For almost 40 years, Phantom Sound has been at the forefront of cutting-edge audio design and technical ingenuity in Greater Cincinnati. Over that time, technology and expectations of home entertainment have changed considerably; today, the company operates from a polished 3,000-square-foot state-of-the-art showroom on Montgomery Road in Loveland. “We’re pretty unique in that no one else does what we do,” says owner Tommy Brand, who began leading the company in 2022. Since then, he’s directed the company to embrace “smart” home solutions beyond the audio know-how it was established with. Brand, who lives in Loveland with his wife Lora and their four daughters, explains that shifts in remote work have impacted services, as well.
“Now that working from home and Wi-Fi has become so prevalent,” he says, “we’ve started offering networking solutions. That’s in addition to technology-based motorized window treatments, lighting controls, and even ‘smart’ lights themselves.”
Together, he explains, all that technology can be integrated into a single system, easily controlled from a handy touchscreen or a simple phone app.
Brand’s background is in accounting and finance. After about two decades of crunching numbers for leading companies in the area, he was ready for a new challenge, briefly working in the insurance industry before his entrepreneurial curiosity then led him to Phantom Sound.
“I had gotten to know the previous owner,” he says, “and we worked out a deal.”
The legacy of Phantom Sound is not one that he takes lightly.
Howard McGurdy founded the company in 1988. “He was a music guy in the music industry, and knew some of the famous people like James Brown and Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, those sorts of people,” Brand explains.
He adds that McGurdy studied ways to provide in-home speakers and related tech installed, but out of sight. “His goal was for it to be out of sight, out of mind — but still allowing clients to hear good music.”
Over time, the company eventually morphed to cover other aspects of home theaters, including projection and TV systems, Brand explains. Home security and surveillance systems followed.
Today, Brand estimates that Phantom Sound serves roughly 500 clients annually. “It’s primarily been metro Cincinnati, but our work is in 32 different states and counting,” he says, “and four or five different countries.”
Brand also points out that – while the company still provides top-notch A/V guidance and installation –business is growing for “smart” home functionality.
“Think about homes that were built even 10-plus years ago that have the big recessed 6-inch cans that are in the ceiling, and it’s an actual bulb. Well, the lights that you can retrofit in that space, instead of having a big 6-inch opening, you can have anywhere from a 2- to 4-inch opening. You get the same amount of light, and the light is integrated into the lighting module, and you get a much quieter looking ceiling,” he offers.

Retrofits on existing window treatments are also growing in popularity. “A lot of people will have the plantation wood blinds in their window,” he says, “which was very popular for a long period of time. Stepping into Monmouth Street Mercantile is like being transported to a cozy yet refined wonderland. Owners Wendy Braun and Tatum Davis report that wide eyes on customers are often the first reaction when walking in the door. Then they hear the playlist full of good vibes and smell the delightful herbs and scented candles. Soon they’re touching items that appeal. It’s a feast for the senses.
“Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls is a good description,” Wendy says. “People are just blown away by the aesthetic.”
The Mercantile offers goods from whimsy to bespoke in a variety of price ranges. Each item is carefully selected by the owners to bring a sense of connection and sweetness to their shop—and also to the people who will be taking those items home.
“We focus on body, mind and spirit. We like things that look good and feel good,” Tatum shares.
Beautifully made and unusual purses from Fable in England, buttery-soft scarves, enchanting home decor and delicious teas are just some of the items you’ll find. And then there are more playful gifts like adult coloring books, watercolor sets and tarot cards.

Tatum Davis and Wendy Braun met when they were both schoolteachers. So, they’re used to helping and educating people. Their shop was born when they were both feeling burnt out and, having shared an office at school, discovered they had many common interests like flavorful teas, exquisitely smelling candles, unexpected books and apothecary items. They also had a similar eclectic and whimsical aesthetic - which is something they’ve found their clientele really appreciates too.

A Holiday Cocktail to Remember with Joy in Every Sip
The Frosted Candy Cane Cocktail:
Ingredients:
• 2 oz Candy Cane Infused Vodka
• 2 oz Crème de Cacao
• 1 oz CincySips Vanilla Bean Syrup
• 1/2 oz Half & Half Garnish:
• Mini or Large Candy Cane and crushed candy cane pieces
Directions:
Step 1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
Step 2. Shake until well chilled and creamy.
Step 3. Strain into a festive glass over ice and garnish with a candy cane and chopped candy cane pieces.
DIY Candy Cane Infused Vodka:
Step 1. Add 3-4 mini candy canes (or one large one) to 1 cup of vodka. Stir and let sit for 20 min.
CincySips Vanilla Bean Syrup:
Ingredients:
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup water
• 1 vanilla bean (split and scraped) or 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
Directions:
Step 1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Step 2. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
Step 3. Add the vanilla bean and simmer for 5 minutes.
Step 4. Remove from heat, cool, and strain into a bottle.Keeps for up to 2 weeks refrigerated- perfect for coffee, cocktails, or mocktails.

Creating stovetop potpourri is a delightful way to indulge in the scents of the festive season. This Cranberry Orange Potpourri combines sparkling notes of fresh citrus and cranberries with nostalgic spices and woodsy herbs to create a welcoming atmosphere.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 cup fresh cranberries
• 1 orange, sliced
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 1 teaspoon whole cloves
• 3 star anise
• 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
• 2-3 cups water (plus more as needed)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Combine cranberries, sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and rosemary in a pot. Add 2-3 cups of water, ensuring the ingredients are submerged.
