Good Men
The world says good men are hard to come by. Personally, I refuse to buy into that— our community continues to prove it wrong every single day.
Grandfathers, fathers, brothers, nephews, uncles, sons: there are many men around us who choose to show up, day in and day out and be an example. I've had the privilege of being surrounded by great men my entire life, and I'll forever be grateful for the ones who stepped up during the hard moments.
My dad was quiet and unassuming—a man who worked behind the scenes on projects across Greater Cincinnati and throughout Ohio. He taught me what it meant to work diligently and create passionately; to acknowledge problems, but always think in solutions. The role of a father is immeasurable. They shape homes, nurture growth and lay the foundation where children can thrive. The level of impact a dad chooses to have is entirely in his hands—which can be simultaneously exciting and terrifying.
My brother is a retired Army Captain and Ranger, a commercial pilot and a brave-hearted adventurer. His authenticity and wry humor make him both a capable leader and a terribly formidable opponent in summer pool wars. Sure, a brother may push you to your limits, but it's all in love. Mostly.
Brothers aren't only born of blood. I've worked and played in male-dominated fields my entire life, and my coaches and teammates have always been some of the finest examples of men I know—great leaders, patient teachers and genuinely good humans. We've trained together, laughed together and cried together more times than I can count.
The business owners and entrepreneurs I meet in Cincinnati care deeply about their work and community, proving once again that good men are all around us.
This month, let's celebrate them. If you have a great man or father figure in your life, tell him how much he matters. A brother or a friend who's as close as one? Make sure he knows how different your life would be without him. And if you're a dad—thank you. You are an invaluable part of your family, your community and this world.

It all started with a trendy hat. When the Cincy Hat started showing up on the heads of teammates and friends of Bengals Center Ted Karras, everybody wanted to know where they could get one. Two years and two million dollars later, the

Cincy Hat is a uniform for kindness and fuel for community change. With funds from hat sales, The Cincy Hat Foundation is leading a grassroots movement to provide education and housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) right here in Cincinnati.
INDY ROOTS, CINCY CENTERED
Karras and Matt Renie, friends since they met in eighth grade, started The Cincy Hat Project when Ted spontaneously announced from the Bengals locker room that his hats were a fundraiser. During an interview with a local news station, Ted seized an opportunity to garner support for the Village of Merici, an Indianapolis nonprofit that provides housing for adults with IDD, that had been founded by Colleen Renie, Matt’s mom.
“The hats were an overnight sensation!” says Colleen. “It was way beyond my expectations.”
For both Ted and Matt, the cause runs deep. Matt’s older brother has IDD.
“Ted was always around our family and saw the issues we have with housing and support,” says Colleen. “When we built the Village in 2014, he befriended all the residents. It’s personal for him.”
“I have two cousins with nonverbal autism,” Ted shares. “I’ve known the villagers at Merici for more than a decade—I’ve worked with them and learned from them. Colleen is a visionary, and I want to continue her legacy in changing how these adults are housed,” he says.
As the Cincy Hat Project grew, so did Ted and Matt’s vision for making a community impact. The two friends launched The Cincy Hat Foundation in October 2024.
“We started the Foundation knowing we needed to do something great for Cincinnati,” says Matt Renie,

The Cincy Hat Foundation proudly funds the two full scholarships through the University of Cincinnati’s Transition & Access Pathways (TAP) Program, empowering IDD students to engage fully in campus life while building academic, social, career and independent living skills. Two limited-edition hats in Bearcat colorways support and honor the students.
FILLING THE CINCINNATI HOUSING GAP
The Cincy Hat Foundation seeks to support the growing IDD housing need in the Greater Cincinnati Area.
“One of the biggest statistics that stands out is the need,” shares Emily Kendall, co-founder and president of EmpowerMe Living, a developer, owner and manager of housing for adults with IDD. “There are over 12,000 adults with IDD that currently live with caregivers over 60+. Loss of caregiver is the main reason people end up in an undesirable housing placement, or worse, on the street,” she adds.
With such limited housing opportunities, Cincinnati’s IDD community is at great risk.
“There’s a big gap for folks who just need a safe, independent environment—a place to live and thrive in their community,” Matt explains.
“Colleen and the Village of Merici just completed their second building, and they’ve done such a great job,” Ted says. “But so many people here in Cincinnati have supported us that it felt past time we built something, infrastructure-wise, in the city that’s been so ferociously behind this mission.”
The Cincy Hat Foundation has officially broken ground on its first independent living facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Madisonville–a milestone made possible by the incredible support of its donors, partners and every individual who has ever purchased a Cincy Hat.
This moment marks the beginning of something much bigger: the foundation’s first step in building long-term, meaningful infrastructure to support adults with IDD across Cincinnati.
BUILDING HOUSING, BUILDING COMMUNITY
The Cincy Hat movement has grown far beyond anything they imagined.
“People from all 50 states, and even other countries, have reached out,” says Ted.
“This is all an amalgamation of 34,000 generous individuals that have bought hats,” Matt agrees.
That passion fuels their work ethic, one hat at a time.
“When you buy a hat, it’s a donation,” explains Angeline Wellington, PR & Marketing for The Cincy Hat Foundation.
“We walk the walk,” Ted insists. “I’ve never taken a cent, and I never will. Every dollar goes straight to the mission. We’re a lean organization and we’ll stay that way. Our goal is simple: house as many people as possible and create a sustainable asset for this community that can snowball on itself in perpetuity.”
“Ted is all in on Cincinnati,” states Matt. “But we can’t do it without the support of the community. It’s a community effort.”
Ted’s commitment to the cause shines through his words and actions.
“This isn’t about fame,” says Ted. “It’s about service and love.”
What started as a friend giving hats to friends has grown into neighbors building homes for neighbors.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to help in any way I can,” Ted says.

Benny Rodriguez started at the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance as a volunteer, handing out water with his son. More than a decade later, he sits on the Board, helping shape the 48th annual event at Ault Park—now a nationally recognized showcase of automotive design and a fundraiser supporting juvenile arthritis.
Q: WHAT FIRST DREW YOU INTO THE WORLD OF CLASSIC CARS?
A: In 2012, I had the chance to test drive a McLaren MP4-12. Another test driver arrived in one of a handful of McLaren F1s. Having the chance to appreciate them so closely left a lasting impression on what a benchmark for a classic car could look like.

Q: WHAT MAKES THIS CONCOURS DIFFERENT FROM A TYPICAL CAR SHOW?
A: Many enthusiasts consider Cincinnati one of the top Concours events in the country, thanks to the setting at Ault Park, the friendliness of volunteers and a carefully curated selection of museum-quality vehicles from around the world.
Q: WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES THAT MOST ATTENDEES WOULD NEVER REALIZE?
A: It takes a village of dedicated volunteers (more than 400 annually) to deliver a world-class event. Planning happens year-round—from selecting cars to engaging sponsors and building awareness for the weekend’s activities.
Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CAR OR CLASS FROM THE EVENT THAT YOU FIND YOURSELF RETURNING TO EVERY YEAR?
A: While we have 13 standard classes for which collectors nominate cars every year, I enjoy the diversity of featured marquees and special displays that we select as annual themes. This year, we will celebrate 100 years of Mercedes Benz, spotlighting notable cars from the early turbo era while paying tribute to vehicles featured in films such as “Fast and Furious” and Pixar’s “Cars” franchise.
Q: HAVE YOU HAD A MOMENT AT THE CONCOURS THAT STUCK WITH YOU?
A: A mother asked me to help her locate a BMW McLaren F1 racing car that her 7-year-old was begging to see. I personally walked them to the car because I couldn’t wait to see her son’s expression when encountering the epic car—his smile was priceless.
Q: THE CONCOURS IS ALSO A FUNDRAISER— WHAT CAUSES OR ORGANIZATIONS DOES IT SUPPORT?
A: With the help from the Concours d’Elegance Foundation, the Arthritis Foundation provides programs such as the JA Camps and JA Family Summit, which support our local community. It’s important for me to spread awareness to give hope for finding a cure as I know several families dealing with it.
Q: HOW HAS THE CAR CULTURE IN CINCINNATI EVOLVED SINCE YOU FIRST GOT INVOLVED?
A: Cincinnati has developed a strong car culture that brings together world-class collectors and firsttime enthusiasts alike. On any given weekend in the Cincinnati–Dayton area, events like Cars and Coffee draw hundreds of people who share a passion not just for the vehicles but for their stories and the community around them.

For many homeowners, roof maintenance and repair can be something that doesn’t always stay top-of-mind—until, that is, when it’s time to address a major issue. Fortunately, that’s where Riley Roof & Exteriors comes in. With a holistic approach to the beams and boards protecting us from the elements, they’ve been providing home and business owners throughout Greater Cincinnati structural solutions for more than four years now.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that a roof is just shingles,” explains Justin Riley, owner of Riley Roof & Exteriors. “In reality, it is a full system. Things like ventilation, flashing and underlayment all play a major role in how the roof performs and how long it lasts. If those components are not done properly, even the best shingles will not hold up the way they should.”
Justin proudly points out that he’s a third generation member of the building products industry, adding that it’s a part of how he grew up.
“My grandfather, Bill, was the general manager at Roofing Distributing in Oakley for many years,” Justin says. “My dad and his two brothers all started there early on, and went on to long careers in the industry, mostly on the manufacturing side. My dad focused on vinyl siding, and my uncles both worked for a shingle manufacturer for a long time.”
“I also married into a home building family,” Justin adds. “My father-in-law is a builder and has been a big influence and support as I started my own business.”
Today, Justin’s dad works with him as a sales consultant for windows and siding. Which is to say, he and his team know a thing or two about roofing. One popular misconception, he says, is the way pricing is presented.
“You see a lot of ‘buy one get one’ or large discount promotions,” he shares. “In many cases, those numbers are already built into the pricing.”

The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
