Well, we did it. Issue #1 of Arvada Lifestyle is officially in the books! I hope you had
Jayme Emery
some fun reading it. I was feeling accomplished until someone asked me, "What are you gonna do next month?" Hmmm.... I hadn't thought about that, but I think it’s pretty awesome that I get to meet new people and be creative again. I just want this to be an awesome experience for my partners as well as my readers. I worked in advertising for the last twenty years and felt completely unhappy and unfulfilled because it just seemed like nonsense. I wanted to do something that mattered, that made a difference and made a mark. And so, Arvada Lifestyle was born. I am so happy to be able to bring you entertaining and informative stories surrounded by amazing, hard working partners that I feel honored to call friends. Please bear with me- I'm new at this- but I promise you that I will put my heart and soul into each and every issue. We are Arvada,

DEJERAE TRUJILLO [PRONOUNCED DEE-JUH-RAY] IS A REAL ESTATE AGENT, AN ARTIST, A MOTHER, AND AN INDEPENDENT AND SUCCESSFUL WOMAN. She is driven, loves meeting new people and helping them find their dream home, and especially enjoys exploring her innovative side. Dejerae has become quite skilled in photography through her own creative license, and social media platforms have allowed her to share her insights and talents with others. Instagram highlights her self-taught craft as a photographer and marketer, and continues to elevate her business. Dejerae shares her journey with us as well as several suggestions for cell phone photography; she stresses the importance of lighting, angles, and editing and is confident these tips will improve all readers’ selfie-game. “I started my career in real estate at the very young age of twenty-two. Unfortunately, I did not have the finances to market myself in the ways that I wanted to. Typically, real estate agents brand themselves by sending out mailers, investing in paid advertising such as Zillow, and buying leads. Instead, I took to Instagram to build a platform with a creative visual aesthetic. The more creative I got with my posts, the more of a following I gained. This in turn created more business. I have been using my platform @sellinginstilettos since 2015 and have since closed several deals through Instagram. Readers: The quality of your photos becomes highly important when your business depends on it. I am hopeful these tips will improve your photography

+ TIP 2
Angles! It is important to find interesting and
flattering angles. The best way to find these is to get creative and weird. Experiment! Do not be afraid to make mistakes. When posting

full body shots, lower angles typically work better, and remember not to cut off your subject’s feet. Lighting! My favorite form of light to
use is natural light. If you are shooting indoors, use light from a window; this usually works best. Shooting outdoors is a little trickier because it depends on the time of day, but the subject should face the sun, and if it is peak sunshine time, I suggest finding some shade.
+ TIP 3
Editing! If you have good light-
ing and flattering angles, editing should be a breeze. I prefer to use very lightweight editing and to not overdo it with filters. If you are posting on Instagram, it is important to have a consistent feel, so edit your photos in a similar fashion each time, and remember to keep it simple.

Chef Jordon prefers to use products that fit the seasons. The Tavern carries a variety of ingredients to create a multidimensional flavor profile and to cater to those who prefer an alternative taste. GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
Bradd Hafer confirms that one of the most rewarding aspects of working at Goodwill is seeing the mission statement in action. Each and every day, more and more human beings thrive in challenging opportunities and better themselves and their circumstances. Bradd remembers the story of one retail manager who faced a variety of hardships and barriers to employment before joining Goodwill. He affirms that her story speaks to the power of the human spirit, and more specifically the spirit of the Goodwill family and the Goodwill way. This young woman stated, “Being around people who are honest with their past makes me more honest, accountable and confident!” Thanks to her determination paired with support from Goodwill, Bradd says, she was able to purchase a home while supporting her family. Today, she continues to thrive in her Goodwill career. Goodwill of Colorado provides career and personal development resources for more than 100,000 Coloradans each year—including military veterans, seniors, youth, and individuals with developmental and economic challenges. “Through its thrift retail operations, donations, corporate partnerships and recycling processes, Goodwill has worked for more than a century in Colorado to ensure individuals have access to career and life pathways that allow them to live to their fullest potential,” says Bradd Hafer. In addition to its signature compassionate heart, Goodwill serves those seeking style; whether it is clothing, interior design, home improvement, or the latest cooking trends, Goodwill is prepared to accommodate. Let’s start with clothing. Looking for a nice baby shower gift? A one-of-a-kind Halloween costume? A sharp and clean business suit? A casual tank or tee for the park? A sexy night-out-on-the-town outfit? Work pants or skirts? Heels that impress? Goodwill has got you, and at a fraction of the retail cost. 18

Because of these incredible partnerships, impactful change has spread and continues to spread across the state. Let’s revel in these celebratory numbers from the 2019 year: + Over 141,000 Coloradans served + More than 4,700 individuals placed into community jobs + Nearly 11,000 individuals trained and supported in their job pursuits + Over 178,000,000 pounds of donations recycled/repurposed + Nearly $438 million in total economic impact from individuals employed with Goodwill’s assistance These figures are testament to the hearty vision, realistic mission, and unbelievable hard work that radiates from the Goodwill community. Furthermore, Goodwill enables others to champion cause-related issues ranging from human services to environmental protection/preservation to economic development. In June 2019, Goodwill Industries of Denver and Discover Goodwill of Southern & Western Colorado officially merged as one organization, which has provided even more opportunities to serve Coloradans throughout the state in collaboration with our dedicated and mission-driven community partners and supporters. When Coloradans donate and shop at Goodwill stores or online, they are supporting the steadfast mission and serving as Goodwill ambassadors, for ninety cents of every dollar generated from donations and sales is reinvested in programs and services for Colorado’s most vulnerable citizens. Putting those in need first, the Goodwill families of Colorado deliver on care, education, companionship, and personal growth, because they know that is the recipe to grow a strong, sustainable community. Giving back, will never go out of style. CityLifestyle.com/Arvada

IMAGINE A GETAWAY NESTLED IN THE TREES, OVERLOOKING VAST LANDSCAPES, SURROUNDED BY THE SOUNDS OF NATURE, AWAY FROM THE BUSTLE OF THE SUBURBS, AND WITH THE COMFORTS OF HOME. Leam Blackwood turned this celestial vision into a tangible construction, one you must see to believe.

Intrigued by and drawn to the beauty of mother nature, Leam Blackwood used his inventive mind and crafty hands to build tree forts as a young boy. He mastered his craft as an architect in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia where he built custom homes. It was here, high above the earth’s surface, mesmerized by the power of the ocean, standing side-by-side the tall red cedar trees, that Leam nurtured this love for elevated living. And here in Colorado, he built his flagship: The Little Red Treehouse. This fully functional guest house is equipped with a Murphy bed, bathroom, dining for two, a simple kitchen, and breathtaking views from every angle. Guests enjoy the comforts of home such as air conditioning and WiFi, and are treated to the fresh mountain air, the serenity of privacy, and the echoes of wildlife. CONTINUED >

VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.
H E A LT H Y HAIR SALMON /// EGGS /// For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

BALEFIRE GOODS CUSTOMIZE YOUR STYLE
WE BELIEVE… “Jewelry and other forms of personal expression should not be gender specific. Everyone should be able to wear jewelry that brings them joy. That is why we talk about our jewelry in non-gendered terms and choose labels like commitment jewelry over bridal jewelry. We have a responsibility to one another and the world we all share. Based on this, our custom work and most of the work crafted by the artists is created with recycled and ethically sourced materials. Education is a key component to understanding and appreciating any art form. Whether it is meeting with us to discuss certain metals for a custom design or learning about the origins of gemstones, or even taking a metalsmithing class with us to learn about the techniques and processes, education is an important part of the value we bring.” -Jamie Hollier Owner of Balefire Goods

ARTICLE LIBBY FURNS PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTT LEBARON Jamie Hollier discovered her love for metalwork as a child. She helped her grandfather, a machinist, and often visited her Great Aunt Tettie’s antique store. She frequented artisan craft fairs all over Houston with her mother, and then moved to Colorado to pursue Art History and Metalsmithing. In October of 2017, Jamie opened her studio, and forty-five days later, opened the doors to her very own artisan jewelry store in Olde Town Arvada: Balefire Goods. Jamie is honored to work alongside individuals who share the same excitement and passion for this work: “We see jewelry as wearable art, so the work we create and carry are unique, artisan made pieces. Along with this, we provide transparency into the creators/artists behind the pieces we sell to highlight the craftspeople that make the pieces.” Jamie confirms that working with others to select and create the perfect pieces that carry meaning, represent milestones, and/or celebrate significant moments is what makes this industry most satisfying; “This means you are trusted with being a part of these memorable and often life changing moments, which is so humbling.” She shares two such memorable moments: One of my favorite moments was when we made wedding bands for a couple, and they had both secretly emailed us to add engraving to the inside of their partner's ring. When they came to pick them up, they both looked at what the other wrote inside and burst into tears followed by an embrace and kiss. There wasn't a dry eye in the gallery. Another moment I will never forget was when we remade a wedding ring, from a customer who had been widowed, into a new bracelet. There was so much symbolism in taking something still loved and cherished but that was now full of complex emotions, and creating a new piece that represented a step forward in healing and creating a new life. Balefire Goods in Olde Town Arvada is built around community and equality, and it is this mission, along with the one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry, that make the business-consumer relationship unique and lasting. Owner Jamie Hollier loves working and creating in the studio and feels fortunate to be inspired by a diversity of gifted artists; building bridges and fostering community are foundational at Balefire Goods, which is why this business carries the work of artists from both the local community and across the globe. Each month, one or more artists are invited to share their work through Jamie’s store in order to further art appreciation and the creative industry in Colorado. Additionally, 5% of Balefire’s sales go to community non-profits. Jamie and her team regularly donate to and host events for local non-profits, for they believe they have to support the needs of the community to truly be a part of it. Many of the non-profits they support center around human rights, women's rights, and animal rights. These organizations provide safety and empowerment to the communities they serve, and thus Balefire prioritizes their partnership. Balefire Goods is respected and recognized for their positive impact and worldwide partnerships and is equally highlighted for their unique and quality creations. They help individuals and families figure out ways to get more out of items they already own, including repairing or refreshing personal favorites. They introduce diamond-seekers to colored stones like spinel, beryl, and sapphires, which Jamie
