Style are very different. Style is much more than pretty things — though we’re so grateful for all the pretty things. Style is feeling beautiful in your own skin, knowing that those wrinkles and other imperfections are part of your story, and learning how to feel confident being “Imperfectly Perfect,” as Highlands Ranch photographer Elle Blom reminds her clients when sitting for her portrait sessions. Style is also going out of your way to make every person you meet feel valued and respected, in your business, in your classroom, in your church, in your

AROUND TOWN Tennessee, in August. Vibe is a local family-operated startup, owned by Lone Tree residents Mark and Shannon Weston, with a mission to bring healthy superfoods to our local community. All menu items are gluten- and dairy-free with no processed sugars, super clean and most importantly, delicious. Memphis might seem like an odd choice for a second location; however, the owners' son plays college football there so they have been traveling to Memphis quite a bit and fell in love with the city. They noticed there is a definite lack of healthy food options, as well as a lack of awareness of the affect of food choices on health. They decided to take a chance and open a

FROM THE OUTSIDE, THIS WEATHERED AND CREAKY TWOSTORY MINER’S CABIN DOESN’T LOOK LIKE MUCH. But the inside of what is known as The Library is a book lover’s paradise, with its hundreds of diverse titles lining the wrap-around shelves and overstuffed seating, animal skin rugs and wood fireplace — an invitation to vacationing guests to curl up and read a while.

The Library, a restored cabin that was given as wedding gift from Dunton Hot Springs owner to his wife

This bounty of pages shouldn’t be here, in the middle-of-nowhere Colorado forest. But just like The Saloon a short walk away offering chef-driven mountain cuisine and crisp G&Ts for happy hour, I’m so glad that it does. We’re here for an extended weekend at Dunton Hot Springs, a boutique luxury mountain resort about 25 miles southwest of Telluride, which sits along the West Fork of the Dolores River. It’s a collection of about two dozen 1880’s miners cabins, once strewn throughout the valley but moved on-site and refurbished into high-end accommodations. There’s an open-air chapel, yoga studio and spa house for massages and other treatments. Some of the cabins feature hot-spring-fed soaking tubs. As a book lover, I’m drawn to The Library (a wedding gift from the owner to his wife many years ago), but that’s not the main attraction here.

FAMED FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER PETER LINDBERGH ONCE SAID, “THERE’S SOMETHING ELSE THAT MAKES A WOMAN INTERESTING, SOMETHING BEYOND BEING YOUNG OR BEING OLD. And I’m going to find out what that something else is.” Inspired by his work, Highlands Ranch resident Elle Blom of Elle Photography strives to depict her subjects not only as interesting, but as the complex and beautiful women they are. Growing up in South Africa, she was fascinated with photos of relatives in photo albums and on the walls of her childhood home. Elle studied photography as part of her graphic design degree 20 years ago, mastering pre-digital foundational skills such as shooting on film, dark room development and studio techniques. After university and an 8 year stint in London, a work transfer brought her

EQUITY EXPERT AND EDUCATION PROFESSOR, DR. ROSEMARIE ALLEN OF LONE TREE, SHARES THOUGHTS ON BUILDING INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

26

Highlands Ranch Lifestyle | September 2020

ARTICLE SONJA NIX

DR. ROSEMARIE ALLEN IS A 21-YEAR LONE TREE RESIDENT, FOUNDER AND CEO OF THE CONSULTING FIRMS THE CENTER OF EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE AND INSTITUTE FOR RACIAL EQUITY & EXCELLENCE, AS WELL AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AT METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY. A nationally renowned expert on implicit bias and culturally responsive practices, Dr. Allen has also written two children’s books to help students and teachers better appreciate the experiences of young Black children. She recently gave a presentation titled “Building Inclusive Communities” sponsored by Arapahoe Libraries and attended by many residents of the South Metro area. Highlands Ranch Lifestyle Magazine caught up with Dr. Allen recently to talk about race in our community. Find out more at Rosemarieallen.com. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I was raised in Los Angeles, California. As a curious and very active child, teachers didn’t know what to do with me and I was suspended multiple times. I decided to become a teacher, so that other children would not feel as misunderstood as I felt. After graduation, I worked with young children, and moved to Colorado in 1994. I grew into leadership positions and eventually became the Director of the Division of Child Care at the Colorado Department of Human Services overseeing more than 9,000 child care facilities, adoption agencies, and foster care homes. Motivated and profoundly impacted by the racial inequities in our education system that I experienced myself and observed, I earned a doctorate in Equity and Leadership in Education at the University of Colorado, Denver. As an associate professor, I now work with future teachers to teach the tools to address inequities in their classrooms.
