"Making stuff" is the future. Coding and crafting robots to making circuits that allow things to fly is the latest and greatest trend for kids.  Check out the feature on Code Ninjas, one of Vinings local businesses that should be on every child's to do list. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers issue, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. The Smyrna Vinings arts scene is full of handmade goods from local artisans.    Some of our favorite arts-related things to experience around the area include the American Crafts Show coming up next month.  With our own bustling creative scene—from jewelry makers and potters to musicians and actors—we hope you find inspiration here in Smyrna and Vinings. LIFE IS SHORT STRETCH IT OUT THE KIKA METHOD® HELPS YOU LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

WHEN DAVID SOUTHERS AND HIS WIFE VIRGINIA LAZALA MOVED TO ATLANTA IN 2018, THEY WANTED TO OPEN A BUSINESS THAT WOULD BENEFIT THE PEOPLE IN THEIR NEW COMMUNITY. David, whose background is in social services, and Virginia, who is a corporate lawyer, were also looking for a healthier, more laid back lifestyle. Before leaving their home state of New Jersey, they started taking classes at Kika Stretch Studio in Montclair. The Kika Method®, a gentle assisted stretching process that encourages the reduction of stress and the elimination of pain in order to feel more energized, was founded by Hakika (“Kika”) DuBose, a dancer and personal trainer. “If you feel better, you have more energy and more drive to do the things that you want to do, versus just thinking about them,” said David. When Kika found out they were moving to Atlanta, she asked if they would be interested in opening their own Kika Stretch Studio. Since David and Virginia loved the way they felt after

attending her sessions, they said yes. And, they found the perfect location right in Vinings (Ivy Walk). Since the whole space has been redone, everything is new. Clients have their own private room with their stretch coaches, who are trained and certified in the Kika Method®. 12

ARTIST’S PALETTE

ADD SOME SPARKLE TO YOUR LIFE

DESIGNER AND CUSTOM JEWELRY FOR ALL TASTES AND STYLES

HIGHLAND DIAMOND, WHICH OPENED ITS DOORS IN 2017 IN MIDTOWN ATLANTA, IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE JEWELRY STORE. While it does feature beautiful jewelry and stylish watches, this boutique store specializes in custom-designed pieces, including the repurposing and repair of heirloom items that have been passed down for generations. There is a full-time jeweler on staff daily, so repairs can be done while customers wait. There’s even a window into the bench room so they can see their jewelry being cleaned and worked on. It always stays on site; nothing is ever sent out. Its owner, John Rothermel, a California native who moved to Alpharetta in 1992, attended the Gemological Institute of America, and because of his talent, is often commissioned to custom design significant pieces of jewelry. Besides Rothermel, there is an entire staff of designers who can take what customers find online or in catalogues and reproduce it. Or, shoppers can choose some pieces that are already in the store and ask them to integrate the designs or certain aspects of the designs into a new piece. They can also design any piece of jewelry that people can dream up. All their customers have to do is describe what they’re looking for, and it can easily be sketched out on a pad. Once this is done and measurements taken, this information is then transferred a computer program to digitally render the piece. This way, clients can see it from all sides. The other unique thing they do is 3D wax printing of custom ARTICLE SUE BALDANI

AS A CODE NINJA

CODE NINJAS SMYRNA/VININGS IS A LOCAL, FAMILY-OWNED BRANCH OF CODE NINJAS’ NATIONAL FRANCHISE. Children learn to code in a fun, safe, and inspiring learning environment. Code Ninjas’ engaging game-based curriculum teaches teamwork, logic, math, and problem-solving. They gain vital skills while having a blast.   As a truly universal language, coding may be the most important second language a child can learn. Much like a foreign language, childhood and early adolescence is the perfect time to teach coding while kids are still learning, “how to learn.”  Children 5-9 years old start with Code Ninjas JR, coding  through a fun and completely visual curriculum. Code Ninjas Create is the core program for children 7-14, that to learn to code year-round. Code Ninja offers a community of like-minded coders and gamers! It is an ongoing program where children can physically meet each other up to two hours per week. The classes are led by Code Senseis who are seen as their peers and not just instructors or teachers. Code Ninjas  is a life-long investment that can  shape a child’s choice of friends, classes and clubs in school and eventually his/her career.  Just like math, science, and literature, coding is a key aspect of understanding our technologically advanced world. There’s a huge need for this generation to understand  technology and more importantly,  how it works,  regardless  of whether a child pursues a career in coding.  Code Ninjas teaches kids  confidence, logic, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

Girls designing circuits.

BENEFITS CREATIVITY: Kids enjoy building, creating designs and animations, storytelling and building their own imaginary worlds and characters. PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS: Kids learn how to break down big complex problems into a series of small achievable steps.  COLLABORATION

WITH

OTHERS:

Coding requires a group effort. Kids build projects together and learn how to communicate and work together as a team. Teams learn how to compromise with each other while engaging in thought-provoking discussion. CONFIDENCE: Coding encourages students to embrace challenges and failures. It’s a creative and analytical hobby that provides a very different experience.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects computer occupations alone will increase by 12.5 percent between 2014 and 2024 and produce half a million new jobs, more than any other science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupation, according to a 2017 report. Topics include: Intro to Javascript, Game-Building with Scratch, App Building with Android, Roblox Create, Minecraft Create, Website Development, Coding Crones, Robotics, and Circuit Design. Parents and children see real progress and achievement that encourages them to continually learn, grow, with different belt levels just like a real dojo.  Each time a game is submitted, the parent receives an email of their score.  Code Ninja offers summer camps.  Classes will be posted on the website soon. 4691 S Atlanta Rd SEAtlanta, GA 30339 678.203.8603  https://www.codeninjas.com/camps/ga-smyrna February 2020 | Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle

TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW FOR A HEALTHY SMILE 10. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Expensive dental products may help, but proper hygiene techniques and habits are paramount!

9. FOOD CHOICES ARE CRITICAL. Hard or sticky sugary foods are the most common contributors to tooth decay.

8. BIOLOGY MATTERS. Just like any other part of the human body, some of us are genetically more prone to issues like cavities and gum disease.

7. SECRET’S OUT! Plaque is really a mixture of germs, old sugary foods and acidic germ waste. Yep, germ poo is destroying teeth every day.

6. FLOSS FIRST (AND NOT THE DANCE!). Nothing can adequately replace actually getting the string between our teeth. If we floss first, we have a better chance to be more effective in our routine.

5. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Invest 2 minutes every morning and 2 minutes before bed.

4. PREVENTION IS LESS EXPENSIVE. Like most things in life, allowing for problems to persist makes it harder to restore and repair. It’s true for home repair, relationships, education and….TEETH!

3. ACCESS AND ANGLES. When brushing your teeth or your children’s teeth, we must create better access by moving our lips and cheeks out of way. Then gently brush with the bristles angled along the gum line. This adjustment in technique can be a real smile saver.

2. YES, PROFESSIONAL DENTAL VISITS ARE NECESSARY. Waiting until something hurts usually ends up being a bigger problem. If you don’t trust your dental team, it’s ok to get second opinions.

1. IT’S COMPLICATED. Fluoride itself is not harmful but if used incorrectly, it could possibly relate to health problems. When used properly, in can be a great benefit for your teeth. Please supervise brushing to ensure correct spitting and amount of toothpaste through elementary grade years.

BONUS: WHITER IS NOT BETTER. Kids are increasingly dissatisfied with their natural teeth color and are asking for bleaching products. This is related to trends in adult dentistry and the manufactured images they see on mass media. Teeth color has joined weight, height, and hair in a long list of body image insecurities.

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED) and became home to 50 beautiful children in India. They ran into their new home like they it was Disneyland! As they laid on their brand new beds it was the first time they had ever laid on a bed or a pillow in their entire lives. The Angel House staff wrapped their arms around the children and welcomed them into more than just their new homes, but their new lives. The day was memorable, but soon the harsh reality set in – more

than 25 million orphans still lived tragic lives on the streets and in the slums. Who will do something to help them? The Angel House team in India knew far too well the sobering fate of abandoned orphans. Without intervention, each child would succumb to a life of destitution. Angel House could not stop with 1 home. Lindsay and her team refused to just “see” the need, but resolved to take action. Just weeks after the first home opened, Lindsay competed and won on the NBC popular game show “Minute To Win It!” In a single moment, more than 8.5 million households heard about Angel House as Lindsay competed in hopes to use the money to build more homes in India. It was just the beginning! What began as one house construction for just one group of children has now grown into dozens of homes and thousands of children rescued out of the slums! Hundreds of orphans and street children who would otherwise be trapped in forced child labor, human trafficking, or begging on the streets now have a safe place to call home.
