The Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes: client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Why We Love Fashion

RIGHT ABOUT NOW WE’D BE BUYING, OR AT LEAST OGLING, THE SUMPTUOUS STYLES AND HUMBLE IMITATIONS OF FEBRUARY’S MILAN’S FASHION WEEK. Instead, we watched in horror as coronavirus shut down the Italian runways, and then the country itself! For everyone who loves fashion, it broke our hearts then and it breaks them now, to watch first the cancellation of successive “seasons” of runway collections, then the frustration of designers, then the consolidation of the garment industry and the stores who ultimately profit from their inspiration. On Main St., our own frustration has pivoted from, “I don’t have a thing to wear,” to “I don’t have anywhere to wear it!” Interestingly, this collective frustration may all lead to a clearer perception of why we value fashion in our lives and how we consume it – and the industry is getting the message! Luke Leitch writes in the June-July Vogue: “As we emerge from our current crisis, the very notion of luxury will surely be transformed. Instead of signifying something that is gorgeous but ultimately unnecessary, it will likely come to signify something for which you are thankful – something that represents an act of contribution rather than one of consumption.” He speaks of a fashion industry focusing more on localism, collectivism (dare we call it “com-

Lest you think we’re looking to smash your fashion icons like so many confederate statues, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. We take this pause as an opportunity to think about how we can reclaim and re-fashion all those looks we’ve adored for decades, right down to the much-loved jewelry we’ve hidden away. We hope this month’s issue will inspire you to spend some time personalizing your own style and then wearing it confidently whenever you have the opportunity – even if it’s just a designer face mask. *With thanks to Vogue for decades of inspiration, Nostalgia for the little black dress, and CityofAngelsPPE.com for the rocking designer mask.

Sta n d Ta l l ! PAIN-FREE, 'PERFECT' POSTURE IS POSSIBLE IF YOU PUT THE BASICS FIRST
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MELINDA GIPSON
BACK AND NECK PAIN MAY BE WHAT LEADS YOU TO BASICS FIRST CHIROPRACTIC, BUT IT’S THE FREEDOM FROM STRESS AND WELLNESS GUIDANCE THAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK. As Dr. Susmita (“Misty”) Paul, says, “ultimately, we’re trying to diminish the effects of degeneration – we’re working on anti-aging here.” We haven’t found anyone who can turn back the clock on that process entirely, but the effects of stress and poor posture can age you more rapidly than you might imagine. If stress tenses your neck and jaw, reduced blood-flow to your brain can cause headaches and many other kinds of pain that, over time, become much harder to correct. Hunched shoulders – crafted from curling yourself around a keyboard for hours on end – prevent you from breathing deeply and supplying the oxygen your brain needs to think and your muscles need to relax. “Taking that good, deep breath each time we inhale is vital to wellness, so ultimately, most of my patients are working on their posture while we’re working to eliminate their pain,” Misty says. Basics First assesses every patient for not only their medical complaints, but with a posture and orthopedic examination. “We look at you from the top down and the bottom up,” Misty explains. Pain tells you what’s out of alignment as well as which muscles may be overstressed. Chiropractic adjustment – aligning your joints – helps, but in concert with helping tight muscles that are pulling on those joints to relax. “If muscles won’t permit Drs. Misty Paul and partner, Catherine Toplansky, Demonstrate That Perfect Posture is Possible
good alignment, then we provide therapy such as electric muscle stimulation or ultrasound. Then, once people feel better, they want to know how to stay healthy, which is where good nutrition and supplementation if necessary comes into play.”

“WE HAD THE VISION TO TAKE OUR CLOTHING MINISTRY FROM BEING EVENT-BASED TO SOMETHING WHERE WE COULD OFFER CLOTHING YEARROUND TO THOSE WHO NEED I T.”
All Sizes, New or Gently Worn
IT’S NOT EVERY DAY THAT A RIBBON CUTTING FOR A NEW CLOTHING STORE OPENS IN PRAYER, BUT THE CLOTHING CLOSET IN DOWNTOWN PURCELLVILLE IS NO ORDINARY STORE. Like most second-hand clothing stores, it features new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and kids at affordable prices. Because The Clothing Closet is one of a number of missions anchored in The Tree of Life Ministries (http://tolministries.org), it also offers free clothing to the needy based on a voucher program, and hopes to provide employment and volunteer experience to the marginalized, such as the elderly or special needs adults, says Paul Smith, executive director, Tree of Life Ministries. Susannah D. Lee, TOL regional director for Purcellville, sees the store as an outreach of the ministries’ shelter branch which has organized large annual clothing giveaways in the spring and fall for a dozen years. They’ve been so popular, or so needful, that as many as 800 people have been served at any one event. When the space became available in the historic Pancoast Building, the owners gave TOL first dibs on the storefront. “We had the vision to take our clothing ministry from being event-based to something where we could offer clothing year-round to those who need it,” Susannah said. Purchases from the general public help to fund the ministry. CONTINUED >

Men Shop Too
Cara McDuffie and Kimberlie Grueso Relish Their Finds
To shop for free, all a family needs to do is call the store or TOL directly and apply for a voucher. There’s a short questionnaire about how many people are in the family and what their other needs might be, in part so the store’s team can keep an eye out for everyone’s appropriate sizes for their next seasonal visit. Then the family is scheduled for a shopping appointment when they have the store to themselves and can be fully outfitted for their needs by store manager Diane McDuffie or another store associate. Lou Lou Boutiques supports the Closet with remnant merchandise though, “it’s not a consignment store,” Susannah explains. You wouldn’t know it from the outpouring of support the store received in donations in the month of June, which literally filled the racks with quality merchandise. “Our goal is to help those in need through the love of Jesus Christ. That’s our mission and we are so happy to be open,” Susannah says. It’s a dream a dozen years in the making, she adds.
TOL Chaplain Wayne Ruckman Opens in Prayer
Shop Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 119 N 21st St. in Purcellville. See tolministries.org/ theclothingcloset.html for more detail or visit them on Facebook as TOLtheclothingcloset.

A sketch of Dan and Tammi Ketterman’s wedding photograph from May, 1981, surrounded by more sketches of their children, form a watchful centerpiece over the engagement ring salon in the newly renovated store. It bears the motto, “It all started with a diamond.” 22

Art Deco design is both trendy and nostalgic
ARTICLE MELINDA GIPSON PHOTOGRAPHY CELESTE LINTHICUM
Katelyn Ketterman Cockerill (Katie) says, “My mom has just started to collect photos of her grandkids,” so look for the sketches eventually to ring the back wall. Customers try to place the children’s faces with their grown-up counterparts. It’s tough because everyone who works at Ketterman’s feels and is treated like family. “We’re like brothers and sisters sometimes. It’s just an atmosphere that’s a bit different from the corporate world.” It’s within this embrace that Katie enjoys working with a team that crafts custom jewelry. We would say “designers,” but that’s not really what customization means to them. “Mostly what we do here is take customers’ pieces and redesign them into something that they’ll enjoy. They may inherit something from a family member with sentimental attachment, but they don’t love what it looks like. Based on what it is and what it’s made of, we try to turn it into something they’ll wear and enjoy for another generation.” + Scenario one: A young woman comes in with a marquis-cut diamond ring from the sixties and wants something less dated. “Depending on the age or wear of the item we might just take the center stone or the whole piece and turn it into a necklace.” + Scenario two: A woman whose husband has died wants to integrate his band into hers. “If she’s ready not to wear it as a ring anymore, we might put her ring inside of his and she might wear it as a pendant. Then she can then still have it close to her,” Katie explains.

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED) Stacked bracelets still fashion forward
Simple yet elegant
Romancing the Stone
Delicate designs require delicate handling.
Because she has reworked so many engagement rings (including her own), Katie encourages young men who are buying one to “invest in the diamond because that’s the part that’s going to last. That’s what is supposed to represent forever, and it can hold up to generations of enjoyment.” The store has held design competitions among its jewelers with the winner being able to select a charity of his own choosing for a donation. They’ve even produced outsiders’ designs for charity, like the bracelet bearing the inscription “91>19” (Psalm 91 is greater than COVID-19) for http://jewelersforchildren.org. Such projects are fun, Katie says, but it’s more often the case that Katie’s years of experience and craftsmanship forge a collaboration with a customer’s idea of what a particular piece could become. “If I were to design something personally, it would be very symmetrical, every piece in line. When I’m asked by customers to do something more freestyle and creative, we have to step into their mindset.” That’s not to say they can’t “break the mold” so to speak. One jewelers’ bench boasts a CAD/CAM machine with jeweler’s software that can create a 3-D printing of each custom piece and the wax mold that will be used in creating it. If someone wants an original ring, for example, they can then try it on and refine design elements that might have seemed like a good idea but prove unwearable in practice. The technology carries with it a price; but for a special occasion or to bring out the beauty of particular gemstones, seeing your vision become reality can be worth it.
Jewelry Care Tips TAKE IT OFF. The gym isn't the place to show off your bling. Lifting or gripping tightly can bend your rings and bracelets and necklaces can catch and break on equipment. Don't expose your jewelry to stresses of cleaning, chlorine or heavy lifting. Chemicals in cleaning products and in pools or spas can permanently damage gold. Chemical damage also leaves mountings susceptible to breaking down and putting your gems at risk. CHOOSE WISELY. Select jewelry that suits your lifestyle and your needs. Consider the level of wear you intend for your pieces and work with a jeweler to meet those needs. Smaller diamonds have smaller prongs and require more upkeep. Certain gems are more delicate and require special care. Fashion jewelry made of non-precious metal is made to last a fashion season, not a lifetime. INSURE IT. WEAR IT. ENJOY IT. Gems don't sparkle in the dark, so let them out of the jewelry box often -- don't wait for a special occasion. If you have items you don't wear, talk to your jeweler about having them reworked or redesigned into something you will enjoy.
The design team takes each customer through every phase of the creative process, but at the end of the day,
BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR JEWELER. Have your jewelry

Most art bought locally is purchased to go with a chair in The Home Store or Pier One, and will be worthless the moment it leaves the store, he laments. “Whereas, my hope is that when people buy local art, there’s a provenance or a story that goes along with it that they can tell their children and grandchildren, and it will mean something to the family as they hold onto that piece for generations.” Jim’s own work ranges from the very figurative – cityscapes with people and lots of geometrical lines and angles – to heroic scale paintings celebrating macabre figures from Dia De Los Muertos, to abstract mixed media. As if to prove his point, he says, “It’s very difficult to talk or write about visual art because it’s a visual medium.” *TRYST Gallery is still open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and currently features work by Alona Isakova. PHOTOGRAPHER, POTTER, PUBLISHER Sometimes life hands you a break. After working with Life Magazine for nearly five years, Richard Busch decided it was time to hang out his own shingle as a photojournalist, then hopped into a car and headed to Woodstock. A little more than 50 years later, he has compiled his photos into a book called Woodstock Nation.
Richard Busch Richard Busch with his current project Ambiguity
While editor of National Geographic Traveler magazine, he took a pottery class and found he loved ceramics so much that he just might want to craft pottery for a living after he retired. Glenfiddich Farm Pottery was born in his basement studio in 1998. Now, after attaining mastery in ceramics, he finds himself returning to his “first love,” photography. “I’ve been looking back on my work over the last 50 years and am finding pictures that have a coherence in theme and putting them together in books,” Richard says. What for him constitutes a great way of organization has been rewarded by six of his seven books being selected for the library of the Museum of Modern Art and 19 of his Manhattan prints being chosen by the Museum of the City of New York. His current project, ripe for these times of living in a land of masked strangers, is called Ambiguity. Each photo poses a question: “It’s the mystery, the uncertainty, the puzzle, the ambiguity” that draws you in and won’t let you go. “There are no answers so the viewer can only speculate,” Richard says. Richard details why this 1969 photo of Eric Clapton is one of his favorites
Richard points out a barley impression in one of his plates in his Hamilton home studio.

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)
“I don’t paint by a lot of rules,” says artist Marthe McGrath; “In fact, I’ve been called fearless.” That she mentions rules at all probably harkens to her childhood when her grandfather was the curator of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She took art classes at the Corcoran and enjoyed painting at an early age, but then only took it up as a profession in retirement. She paints large, expressive works in bright colors with “an intuitive and joyful process.... Quiet things just aren’t my passion.” Her inspirations are drawn from her travel to many exotic places like India, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Marrakesh and Havana, all of which she calls very colorful places. A trip to Venice last year had her painting on loose canvas in a 15th Century piazza – which a trained eye might spot in one of the works depicted below. Rather than being representational, her Vivid Venice Series is meant to evoke the lifeblood of the ancient city on the sea. Rock and roll is admittedly another key influence in her work, though Magic and Loss, the title of a Lou Reed album, is really just meant to evoke a feeling. Locals may recognize it from a series she showed in Leesburg recently called “Rhythm and Hues.” “For me,” she said, “painting is transformative. It mesmerizes me, creating an energy I like to think shows in my work.” See her website at http://www.m2artist, or call for an appointment at the http://www.restonartgallery.com Marte McGrathy by Charlotte Geary www.charlottegeary.com

Silas Redd tries to explain why he loves vintage
WHETHER YOU SEEK SUSTAINABILITY, CRAFTSMANSHIP OR SIMPLY STYLE, SHOPPING VINTAGE REWARDS THE SOUL IF YOU’RE THE SORT OF WOMAN WHO BINGEWATCHED THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL IN PART FOR THE CLOTHES AND THE ERA THEY EVOKED, YOU COULD BE SILAS REDD’S PRIME CUSTOMER. The owner of Nostalgia, a vintage clothing shop in the heart of Purcellville, Silas actually supplied Amazon Prime costumers with dresses and accessories for the award-winning show’s season three, and has aided HBO and Netflix costumers with their period pieces as well. 38

Nostalgia accessories abound
But there a many more reasons to “shop vintage.” Going back to the past is a fantastic way to find your future style. At Nostalgia, you can create unique looks from authentic clothing dating all the way back to the 1920s and up to the early 1980s. Seeing this extraordinary selection of the most iconic looks of so many eras – filling two floors of the stately historic home -- is just part of the experience. It’s clear in every room that Silas celebrates both the artistry and craftsmanship of vintage clothing and the confident women who adore it. Silas was inspired to work in the world of fashion by his late great grandmother Georgia, an accomplished seamstress who designed clothes for many, but could never afford to become a professional designer. It was she who first introduced him to his first issue of Vogue, Silas remembers almost reverently. Nostalgia began merely as his senior thesis project at Virginia Commonwealth University where he studied fashion merchandising. When his professors and mentors took a look at the collections he put together as his “hobby,” they encouraged him to run with it and turn the idea into an actual store. In 2016, the concept finally became a reality. “The name Nostalgia comes from that feeling that people get when they look at the clothing,” Silas says. “It evokes certain memories from their past: the fabrics, the quality, the pattern, the prints, and the little details in vintage clothing that are unheard of now” – not to mention the women themselves who used to dress for dinner, even in their own homes. A smattering of antiques and china, also for sale, help add to the overall nostalgic atmosphere of the boutique. Silas’ regulars typically fall into two categories. “We get older clientele who are more professional and want to wear something different than typical brands to work. These clients usually have a better understanding of vintage clothing. Then we have a younger clientele who strive to differ from their peers’ fashion styles and obtain more sustainable fashion than what is being sold in big name-brand stores. They view their purchase as giving that article of clothing a second life.” More recently, the store has gained a wider following from a slew of social media posts urging patrons to support local black-owned businesses. When asked whether being so categorized “mattered” to him, Silas affirmed, “It matters to me because I am the only black owned business in Purcellville that has a brick-and-mortar store... but I don’t want people to shop here just because this is a black-owned business. I want my customers to come into this store and say that he had a great selection, his customer service was top notch, and that is why I will return. That is what matters to me.” All that and more matters to us too, so we heartily hope you’ll check out the boutique at 142 E Main St. in Purcellville, but check hours first at http://www.shopnostalgia.com, or on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/shopatnostalgia/. You can also see some of the collection at http://www.etsy.com/shop/shopnostalgiavintage, or @shopatnostalgia on Instagram.
