Hello – welcome to the Kids + Pets issue!
As we prepared for this month’s theme, I found myself reminiscing about our family’s journey to pet ownership. Three years ago, my daughters begged my husband and me for a puppy. Day after day, they enthusiastically showed us photos of dogs of all breeds, colors, and sizes. The thought of adding another family member felt overwhelming at first; however, their persistence and conviction eventually paid off. In the summer of 2022, we welcomed our 8-week-old Siberian husky, Liv, into our home.
It was certainly an adjustment—cleaning up accidents, comforting her during middle-of-the-night uncertainty, introducing her to extended family and friends, and socializing her with other neighborhood dogs.
Though welcoming Liv meant a shift in our lifestyle, she has brought endless love and excitement into our lives. I recently learned that pet ownership can offer numerous developmental benefits for children, including empathy, responsibility, companionship, and emotional regulation. My daughters quickly discovered the importance of caring for another living being. Walking Liv around the neighborhood also became a wonderful way for them to build social skills. Despite her playful and rambunctious nature, Liv has a remarkable ability to create a calming presence and safe space—for the girls and for all of us.
Another key aspect of pet ownership is compassionate care: balanced nutrition, grooming, and overall wellbeing. In this issue, we introduce you to Christopher Davis, owner of 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming. Christopher shares how his team transforms what could be a stressful grooming experience into one of comfort, care, and positive association. He also values giving back to the pet community through adoption events and donations to their local pet food pantry. Keep an eye out for 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming as they continue to support even more donation drives, adoption events, and fundraisers!
For all the kids at heart—big and small—we’re thrilled to spotlight Dollywood Parks & Resorts! Back in 2021, our family took a vacation to Dollywood, and to this day, my daughters still recall it as one of their all-time favorites. The resort itself is breathtaking, and the attractions lived up to every hope: magical, thrilling, and completely immersive. Whether you're dreaming up your next adventure or simply looking for a place that sparks joy for all ages, Dollywood is a destination worth discovering.

LOCAL “GEAR & GROOMING” SERVICE PROVIDES AND OFFERS GUIDANCE ON IMPORTANCE OF PROPER COMPANION CARE
ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE
“Pets are an integral part of the family,” says Christopher Davis, owner of 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming in Covington, Kentucky. “Pet parents treat their four-legged family members with compassion, love, and attention. They focus on quality, balanced nutrition and care—not just a one-size-fitsall mentality.”
At 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming, compassionate care is a top priority.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BONNIE PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY
Most importantly, he says, is that it can reduce stress and anxiety. “It transforms a potentially stressful and even dangerous experience into a positive, comfortable, and healthy one for the pet, while also providing peace of mind and building trust for the owner,” he says.
“Grooming often involves tasks that can be uncomfortable if not done correctly, such as nail trims, ear cleaning, and de-matting,” Christopher says. “Compassionate groomers perform these tasks gently and efficiently, minimizing pain and discomfort.”
He also points out the importance of handlers having experience with deaf, blind, anxious, or mobility-challenged pets, as
well as specialized conditioning for allergies or skin conditions.
For many pets, Christopher notes, especially those new to grooming or with past negative experiences, the process can be incredibly frightening. His team understands that.
“The sounds of clippers and dryers, unfamiliar smells, being handled by strangers, and being restrained can all induce significant fear, anxiety, and stress,” Christopher explains, adding that’s why compassionate groomers use gentle handling, soothing voices, positive reinforcement (like treats and praise), and calm environments to minimize stress. “This helps pets form
"PET PARENTS LOOK FOR US TO BE EXPERTS IN PROVIDING QUALITY SERVICES."
positive associations with grooming, making future sessions less traumatic and more manageable,” he offers.
“Think about grooming just like your own hair, skin, and overall care,” he says. “While being groomed, your pet receives a bath, manicure and pedicure, a cut/style depending on the breed, and brushing. These services are performed by a trained, skilled professional,” he says. As part of that process, those groomers also look for health and skin issues to prevent what sometimes could be expensive veterinarian visits in the future.
Compassion extends beyond the practice’s walls. 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming frequently collaborates with and supports other regional organizations that share their mindset.
For example, it assists Kenton County Animal Services, Caped Canines, Bluegrass Pug Rescue, and Animal Services in efforts to find “forever homes” through adoption events and by donating food when needed at their pet food pantry.
“Being an active member of the pet-focused groups allows us to give back to the pet community at large,” Christopher says.
This year, 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming plans to expand its outreach through donation drives, additional adoption events, and fundraising efforts.
"We're active with the Covington Business Council, various veterinarian offices, Atlas Canine College, and pet sitter and walker services in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati," Christopher explains, adding that 4 Hounds Gear & Grooming also partners with groups in Covington and Northern Kentucky that promote growth and community engagement, such as Fairhaven Mission and other various neighborhood associations.
It’s a multitiered approach to proper care—addressing both individual pets and the broader community.
“Commitment to compassionate care goes beyond just being nice,” Christopher says, adding that it also encompasses fear-free/low-stress techniques, gentle handling, attention to detail, and a personalized approach.
“Every pet deserves to be groomed and be cared for in a respectful way that addresses their fears, anxiety, and stress, if present,” Christopher adds. “When you get to know the pet and the human as their groomer, you develop that bond and trust. It allows us to provide quality services to all dogs regardless of their condition, age, or disposition.”

Celebrating 40 Years of Thrills, Music + Mountain Magic at Dolly Parton’s Theme Park
Nestled in the foothills of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Dollywood is more than just a theme park—it’s a celebration of Southern charm, mountain heritage and the enduring spirit of Dolly Parton. This year, the park marks a major milestone: Dollywood has reached its 40th anniversary, honoring four decades of family fun, music, and Smoky Mountain magic. From the scent of fresh-baked cinnamon bread wafting through the air to the rush of wind on each of its ten roller coasters, every corner of the park offers a blend of thrills and genuine hospitality.
Dollywood is strikingly beautiful, with rides and attractions thoughtfully integrated into the natural landscape, blending with the environment in a truly breathtaking way. The setting offers unique features, such as a 30,000-square-foot outdoor aviary, home to 26 bald eagles. The Wings of America is an educational and engaging live bird of prey show featuring eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and vultures. Dollywood is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts.
Dolly Parton’s influence can be felt throughout the park, but especially in the area called “The Dolly Parton Experience.” Here visitors can watch shows celebrating the music of Dolly, hear a performance from some of her relatives, walk through her tour bus and see examples of her most iconic outfits, including dozens of pairs of Dolly’s iconic sky-high heels. This section is much more than a museum, it is an immersive Dolly Parton experience.
“Dollywood is more than just a theme park — it’s a celebration of Southern charm, mountain heritage and the enduring spirit of Dolly Parton.”
Thrill seekers will not be disappointed. With more than 50 rides throughout the park, there is plenty of adventure to be had, including two fan favorites: Wild Eagle and Thunderhead. Wild Eagle was the country’s first wing coaster and features a 135-foot drop on the first hill as it reaches a thrilling speed of 61 mph. Thunderhead is a high-speed wooden coaster considered to be one of the top in the country, twice earning the Golden Ticket Award for Top Wooden Rollercoaster. It weaves through a majestic mountain landscape and even makes a flyby through the loading station.
Dollywood is a place for the whole family to enjoy. The Country Fair and Wildwood Grove sections of the park have a dozen family-friendly rides that are perfect for kids. The entire family can hop on board a steam locomotive on a scenic thirty-minute tour of the property. Big Bear Mountain is a long, smooth coaster with three quick launches that is suitable for younger family members (39 inches and taller), but still fun enough for older adventure-seekers. It even passes under a waterfall! Throughout the property, visitors can step back in time as they pan for gold, dip a candle, visit the blacksmith or watch glass blowers craft works of art. And if you’re craving authentic Southern food, you’ll find it around every corner. Download the park’s app to pre-order and skip the lines.
Dollywood is open from mid-March through early January and offers a rotating series of festivals and musical acts throughout the year. Whether you're chasing adrenaline or a slice of Appalachian culture, Dollywood delivers a travel experience as heartfelt as the songs that inspired it. Dollywood.com

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.
Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.
Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.
The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.
It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.
Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 cup oatmeal
• 4 tablespoons honey
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 4 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.
3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.
Enjoy!
