OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)
“You feel like you’re outdoors with all the comforts of interior spaces. It’s a brilliant design feature,” he says. A lesser-known detail is the story behind the purchase of the home that led to its current status. As Shoen recalls, his grandfather and a top manager at U-Haul came to Phoenix for one day with the intention of buying a house where he could settle down with his big family. After being shown several homes that didn’t make the cut, the realtor made one more stop. It was the Price House, and it was real estate love at first sight. Sam declared it perfect to the degree that he wanted every single detail to remain as-is—not a pillow or bed sheet removed. He offered $250,000 cash. The stunned realtor needed some time to confirm the prospective buyer could swing this. But Sam had a favor to ask.

“He gave him his banker’s business card (to verify his information) and said, ‘Meanwhile, I’m going to have a hamburger. But, I need to borrow five bucks so me and my buddy can get a burger…’ He makes this cash offer but needs money to get something to eat,” Shoen says, chuckling. Before Shoen moved in, the home fell into what he calls “the worst disrepair” from being unoccupied for eight years. A conservation project brought it back to the life and The Price Foundation (PriceHouseFoundation.org) was established to ensure its maintenance. The home flourishes when filled with activity. Shoen encourages visitors to look at the home in a childlike way for full appreciation. “It’s easy to get lost in its aesthetic beauty. It was meant to have all the chaos of families and be the backdrop of all the good memories everyone is supposed to have as a family,” he says. “It needs to be lived in.”

My whole evolution has led me here. Everything I’ve ever done in my life has been surrounded by art and fire.” Grover never set out to be an artist. He took a craft class in high school that sparked his interest in jewelry making, and made fine jewelry for 15 years. Then he started a neon sign company. In the 1990s, he saw a program about Dale Chihuly, one of the most influential glass blowers in the world, and a new spark was lit.

S U PP O R T I N G THE ARTS
AROUND THE VALLEY, THERE IS ONE COUPLE WHOSE NAME IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE ARTS: BILLIE JO AND JUDD HERBERGER. “We just enjoy it and we enjoy being active within the arts community,” Judd explains. “And it’s also what we both grew up with,” Billie Jo shares. “Both of our parents were involved in the arts in their communities. Judd’s parents here [in the Valley] and mine in Southern California. So, it’s something that we grew up with and knew.” The philanthropic couple are both supporters, as well as patrons, of the arts. In fact, it’s almost impossible to live in the Valley without knowing their last name. Not only does it adorn places such as the Herberger Theater, but the warm-hearted, fun and giving couple is also often seen around town at various events. It was Judd’s mother, Kathryn “Kax” Herberger, who introduced the couple. “She was a very good friend of Billie Jo’s,” Judd explains. “One

teaching the couple’s five children and five grandchildren to surf (they also have five great grandchildren). In fact, it was her passion for the sport that earned her the enduring nickname “Surfer Girl.” Although Billie Jo no longer surfs, the couple still enjoys spending time in California. “We have our beautiful yacht in Marina del Ray and we love to slip away and go to the boat with or without extra guests,” says Billie Jo. “Over the last 15 years, we’ve created a separate little life over there.”

But, as they explain, when they’re here in town, their time is spent being involved with the arts. One of their main priorities is Herberger Theater in downtown Phoenix, and all of the resident theater groups that are part of it. “Over 30 years ago, Judd’s parents were the founders of the Herberger Theater. They built it. His brother was an architect and scouted all over the country to create the best theater in the time period and size period it was being built. [The facility] is so interesting because it’s also an art gallery. It’s multi-faceted,” says Billie Jo. The couple is also involved with Phoenix Theater, Arizona Opera, Arizona Citizens for the Arts, Cosanti Foundation, Phoenix Art Museum, Scottsdale Philharmonic, The Phoenix Symphony, Scottsdale Arts, and Release the Fear—to name just a few. “We also like organizations where young children are being inspired by the arts, whether it’s Childsplay, Valley Youth Theatre or Kids In Focus,” she says. “We like seeing how it gives young people a purpose and discipline and pride, and it helps them for the rest of their life. “Our only other real commitment outside of the arts is the American Heart Association,” she continues. “The Heart Ball. I’ve been on that committee for years. And TGen. I’m still part of that, as well.” The past few months have been big. In October 2019, the Herbergers were inducted into the Herberger Performing and Broadcast Arts Hall of Fame, and on the 50th anniversary of her graduation from Northern Arizona University (NAU), Billie Jo was recognized on the cover of the school’s alumni magazine. In late 2019, the couple gave a gift to the NAU Foundation, which will name the corridor outside the Instrumental Rehearsal Room the Billie Jo and Judd Herberger Instrumental Music Hallway. When they’re not attending events, Judd can often be found at his office—he still goes in every day. In the evenings, the couple enjoys hosting parties in their home. “We love to entertain” Billie Jo shares. “We have a lot of big fabulous parties up here in our house. We always have music—we always have a piano player, and at our Christmas party we had a harpist.” The couple enjoys quiet time as well, sharing that even in the hot summer months they enjoy breakfast every day on their patio. “We enjoy being active in the arts community, and we just enjoy our life,” says Judd. RICHARD
RETTER,
THE
YOUNGEST
OF NINE, GREW UP IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, IN AN ARTISTIC AND MUSICAL FAMILY. He won his first statewide contest in fifth grade. His photograph should’ve appeared in the community magazine next to the second and third place winners; instead they printed his name. The city was consumed with racial tension. “My teachers, both black and white, made sure I received all of the accolades that accompany being chosen the winner. I was able to attend Shawnee High School for a week and take art classes,” he says. Today, he’s an artist who does stylized pointillism, a painting technique using tiny dots of color. He also sings jazz, pop and gospel, and was a fashion designer. “I’m a storyteller and I like to paint about current events,” Retter says. “I try to create artwork that children of all different nationalities can relate to and identify with.” Recently, he was honored again, but this time by the U.S. House of Representatives for his charitable work in Louisville and mentorship of young, elderly and special needs artists. “My advice to young artists, especially those who have that uncontrollable urge to create, is to believe it. It’s real. A gift from God. Step into it,” he says. View his work at West Valley Art Museum through March 7. Visit RichardRetter.com.

LOCAL NAME D R AW S AT T E N T I O N WITH HIS ORIGINAL MUSICAL, AMERICANO!
EQUAL PARTS HEARTWARMING AND INSPIRING, AMERICANO! IS A MUSICAL TRUE STORY THAT IS HITTING THE STAGE AT PHOENIX THEATRE COMPANY THROUGH FEB. 23. Audiences will follow Tony, a child of immigrants who discovers his undocumented status when he tries to enlist in the Marines. With his lifelong dream of serving in the military vanishing quickly, Tony must change course. Behind this production is a well-known name in Paradise Valley, who was an unlikely candidate in creating what promises to be a theatrical success. Jason Rose is president of Rose+Moser+Allyn Public & Online Relations, and is known as Arizona’s PR Heavyweight. He has worked on an array of notable events throughout the Valley, such as the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. “I have always had a few creative genes, but this might be the most outside-the-box yet because of a chance encounter with Producing Artistic Director of Phoenix Theatre Company Michael Barnard.” Americano! didn’t start out telling the compelling story of Tony Valdovinos. Instead, it’s been an evolution, from presenting the topic to a local band, to discussing the many facets of immigration, to ultimately landing on this timely subject matter. “One of the relatable morals to this story is to never give

up. Tony went on to serve the only country he has ever known in other powerful ways, even if it wasn’t his originally intended path.” 36

Rose was fortunate to have an incredibly talented team behind the project that mirrored his focus—to make Americano! impactful, authentic and entertaining. “Americano! is an extraordinary work of art, and our team is hopeful that audiences will agree it is among the best theatrical productions ever produced locally.”

Rose reveals that music was a crucial part of this story, and they have created a concept album that will be released prior to the Phoenix run via a distribution deal with Time Life Warner. In combination, choosing the right actors for the musical has been a key focus. Seeing Tony, the inspiration behind the story, has been emotional for Rose, “Watching Tony at the various table reads is inspiring. Imagine someone calling you cold one day to do a musical about your life, and several years later, there is an entire show about you!” Starting this journey in Rose’s hometown of Paradise Valley has been special, and he lauds the importance of the inaugural run of Americano! being set in Phoenix, “This is an original work based off the story of a Phoenix resident and has been developed with The Phoenix Theatre Company, promising to be one of their most ambitious projects.” Americano! billboards are already present in Times Square, and Rose is optimistic about Broadway, “We know Americano! is something different, exciting and worthy of exporting from Phoenix.”
