Right here, living or working in our town, we have thousands of women fulfilling their personal calling. It takes a village to raise a child, and our village has women who are our children's teachers, doctors, first responders, law enforcement officers, authors, entertainers, nurses, social workers, counselors and so much more. YOUR H AV E N THESE ARE DIFFICULT TIMES AND HOME HAS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.

IF THERE’S SOMETHING I’VE LEARNED IN MY YEARS IN INTERIOR DESIGN, IT’S THAT HOME MATTERS. We all say it, but then we’re hardly ever there, or we neglect our living spaces until we hate being in our homes. This “sheltering-at-home” time has reminded me again that home is the center of our lives. Even if you live by yourself, your home should nurture, protect, feed your soul, provide rest and respite from the outside world, and inspire you. Sound like a lot? Your home can do all of these things for you if you put some time, thought, resources, and even some advice from a professional into it. Making your home more beautiful and functional with the right floor plan, furnishings, color scheme, correctly placed artwork and accessories, and window treatments can be the finishing touches that make you sigh with relief when you come through the door.

SELF-CARE TIPS FOR MOTHERS + CLEAN OUT, CLEAN UP: The first step in creating the home atmosphere you want is getting rid of everything you don’t want or need. Start cleaning out today, and be merciless. You will feel empowered and encouraged. + DETERMINE HOW YOU LIVE: Is it just you and the kids and pets at home every day? Your furniture, paint scheme, floor plans, and accents should all enhance, as well as declare your lifestyle story. + DON’T FORGET THE DETAILS: Window treatments are top priority in providing privacy and comfort but are especially powerful in turning your house into your haven. Rugs, lighting, art, and accessories are also essential, but here let this be your standard: Fewer things, better quality.

MY F I R S T

NEW EXPERIENCES AND BEGINNINGS FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

GABBY GAINES M Y F I R S T. . . Y E A R T E A C H I N G WHEN DID YOU REALIZE BECOMING A TEACHER WAS THE RIGHT CAREER PATH FOR YOU? My Dad is my biggest inspiration in all of this. He was a teacher, and I vividly remember being a little girl and going to school with him. His kids loved him, and I saw how big of a difference he was able to make in their lives. I’ve always loved kids, and in the back of my mind knew that I wanted to be a teacher. As everyone is, I was scared of failure and that I wouldn’t be enough or able to teach the kids what they needed to learn to be successful. I remember sitting in my very first education class, feeling at peace. I knew this is where I was supposed to be. From there, I observed in many classrooms and then moved onto student teaching. I love helping kids learn and making them feel confident in their future and themselves. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TEACHING 1ST GRADERS? They’re so incredibly smart and blow me away every single day with their imaginations. I love teaching them and being their safe place they can come to daily. Their energy and excitement to learn is contagious, and they bring so much positivity and light into the classroom. Elementary kiddos are my happy place! I wouldn’t trade this job for the world.

S H AY L A B R A D L E Y M Y F I R S T. . . Y E A R A S A N U R S E WHAT MAKES YOUR JOB SPECIAL? There are so many things that make this job special. For me, the most extraordinary thing about this job is that I get to make a difference in someone’s life. As nurses, we see people at their most vulnerable state, and I think I probably speak for a lot of nurses when I say that it is a privilege to make someone’s hardest days a little more bearable. We also get to share in patient’s victories, big and small. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ASPIRING NURSE? #1: Don’t give up!! The most challenging part of being a nurse is becoming one. #2: Care for everyone to the best of your ability. Not everyone will like you, but you should always be able to say that you did your best. #3: Be flexible. Healthcare changes all the time. Go with the flow, and try to do it with a good attitude. #4: Never forget why you wanted to become a nurse in the first place. You may need to be reminded sometimes.

BREE HALE M Y F I R S T. . . Y E A R A S A C H E F WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ASPIRING FEMALE CHEF? Don’t lose your passion. There will be bad days, and there will be good days, but ALWAYS let your good days outweigh your bad. Also, never stop learning. There is something new to learn in the culinary world every day and someone who has a different flavor palette than ourselves. Be willing to try new things and willing to fail in order to get better. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB, AND WHAT IS MOST CHALLENGING? The long days and sacrifices are the most challenging because I had to give up a lot to get to where I am today. When you’re trying to juggle a job along with jump-starting your own business, “life” doesn’t go as planned. You have to give up a lot of family time, hanging with friends, and sleep, but the people you meet along the way have been the best part of the job. I wouldn’t be who I am today without each individual that I’ve crossed paths within the culinary world. When you don’t get to spend as much time with your family and friends as you’d like, having an “add-on” family makes it so much better.

AMBER DAUGHTRE Y M Y F I R S T. . . Y E A R A S A N E N G I N E E R ENGINEERING HAS BEEN CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING FIELDS TO STUDY… WHAT WAS IT LIKE GOING THROUGH SCHOOL? That’s actually one of the reasons why I chose to pursue it. Going through engineering school was far from easy. However, I have learned that the more difficult the experience is, the more rewarding the accomplishment will be. I truly believe because I realized this early on and because my mind was set on the goal rather than the path, enduring engineering school was worth the late-night studying and many times of frustration. My perseverance to push through tedious concepts and theories not only grew me educationally but increased my ability to problem solve in every area of my life. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A WOMAN GOING INTO THIS FIELD? My advice to a woman going into this field or any endeavor is to find someone that is where you want to be professionally, then seek guidance from them. Success is based on merit. Those who desire to excel in any endeavor cannot let something as simple as the status quo cause them to deviate from their modus operandi.

E M I LY K AT E B O R I N G M Y F I R S T. . . Y E A R A S A P H O T O G R A P H E R WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? The most rewarding aspect of photography as a profession is the ability to witness and serve people in many of the greatest moments of their lives. I get to cry with two people promising their lives, welcome parent’s newborns into their home, as well as celebrate Senior’s academic achievements. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ASPIRING FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER WANTING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THIS? To aspiring photographers and women pursuing their dreams, you need to do it. Whether it’s 100% or after your workday, you should never live your life each day not pursuing the things you love and feel passionate about pursuing. Put your entire heart and mind into your life, and you will never regret it.

DR. JUNE SCOBEE RODGERS TURNS TRAGEDY INTO TRIUMPH

AS WE CELEBRATE WOMEN DURING THE MONTH OF MAY, THE STORY OF DR. JUNE SCOBEE RODGERS IS AN ILLUSTRATION OF HOW WOMEN CAN INSPIRE THEIR FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, AND FAMILIES TO TAKE THAT EXTRA STEP TO LIVE THEIR LIVES WITH AN EXTRA SPARK. June Scobee Rodgers, widow of Challenger Space Shuttle Commander Richard “Dick” Scobee, “turned tragedy into triumph” after the 1986 Challenger accident. Immediately following the tragedy, June channeled grief into action and led the Challenger families, along with others, to create a living tribute to their loved ones June’s captivating spirit and love for her family and friends are motivators for everyone she meets. She grew up in childhood poverty, homelessness, and family dysfunction that would have lead most into despair. But not June. Instead, as a young child, June became inspired after reading a copy of “Think and Grow Rich” by Norman Vincent Peale. As a result, she developed her own plan using the ABC’s as a guide for positive thinking. “A” was for Attitude – Accepting problems as challenges. “B” was for “Believe in myself and God,” and “C” was for Commitment. Have the courage to create a positive out of a negative. Years later, she added “D” for Dreams are your vision. June will unabashedly tell you the day at age sixteen she met Dick Scobee, a handsome airman who wanted to be a pilot, was the day that changed her life forever. They enjoyed 26 years of love and life until the heartbreaking day in January 1986 when the Challenger accident took place, marking the first ever American astronauts lost in space flight. During the Challenger launch preparations, June had the opportunity to work with fellow educator Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space. After the accident, June was committed to continuing McAuliffe’s

Chattanooga Lifestyle | May 2020

FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS, THE DESIGNERS AT CLASSIC CABINETRY HAVE OFFERED EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE TO CLIENTS TO CREATE SPACES THAT ARE PERSONAL, PLEASING, COMFORTABLE, FUNCTIONAL, AND WELL … CLASSIC! Our number one goal is to assist our clients in achieving their dream with multiple cabinetry options, which entail function, features, finishes, and product lines with varying price ranges. We have a wide selection of cabinetry lines with price points from affordable to luxurious to fit every budget and lifestyle. While we gladly design for cabinetry and closet/pantry storage for any room in the home, we understand fully that the real living room of the home is the kitchen! THE PROJECT: The challenge with any renovation is the unknown. In one situation, our clients acquired a home and began the demo the day they closed the on the purchase. Realizing the client's firm grasp on their design aesthetic required the space to be open, clean, bright, and natural, the finished products had to reflect their vision. Understanding the new owners’ hope to move into their new haven as quickly as possible, we had to immediately envision a design starting the moment the home went under contract. Under limited time constraints, best guess assumptions were made regarding which walls could be removed without affecting the structural integrity of the house, speculating what was behind the existing appliance wall, and questioning if additional electrical and plumbing could be included in new locations. To maximize every space, specialized storage including drawers, rollout trays, built-in double trash pullout, stacked wall cabinets made the best use of the area. Decorative details were then added to maintain the vintage vibe such as an arched valance toe kick in wet bar, mullion doors with plain glass in upper wall cabinets, turned legs, and furniture style base molding at the island. A custom-built hood with straight lines and minimal adornment was added to the simple aesthetic as well as the unique placement of appliances allowing enhancement of the existing brick structure of the home. To enhance the flow, additional seating was included at the island for four while utilizing the rest of the island space for storage. Other touches using

I graduated from Girls Preparatory School in 2011, then attended Auburn University and later graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2015. I jumped into real estate after graduation working at REMAX for three years before moving to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices J Douglas Properties and starting The Weathers Team in 2019. I am an active member of The Junior League of Chattanooga and a member of the Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute. My favorite part of having an all-female real estate team is empowering women in their careers. As the team leader, I take pleasure in mentoring the newer members of the team and helping them acclimate to the critical business of buying or selling a home. The Weathers Team is a family, and our clients’ happiness directly translates to our success. My advice to an aspiring female real estate agent? Be the hardest working woman in the room. JENNI SANDERS I have lived in Chattanooga for the majority of my life and continue to love the city more every day! I recently graduated from The University of Tennessee Chattanooga with my bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing. I was able to become a licensed real estate agent within three months of graduating. Being a part of an all-female team has been such a great and rewarding experience. Mary Catherine is the perfect example of a powerful and independent businesswoman and learning from her has been a privilege. I can confidently say I’m a part of a team that cares about each other, motivates one another, and supports every member through their career and personal life!

TAY L O R K E E F Originally from Fort Payne, I moved to Chattanooga five years ago. My favorite part of being on an all-female team is that we connect on so many different levels, and the team culture is immense. I am the Transaction Coordinator and Marketing Director for the Weathers team and also

4

Mary-Catherine’s Executive Assistant. My job on the team is a bit different than the other girls who are selling real estate. My advice to any young female pursuing a professional career is never to give up, always strive to be the best version of yourself, and to listen more than you talk. We’ve also been facing a challenging time in real estate while practicing social distancing and making sure our clients’ health is placed above all else. As a team, we have utilized our technology we are so fortunate to have by offering virtual house showings, live video open houses, and video consultations! The Weathers Team has taken full advantage of the social distancing period and been meeting as a team through zoom, educating ourselves through conference calls with other professionals, and still functioning as a full-time real estate team despite the circumstances! Jumping into a career in real estate can be very overwhelming, so having a support system to educate yourself on the industry entirely is crucial, and I found that and more in The Weathers Team! HOW TO MAKE TRIPLE BERRY CRUMB BARS: Start with a near bushel of fresh berries – you’ll need 1 pint blueberries plus 6oz each blackberries and raspberries. Add the berries to a bowl then gently stir together with 1/2 cup white sugar and 1 heaping Tablespoon gluten-free flour. Set the berries aside. In a large bowl, stir together 1/2 cup each white and brown sugar, 1 teaspoon each baking powder and cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 3 cups gluten-free flour. Again, I used King Arthur Gluten-Free Measure for Measure flour but no matter which blend you use be sure it includes a binder, versus a plain gluten-free flour like almond flour, coconut flour, etc. Add 1 cup (2 sticks) cold butter or vegan butter cut into cubes plus 1 large egg whisked with 1 teaspoon vanilla then stir to incorporate the egg. I made these as a sweet and easy Mother’s Day dessert idea but we’ll be baking

into squares and devouring. It’s tempting to

INGREDIENTS + 3 cups + 1 heaping Tablespoon gluten-free “measure for measure” or “all-purpose” flour, divided (could use regular all-purpose flour if you don’t need to eat GF)

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees then spray a 9x13” baking pan with nonstick spray and set aside. 2. In a medium-sized bowl add berries, 1/2 cup white sugar and heaping Tablespoon gluten-free flour then gently stir to combine and set aside. 3. you do to cope with the market volatility in the meantime? And what can we learn from past global pandemics? VIRUS OUTBREAKS AND STOCK MARKET PERFORMANCE: There is no doubt that this pandemic is different and is causing a more immense dislocation than past virus outbreaks. However, it’s encouraging to recall that financial markets have historically rallied following significant health crises. Markets have generally delivered positive returns in the six to 12 months following the peak of a virus outbreak. What should women do during this time of market volatility and recovery to address these concerns? ADDRESS THE INCOME GAP THAT WOMEN FACE: If you are employed, be sure to make the most of your workplace benefits + Assess any health, life and disability income insurance + Understand your employer-sponsored retirement plans, like 401(k)s and employer matching, and utilize tax advantages and investment options in these plans. + Invest wisely and determine your risk tolerance. Get invested and stay invested. Diversify. + Look for a mix of investments to help reduce risk. A combination of investments with different tax treatments can help you manage your tax liability over time. ADDRESS THE REALITY OF WOMEN’S LONGER LIFESPANS: + Women live on average 4.8 years longer than men, but it can be considerably longer. + Women should save more, consider working past typical retirement age, find a balanced portfolio mix, and make sure you are protected with life insurance, disability income, and long-term care insurance. + Working longer means more years of compound interest earned on your investments. ADDRESS THE REALITY THAT WOMEN FULFILL MULTIPLE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: + Women have a familial, workplace and community roles + Parenting is a big responsibility on all fronts – including your finances + 75% of family caregivers are female. You may be caring for aging parents as well as your children. + Be sure you talk with your family about financial goals, that you are protected if something unexpected happens, and you have access to the financial information you need.
