One of our favorite things about San Clemente is that there is a seat for anyone and everyone at the "table." It's part of what makes us so special. SAN CLEMENTE’S DRINK OF 2019 INGREDIENTS + Fresh-pressed white peach juice + Fresh-pressed Georgia peach juice + Fresh-pressed white grape juice + White tea + Essence of mint + Simple syrup + Bulleit bourbon
This peachy-keen bourbon beauty is the brainchild of The Local’s owner, Hooman Mofidi, and front-of-house manager Frankie Tombini. Subtly sweet, this drink is an easy sipper, but don’t be fooled; that Bulleit packs a punch! Rolling into this year’s 15th Annual San Clemente Mixologist Competition held at H.H. Cotton’s, the duo knew they wanted to bring an original bourbon drink to the table. The combined effort had a few trial runs, adjusting sweetness with the addition of white tea and adding in mint for a refreshing twist. The end result: a peach profile that perfectly complements the gentle spiciness and light toffee flavor of the Bulleit bourbon. At the competition, the Peach Destiny was awarded the Judges’ Choice Award and dubbed “San Clemente’s Drink” for 2019. Served in a beautiful hammered copper mug and garnished with a peach slice and fresh mint, this drink has the looks and the goods!

THE LOCAL: GREAT FOOD, EVEN BETTER PEOPLE
Bodacious Burgers ARTICLE MELANIE FOUST PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE DEAVILLE KIRKLAND
LEADING UP TO OUR FOODIE ISSUE, WE KNEW WE WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT A NEWER PLACE THAT DIDN’T HAVE AS MUCH RECOGNITION BUT HAD SOME GOOD FOOD. When you walk down Del Mar, you are met by countless restaurants and options to satisfy your hunger, but one that recently caught our eye was The Local. Its exterior blends seamlessly with the aesthetic of San Clemente. The modern, Spanish exterior is complemented by the beautiful, colored tiles that accent its walls. The patio is inviting, filled with community-style tables and lined with countless plants. The most incredible thing about this place, however, is the heartbeat behind it. Hooman Mofidi, the owner and executive chef, is one of the most down-toearth guys you’ll ever meet. Originally from Newport Beach, he grew up cooking. At 23, he moved to New York City for culinary school. What was originally supposed to be one year quickly turned into eight. After graduating, he worked his way up, starting at the salad station, then to line cook, sous chef, and six years later, he opened his restaurant in New York. 18
Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | October 2019
What moved him back to Orange County nine years ago was his family. At the time, his mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and as an only child, he wanted to move back to help take care of her. (She is now healthy and has been in remission for six years!) His parents had moved to San Clemente previously, and having not spent much time here before, he immediately fell in love with it. When we asked him what the thought was behind calling it “The Local,” he responded by saying often times people confuse it to mean that he is the local, but once again you see his big heart come through. The idea behind the name was to create a space that could be your local pub and bar, a place for you. The mission behind this restaurant has always been to be more than just a place to be fed, but a place to be known. Hooman was quick to brag about his right-hand gal and front-of-house manager, Frankie Tombini, someone he couldn’t do this without. “It’s like Cheers,” he says. “She remembers everybody’s name.” Both Hooman and Frankie are keen on people enjoying themselves and do their best to make everyone feel welcomed and at home. Even their employees stick around for a long time. They have certainly created a culture that so beautifully reflects the family atmosphere that San Clemente prides itself on. The Local is his second restaurant here in San Clemente, the first being Poche Burger near the DMV. Don’t be fooled by the informal exterior; the food they serve is top-notch and made from scratch. One of our favorite things they offer is Bottomless Brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for—wait for it—$25. Yeah, our jaw dropped too. To sweeten the deal, they also feature Bottomless Drinks for an additional $25. Crab eggs Benedict with jalapeno-sage hollandaise, a halfpound breakfast burger on a pretzel bun, avocado toast and chicken and waffles with salted caramel sambal sauce (drooling) are among their brunch menu items. Their dinner menu is extensive as well and features the same creativity and excellence. From amazingly unique appetizers perfect for sharing with friends to a tomahawk rib-eye weighing in at 28 ounces, you will love it all! A few crowd favorites: Mussels y chorizo, poké and crispy rice, ramen with miso broth and pork belly, and a Carolina crispy barbecue chicken sandwich served on a pretzel bun.

the VERDICT What drew us in, however, was their lunch menu that features a list of six burgers, all of which come with fries and a house beer for $8. You definitely get the bang for your buck here. The lunch menu is available Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there is something on it for everyone. You have your classic cheeseburger with grilled onions and secret sauce, a barbecue bacon cheeseburger with onion rings and house-made barbecue sauce, a bacon cheeseburger, a bacon mushroom burger, an avocado burger and a jalapeno cream cheeseburger with fresh jalapenos and cream cheese. We took it upon ourselves to make a visit and try each of their featured burgers—and we loved them.

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | October 2019
FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU DO? Kailin: Keanu is a professional surfer, and I’m a professional MMA fighter. HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET? Kailin: We actually grew up together in Hawaii. His sister and I have been best friends since the third grade, so we’ve always known each other. HOW DID YOU START LIKING EACH OTHER? WHEN WAS THAT? It wasn’t until later, when we were older, that we kind of reconnected and started hanging out a lot. ...We were just there for each other when we were both personally going through some rough things in our lives and just ended up liking each other. That was the end of 2010, the beginning of 2011. KAILIN, WHAT DREW YOU TO FIGHTING? What drew me to fighting would have to be a group of girlfriends I had in middle school/high school. We wanted to start kickboxing, and we showed up to this gym in Ewa Beach where I’m from. There were all these guys training there, and I don’t think they took us seriously, so we literally had to show them that we were serious and that we wanted to be there. When I was 18 years old, I was able to fight in my first amateur MMA event, and after I won that fight, I looked at it and just kind of decided that it was something that I wanted to do. I didn’t think it was going to be a career but then moved to California and got signed to UFC for a couple of years and had six fights with

WHEN DID YOU MOVE TO SAN CLEMENTE? Keanu: I moved here first in 2012, and Kailin came to visit and later moved here in 2013.
WE KNOW YOU ARE BOTH FOODIES. DO YOU LIKE TO COOK? Kailin: Yes, we both like to cook, but Keanu enjoys it more than I do.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO LIVE HERE? Keanu: I grew up competing in San Clemente during the summers and was super familiar with the area. Later, I had the opportunity to live with one of my sponsors here and just fell in love with the area.
KEANU, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO COOK? I love cooking salmon or anything that I can put on my Traeger grill.
Kailin: Yeah, it reminds us very much so of Hawaii, just because we’re near the ocean. We love that it’s a little beach town. The people here are really nice and family-oriented. ... The culture here is really chill. We love

It’s a Mask-er-Aid! SEASONAL SKIN CARE TIPS FOR AUTUMN
ARTICLE LISA BRILL
PUMPKIN LATTES, THE CRUNCH OF FALLEN LEAVES, A COOLER CHANGE IN THE AIR. We may be excited that it’s sweater weather, and with a little nudge, our skin can keep the healthy summer glow through all of it. No matter what the season, skin should feel and look dewy but not oily. As the air gets drier, skin begrudgingly often follows suit. Skin can be influenced radically by the change in seasons. It’s time to enrich the skin with botanical nutrients that keep that supple glow all through the seasons. When the autumn leaves start to hit the ground, it’s a good time to amp up the hydration and moisture skin craves. This is the perfect time to overhaul the wardrobe and revamp the skin care routine. Qet Botanicals Skin Suites offer hydrating and moisturizing benefits that help keep the skin healthy and dewy. Adding an active mask once or twice a week is like taking a much-needed multivitamin for the skin. Including a mask keeps our skin happy by feeding it with various nourishing and pampering nutrients. Even if skin is essentially happy, the slight change in the seasons can bring on issues that you may be trying to avoid the rest of the year. For 10 extra minutes just once or twice a week, including a purposeful and skin-loving mask can be the difference between decent skin and divine skin. Our favorites are: 1. Smoothing – Green Tea Mask with Green Cacao 2. Purifying – Honey Cream Mask with Active Manuka 3. Hydrating – Lavish Serum Salve 4. Free Radical Fighting – Antioxidant Mask with Cranberry Qet Botanicals Skin Suites are always made with safe ingredients and something for every condition of skin. Let’s keep reading ingredients, let’s keep it safe, and let’s keep glowing—no matter what the weather is doing.
