Home for the Holidays I LOVE TO TRAVEL! I try to plan a little trip every other month so I can get out and explore new places. But once I had kids, I implemented a strict policy of staying put and enjoying the holidays at home. There is something special about waking up in our own beds on Christmas morning and making our own holiday traditions right here in our town.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP WINS SAFER GRANT The Liberty Township Fire Department (LTFD) has been awarded the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The grant will reimburse $1.36 million over the next three years for the additional staffing of nine new full-time Firefighter/EMT positions. With the grant, the LTFD will reduce its reliance on part-time personnel from six per day to three per day. The SAFER grant provides funding for 75% of the salary and benefits of an entry-level firefighter for the first two years. In year three, the grant covers 35% of the new hire’s salary and benefits. West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | December 2019
W
HEN FAITH COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN WEST CHESTER WAS LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS TO SUPPORT MISSIONS WITHIN BUTLER COUNTY, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A NEED TO PROVIDE SHELTER AND SERVICES FOR LOCAL CHILDREN AND FAMILIES EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. In 2016, Family Promise of Butler County was born with the mission to serve displaced
children and their families by, “providing shelter, food and comprehensive services that will help them in increasing their income, gaining housing and getting stabilized so that they are successful when they move out,” says Executive Director Linda Smith. Family Promise of Butler County Inc. is a network affiliation with National Family Promise, which has 203 networks in 42 states and has supported over 68,000 homeless family members. There are currently 1,354 homeless school-aged children in Butler County, ranging from age six to 18, and 600 to 650 homeless children between birth and age five. To date, Family Promise of Butler County has helped 69 families, 129 children and 80 adults. The current 12 congregations take turns hosting families for one week, providing food and shelter. Families are bused to the Day Center in downtown Hamilton each day, where they have access to showers, laundry and computers. They work on résumés, apply for jobs and take classes to learn financial literacy, good tenancy and more. “We give individuals and families the tools that they’re going to need in order to be successful when they get out,” Linda explains. “We’re here to listen. We’re here to direct them to other areas if they need it. And I think that’s part of our collaboration with other social service agencies that’s been very effective in serving our families.” The average length of stay for a family within the program is 68 days and they currently have an 87 percent success rate for graduating from the program into affordable housing. “I think one of the biggest successes is that children are attending school every day, are not missing out on classes and are able to get homework done, have access to showers, are well-fed and don’t have to worry about where to sleep,” says Linda. “Last year, all of our school-aged children graduated and moved onto the next grade.” As a newer organization, a big challenge is simply getting the word out and letting the community know what services Family Promise of Butler County provides. Another
2020 GOALS In 2020, Family Promise of Butler County hopes to: + Grow to 18 host congregations to better serve homeless families. The program is heavily driven by volunteers. + Develop programming around social issues like anti-bullying. + Add nutritional programming for families on a tight budget. + Take steps to own their own Day Center, as they are currently leasing space. + Help Family Promise meet these goals and quash homelessness in our county. To learn more about how your church can become a host site and how to contribute, contact Linda at info@familypromisebutlercounty.com. FamilyPromiseButlerCounty.com
is donations, as they are not government funded. According to Linda, they are always accepting financial support and donations of personal care items. The organization is also looking to add six additional churches to the host rotation. Family Promise builds a community around families to give them a place to call home. DURING THE HOLIDAYS, THERE IS SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT FINDING A GIFT THAT PERFECTLY FITS A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER. Crafters have always found ways to add their personal touch by making homemade gifts, but the new MidPointe Library makerspace, Innovation Pointe, offers this option to even more people. The goal of a makerspace is to give you the ability to create physical objects that you’ve designed on a computer or by hand using a variety of fabrication machines and supplies. The machines available at Innovation Pointe render your designs in different physical forms. A laser engraver takes wooden blanks and creates precision laser burns to cut out a shape or etch words and pictures. A Cricut machine makes cuts into iron-on transfers, vinyl, stickers or even leather, based on your designs in a computer program. A 3D printer melts a thread of specialized plastic and deposits it in precise layers to create figurines and projects of all kinds. “You can look online for designs or design items yourself,” says Cari Hillman, community engagement director for the MidPointe Library system. “We circu-

late board games here at the library, so if there is a missing piece, we can actually 3D-print a new piece.” While private citizens can certainly purchase these kinds of machines, having them as a community resource brings down the costs considerably, and MidPointe Library keeps everything affordable for makerspace visitors. “Visitors only pay for consumables; there is no cost to use the machines,” says Cari. “Because we are a nonprofit, we will be charging at our own cost for the materials as well.” The gifts you make can be completely one-of-akind without being expensive, which means the look on your loved one’s face when they see what you made will be priceless too.

Construct an Ornament Beautifully cut pieces slide together to form a 3D wooden ornament, or you can construct a customized gingerbread house of laser-engraved wood for under your tree.
“These projects are so much more than just another item,” says Cari. “These gifts will be personalized and really mean something.” Getting started on a holiday project in a room full of unfamiliar robots and printers may feel daunting, so Innovation Pointe has planned ways to get you started. “The makerspace will have programming related to it, including how to use all the machines. All of our computer programming classes will run through Innovation Pointe,” says Cari. “We hope to have some more creativity-focused programs and events as well as the instructional ones.” Other machines to get to know in the space will include a button maker, which turns your personalized designs into durable shiny buttons, and a soldering iron, appropriate for small-scale metalwork. 28

Design a Toy 3D printer designs of all kinds are available online, including some that create clever movement abilities: this reindeer’s legs can jiggle and help him stand up in different ways.
“We’ll also have film-to-digital conversion for VHS; you can even make DVDs into digital files,” says Cari. “We also have a sublimation machine, which is used to put photographs on mugs or ornaments or other items.” One goal of Innovation Pointe is to be a place for entrepreneurs to get started on their next big idea, perfecting a project using the affordable materials and community-shared machines. “We like the idea of being a business incubator,” says Cari. “If someone wants to create wooden engravings and sell them online, they can do that here. No need to buy a laser engraver of your own at first; we want to help those small businesses get off the ground. We already help people with résumés

The makerspace concept is just another step in what has been a major shift in libraries; they have turned into hubs for all kinds of connection and knowledge-sharing. “Folks think of libraries much more as a community space, rather than just a book depository,” says Cari. “So in the past, we’ve offered coding classes, and we see creativity within those students that we want to foster. The ‘maker’ culture is a perfect fit for us.”

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.
PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE
36
West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | December 2019
FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.
RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.
TWEEDIA This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slipper-shaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait—in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.
NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.
KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring.
