Women of Impact: Leading, Creating, and Inspiring Change

I imagine a world in which all women are leaders of their own lives—waking up each morning inspired to cultivate deeper relationships, energized to nurture their families, and empowered to impact their communities. There is a palpable presence when you’re in the company of a visionary woman, one who expresses her personal truth and designs a life of unique purpose and influence. She is unstoppable. Her outer world reflects the beauty of her inner world.

I believe the path to living a life of choice and freedom lies in the courage to trust our intuition, embrace uncertainty, and lean into the risk of pursuing our deepest desires. I believe we attract what we are. Whatever we long for—be, do, speak, and act in alignment with that vision.

Our May "Ladies" issue spotlights the journeys and achievements of seven incredible women who are changing Cincinnati. These women—mothers, daughters, sisters, neighbors, and entrepreneurs—demonstrate what it means to show up with intention, creating space for what matters most. Day after day, they are learning, growing, teaching, leading, refining, and, most importantly, taking action.

These pages celebrate women like Katie Nzekwo, co-executive director of Found Village, a program and lifeline that meets young people where they are, ensuring every child, especially those aging out of foster care, knows they are valued and capable of breaking cycles of poverty and systemic barriers. We also spoke with Maria Liliana, founder of uGOgelato. Raised in a family of gelato makers, what began as childhood curiosity soon became a deep passion for transporting people to Italy with every bite.

From food and fashion to creating empowering spaces and experiences, we hope this issue inspires you to reflect on the ways you are cultivating deeper relationships, nurturing your family, or empowering your community. The journey to living a life of truth, intention, impact, and service is uncharted—each of us follows a unique path. But maybe it begins with a simple pause and the question: How can I step more fully into my unique vision and impact?

The Women Changing Cincinnati

7 WOMEN, 7 LEGACIES: THE CINCINNATI TRAILBLAZERS YOU NEED TO KNOW

ARTICLE BY HEATHER SPINKS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BONNIE PHILLIPS

Katie Nzekwu Co-Executive Director of Found Village

Katie Nzekwu knows firsthand the power of being seen, believed in, and supported. At 15, she found herself in juvenile detention, questioning her worth. But a village— her grandmother, her community—helped her rewrite her story. Today, as the co-executive director of Found Village, she’s doing the same for Cincinnati’s youth.

Found Village isn’t just a program; it’s a lifeline. Katie and her team meet young people where they are, offering deep, consistent relationships that foster healing and growth. From providing safe, trusted adults to teaching

life skills and celebrating milestones, they do life together. They ensure every child, especially those aging out of foster care, knows they are valued and capable of breaking cycles of poverty and systemic barriers.

For Katie, this isn’t just work—it’s a calling. She believes legacy isn’t about what you do, but who you become. Through her relentless commitment, she’s shaping futures, transforming communities, and proving that a small group of dedicated people can, indeed, change the world. CONTINUED

Chef Gelatiere

Founder of uGOgelato

For the founder of uGOgelato, Maria believes that gelato is more than just a dessert—it’s a love letter to family, tradition, and the art of craftsmanship. Raised in a family of gelato makers, she grew up watching her father perfect the delicate balance of flavors that define true Italian gelato. What started as childhood curiosity soon became a deep passion, leading her to create uGOgelato, a brand that blends old-world authenticity with modern experiences.

Each scoop tells a story. Whether served in their retail shop or from their beautifully designed catering cart at special events, her gelato is crafted with the same techniques and care that have been passed down through generations. She believes in evoking joy, nostalgia, and connection, transporting people to Italy with every bite. Catering brings her the most joy, allowing her to be part of life’s sweetest moments, from intimate gatherings to large celebrations.

Through perseverance and dedication, she has built more than a business—she has created an experience rooted in passion and quality. On hard days, the smiles of her customers and the unwavering support of her husband and daughter

remind her why she started. More than anything, she hopes to leave a legacy of authenticity, hard work, and joy, inspiring others, especially her daughter, to pursue what they love with heart and dedication.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? You’ll never have all the answers, and you’ll never feel 100% ready. But passion, curiosity, and consistency will take you far. Stay true to your craft, never compromise on quality, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. Because when you do what you love, every scoop becomes a story worth sharing.

WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY

ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE

From Music Hall to suburban side streets, countless Greater Cincinnati buildings deliver charming curb appeal, thanks to attractive window boxes and the flowers and decorative plants contained within. Many of those enhancements have been installed and maintained by the aptly named WOW Windowboxes company.

“We service about 1,500 to 2,000 clients each season,” reports Bret Schneider, owner of WOW Windowboxes. “Each client, no matter the size or scope, receives our unparalleled attention to detail and dedication to delivering a WOW-worthy experience.”

WOW Windowboxes has been designing and installing windowboxes for more than 15 years.

“Since 2009, we’ve been on a mission to brighten homes and businesses with our signature style and exceptional service,” Schneider says. “Even small touches can make a big impact.”

It all began in a garage. Schneider’s mother, Sue, dreamed of having attractive windowboxes for her own home but found the market lacking. After taking matters into her own hands, neighbors soon came calling and things grew from there.

“We started humbly in that garage with a rusty Dodge Durango, hauling supplies—a symbol of our resourcefulness and dedication to making things work with what we had,” Schneider shares. “That same spirit of creativity and determination continues to drive us.”

Today, WOW Windowboxes operates out of a warehouse and office space in Saint Bernard, with 30 talented team members and a fleet of 12 wrapped box trucks to serve Greater Cincinnati.

“Our focus has always been on improving our services and exceeding client expectations at every turn,” Schneider says. “Our full-service approach, including automatic irrigation systems and seasonal maintenance, eliminates hassle.”

Many of the company’s clients are some of the top realtors in the city. Others include members of the Cincinnati Bengals, HOMEARAMA participants and especially individual families looking to brighten up their block.

“While we’re known for our stunning windowboxes, we also design and plant planters and other containers to suit any space,” Schneider explains. “Our services include design, installation and maintenance. We provide irrigation systems to simplify watering and custom planting designs to match our clients’ styles and preferences.”

Regardless of the season or setting, WOW Windowboxes ensures that every container is breathtaking.

“We’ve had so many amazing opportunities to showcase our work, all of which align perfectly with WOW’s mission to create beauty and bring joy to the spaces we touch,” Schneider explains. “We’re thrilled to contribute to making spaces throughout Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky even more memorable and beautiful.”

The creative designers at WOW Windowboxes have a solution ready to impress, even in challenging settings.

“Sometimes it’s not about windowboxes—it might be planters around a pool, windowboxes on deck railings or planters for decks and rooftops,” he says.

While windowboxes add an attractive flair to any setting, some may believe them to be high-maintenance or expensive. That’s just not the case. Consider budget-friendly and scalable solutions like single pots and two-foot windowboxes that can accommodate nearly any space.

“We’re extremely creative in helping clients bring color and fun into their outdoor spaces, proving that outdoor beauty can be both accessible and versatile,” says Schneider. Add flower power to the outdoor spaces of your home or business this spring with WOW Windowboxes.

Where to Enjoy Al Fresco Dining

This Spring in Cincinnati

Our Favorite Neighborhood Spots for Patio Dining

After months of ice, snow, rain, and even a few polar vortices, Cincinnati gets that first day of warm air. Windows are opened to usher in a gentle breeze, and you can catch a whiff of spring blooms in the air. That’s when favorite neighborhood restaurants pop open umbrellas and welcome guests to dine al fresco.

Hyde Park, Oakley, and Pleasant Ridge have great outdoor dining within a short stroll. Here are a few to try:

Hyde Park | Dutch’s Larder

This spot in East Hyde Park is an easy walk for many in the neighborhood. Once there, the cozy bar leads to a secluded patio that is under cover in the colder months. The menu includes truffle popcorn, charcuterie boards, burgers, smoked BBQ, salads, and more. Formerly a beer dock, Dutch's is also known for a rotating tap of beers along with house-made cocktails and wine. There’s also a kids’ menu and a selection of board games to amuse the little ones.

Oakley | The Establishment

Sitting right across from the Wasson Way Trail, “The E” has been a neighborhood bar for 35 years. New owners refreshed the property in 2019, adding a new scratch kitchen and a large outdoor seating area. It’s a great spot to unwind with a drink, catch a game on one of the large outdoor TVs. Food choices include wings, salads, burgers, or sandwiches. Weekend brunch is also available, with a variety of breakfast food and drink offerings.

Pleasant Ridge | Café Alma

Visit this relatively new cafe and check out the menu of tasty Mediterranean dishes, coffee, tea, and a full cocktail menu. The roomy café has an outdoor seating area facing the Pleasant Ridge business district. Shakshuka, a Middle Eastern dish, features poached eggs drenched in a savory tomato sauce. If you have a sweet tooth, challah French toast and pistachio waffles offer a fresh take on breakfast favorites.
