As November rolls around, we’re anxiously awaiting the approach of Thanksgiving, the holiday season and time spent with family and friends. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade, sporting events or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together Yorba Linda Lifestyle magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from the community that make what we do so rewarding. People Who Inspire Us LOCAL RESIDENTS FIND PURPOSE THROUGH SERVICE TO OTHERS ARTICLE KRISTEN FEWEL

“IF YOU HAVE A HEARTBEAT, THERE’S STILL TIME FOR YOUR DREAMS. MAKE DREAMS HAPPEN FOR OTHER PEOPLE, AND YOU’LL BE FLOODED WITH MIRACLES.” –SEAN STEPHENSON THE PASSION EXUDING FROM INSPIRED PEOPLE IS THE ENERGY THAT STIRS OUR HEARTS. Sometimes it comes from a need to do what is good and right for another person. Some people are driven to create something that will outlast themselves, but the greatest creation is something that will outlast our memory. We are most fortunate to learn about what drives these people to greatness in hopes that some of that passion will rub off on us, to inspire us to pursue our own dreams. This month, we are featuring inspiring people in our community and the work they do to benefit others. We started with a conversation with Mayor Tara Campbell, an inspiring person we featured in September, about the highly inspirational people she knows in our community. The people we are featuring here not only overcame some challenging circumstances to bring their dream to life, but they are also using their work to benefit others, shining a bright light through our community. 20

Alexander Behura is the creator of the MAX Program.

Alexander Behura Alexander Behura has a brother, Max, who has severe autism. Alexander was just 15, sitting in an airport with his family when he realized what services his well-traveled family needed to better care for Max that were lacking in all the places they had visited. Alexander, at age 16, got to work creating the MAX Program, a travel assistance program for people with autism and other cognitive disabilities. He began a letter-writing campaign to interest various organizations, and the first response came from Ian Gee, manager of the Sheraton Park Hotel near Disneyland in Anaheim, California, who invited Alexander to do a presentation to his team. Currently, Sheraton/Marriott Hotels and John Wayne Airport are two local organizations that have adopted the MAX Program or some modification of it based on Alexander’s work. Alexander, now 19 and a sophomore at Duke University, speaks four languages (English, Mandarin, Italian and Bengali), is an expert musician of piano and clarinet, and is interested in cardiac surgery. Alex was born with a serious congenital heart defect and has had two open-heart surgeries. A third surgery is anticipated, but he has not allowed this to slow him down. He has been voted 1 of 100 Most Influential People in Orange County by The Orange County Register for the MAX Program and is currently implementing the MAX Program at Raleigh-Durham Airport, Simon Mall (near San Jose, California,) and Ontario Airport, California. Alexander’s work ethic, he says, comes from his family of immigrants who worked several jobs and studied hard in college. “The values of working hard, pushing myself and setting lofty goals were ingrained in me since early childhood," Alexander says. "I was exposed to multiple languages—between us, we can speak six—and loved different types of music. Hence, these activities never seemed like work to me.” Alexander is humble about his blessings and does his duty to embody his father’s favorite quote: “To whom much is given, much will be required.” “The work I have done is to try to bring changes in society to make [Max’s] life, and the lives of others like him, a little easier,” he says. “I feel that as his big brother it is my duty to watch over him, and what I am doing is just part of it.” CONTINUED >

PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE US

(CON TI N U ED)

Isabella Tejeda is the founder of Read a Story, Change a Life.

Isabella Tejeda In 2017, 15-year-old Isabella Tejeda was considering a Gold Award project for Girl Scouts when it occurred to her that many local children were in need of literacy intervention, and that meant direct access to books. This concerned her enough to ask for help in creating a project that would lead children to the books that would ultimately change their life for the better. She asked Joe Baldo, the director of Anaheim, California-based nonprofit Higher Ground Youth & Family Services, about assisting her in this call to action. This partnership launched Read a Story, Change a Life, Isabella’s dream for inspiring children’s imagination and confidence in literacy. Isabella was drawn to help the children in her community who didn’t have the same access to literacy that she did. She learned that the children who attended Higher Ground Youth and Family Services lived not so far from her home yet struggled with poverty, gangs and literacy, often reading two grade levels below their peers. Many did not access books from local libraries due to fears of not being able to afford overdue or lost book fees. As a child, Isabella spent hours in the Yorba Linda Public Library, attending storytimes and reading mystery and action-adventure books. “Reading is so important to everyone,” she says. “I’m passionate about helping kids and believe I have a connection with them.” Now a 17-year-old Rosary Academy student living in Yorba Linda, Isabella says that age doesn’t define the ability to create change in the world. “My best advice for other teens who desire to make a change is to just go for it. Confidently and passionately put your request out there. Don’t take no for an answer. Find your ‘yes.’” Isabella’s story of service is featured in a newly released book titled Inspiring Stories That Make a Difference by the Loukoumi Foundation, a book of 75 stories from philanthropic kids around the nation who are making a lasting positive change in their communities.

Cindy DeMint spearheaded a documentary movie and a nonprofit organization to fund treatment and a cure for ataxia AOA2.

Cindy DeMint Cindy DeMint advocates like a mother like no other. She married her high school sweetheart, Gerry, her husband of 39 years, and together they created a family-first faith-based life she always dreamed of. But when their eldest son was diagnosed with a rare form of ataxia, a neurological disease that attacks the cerebellum in the brain, normal life for her family was about to change dramatically. The result of genetic testing for their immediate family revealed all three of their boys are carriers of the gene for Ataxia AOA2, while her daughter and their three grandchildren are not. Cindy’s strength and initiative to help her sons led her to lead an ataxia support group and is now on the Board of Directors for the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF). “I knew God’s purpose for me was to be a mom,” Cindy says with tears welling up with this truth in her eyes, “But my purpose is to find a cure for ataxia.” Cindy is best known as the leader of the annual Walk-N-Roll to Cure Ataxia around Eastlake every September to raise money for the NAF and awareness for ataxia in general. But Cindy’s greatest advocacy for her sons was creating their own nonprofit organization, Brothers on a Quest, that will fund research to lead to a cure for her sons’ specific form of ataxia, AOA2. To advance their cause, Cindy spearheaded the effort for her family to take part in the making of a documentary with filmmaker RJ Hall called We Are Strong. Now that the DeMint family has obtained the rights to the film, the proceeds from video purchases, merchandise, sponsorships and donations will go directly to Brothers on a Quest to fund research and a cure at UCLA. Cindy connected with Dr. Brent Fogel, director of the Ataxia and Neurogenetics Biobank at UCLA, who will be performing the research on gene expression of the AOA2 type. Find out more about ataxia and the DeMint family's story by watching the documentary trailer for We Are Strong on YouTube or the full feature at WeAreStrongMovie.com. All donations go to fund Brothers on a Quest for ataxia AOA2. November 2019 | Yorba Linda Lifestyle

Sunset skydiving in Banning, Calif.

VIEW FROM THE SKY The Cessna 206 aircraft lofts from the tarmac into the air on a wintry day for yet another successful adventure for a pair of special people. The plane steadily rises through the clean, crisp air above the desert mountains. As the aircraft lifts toward the thin, wispy cirrus clouds several thousand feet higher, the landforms of the desert basin below take on a watercolor haze, appearing soft and inviting in the distance. This is the dropzone for Skydive West Coast, a paradise for the positive adrenaline rush of a lifetime. Robbie and Tanya Spencer, owners and co-founders of Skydive West Coast, are experts on the sky, its weather and the terrain as far as the eye can see. Robbie, originally from South Africa, and Tanya, from England, have traveled the world and agree that Southern California has the most excellent weather for skydiving year-round. They share abundantly with their guests on the landforms and sky features to help their guests feel more comfortable in a new environment. Robbie and Tanya are the only husband and wife team of expert skydivers that jump with their customers, called tandem skydives, for people who are not trained in the sport but wish to enjoy the experience. For this special couple, the ascent is the appetizer, the visual tour is the main course, and the jump is the decadent, transcendent dessert. From the Cessna’s glass roll-top door, Robbie points out into the vast space above Banning Airport toward the San Gregonio Pass toward the Big Bear Mountains to the north, the San Jacinto Mountains to the south, and all the way to the Salton Sea. Robbie reminds you: “After you do this, you can do anything!” Yes. Yes, you can. You are thoroughly engrossed in the beauty of the moment, in the protection of two of the most expert skydivers in the world, encouraged that indeed you can do this. SOAR LIKE A BIRD Your reservation is confirmed. You take a delightful drive out to Banning Airport to meet Robbie and Tanya. Parachutes and aircraft are packed and checked. Robbie and Tanya equip you with special harnesses especially for tandem skydives and explain how you will be safely connected to them during the tandem skydive. All you need to do now is enjoy the ride. Smiles beaming, you board the plane together for a 20-minute ascent and a scenic tour to 12,500 feet. When the drop zone is in sight and the time is right, Robbie and Tanya take you for an adrenaline-filled freefall, soaring like a bird, then release the parachute, for gliding and taking in the most spectacular sights. The whole landscape opens up for you with brightly snow-capped mountains over cloud-shadowed valleys, patches of green Joshua trees in the sandy desert, and on a crystal-clear day, CONTINUED >

a glint of sun rays off the Pacific Ocean. Skydiving is not like being in an airplane. “It is the closest to flying like a bird that you can get. You don’t feel like you’re falling; you feel like you’re flying like a calm, soaring bird,” Robbie says. LOVE IS IN THE AIR Robbie, a commercial pilot and worldtraveling skydiver, found himself in England in 1991 where Tanya, an award-winning parachute packer, safety trainer and skydiver, was living. They became close friends and stayed in touch even when their paths diverged to travel the world. When they reunited several years later, love was in the air, and two years ago, they decided to get married and settle in the Southern California desert. With over thousands of jumps and 60 years of skydiving experience between them, they launched their lives into the birth of their very own skydiving experience and training business, Skydive West Coast. Inspired by their love story, many couples come for a skydive to get engaged and even get married! The future of skydiving is more than just an adrenaline rush for thrill-seekers. Skydive West Coast wants to work with organizations such as Windy Warrior that help people who have had accidents and negative experiences with adrenaline post-trauma and PTSD. They have found that tandem skydiving can help individuals who are ready to create a positive and safe adrena-

business, relationships and life. Robbie and Tanya agree that after a veritable flood of positive adrenaline, “You’ll never look at the sky the same way, ever.”

BRAVE DANCER

NAIA PARKER SHINES ON WORLD OF DANCE

ARTICLE KRISTEN FEWEL

30

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | November 2019

WHEN NAIA PARKER IS AT HOME WITH PEOPLE SHE TRUSTS, LIKE MOST TWEENS, SHE KNOWS HOW TO SPEAK HER MIND. But at a very early age, extreme shyness in unfamiliar situations muted her verbal expression. Naia’s parents sought help for their daughter’s condition, called selective mutism, through supportive homeschooling; patient, caring teachers at dance class; and inspiring role models. A seed of expression took hold in the dance studio, where her love for music and movement were encouraged to bloom when her mother, Robyn, took her to Mommy and Me classes and developed a passion for music with her father, Ken, a musician and teacher. Naia’s dedication to dance led to the Crazy 8’s, an elite competitive dance team that trains at the Orange County Performing Arts Academy in Anaheim Hills. Earlier this year, the stage was set for Naia and the Crazy 8’s to compete on season 3 of NBC’s World of Dance, where she met one of her dance idols, Jennifer Lopez, who is a judge on the show. Asked who inspires her to work so hard at dance, Naia shared that Hannahlei Cabanella, the winner of Season 15 of So You Think You Can Dance, who also studies dance at OCPAA, has been a huge inspiration. Another person Naia holds in high regard is Amy Berokoff, her dance teacher and choreographer for the Crazy 8’s at Orange County Performing Arts Academy, with whom she has developed a close bond over the years. As Naia is now more frequently recognized, she inspires her own fans of 22,000 Instagram followers as a model for Sadie Jane’s Jake Nothing Brave collection of dance and activewear. She also has accepted ambassadorships for two other dance clothing companies: Discount Dance and Tiger Friday. Sharing her story on World of Dance has brought nationwide awareness to selective mutism, which has encouraged Naia to be brave enough at times to speak. According to both her parents, Naia recognizes the powerful support she feels from God, her family, friends and teachers. Out of the quiet presence comes a strong message Naia wants people to know: “I may be quiet, but I am brave. Selective mutism does not keep me from dancing! It’s how I express myself.”
