Letter from the Editor WE, AS A COMMUNITY, HAVE BEEN THROUGH A LOT TOGETHER THESE PAST FEW WEEKS. Things have changed rapidly, and like so many of you, what once seemed so important doesn’t feel quite as pressing anymore. My calendar that was once filled with baseball and soccer games, track meets, school and work functions, weddings, and graduations is now suddenly wiped clean with not knowing when life will get back to “normal.” Initially, I mourned the loss of the abrupt end to so many things. Among one of the most disappointing for me personally was the cancellation of my son’s freshman year of high school baseball. Playing for his high school team has been a long-term goal that he has diligently worked toward daily since he was 8-years-old. I know it may seem like a trivial thing, and in the grand scheme of things it truly is, but as a mom it was hard to see the season snatched away from him right after working so hard to make the team. There are so many other things lost that are much greater than that—too numerous to list out, and we all have our own losses and have been impacted by this global situation differently. However, in the midst of the uncertainty of what tomorrow brings, there is beauty in this time that we are given to stop everything and meditate on what truly matters. This is a time to press into our faith, spend meaningful moments with loved ones (thankfully technology allows us to

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

ARTICLE EMILY SHEA

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, TRAVELING MEANS A PRETTY DRASTIC CHANGE IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY ROUTINE. It affects everything from your diet and exercise regiment to what time you go to bed and wake up. Although the trade off of traveling to a new and exciting city or your favorite beach destination is typically worth the change in routine, traveling doesn’t mean all of your healthy daily habits must be abandoned. I get it – vacation for most of us is all about relaxation. Relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii with an ice cold piña colada in my hand is much more enticing than hitting the gym for a workout. And let’s face it – healthy options like gym accessibility and nutrient-rich menu items aren’t always available. But traveling doesn’t necessarily have to be unhealthy. It also doesn’t have to be as intense as making a commitment to hitting the gym for three hours everyday and eating steamed broccoli for dinner each night. If you make a  conscious effort, you can always find ways to stay active and eat nutritiously on vacation. However, it certainly helps to stay somewhere that promotes  your wellbeing by offering active programs, a fitness facility, healthy dining options  and spa services. And while it is difficult to find a place that offers all of those things, it is not impossible. In fact, Hotel Galomar, located on the small Portuguese island of Madeira (yes, as in Madeira wine), has all that and more. Located along the beautiful southeast coast of Madeira and within the Galo Resort, Hotel Galomar is an adults only hotel that has a unique cliff-edge location, a sea water outdoor pool, a lounge and bar, a spa and an on-site restaurant. It is also walking distance to the  resort’s two additional  restaurants and the  large gym with free weights, vast CONTINUED >

cardio equipment options, benches and barbells, weight machines and 70 weekly exercise classes – all available for no additional cost. Hotel Galomar also offers active outdoor excursions such as mountain biking, hiking and canyoning through the outdoor company LokoLoko Madeira.  The resort’s state-of-the-art gym  is home to more than just your everyday treadmill  and generic set of dumbbells. There are over a dozen indoor cycling bikes, ellipticals and treadmills, as well as a weights area with a large  selection of dumbbells, kettlebells and weight machines,  a CrossFit room, a yoga and meditation room, squash courts, a heated indoor pool and a sauna. Hotel Galomar’s on-site restaurant, Restaurante Atlantis, offers a daily breakfast buffet with options ranging from tropical fruits, a selection of fresh bread and pastries, smoked salmon, egg dishes and more. In the evening, Restaurante Atlantis transforms into an upscale grill that specializes in nutritious seafood and fish dishes. One  of the other  dining options located within the resort is Restaurante Ondamar. Similar to Restaurante Atlantis, it also offers a daily breakfast buffet. Each evening Restaurante Ondamar also offers a house buffet. With daily themes and a vast selection of gluten free, vegetarian and organic food options, the house buffet provides numerous nutritious options and can whet just about anyone’s appetite. If exploring the unique culture of Madeira strikes your interest, Hotel Galomar is steps away from a local bus stop. For less than $5, you can purchase a round trip ticket to Madeira’s capital city of Funchal. Another option is to have the hotel’s front desk staff call you a local taxi, which will cost you a bit more. Renting a car in Madeira is also an option, but the roads are extremely steep and windy, making driving quite a challenge if you’re not a local.  Funchal is a  cosmopolitan  city well known for its natural beauty, cable cars and upscale restaurants. The city overlooks the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is backdropped by the island’s luscious green mountains. The best views of the city can be experienced from the Madeira Cable Car, also known as the Teleférico do Funchal. It starts in Funchal’s Old Town and travels over 10,000 feet to Monte, one of the most historical areas of Funchal.  Funchal is also home to the Funchal Ecological Park. The park offers multiple hiking trails, trails for mountain biking and all-terrain biking, bird watching experiences, canyoning and more.  For more information about the island of Madeira and its capital city of Funchal, visit VisitMadeira.pt. southern california girls’ getaway ARTICLE ANGELA SOUTHARD WINTHER @GETOUTOFTOWNGIRL

DREAMING ABOUT YOUR NEXT GIRLS’ GETAWAY? I’ve found the ideal place for you and your friends: Laguna Beach, California, a charming community nestled between San Diego and Los Angeles along the southern coast of Orange County. The weather is close to perfect year-round, and there are 7 miles of beautiful coastline. There are many luxurious oceanfront hotels with pampering spas, incredible restaurants, charming art galleries, local retail stores and world-class shopping centers a short drive away.   If you’re an art lover, the area will especially appeal to you. There are more than 100 galleries for exploring, and 80 pieces of public art are on display. Laguna Beach has been an artists’ colony for more than a century, and summer is a wonderful time to visit when the town’s renowned festivals take place. During Festival of Arts, Sawdust Art Festival and Pageant of the Masters, visitors and locals participate in demonstrations and classes; enjoy recreations of famous works of art; and have the opportunity to purchase unique, locally made goods. A great place to start getting acquainted with the area is Main Beach, the centerpiece of town and located along the famous Pacific Coast Highway. It’s a treasure trove for soaking in the beaming California sunshine, walking on the beach and enjoying people watching. 16

WHERE TO STAY THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAGUNA NIGUEL 1 RITZ CARLTON DRIVE, DANA POINT, CALIFORNIA 949.240.2000 RitzCarlton.com

Less than 10 miles away from downtown Laguna is one of my favorite shopping areas, Fashion Island. It’s a pristine, open-air center with world-class shopping, exclusive boutiques and a wide range of cafés and restaurants. Fashion Island is home to the area’s only Neiman Marcus, as well as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. If you’re looking for delicious California cuisine, Laguna Beach has its fair share. From quaint cafés to upscale beachfront dining, there is an abundance of outstanding restaurants in Laguna Beach, and most are independently owned. On my last visit, we discovered a new favorite, Nick’s. It’s centrally located in one of the liveliest blocks  and offers indoor and outdoor dining, impeccable service, mouthwatering food and handcrafted cocktails. Menu offerings include specialty salads, pan-seared salmon and fried chicken that’s so good you’ll think you’re back in the South. Nick’s is open daily for lunch and dinner and serves breakfast on the weekends. The perfect place to start or end any evening with your friends is at Las Brisas. The views are breathtaking here, and the specialty margaritas are some of the best you’ll ever enjoy. The bustling California landmark also serves lunch, dinner and brunch.

There are many options of where to stay when visiting, but my recommendation is Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, just a few miles from Laguna Beach. The four-story oceanfront property has all of the bells and whistles of the luxury hotel chain, but the view puts this property in a class by itself. The grand hotel has a beautiful, recently renovated lobby, 367 rooms, 29 suites, a WHERE TO EAT NICK’S LAGUNA BEACH 440 S. COAST HIGHWAY LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA 949.376.8595 NicksRestaurants.com

pampering spa and two outdoor pools. The hotel is also home to five restaurants, including a poolside café; an outdoor lounge that overlooks the Pacific and specializes in small plates and unique cocktails; an upscale steakhouse; and a market that is open for breakfast, lunch and to-go items. The spa at the Ritz-Carlton is the perfect spot to enjoy the day with your favorite friends. Treatments such as the Pacific Wave and Coastal Illuminating Facial are ocean-inspired and incorporate elements of the sea. It’s easy to get to this idyllic seaside community, as there are several nearby airports. John Wayne Airport Orange County (SNA) is the closest, but other options include Long Beach Airport (LGB), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Diego International Airport (SAN).   For more information about Laguna Beach, California, visit VisitLagunaBeach.com.

CONN EC REBECCA ALEXANDER SHARES HER STORY OF GOING DEAF AND BLIND

T I O N S 20

Johnson County Lifestyle | April 2020

OUR EYES AND EARS ARE VITAL TO GUIDING US THROUGH LIFE TO SEE AND HEAR THE WORLD AROUND US, BUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR THE UPCOMING BOOKS & BOUTIQUES FUNDRAISER FOR THE SAINT LUKE’S FOUNDATION IS LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH LIFE WITHOUT THE HELP OF EITHER SENSE. In the process, she is assuring others they are not alone in their struggles. Rebecca Alexander was born with Usher Syndrome Type III, a rare genetic disorder that is causing her to go both blind and deaf. Additionally, she was in a serious accident at the age of 18, broke most of the bones in her body and still experiences chronic pain from the experience. Rebecca first went to the eye doctor at the age of 12 when she struggled to see the blackboard at school. While doctors told her then that she would be completely blind by early adulthood, 10 to 15 degrees of her central vision remains today. One day she will lose even that extremely limited vision. She first began noticing significant ringing in her ears at the age of 19, and her hearing began diminishing from there. While she is now naturally deaf, she hears with the assistance of cochlear implants. Through it all, she lives a full and active life as an author, psychotherapist, group fitness instructor and extreme athlete who has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and has swum from Alcatraz to shore in the San Francisco Bay. She also devotes much time as an advocate for those with disabilities and works to raise awareness and funding to support research for Usher Syndrome, the leading genetic cause of deaf-blindness.  Whatever challenge or diagnosis a person faces, Rebecca wants them to know they are not alone. She says a tremendous sense of isolation and loneliness often comes with a diagnosis or disability, and she encourages others to find a sense of community to develop more human connections.  While she lives a full life and has come to terms with her disability, she gives herself the opportunity to process what she is experiencing.  “I allow myself to experience the loss, and I allow myself to cry,” Rebecca says. “I allow myself to express the emotions that come with a condition that causes you to go deaf and blind.” As she has learned to accept assistance from others, she also encourages others to develop comfort with the discomfort of asking for help. “Everyone needs help – able-bodied or disabled,” Rebecca says. “When you ask someone for help, you are not asking them to do something for you. You are asking them to help you be successful in whatever you are working towards.” Rebecca loves connecting with others through her story and says part of her ability to own her experiences and her disability is to tell others about it. She wants people to take something from her story and be encouraged to do something differently in their lives. “It’s an absolute privilege to be able to have what we have,” Rebecca says. “When we don’t use it, the disservice is not to anyone but ourselves.” For more insights from Rebecca, plan to attend Books & Boutiques at the Overland Park Convention Center. All guests will receive a signed copy of her book, Not Fade Away: A Memoir of Senses Lost and Found, which is also currently being made into a movie.  Every year Books & Boutiques supports women’s health initiatives at Saint Luke’s South Hospital, and this year’s funds will be used for enhancements at the maternity unit.  For more information and to register for the event, go to saintlukeskc.org/ saint-lukes-foundation/books-boutiques. change with every step STEPS OF FAITH FOUNDATION HELPS AMPUTEES Matt Hawkins Photo by Jason Domingues

FIVE HUNDRED AMPUTATIONS ARE PERFORMED EVERY DAY IN AMERICA. That statistic, from the Amputee Coalition, speaks to why Billy Brimblecom is passionate about Steps of Faith Foundation. Brimblecom, executive director and an amputee himself, notes that prosthetic limbs provide more than convenience for an amputee.

ARTICLE RILEY COWING 22

Johnson County Lifestyle | April 2020

“It’s a matter of being handicapped or not,” he says. “It’s a matter of walking or using all four of your limbs and being able to go back to work and supporting your family or not. I’ve never expected to hear somebody say this, but we’ve had many patients say that we saved their life. They were so depressed and so down and so Billy Brimblecom, Isabel Bessler with prosthetist and Steps Of Faith board member Loren Decker and Jason Sudeikis. A Day To Adore Photography

unable to take care of themselves and make a living and support their families that they had contemplated suicide. So why is it important? Because it’s not like, ‘I couldn’t walk, and I got this new leg and that’s convenient.’ No. It affects the person 360—mind, body, spirit, the whole thing. Not only that but their family, their friends, their coworkers.” For Grace Manning, who was connected to the organization when her leg needed to be replaced, Steps of Faith relieved the worry and anxiety of the unknown. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to replace the leg,” she says. “Most people don’t have tens of thousands of dollars lying around. I do everything with my leg, from walking across the room to going down a flight of stairs. I can’t even leave the house without it or live my daily life without the ability to walk. I’m so incredibly grateful for Steps of Faith for taking away the

Mr. Hoerler with Prosthteist, Hwa Cho at Hanger Clinic in Atlanta

burden and for helping me when I truly needed it. I’m overwhelmed by their generosity.” Another amputee, Jp Phillips, echoes her thanks.

Jp Phillips

“Steps of Faith has been a lifesaver for me,” he says. “If it wasn’t for them, I have no idea where I would be.” Brimblecom was first connected to the organization in 2013 by Robert Pittman, who owned the prosthetic company where Brimblecom was a patient. Pittman asked if he’d be willing to speak with one of his patients who had lost his leg to cancer. At the time he was working steadily as a musician but after that conversation, he told his wife he wished that could be his job. “Being a bridge to hope and comfort for amputees in need—I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do,” he recalls. “That moved me more than the idea of making music which has kind of historically moved me more than anything in my life. It just seemed like it was this opportunity that was kind of made for me. And ultimately it was.”   Over the last seven years he has seen the organization grow, noting that they receive requests each month for help in new cities across the country. In 2019, their goal was to help 100 people, and they ended the year helping 133. Connecting the amputee with a prosthetist who can help is an aspect of the job that Brimblecom loves.  CONTINUED >

CHANGE WITH EVERY STEP (CONTINUED) Photography Jason Domingues

Grace Manning

“When I get to talk to a prosthetist in a new city, they say, ‘Wow. Yes, I’m in,’ because what we’re doing is providing a solution to a problem they have as well,” he says. “What do they do with these great people who need their help—the kind of people they got in that business to help—and they can’t help them because they have no way to pay for it? We’re an option.” April is Limb Loss Awareness month, and while Brimblecom doesn’t want people to live in fear of its occurrence, he acknowledges losing a limb can happen to anyone, any time. “It could happen to any of us,” he says. “One of my best buds works with me, and has for a few years now, and his mother lost a leg this past year because of a crazy infection. I mean, what are the odds that me and now his mom are both amputees? It’s not for people to live in fear of being in an auto accident or having vascular disease or getting cancer by any means, but it’s not something that anyone ever plans or signs up for.”  And for those who are uncertain of how to help—Steps of Faith is a place to start.  “This is a small but very legitimate charity,” he says. “People can see their dollars in action with every step taken by somebody that we help.”  For more information and to learn about ways to partner with Steps of Faith Foundation, visit stepsoffaithfoundation.org. 24

A Ranch Within Reach AUTHENTICITY, HOSPITALITY, AND NATURE: A NEW FAMILY TRADITION

GROWING UP IN TEXAS, I’M RELATIVELY FAMILIAR WITH THE ALLURE OF DUDE RANCHES. I fondly remember riding my first horse as a young girl, experiencing the quintessential Texan atmosphere, and purchasing my only-to-be-worn-once cowboy hat.  It was all for the experience, of course, and added a particular flavor of “fitting in” that I coveted as a British-born trying-so-hard-to-be-Texan cowgirl.  Put simply, Dude Ranches are vacation destinations that provide guests with an experience of the Western lifestyle; 4UR Ranch added a depth to this seemingly simple portrayal with a dynamic experience we won’t soon forget.

relaxed after the weekend that we’d just weathered camping in Moab. I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to end the day. Refreshed and ready, we rose in the early morning to traverse the stunning terrain on horseback. My partner, Jeff, had never been riding before, but with an approachable lesson from Head Wrangler, Damon Gibbons, he was quickly on his way to being the new sheriff in town.  The journey itself was sensational, reviving childhood memories with reins in hand, wind in my hair, and sun gracing me from my Western-hat-wearing head down to my borrowed cowboy boots.  After some enlightening conversation, a few film photos, and an introduction to trotting, our trusty steeds carried us safely home to the stables.  A quick swing of the leg gracefully landed my feet to the ground, and I was back to the normal vantage point of my 5’3” stature. Looking up to my horse Rein’s gorgeous caramel-tinted mane, I thanked her for gifting me an intimate new perspective of the surrounding lands.    The story of this ranch would not be complete without understanding its relationship to the local community of Creede. If at any point you’re looking to expand your horizons, unique happenings abound—the renowned Creede Repertory Theatre, the innovative small houses of Creede America, and the vibrant Stephen Quiller Gallery to name a few— in this charming old miners town.  Despite its size, this tiny town sure does pack a loving punch and compliments 4UR Ranch’s experience in a big way. Across the board, 4UR Ranch shines as a glowing example of what is possible through dedication to authenticity and providing only the best. Arriving as curious strangers, Jeff and I left in touch with a palpable sense of feeling like family. If you’ve been looking to introduce a new family tradition, this is certainly the place.

Stock Options Often Overlooked in Divorce Settlements In any divorce, all marital property and debt have to be divided. In an equitable division state, marital property and debt are to be divided in a just manner when considering all the statutory factors. Stock options are often overlooked by many parties when dividing marital property and debt. Some parties might forget to include them on their financial statements inoccently. In other cases, a party might, unfortunately, fail to disclose them in hopes that the other party does not discover it. In a divorce, it is vital that both parties act in an above-board manner. One way to do this is to inform the other party of all marital property and debt that exists. This means that parties going through a divorce should check with their employer, if they do not know, about whether they have any stock options. Often, the best place to inquire is through the human resource and/or benefits department. It also might mean the party who suspects that their spouse might

have stock options ensures that the lawyer inquires about this in the discovery process or otherwise. In an uncontested divorce where parties desire to settle the parties need to be able to trust that their spouse will voluntarily disclose if stock options exist. If stock options do exist, there are a few different ways in which these stock options can often be dealt with in a divorce. First, if possible, these stock options can be divided as the date of divorce in an equitable manner. But in some cases, dividing the stock options as of the date of the divorce is not possible. This may be because the options are not vested yet. Some employer terms may also not allow stock options to go to a non-employee. In these cases, there are really two options. One, the stock options may end up being divided later into the future once they vest. That said, the spouse who has the stock options might argue that since the option interest has not vested, they have not acquired them yet and,

thus, they should be off the table. Or, two, sometimes the stock options can be offset by other marital property. But to do this, the parties will need to have the value of the stock options properly valuated. Otherwise, a fair offset cannot be reached. Valuating stock options can be somewhat complex. However, with the help of a financial expert, a value can almost always be determined. Johnson County Lifestyle | April 2020

Deemed as a wine lover's paradise, Napa Valley, JUST 30 MILES LONG AND FIVE MILES WIDE, IS MADE UP OF THE PERFECT TOPOGRAPHY, CLIMATE  AND SOIL TO HARVEST RENOWNED CHARDONNAY AND CABERNET SAUVIGNON WINES.  With great wine  also comes fine dining, deluxe lodging, popular events and modern culture. It’s no wonder tourists flock to Napa Valley, last year welcoming a total of 3.85 million visitors. Not bad for a wine community that has barely been on the radar for 40 years!  How did the Valley’s popularity rise so quickly? Knowing a little slice of history before you go will spark intrigue and help bring your Napa experience to life. In the wine world, there is “before the Paris tasting” and “after the Paris tasting.”  At the “Judgment of Paris” in the spring of 1976, nine top wine judges gathered in Paris to blindly taste 10 white and 10

red wines. Knowing that some wines were from France and some from California, the French judges were confident that the French wines would win. To their surprise, California’s wines triumphed. And 40 years later, that tasting still matters. Prior to the judgment, French wines ruled the world, and there were about 67 wineries in Napa Valley. Postjudgment, the tasting results shot Napa Valley into the limelight, where today there are nearly 500 wineries. Indeed, the “Judgment of Paris” was the turning point for not only California’s wine country but for the wine industry as a whole.  While Napa’s notable reputation has taken root ever since “The Judgment,” life changed dramatically in the fall of 2017 as the wine country wildfires destroyed some wineries and damaged others, burning 144,000 acres in three counties and destroying more than 650 Napa County homes. The rebuilding has been a slow process;  however, the community’s message is clear.  Visitors are invited back to celebrate the strength of the region. While the wine country fires were devastating for locals, most visitors to Napa are hard-pressed to see signs of the impact. No hotels in Napa County burned down, and the majority of the Valley’s wineries resumed operations within days after the fires. The core of Napa Valley—where most of the hotels and wine tasting rooms are clustered—remained almost entirely untouched by damage. CONTINUED >

Picturesque Napa Valley is home to multiple small towns, each with its own special charm. With nearly 500 wineries, each with its own unique style, setting and history, the valley offers something for everyone, and narrowing down options is tough to do in one visit. For this reason, Bellevue Lifestyle’s visit led us to explore and focus on the town of Yountville and Downtown Napa.  Downtown Napa has seen a surge of growth and has plans to continue on the trajectory to become Napa Valley’s “beating heart” with an influx of new hotels, restaurants and tasting rooms. Just 10 miles north, located in the heart of Napa Valley, sits the town of  Yountville, considered Napa Valley’s culinary capital. Yountville is a food and wine lover’s dream, boasting the three-star, Michelin-rated restaurant, The French Laundry, and scores of other fine dining and luxury resorts and hotels. Yountville is also known for its culture scene, which includes museums, an art walk and a performing arts theater featuring international performers year-round. Napa Valley truly deserves multiple trips to experience the variety it has to offer. If it’s your first time visiting, don’t be afraid of visiting hotspots that may be a bit more touristy; remember that there’s a reason for its popularity. Here are a few notable stops to help narrow down your search. 38

WHEN IT COMES TO A GREAT VIEW OF THE OUTDOORS, KC BUILDING SUPPLY OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF WINDOW CHOICES FOR EVERY TASTE. Contemporary or slimline trends are currently popular in windows and doors, and they consistently supply windows and premium architectural products for remodelers, residential general contractors, commercial contractors and residential DIY customers. “We have done a lot of work related to keeping up with trends and through our manufacturer offerings, and we have added lines to accommodate some of the newer trends including Milgard, Marvin and Windsor, and now Arcadia, which is in the steel and aluminum product category,” Jay Waldenmeyer, sales associate, says. “This product is from the purist architectural design standpoint and very popular.” A lot of times in a new-build project, the product is defined by the contractor, homeowner or architect, so their job is to decipher a lot of components of design, as well as budget. “Many times, budgets are exceeded by taste desires,” he says. “We typically have solutions when we can get the opportunity to sell in that fashion. We give people ideas to satisfy their appearance and design needs all within their budget.”  KC Building Supply also provides products for replacement window needs, including inserts and sashes, as well as brand new windows. This way, a customer can choose from tearing out their entire window, which is a more disruptive process, or choose a less disruptive solution. They also help meet energy compliance for codes. They have a sales staff of 12, all with expertise in bidding and quoting for both exterior doors and windows. All are wellversed in their jobs and supply customers with the best value proposition for their needs. “We are a fixture in the city and people know us—we touch a lot of peoples’ new and remodel jobs citywide. Sometimes people come in and think we are wholesale only and not open to the public, but our showroom is open to the public,” he says. “We welcome the DIY crowd. So, if you want to shop locally and not go to a big box store, we have experts in the field who supply professional contractors and walk-in DIY customers as well.” KC Building Supply is located on the southwest corner of 75th and I-35 in Overland Park, Kansas. nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.
