Hats Off to the Gents! WELCOME TO JUNE, MIDLOTHIAN! This month will usher us in to summer, where things may look quite different from years past. As this issue went to press, most of us have been quarantined at home for about two months. Yet in the midst of our isolation, residents and businesses throughout Midlothian and Greater Richmond are continuing to give back. Some are making face masks for healthcare workers and the elderly. Others are donat-

We salute PartnerMD for its generosity as we applaud everyone who has pulled together to make our community a shining example of what it means to “support local” and impact others for the good. Meanwhile, we all look forward to the reopening of our businesses, schools, churches and activity centers, with the hope of picnics, family reunions,

HEAVY HITTERS FOR THE HOMETOWN TEAM OUTSTANDING LOCAL MEN DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO BUSINESS, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY
WHAT ARE YOU PROUDEST OF? Bringing an incredible group of talented people together, working for a common goal, and understanding that success collectively does not limit success individually. Our team members and builder partners have all reached greater heights of success due to not having to chase that success alone. Helping one another, we’ve all been able to achieve success much quicker than we could have on our own.

HOW SHOULD WE SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY? Ultimately, we’re all a community that relies on one another in times of need. No matter where you are in life, this same community either helped you get where you are or will help you get where you want to be. So, take an active role in giving back and helping others. BEST ADVICE GOTTEN OR GIVEN? It usually isn’t the most naturally gifted or talented person, or the person with the biggest head start, who ultimately ends up on top. It’s the person who wanted it most, dreamt about it, worked at it, worked some more, and then worked again. I truly believe that anything is possible if you’re willing to sacrifice to make it a reality. YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE? When not working, I’m either on the water or attending a sporting event. I’m constantly trying to conquer the one sport that seems to elude everyone - golf. 18

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? I was proud to earn the designation “Certified Professional Résumé Writer.” It was great to be recognized by the Professional Association of Résumé Writers as an industry expert. As one of only 20 CPRWs in Virginia, I make it my mission to customize every résumé to be sure I clearly communicate each person’s unique value. I also develop cover letters, update LinkedIn profiles, conduct interview prep sessions, teach job search tactics, and coach people through career transitions. HOW DO YOU SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY? Because I own my business, I can offer discounts to people in need. During the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve been offering résumé reviews for only $25 to help people learn to improve their job search documents. I’ve also offered training to teach best practices to nonprofits. HOW DO YOU FIND WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I work from home and am an extrovert, so it’s not always easy! Integrating both lives, like walking the dog during my workday, helps me be productive in both areas. BEST LESSON LEARNED? “If you ask 100 people, you’ll get 110 different opinions.” This phrase is true in general, but especially in my industry. I’ve learned I can’t let anyone’s opinion matter except my client’s. I tend to overanalyze, so I force myself to drown out the noise and listen only to my client. As an expert, you can’t let other voices stop you from doing what you believe is best. HOW DO YOU RELAX? Exercise is a big part of my life. I try every day to do pushups or squats in my office, do a HIIT workout on the deck, lift weights at the gym, or go jogging. Working out helps me relieve stress, release endorphins, and not feel guilty when I want a little extra dessert. 20

Advancing the parks and recreation industry through mentoring, developing social media and networking platforms, and educating others. HOW DO YOU SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY? As a servant leader, I recognize the vital role our facilities and services play. In stressful times like the pandemic, parks are a place of restoration as residents seek physical activity, emotional tranquility, and a change of environment. BEST ADVICE? From my grandfather, a farmer, I learned the importance of hard work. Cultivate the land, plant in the appropriate season, add fertilizer, pray for rain, and harvest in due season. The same is true for life. HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE AND FUN? I relax with my family at many of Chesterfield’s 59 parks and 258 athletic fields, watching our children participate in sports and attending events like Hops in the Park and the Fourth of July celebration. We also enjoy quiet time at home with our fur-baby, Jazz.

T h e We a t h e r ’s A l w ay s G r e a t at X-Golf YOU’LL NEVER MISS A TEE TIME AGAIN NOW THAT HIGH-TECH INDOOR GOLF FACILITY HAS COME TO TOWN IT’S NOT UNCOMMON FOR BROTHERS TO BE COMPETITIVE. But for Josh and Kyle Engelken, with just one year separating them in age, sibling rivalry was almost a non-issue – at least as it relates to their new business venture. “We always wanted to go into business together,” said Josh. “We’re both passionate about golf. We fell in love with the concept and the technology.” The concept? Interactive indoor golf. The Engelken brothers co-own the X-Golf facility that opened in March at Westchester Commons. Josh, the general manager, relocated to Bon Air from North Carolina, joining Kyle, who manages operations and back office considerations while continuing to work for a financial technology company in Richmond. 28

The facility was open only a couple weeks and operating under social distancing protocols when it was obliged to close due to the COVID-19 quarantine. The Engelkens are planning another grand opening and special events for later in the year. Midlothian’s X-Golf is a local franchise of a nationwide indoor golfing phenomenon that began in Michigan in 2015. With X-Golf, enthusiasts can comfortably enjoy the sport yearround and in any kind of weather. Midlothian’s X-Golf is the only location in Virginia – the next closest is in Philadelphia. A second location in Northern Virginia is expected to open later. X-Golf offers six semi-private simulators that customers use to “hit” the ball “into” a screen that mimics a real golf course. Customers can select a 9- or 18-hole experience, as well as driving range mode and competition events (closest to the pin, longest drive, etc.). Customers also can choose to play one of 50 world-famous courses, such as Pebble Beach, Harbour Town and Bay Hill – or even just one particular hole. In addition to the golfing, customers enjoy an array of amenities including full food and bar service (including local craft beers) within the 6,000-square-foot facility. “There’s a trend toward a total dining and entertainment experience,” Kyle said. Because the simulators are semi-private, they can accommodate a variety of customers, he added. “You can bring the family,” Kyle said. “The environment is adaptable to date nights and really lends itself to events, like corporate outings or leagues.” State-of-the-art simulators differentiate X-Golf from similar facilities. At X-Golf in Midlothian, simulators come equipped with auto-teeing capabilities that gather the ball for the player and tee it up at the exact, individualized height for each user. “Our simulators are among the most accurate,” said Josh. “Our combination of high-speed cameras, lasers and impact sensors measure ball and swing data to an unrivaled 98% accuracy.” As such, the facility can suit golfers of all abilities, from casual player to expert. The brothers are partnering with golf pro T.W. Pulliam to offer lessons to help customers improve their games. Pulliam, who served as the director of golf at Dominion Golf Club in Glen Allen for nearly two decades, also is expected to work with local high school and college golf teams. Pulliam, affiliated as well with Tuckahoe Sports Inc.,

works with youth sports leagues and teaches baseball and softball in addition to golf. For the future, the brothers are considering other partnerships with local golf clubs to share promotions and offer discounts, as well as the addition of other game options including shuffleboard and foosball. www.xgolfrichmond.com

GIVING BACK
HELPING M I L I TA RY FA M I L I E S FIND THEIR FOOTING
THE MEN, WEARING STREET CLOTHES AND SOME STILL IN SHOES, LAY ON THE FLOOR IN VARIOUS STATES OF REPOSE, CIRCLING A YOGA TEACHER GUIDING THEIR RELAXATION FROM AN INSTRUCTIONAL PERCH IN A CHAIR. “By the end, some of them were snoring,” said the instructor, Renee Champagne-Davis. “It was tough to get them moving afterward.” The Yellow Ribbon Program had come to Champagne-Davis, M.Ed., owner of the health coaching company Sustaining Youth and Families LLC, to learn skills to help with reintegration and reduce stress after deployments. Champagne-Davis’s work with active-duty personnel, veterans and military families in Williamsburg is just one example of a broad spectrum of mental health assistance available throughout Virginia and nationwide. A veteran, mother of three teens and an active-duty spouse, ChampagneDavis speaks from experience. Her own background includes military service, sexual assault and an ongoing journey to recovery from PTSD. An athlete who has run more than 50 marathons, two 50-milers and a number of triathlons, Champagne-Davis did what many with PTSD do – tried to stay busy. “I believed if I served others, ran races and continued my education, I would feel better and fill the void,” she said. “But exactly the opposite happened. I ended up exhausted and disconnected. This exacerbated the symptoms of my PTSD, which directly affected my ability to function. When I realized it was okay to feel emotions like shame, guilt, sadness and anger, that’s when the healing began.” Now Champagne-Davis, who holds a master’s degree in clinical mental health from the College of William and Mary and various certifications in yoga and wellness, devotes her energy to “after care” - helping service members and their families find health and joy as she did. She teaches that the path to a balanced recovery comes through healthy eating, outdoor experiences, mindfulness, and talk therapy. In particular, Champagne-Davis promotes “integrative restoration” or “iRest,” a type of yoga that emphasizes meditation and mindfulness in a specialized practice that suits veterans under stress, who may find unwelcome triggers in standard yoga settings. 30

AFTER FIGHTING WARS, VETERANS AND THEIR LOVED ONES BATTLE PTSD THROUGH MINDFULNESS, OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AND HEALTHY HABITS
“ L e a r n i n g t o e a t h e a l t h y, being in the outdoors, practicing iRest and yoga – all these things are what can foster p o s t - t r a u m a t i c g r o w t h .” “By learning to eat healthy, being in the outdoors, and practicing rest – all these things are what foster post-traumatic growth,” she said. Champagne-Davis says she’s one of many veterans driven to create service organizations focused on helping veterans build new lives after transitioning out of the military. She has worked with various partners including Warriors at Ease, a 501(c)(3) that uses yoga and meditation to ease combat-related health symptoms, and Give an Hour®, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that helps military members and families connect with mental health and other services. Founded in 2005 on the premise of motivating volunteers to donate time to volunteering, Give an Hour has evolved to focus on forging relationships with providers to make needed services available. Providers agree to offer at least 52 hours of service annually, most in the form of face-to-face or tele-counseling, but other services as well, said project manager Katie Civiletto, MHA. A provider search on Give an Hour’s website using a Midlothian ZIP code generated more than three dozen returns, nearly a dozen locally. “Thanks to the generosity of providers like Renee and our donors, Give an Hour is proud to offer mental health services to veterans, military and their loved ones,” Civiletto said. “In the past 15 years, we have offered over 311,000 hours of support, valued at nearly $31 million. The need continues to grow, and we stand ready to continue to offer help for as long as it is needed.” https://sustainingyouthandfamilies.com/ ARTICLE MARY ELLIN ARCH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
