As locals know, after a busy summer full of flux and uncertainty in the news and in the world, the beauty of September in Central Oregon provides an ultimate reset for transitioning into this new season. To celebrate the season of fall fashion, we spoke with Michelle Tullis, owner and designer at the local clothing line Lucky Lady, to learn about a classic article of clothing she considers essential for Central Oregon women. We also learned more about jewelry artist Anna McDonald, who not only mines her own gems, but has introduced South-American-inspired designs to Bend with her Coya Jewelry. RENOVATE & REFINE

DESIGN I N TH E M I X

ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON Whether for permanent fixtures, or in accents of wall art or furniture, the mixture of matte black is a strong starting point for the addition of other tones. PHOTO: Jason Briscoe

COMBINE FINISHES IN EVERY PART OF YOUR HOME FOR ELEGANCE AND INTEREST WE LOVE DESIGN TRENDS THAT ALLOW US THE FREEDOM TO HAVE IT ALL. Whatever color palette grounds your home, the selection of metal fixtures or accents is a place to express the personality of its inhabitants. Even better, mixing metals in design is a budget-friendly option because new fixtures don’t need to be purchased to update a space. No need to be intimidated, just keep a few things in mind.

12

Bend Lifestyle | September 2020

TIP: Pair cool metals like silver, chrome, aluminum and brushed nickel with warm metals, such as gold, copper or brass.

Mixing metals can seem intimidating because of a fear of clash or clutter. A place to start for many is a kitchen or bathroom because of the abundance of fixtures, but a hallway, mudroom or bedroom can be transformed with a few accents. To ease into the design, start with smaller pieces such as mirrors or decorative art with the idea that they don’t need to match, but instead complement each other. While we think of traditional metals, like gold and silver, the easiest trick to remember is that matte black goes with everything—from brushed nickel to brass. Different metals work together to guide the eye toward focal points and items of interest. To get started with this design trend, select a dominant metal as a starting point and let accent metals take the viewer for a tour of things that express your personality.

FIVE TIPS FOR STAYING ACTIVE DURING A PANDEMIC When COVID first began closing the doors of Central Oregon businesses in March, we never imagined how difficult it would be to assimilate. Yet here we are. We were actively trying to make lemonade out of lemons. We live in Central Oregon for the fantastic lifestyle it provides. The abundance of recreation at our fingertips draws tourists from across the globe. But we are also creatures of habit. We like our routines - especially when it comes to exercise. While we don’t know the future, as we near fall, it is critical to consider how to stay active in this new world. Physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It reduces your risk for various health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some cancers. It also strengthens bones and muscles and can slow the loss of bone density that comes with age. For older adults, physical activity can reduce the risk of falls and injuries from falls and can increase your chance of a longer life. Anyone can do it, regardless of age or physical ability—the activity or level of activity changes. People with functional limitations have been especially challenged due to COVID restrictions. Some therapeutic activities, such as swimming and water aerobics, have stopped or been reduced due to restrictions and availability limitations. But there are options to keep active, and as you plan how you are going to invest in your health this fall and winter, we want you to consider the following five tips. 1. Whatever you do, keep moving. Movement increases the lubricating fluid that transports nutrients throughout the body to promote tissue healing. Once you stop moving, your range of motion is reduced. Find another way to stay active while resting the injured body part. If you are concerned about what you can do to safely move, schedule an evaluation with a physical therapist who can provide recommended exercises to keep you active.

2. Invest or rent exercise equipment. At-home gym equipment purchases have skyrocketed. Consider your options if you are looking for a way to stay active and get your heart rate up without risking exposure. From free weights to spin bikes, trainers, and treadmills, you can enjoy many benefits of the gym from home. It is essential to find the positives and negatives of this new reality. If your health is suffering because of reduced or no activity, it may be time to buy. 3. Try online classes. If you are like us, you enjoy the workout and the social aspect of going to the gym. Online classes can help address this partially by giving you a workout that gets your heart pumping while keeping you safe. Online classes are available in abundance. Local fitness centers and gyms provide a variety of class options to meet the individual’s diverse needs. 4. Start walking. We have some beautiful hikes here in Central Oregon that are suitable for a variety of skill levels. A 2020 study from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that you only burn 20% fewer calories walking than running! Walking also improves brain health, memory, energy, immune system, and cardiovascular health. It can also reduce pain. Don’t have time to get out on the trail? Go for a walk in the park, along the river, or in your neighborhood. The point is to get outside and move. If you are going to be in an outdoor place where social distancing will be difficult, wear your mask. 5. You don’t have to live with pain. If pain is keeping you from doing the activities you want, help is available. There is a reason why physical therapy is the first line of defense in treating many conditions. When appropriately applied, physical therapy can help people stay active for life. “Physical therapy is a discipline that successfully treats many types of ailments,” said Barrett Ford, PT. “A physical therapist’s scope of practice can range from cardiopulmonary and neurological conditions to women’s health and pediatrics.”

Lucky Lady Dresses ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON

CLASSIC DESIGNS FROM A LOCAL LINE ENHANCE THE CENTRAL OREGON LIFESTYLE MICHELLE TULLIS IS A BELIEVER THAT THE HARDER YOU WORK, THE LUCKIER YOU BECOME. Not only has it been a guiding mantra for her work as an artist, but it provides a lead (and tag line) for her line of hand-sewn dresses made in Bend called Lucky Lady. Started in 2013 by Rebecca Charleton of downtown’s Cowgirl Cash, the Lucky Lady line of dresses is based on classic designs made unique by the women that wear them. “The vibrant beauty of Central Oregon women embodies the essence of Central Oregon’s active lifestyle,” says Michelle. “These women deserve the opportunity to express that quality through wardrobe.” Michelle herself embodies the spirit of Central Oregon. A native Oregonian, she recalls the experience of playing in her great-grandmother’s closet in Astoria. Working as a single woman during the first half of the century, “She had a real 16

Bend Lifestyle | September 2020

force, independence and such style,” says Michelle whose own closet contains some of her great-grandmother’s silk dresses, gloves and accessories. Michelle inherited that sense of style and loves the feeling of a dress as a go-to article of clothing in her closet. She also inherited a Bernina sewing machine and began sewing in the fourth grade which led to projects, including sewing prom dresses for friends in high school. From those early beginnings, she went on to study pattern making and tailoring, then worked as a costume designer in Los Angeles before returning to Oregon and launching one of the first women’s snowboarding apparel brands in Bend, circa 1990. Her creative energy led to a successful wedding photography career spanning close to two decades before circling back to the clothing realm by a chance meeting with Charleton where their personalities as entrepreneurs and creatives were matched. By partnering with Rebecca to continue Lucky Lady, Michelle found a perfect melding for her creativity with her roots as a seamstress and fabricator. And taking the reins as full owner of Lucky Lady in 2020, she is poised to deliver the experience of wearing a custom-fit dress that delivers not only quality of craft, but the energy and power of a collaboration that results in an heirloom piece. “An heirloom dress is not just a custom-fitted piece handmade for your unique body and style, it is a piece you can rely on to bring a feeling of beauty and ease about yourself. The collaborative process in constructing an ‘heirloom’ is also about creating an experience of connection and of reverence,” she says. Creating a custom dress starts with the selection of a unique pattern measured to a woman’s figure. The next step is to choose a certified chemical-free, 100% premium cotton fabric for the dress and for the contrasted bodice lining that only the wearer will see, like a signature. The finished piece is delivered in several weeks so the new owner can feel vibrant and assured whether the dress is worn to lunch dates, a dinner out, or a trip to the farmer’s market. Lucky Lady dresses are also available ready to wear and the line includes the must-have accessory of 2020: a mask. The beauty and comfort of Lucky Lady masks are so popular, some days Michelle is sewing masks and dresses 12 hours a day but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “In this day and age of ‘fast clothes,’ everyone has the same things probably made in another country,” Michelle says. “I strive to create something a woman can depend on,” she adds. “There is energy and human connection made with a hand-sewn dress and Lucky Lady dresses are made to enhance this beautiful lifestyle we’re so fortunate to live,” says Michelle, “I’m so lucky!” LuckyLadyDresses.com, CowgirlCash.com

She and her fiancé Francois Schneyder were on a mission to find stones, and McDonald was seeking inspiration in the gold work and distinct designs of South American artisans. As a child, she spent hours sorting through beads in her uncle’s bead shop in Royal Oak, Michigan. Her passion for jewelry led her to pursue a college

degree in metalsmithing, but she graduated in the middle of a recession. She spent three years working at Nashelle Jewelry before finally turning to her own designs. The trip to South America spurred not only a business 20

but a new aesthetic and intention: to adorn women in stones and recycled metals so that they felt like “coyas,” or Incan queens. Today, Coya is her one-woman business. McDonald mines stones and then cuts, drills, sands and polishes using hand tools passed down to her by her grandmother Birdie. “Jewelry is in my blood,” Anna says. In Oregon, she mines mossy agate, obsidian, sunstone, opal, quartz, Oregon Holly Blue Chalcedony and Ellensburg agates. She travels to California for other favorites. Stones that she can’t personally mine are carefully researched and procured only after ensuring they are “highly sourced” in North American mines employing responsible processes that do not damage the environment with harsh chemicals or dynamite. Finding a stone and shaping a design around it is always a unique endeavor. Anna is attuned to the stone’s special property, which she then looks to harness. For instance, chrysoprase is a heart opener, and a favorite stone because Anna says looking into its green face is like peering into the ocean. She chooses to wear watermelon tourmaline every day because the pink and green stone is, “Eccentric and juicy, and balances the male and female energies, letting you relax and soften and lead in love,” she says.

craft. An experience in a women’s circle involving animal medicine cards inspired her to consider the roles of spirit animals, particularly birds of prey in Central Oregon. She hurried back to her studio and started sketching designs. Then, she cut out silhouettes of bald eagles from recycled metal, shaping the sprawling wings into necklaces. The results are statement pieces, which evoke the dramatic collar-like necklaces of an Egyptian queen. “I’m more of a dainty jewelry kind of girl,” Anna says, but when she feels the urge to create, she just “lets it flow.” Even these larger, bold necklaces are designed to be light-weight and comfortable to wear, like the rest of her jewelry. Anna also has a casting studio, which allows her to cast “trinkets” of nature. In one line, she cast tiny hemlock pine cones and then mass produced them for dangly earrings and necklace strands that look plucked from the forest floor of the High Desert. As her business grows with increasing online orders, she is looking to expand with behind-thescenes help, but the ethos of her company will remain the same: each Coya piece is “hand-crafted with intention and to perfection.” She’s not making fashion jewelry, she says, but beautiful and durable “modern day heirlooms” fit for a queen. Available at Root Adorned, Bend. @CoyaJewelry

GEMSTONE CARE TIPS TIP 1 The best way to clean gemstone jewelry is in a bowl of water with a few drops of mild dish detergent. Using a brush with soft bristles, gently scrub behind the stone where dust and grime can collect. Rinse and pat dry with a cloth. TIP 2 Remove jewelry before performing manual labor. TIP 3 Anna says Coya Jewelry is very easy to maintain. “You simply have to wear it,” she says. “The caressing of your skin against the precious metal will keep the luster, desired sheen and sparkle.” TIP 4 For an extra bit of polish, Anna recommends using a Sunshine® polishing cloth. These cloths remove tarnish from sterling silver, gold, brass, copper, glass other surfaces, leaving a deep, long-lasting luster.

Nothing quite says elegance, ease, intimacy and “welcome to my home” like gathering around a charcuterie board. In a time of simplifying and craving smaller gatherings with friends, there is an intimacy in sharing a board of delicious morsels whether on a picnic at a local lake or sitting in backyard around a fire. A charcuterie board is a place for play and creativity. The pleasure you take in creating the board will be felt by those who partake in the bounty. Everything can be sourced locally and lends itself to simpler times. Stroll through a local market for

the freshest local produce, artisan cheeses, organic cured meats and fresh bread from your favorite bakery. Anything flat will work as a board and helps create interest and serves as a conversation piece. Like building paint on a canvas, start with monochromatic wedge cheeses before nestling cured meats beside them. Bring in any ramekins of olives, honey or jams next. Fill in with seasonal fruit. Texture is added by the nuts and crackers or local bread. The crowning touch is found in the final details of herbs or edible flowers. A gift to your guests, charcuterie boards free up time to connect and enjoy your loved ones. @BoardsbyJenny, @Partyfor20

VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.
