However, there is an underlying challenge to what kind of a home many of us are able to

have. In Southern California there is a housing crisis. Depending on where they are in the income and social spectrum, many people cannot afford to buy their first home, can barely afford ever-increasing rental costs, cannot afford to live close to where they work and cannot afford to “move up” when their family grows. There is a shortage of housing due to a lack of new construction and too many people trying to fill up what is available. Thus, the price of a home continues to be increasingly out of reach for far too many. There is also that very embarrassing ugly reality of the homeless. Yes, right here in paradise, thousands of otherwise “regular folks” are living in RV’s, cars, shelters or on the

crosshairs of the moment. As privileged folks (yes, we in communities like the Conejo Valley, Calabasas, Malibu, Camarillo and Simi Valley are privileged), by and large the attitude is “solve it somewhere else. Don’t build a shelter in my town. Don’t build up rather than low rise. Rent control?… Un-American!” I do not have an answer. I’m not an expert—just a lonely voice joining the chorus. Our society must begin to embrace solutions that will likely require some compromise. If not, the American Dream will be out of reach for far too many of our current and next generations.

Additional funding support from The McCune Foundation, The Lluella Morey Murphy Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, Montecito Bank & Trust, and Pacific Western Bank totaling $1,480,000 will help the organization fund more affordable housing projects. “Everyone deserves a home and I am confident that our community will help us get there,” says Braunschweiger. HTF Ventura County set a goal of raising $5 million by the end of 2019 and an additional $5 million in 2020, which is anticipated to generate $10 million from the state’s Prop 1 fund matching program, for a combined estimated $20 million in support of affordable housing in Ventura County. EXPANDED REACH In 2017, HTF Ventura County became a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), which certifies private and nonprofit financial institutions that are 100% dedicated to delivering responsible, affordable lending to help low-income and other disadvantaged people join the economic mainstream. This designation created access to new funding opportunities for HTF Ventura County, allowing for program expansion to better serve Ventura County residents in need of affordable housing. Four current projects are underway in Ventura, Oxnard and Fillmore: Ventura’s Willett Ranch, at 54 and 55 Willett Street, includes construction of 50 one- and two-bedroom apartments for extremely low income seniors, with 15 apartments designated for permanent supportive housing for homeless households. On-site supportive services will include community gardening and meals, as well as targeted workshops and classes attractive to seniors.

MULHOLLAND BRAND Mulholland Brand understands that customers want products requiring little to no maintenance. To fulfill that need, the company manufactures a wide variety of gates, fencing and railing, all in corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy. To further minimize maintenance requirements and add to their beauty, Mulholland Brand's products are either anodized or powder-coated. Anodizing and powder-coating are similar processes. Each adhere a protective and beautifying finish to aluminum electrostatically, resulting in a much more durable protective surface than paint. Anodizing creates a durable reflective surface to railings, giving them a stainless-steel appearance. projects,
“This year, we are very excited about our farm lab at Plumcot Farms in Malibu, where students have an up-close and personal experience with sustainable farming techniques, all of which is incorporated into our science curriculum,” says Dr. McKinna. Within this school setting, “we seek to develop analytical and critical thinkers who grasp new ideas and knowledge from the world around them,” Dr. McKinna says. “Our students successfully transition to the next phase of their academic life, be it traditional high school, a unique program like High School at Moorpark College, trade school or traditional college. They can do this because they have gained not only the skills, but the confidence in themselves to thrive in pursuit of their passions.” The center also provides Psychoeducational Evaluations, which include assessments, observations and interviews to uncover processes that are interfering with each child’s academic progress. “Our specialist looks for patterns of strengths and weaknesses that emerge across numerous tests,” explains Dr. McKinna, adding that test findings often detail important information about a child’s natural learning style which aligned with their strengths can be used to remediate areas of weakness. “The benefits of having your child tested are enormous,” she emphasizes. “That’s because over time, children with learning challenges frequently come to believe that they just can’t learn.” “This can impact self-esteem, coping behaviors and their relationships with friends and family,” Dr. McKinna notes. “Many of these issues can be resolved if an assessment is conducted and an appropriate course of action is identified.” In other offerings, the center provides both Tutoring and Educational Therapy, a specialized educational support process in which educational therapists focus not only on remediation, but also on building self-awareness and underlying learning skills to help clients become more self-reliant and efficient learners. A host of summer experiences for children of all ages is also offered by McKinna Learning Center, including Get Ready for Middle School and Summer Skill Builder. “Summer is a great time to build self-confidence, learn new skills and make new friends,” Dr. McKinna says, “and we do it in a fun, engaging and nurturing manner.”

Only four days after her surgery, Silver was able to walk up and down her stairs at home. “It’s honestly surreal,” says Silver. “My heart was stopped and I was on a heart lung machine during surgery and I am living today as if nothing happened—except for a few scars.” Silver was walking within a week of surgery and playing golf just a few months later. “If anything, I had to stop myself from being too active,” she says. Three months post-surgery, Silver feels great. She is doing everything she did before. “We as women tend to ignore things, but in my case, I had nothing to ignore,” says Silver. “I just had great doctors who worked together to make sure I was well. At the very least, as you get older, get regular check-ups. You never know what might be brewing.” PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY It was 1 in the morning, and 42-year-old Teri Edelson was downstairs in the condo she shared with her parents. Something was very wrong. “My chest and arm hurt. I started sweating and crying due to the pain,” says Edelson. After a few moments, the feeling passed, but she knew she needed to get to the hospital. Her parents wanted to call 911, but Teri felt she was good enough to have them drive her. She got in the car and within moments was slumped over. Her parents called 911 and the ambulance met them at the entrance to the condo complex where they lived. “Teri was experiencing a widow-maker heart attack, which occurs when the left anterior descending artery, which supplies blood to the larger, front part of the heart, is blocked at its origin,” says cardiac surgeon Dr. Vivsha Dev. “This artery serves a big portion of the heart, so it is a particularly dangerous place for a clot and a lot of damage can be done to the heart if blood flow is not restored quickly.” “The EMT’s (emergency medical technicians) worked on me for 45 minutes and shocked my heart 13 times,” says Edelson. “They thought I was gone, but their perseverance paid off; they finally heard a faint heartbeat and got me to Los Robles soon after.” Edelson was in the hospital for 10 days, all of which are a blur. She doesn’t remember much about the incident and has speech and cognitive issues as a result of the heart attack. Looking back, she does remember feeling tired a few months before, but otherwise, she had no noticeable symptoms. “I’m happy. I’m alive,” she says. “This is my new normal. I can’t walk far and I can’t do two things at once, but I’m here and that’s a blessing.” Her advice to other women is simple— pay attention to your body. Go to the doctor regularly and call 911 if you suspect a heart attack. “Don’t worry about the bill! Get help fast—and learn CPR.”

PARTING THOUGHTS
Your Home is Your Castle
ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
YOUR HOME SHOULD BE YOUR CASTLE OR AT LEAST YOUR HAPPY PLACE. If you’re like me, we all have wish lists—things that you want to do, but life happened, so the to-do list didn’t get done. Well, we finally started working on those things at my house. We completely redecorated our master bedroom and bathroom. It turned out to be dreamy—better than we could have imagined! We also changed our style. We are in a time of our life where we are clearing out all the clutter and getting rid of things that don’t bring us fulfillment and joy. My husband and I can really feel the calmness of being decluttered. As we have four kids and have collected most of our life, it’s going to take some time, but we are getting there! Coming from a creative family, I always did everything myself. This time we thought it would be nice to use someone else’s expertise. You might want to hire someone to get their professional advice and fresh ideas for decorating. Although before that, you might want to take a look at Pinterest and pick out styles you would like to incorporate into your home. And even before that, you might want to start clearing out your home and surroundings—it’s so refreshing! If you have a lot of stuff that is close to your heart, take pictures and gift it to someone. It seems like our generation wants to keep it in the family, but our kids do not want the family heirlooms. Consider hiring an organizer for those spots in your home where you just can’t make sense of your clutter so you can have organization in your life and feel good every day. Remember, if you’re picking out new items, keep them simple as dusting is not something you will be wanting to do, I’m sure. The biggest thing I would share is it’s a journey and not a race, so take one step at a time, one drawer and one door to your happy place.
For more information on decluttering or downsizing, tune into the Kim Pagano Show on Saturdays, 7 to 9 a.m. and then an hour later to her podcast on iTunes or at KimPaganoShow.com. Start your day in a positive way and live on the brighter side of life! 70
