CELEBRATING STRONG WOMEN AND GOOD WINE
“She creates. She travels. She dreams. She gathers. She lives well. She is Jaine.”

Jaine in a Bottle
ONE OF WASHINGTON’S GREATEST VINTNERS LAUNCHES A NEW LINE CELEBRATING STRONG WOMEN AND THE WINE THEY LOVE. Jaine from Mathews Winery is a highly curated collection that showcases only whites and rosés. The initial launch includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Rosé. There will also be a sparkling in the near future — a nod to the line’s namesake, who adored champagne. The collection is inspired by the savvy small business owner who helped build the winery. “The original Jaine was the family matriarch,” says Marketing Manager Leah Bobson. “Her name was Mary Jane, and she was a social, connected, positive person. She brought people together. She traveled the world. Her grandchildren, who help run the winery, remember her as someone who was fun, vibrant, loving, active, engaging, and smart.” Bobson says the line is intended to celebrate women like Jaine: “She creates. She travels. She dreams. She gathers. She lives well. She is Jaine.” Focusing solely on whites and rosés is a bold move -- and a somewhat rare one in the industry. “It may be one of the few, if not the only, brand in the state doing so,” Bobson says. “Its design is also focused around a lifestyle we want to portray, rather than solely about the wine itself. The wine is crafted from select vineyard sites located in the Yakima Valley and Royal Slope region of the Columbia Valley. Each bottle is made from hand-picked grapes thoughtfully produced using sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention.” “Jaine inspires us to celebrate life’s beautiful moments in the company of others,” says Bobson. “We hope these wines are around the little moments in someone’s life where everything is as it should be.” Mathews Winery continues to have women like Jaine at the helm of the business, such as Diane Otis.

“My mom... in large part, helped resurrect the Matthews brand, and continues to work every day making sure the operation is running smoothly,” says Bryan Otis. “The winery wouldn’t be where it is today without her.” Otis says the Jaine line is a result of “a combination of all sorts of wonderful things coming together at the right time: incredible vineyards, a world-class winemaking team that excels at white wines, and a bunch of my staff and friends who were eager to get involved with the brand. And a place in the market that this brand can live that isn’t already being done. I have to pinch myself with how easy this has all been, really.” He describes the wines as “light, crisp, and refreshing that will drink well at any time of day. They are great to pair with healthier, more plant-based meals and they have lower alcohol content.” Creating the line was a labor of love, Otis says; love of the region, love of the wine, and love of the lives it’s meant to celebrate. “I’ve spent the last three years tracking down the very best vineyards for white wines in Washington, and Jaine is the result,” he says. “It’s really a love letter to how great Washington State white wines and rosés can be. There is so much adventure ahead, and we are thrilled to finally have Jaine ready (to) share with others.” Jaine wines retail for $24 ($17 for Wine Club members). They are available at Mathews Winery Tasting Room + Farm in Woodinville and at specialty wine shops and independent restaurants. You can also peruse their selection online.

How did this New York native, Harvard grad, marketing guru, find his way to the PNW and decide to open this delicious cookie shop? As Michael says, “I simply love chocolate chip cookies. I appreciate them, enjoy them deeply, get my strength from them…I’m just a cookie monster” OK, partially true, and partially kidding. His real inspiration started with a cookie shop in NYC (where he lived several decades ago) combined with baking skills passed down from his mother. He decided to challenge himself to come up with the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. “Whenever I felt like baking I’d make chocolate chip cookies and experiment with the recipe. I’d take the cookies to work, share them with my friends and get their feedback. The next time I felt like baking I’d make the changes people asked for and take them to work again. As you can imagine I was a popular guy! Years later my kids became the key testers and the process continued. Eventually I ended up with two cookies – The Pinckney Original and Dark Chocolate Oatmeal - I knew I had something special and thought I should do something with it. Pinckney Cookie Cafe was the result.” Not only is Michael passionate about cookies, but he is equally committed to building Pinckney Cookie Café into a great company with a positive impact on his employees and the community. “We’ve been giving $5.00 for every order of a dozen cookies or more to charities providing Covid-19 relief and we’ve raised over $12,000! We’re continuing to give $5.00 per order of a dozen or more cookies but changing our focus from Covid-19 to emphasizing Racial Justice charities.” And who doesn’t want to eat the most delicious gourmet cookies, AND give back at the same time? YOU WON’T FIND ANY WHITE TABLE CLOTHES AT CENEX GAS STATION IN WALLA WALLA, BUT STEP INSIDE AND YOU WILL DISCOVER ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN THE STATE. You might still find a few pretentious foodies, but no pretention with décor, prices, or booked out reservations. Andrae's Kitchen, run by chef Andrae Bopp, serves up “…a blend of Cajun and Southern, with a heavy influence of smoke, spice and south of the border. Our onsite smoker pumps out some killer brisket and pulled pork.” The man behind it all, Andrae Bopp, has been passionate about food and wine his entire life. “I have always

venture that I have started. I also go with my gut feeling…a lot, and so far it has steered me down the right path. “ says Bopp, and what a path he’s had. Food was always at the center of his life and he has an extensive background to prove it. Graduating with top honors, from the French Culinary Institute located in New York City. Following graduation, Andrae worked and interned in some of the world’s finest restaurants; including Bouley, Danube, Balthazar and Le Bernardin, a Michelin Three Star restaurant. He went on to open his own restaurant in Boise, and accumulating accolades, honorable mentions, and awards. He became known throughout the Pacific Northwest for the numerous wine dinners with some of the industry’s top winemakers and his work with local farmers. With the plan of combining his love of food with his passion for wine, he made his move to Walla Walla. He began the process for opening up Andrae’s Kitchen, one of the first mobile Food Trucks in the Pacific Northwest, and soon after Andrae opened a permanent restaurant inside the Cenex Convenience Store and has been garnering National attention and awards since, including: Pacific Northwest Caterer of the Year (2012), Best Food Truck Restaurant in North America (2016), Best Gas Station Breakfast in America (2016). And has been featured in The New York Times, Travel and Leisure Magazine, USA Today, Food and Wine, Wine Enthusiast, Sunset and many other Regional and National publications. In 2019 Andrae’s Kitchen was featured on The Cooking Channels show Food Paradise, as he continues to push the envelope with his creative “Gas Station Cuisine”. For his most recent project he partnered with Minam Store Outfitters and began “Wine and Food on The River” trips, featuring gourmet dinners all paired up with Walla Walla Wineries, served each night at camp. “We have been doing these for 6 years and have grown to include the Salmon River, Hells Canyon and the Wallowa/Grande Ronde. We have all different price points, adrenalin levels and length of trips, so really something for everyone,” says Bopp.

ROAD TRIP
Ro a d Tr i p t o Wine Country ARTICLE CAITLIN AGNEW

Bellevue Lifestyle | October 2020
THE PANDEMIC MAY HAVE PAUSED MOST OF OUR TRAVEL PLANS, BUT THE REALITY IS WE ARE STILL ITCHING FOR A SENSE OF NORMALCY IN LIFE, AND SEEKING FRESH NEW EXPERIENCES, AND TRAVEL IS ONE AVENUE FOR THAT. When done right, travel can relieve stress, boost creativity, promote physical activity, and overall make us happier. People are increasingly looking at car trips for their vacation plans, and road tripping might be our safest option if we want to venture away from home. Bellevue Lifestyle decided to jump on the trend, and road trip across the state to the unofficial capital of Washington wine country, Walla Walla. Recently named America’s Best Wine Region in the 2020 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice awards, which marks the first time it has earned first place. “It’s a testament to the outstanding terroir, meticulous craftsmanship, and to the men and women who are committed to elevating the Walla Walla Valley from both a wine production and tourism perspective.” said Robert Hansen, executive director of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance. We had the pleasure of staying at the Marcus Whitman Hotel, a landmark of downtown Walla Walla for nearly a century. Reigned as Walla Walla’s premier hotel, it features a state-of-the-art conference center, on-site wine tasting rooms, The Vineyard Lounge, and The Marc Restaurant, home to the region’s most extensive and award-winning wine list. The Marc recently received an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for the “thoughtfully chosen wine lists that offer quality and diversity, as well as compatibility with the restaurant’s style and menu.” The Marcus Whitman, wineries and restaurants we visited kindly implemented and enforced social and physical distancing policies. Walla Walla recently created a “Peace of Mind Pledge”, as a way to provide travelers with the Peace of Mind needed to visit safely and confidently. Local businesses are encouraged to voluntarily adopt the Pledge as a demonstration of their commitment to the health and well-being of visitors and residents alike. For more information about the pledge, and for the most up to date travel information, visit wallawalla.org

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)
Walla Walla is home to more than 120 wineries, and a nationally recognized culinary scene. If you plan on doing a couple tastings, we recommend booking a driver with Tesla Winery Tours, and enjoy being chauffeured through Walla Walla wine region in the comfort of a Tesla Model X 90D. Here are a few recommendations not to miss during your visit.
+ Va l d e m a r E s t a t e s There may be no clearer sign that Walla Walla has become a truly world-class wine region than the opening of Valdemar Estates. Born more than 125 years ago in an underground cellar in Oyón, Spain, the wines of family-owned Bodegas Valdemar are beloved in their native country. Now Bodegas Valdemar Estates has made its first foray into the U.S. with Valdemar Estates. Its new winery and tasting room, which opened in April, marks the first time a non-American winery has come to the region.
+Revelr y Vintners Founded in 2005 by Jared Burns, with the goal of producing three wines from Washington, reflecting Jared’s love for Columbia Valley wines. Revelry Vintners today offers a complete lineup of wines, each a pure representation of their origins in the Columbia Valley. Enjoy a tasting at their beautiful winery, which was honored for design excellence by the American Institute of Architects.
+Abeja Winer y Spanish for bee, the name Abeja (pronounced ‘ah-BAY-ha’) was chosen to honor a deeply-rooted respect for the environment. Founders Ken and Ginger Harrison came to Walla Walla Valley in the late 1990s in search of land suitable for planting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, and while doing so they discovered an extraordinary historic farmstead that they have turned into a gorgeous B&B. The Inn at Abeja and Abeja winery are excitedly progressing towards the shared goal of becoming a sustainable winery and world-class Inn.

+Isenhower Cellars Founded in 1999 by Denise and Brett Isenhower, Isenhower Cellars produces sustainable wines through low-input farming, traditional wine-producing methods, native yeast fermentation, and more. Its varietals include Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Roussane.
+Long Shadows Vintners Founded in 2003 by visionary Allen Shoup, the Long Shadows proposition was as simple as it was complex: recruit a cadre of the finest winemakers in the world; give each vintner access to Washington State’s best grapes; and outfit a winery to accommodate a diverse group of winemakers’ exacting cellar specifications. Long Shadows collectively has won numerous awards, including recognition as Food & Wine magazine’s “Winery of the Year.”
+Amavi Cellars A small family-owned, certified sustainable winery. Sweeping decks on both the east and north sides of the facility are ideal places to sit, sip, and get lost in the awe of Walla Walla wine country. Winemaker Jean-Francois Pellet is a third-generation winemaker and grape grower.
+ Wa l l a Wa l l a Steak Co If you need a break from wine, this is your stop for a tasty cocktail or beer. Walla Walla Steak Co. is locally owned and deeply-rooted hometown steak house featuring award-winning food, served with warm and welcoming style.
