#BetterTogether WELL, IT’S OFFICIALLY SUMMER. As I’m writing this letter, it’s the end of April. Normally, I can project out and see what the month (or so) ahead will look like. I’m afraid it’s a little more difficult this year.

I have no idea if June will feel like June, or if summer will feel like summer. Will people be swimming in pools? Eating in restaurants? Will they be at barbecues or catching up on graduation parties? Will the tennis courts be full and will the parks be littered with rambunctious kids and adults, soaking up the excitement of what’s been missed? Or will the infection and death rates soar, and will we still be becoming that much more intimate with the paint on our walls? I don’t know. But here’s what I do know: the SoFu community has come together to support its own. The Chambers have banded together to offer free virtual classes and education. The Cities stood together to do their best to keep its residents safe and protect their own, with some cities even creating funds to support the frontline and essential workers. And YOU, SoFu have supported it all. So no, I don’t have a crystal

GOOD TIMES

Mardi Gras Soiree Presented by Xavier University of Louisiana Atlanta Alumni Chapter For over three decades Xavier University of Louisiana—the only Catholic HBCU in the country—has been number one in placing AfricanAmerican students into medical and other pre-professional programs. With an annual tuition of $28,000, a large percentage of students depend upon scholarship monies to matriculate there. Each year, the Atlanta alumni chapter hosts an annual scholarship event to raise such funds for their beloved alma mater and current students. This year, the chapter, under the new leadership of Chapter President Kamala Rimmey, mixed things up a bit. In lieu of a Sunday afternoon jazz brunch, a Saturday evening scholarship banquet was held, and what a phenomenal inaugural event it was! The highly praised event, held at the Impact Event Center, hosted approximately 200 guests. Rave reviews continue to pour in from Alumni, FoXs (Friends of Xavier), and other supporters. The event committee included Erica Taylor, Inga Lewis and Kimberley Alston (Chair).

The “South Fulton United Fund” will support the daily meals program as well as create a fund for the recovery efforts related to COVID-19. All funds collected will be used to purchase daily meals for essential frontline staff working to keep the City of South Fulton safe during the shelter in place order issued by the Governor. Individually packaged meals will be delivered to a safe location for workers to receive meals during their shifts. City of South Fulton restaurants will provide all meals. Restaurants will be paid for these meals, which will help generate much-needed revenue. Lovejoy was paralyzed from the neck down and told that he would never walk again. Fortunately for him, the doctors said nothing about swimming. “I was terrified of water, but it was a part of my rehab. During my 12 sessions, I learned how to relax and not be afraid. The water became my sanctuary,” Lovejoy explains. After completing rehabilitation, he met Coach Tommy Jackson of the City of Atlanta Dolphins Swim Team and the two devised a plan that fueled Lovejoy’s newfound passion. Within two years, Lovejoy was in the pool daily, perfecting his technique and becoming one with the water. He continued to practice, working on his qualifying time for domestic swim meets in hopes of qualifying for international meets. By 1995, he set his first world record at the International Paralympics Swim Trials in the 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle. He was also invited to become a fencer due to his long arms, despite the paralysis in his hands. In 1997, he became the #1 Paralympic fencer in the world. With over 30 years of swimming under his belt, Lovejoy is planning to dry himself off and step away from the pool following the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. With the current Coronavirus pandemic plaguing the world, the medaled swimmer has been forced to refrain from training as well as postpone the trip until 2021, when the games are scheduled to resume. His wife of 12 years will be by his side during this break and hopes to travel to Tokyo with her husband when the time comes. “Marie is the backbone of the family and takes good care of me,” Lovejoy says. He also has a daughter and grandson who support him. WHEN A TRAGEDY HAPPENS, IT’S EASY TO SINK INTO
