison Place serves breakfast, lunch and locally made pastries, with hospitality at the heart of the experience.

THE BACKYARD Not long ago, an outdoor pizza oven in someone’s backyard was rare, and the kind of purchase that hinted at a serious devotion to entertaining. What was once a niche indulgence has become a fixture on patios and terraces across the country, and the appeal is easy to understand once you’ve stood next to one. These ovens climb past 900 degrees, hot enough to turn out a proper Neapolitan crust in under two minutes, with the same char and blistered edge you’d find at a well-regarded pizzeria. What’s driven the shift is accessibility without any real compromise on quality. The newer generation of countertop ovens, running on gas or wood pellets, has made that level of heat achievable without a masonry install or a small fortune. The result is

a dinner party that essentially hosts itself: guests gather around the oven the way they once gathered around a fire pit, the dough gets stretched and topped in full view, and the meal becomes entertainment rather than a meal quietly assembled in a kitchen. Part of the appeal of a pizza oven is how quickly it rewards experimentation. With a cook time measured in minutes rather than hours, there’s little downside to trying an unexpected topping or a pairing you wouldn’t normally think to combine. Fig and prosciutto, hot honey and pepperoni, nothing is really off limits once the oven is hot. That said, it helps to start from a solid foundation. Below are tried and true recipes that are guaranteed to be crowd pleasers no matter who’s on the guest list.

CLASSIC MARGHERITA Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • • 1 ball pizza dough, • room temperature • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce • • • 4 to 5 ounces fresh

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved A handful of fresh basil leaves Olive oil Flaky salt

mozzarella, torn into pieces INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough into a round. 2. Spread the tomato sauce over the top, leaving the edge bare. 3. Scatter the cherry tomatoes over the sauce, then add the mozzarella in a few big clusters. 4. Bake until the crust is puffed and golden with dark spots. In an outdoor oven this takes about 90 seconds. In a home oven, bake at 500 degrees on a hot pizza stone for 8 to 10 minutes. 5. Top with fresh basil, a drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of flaky salt.

INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, • room temperature • • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced • • 1 tablespoon butter • • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/2 pound Italian sausage, casing removed

3 tablespoons tomato sauce 1 cup shredded mozzarella Fresh parsley, chopped Salt, pepper, and a pinch of dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook the onion low and slow in butter with the sugar and a pinch of salt for 30 to 40 minutes, until soft and deep golden. Set aside. 2. Brown the sausage in a skillet, breaking it into small pieces, then drain. 3. Stretch the dough, spread the sauce, then top with mozzarella, sausage, and the caramelized onion. 4. Bake until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling. 5. Finish with parsley and a light dusting of oregano.

LOADED VEGGIE Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce • 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced into rings • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced

• • • • • •

1/4 red onion, thinly sliced A handful of baby spinach 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tablespoons chopped olives Shaved parmesan Olive oil, salt, and pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough and spread the sauce, leaving the edge bare. 2. Add the mozzarella, then top with the mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper. 3. Toss the spinach with a little olive oil, then scatter it on with the tomatoes and olives. 4. Bake until the crust is golden and the vegetables have softened. 5. Finish with shaved parmesan

INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 1/3 cup basil pesto, plus extra for serving • 1 cup shredded mozzarella • 1 cup cooked chicken breast, diced

• 1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped • Fresh parsley, chopped • Salt and pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough and spread the pesto over the top in place of tomato sauce. 2. Top with mozzarella, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. 3. Bake until the cheese is melted and the crust is charred in spots. This one cooks a little faster since there’s no wet sauce, so keep an eye on it. 4. Top with parsley and serve with extra pesto on the side for dipping.

Whichever you make first, go easy on the toppings. A hot pizza oven cooks a pie in under two minutes, and a heavy pie won’t cook through in time. Keep it light and let the oven do the work.

Note: This granola can be stored in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. While this granola is made with gluten free ingredients, I recommend using certified gluten free ingredients if needed . Yogurt can be made with a suitable dairy-free alternative if you need this recipe to be dairy-free and the honey can be swapped for pure maple syrup to make the dairyfree yogurt recipe suitable for a vegan diet. The granola and the yogurt can each be enjoyed on their own, but they complement each other so nicely! This Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait is a perfect way to celebrate autumn’s most famous flavors in a nutritious way! Pumpkin, maple syrup and warm spices, such as cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice, give cozy vibes that are traditionally found in baked goods this time of year. However, while pumpkin bread, muffins, cookies and other fall flavored baked goods are certainly delicious and should be enjoyed, this Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait provides the satisfaction of those fall flavors in a lighter way, while providing ample protein and fiber. It is the perfect, slightly sweet and balanced way to start the day – or to enjoy anytime! Alyssa Lavy, MS, RD, CDN, CPT is a registered dietitian, personal trainer and mom of 2.
