The greatest risk any time you’re near the water is, of course, drowning. This is true for kids in particular.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 14.

HERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT WATER SAFETY TIPS: + Supervise children at all times when near a body of water. + Keep kids under age 5 within arm’s reach. + Don’t depend on swimming aids like floaties; opt instead for approved flotation devices, especially when in open water or on a boat. + Know the signs of drowning (they aren’t always what you think). + Learn CPR. + Get your kids swimming lessons (and you, too, if needed).Two of the signs of drowning include the lack of ability to call or wave for help and staying vertical or upright in the water — behaviors that might be easy to miss.

IMPORTANT Be sure the peanut butter you use does not contain xylitol—the artificial sweetener can be fatal to dogs.

Peanut Butter + Oats INGREDIENTS + 1 cup old-fashioned oats + 1/2 cup flour + 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter + 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 300 F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together oats, flour, peanut butter and egg until combined.

3. Roll your dough out on a flat surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.

4. Cut out your dog’s favorite shapes with cookie cutters.

5. Place your treats onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Makes about 36 1-inch diameter treats.

+ BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds.

Westfield's Dog Bark!

EVERY DOG CAN HAVE A DAY IN THE PARK! LOCATED ON 125 LOCKHOUSE ROAD IN WESTFIELD, MA, THE DOG PARK IS A HIT WITH BOTH DOG AND OWNER ALIKE. Your dog(s) will enjoy free running within the fenced in park, and an opportunity to play with other dogs. Owners find the park a wonderful place to interact with their pets, as well as make human social connections with other owners.

The park is a fenced in area with tree cover, offering partial shade for the park benches and picnic style tables. The ground is bedded with wood chips, keeping the park mostly dust and mud free. Dog waste bags and disposal receptacles are in the park for owners to clean up after their animal(s). A water faucet for drinking water is available (closed in winter). Visitor donations often keep a supply of water bowls, dog toys, and tennis balls available at the park.

FIRST TIME SUGGESTIONS Here are some other things you should review to help make your visit to the dog park a success. + First time users should consider coming at off-peak times for their initial visit. At times, the park can become quite crowded. If you are not sure how your dog will react to the current conditions, don’t put pressure on your dog by forcing it into what it thinks is a threatening situation. Instead, come back at another time when it is less crowded. + If entering or leaving the off-leash area, do not enter the double-gated transition area if there is already someone in that area. This will eliminate the possibility of both gates being open at the same time. + Place your dog off leash in the transition area before entering the unleashed area. Some dogs can feel threatened if they are leashed in the presence of unleashed dogs.

Westfield Dog Bark Friends is dedicated group of volunteers working together to maintain the dog friendly area at Arm Brook Park.The organization, along with the Parks & Recreation Dept, has been working to bring the citizens, both canine and human, a dog friendly fenced in area.
