OUR FIRST OFFICIAL ARTS AND MAKERS ISSUE IS VERY SPECIAL TO US. One of our community missions is to highlight local artists from the culinary arts to musicians to fine arts, so to dedicate an issue to creativity is particularly exciting. Any community's culture is driven by the health of local business and the artistic "glue" that adds vibrancy to the mix. We are so blessed in this area to have great creativity and a population that embraces our local makers. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. As you read about the local artists in our community and their stories of passion and

MAKING CHOCOLATE LOOKS EASY, UNTIL YOU’VE TRIED IT. I did, thinking The Conche’s monthly chocolate making class would be a great backdrop for both Loudoun YMCA’s

annual

fundraiser,

“Chocolates

Galore and More” (Feb. 28 at Lansdowne Resort), and of course, Valentine’s Day. Needless to say, I got schooled. Simply making chocolate shavings for truffles and decorations for bonbons provided a valuable lesson in how heat (“tempering”), humidity, thickness, mixing and overall patience contributes to the quality of chocolate. Says Master Chocolatier Sara Dobson, “Chocolate is very complex and it takes a lot of practice to get everything right.”

Ba sic Tr u f f le Recipe I n g r e d i e n ts + Cream 116 grams + Dark Chocolate 168 grams + Butter 46 grams + Honey 15 grams From Pod, to Fermented and Roasted Nibs to Finished Bonbons

Method 01 Heat cream and honey together. 02 Pour over melted chocolate in thirds while stirring. 03 Add softened room-temperature butter and mix until smooth silk emulsion forms Executive Pastry Chef Kathleen Faliskie advises: “The colder your hands, the more spherical you can make your truffles.” The Conche is named for the process of mixing chocolate for a prolonged period at a precise heat. The same precision produces great dinner, brunch and cocktails. Chocolate making classes may be customized to any event or age. The next regularly scheduled class is Feb. 8. GIVING BACK

OAT L A N D S ' G R E E N H O U S E S T U D I O G ROW S N E W ART ISTS AND IDE A S “GREAT IDEAS COME FROM PUTTING PEOPLE TOGETHER,” SAYS WALTER BARTMAN (HTTP://WALTERBARTMAN.COM) FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF THE GREENHOUSE STUDIO AT OATLANDS. Greenhouse, named for its recently renovated digs, is only the latest in a long line of studios he has founded from the Yellow Barn Studio at Glen Echo Park to Goldfinch Studio at his home in Middletown, Maryland, to Summer Duck Studio at Tilghman Island on the Eastern Shore. Wherever he finds himself, he paints and teaches artists to both see and express what they see. When he looks at Oatlands, Walter envisions a “Chautauqua” – an adult education and social movement. Imagine a collective learning environment where a number of accomplished artists can hold their own classes, and those students can go on to show their work and teach and so on. “The Greenhouse lends itself to a number of things,” Walter explains. He’s teaching figure, interior and still-life classes. Another class by Christine Lashley explores how to take a small painting and enlarge it. Lori Goll, a well-known pastel artist, has been joined by Kim Richards and

Marcia Klioze, to teach classes starting in mid-January. (A full schedule is available at http://www.goldfinchstudio.org/.) Four nine-week classes and four workshops for up to 300 students will rotate every quarter. In Walter’s view, “I guarantee this will be a forum where people will be able to grow creatively and intellectually.” Professionals who have “followed the rules” for most of their careers find that when they retire they need to

Caleb Schutz, who became the CEO of Oatlands Historic House

and Gardens a little over a year ago, shares Walter’s ability to imagine how the Greenhouse and other like-minded educational, cultural and even culinary cohorts can use Oatlands as a venue. What Caleb most appreciates about Walter and seeks in other partners is his ability to turn his painting and instruction into a successful business. Having experienced both for-profit and non-profit worlds, Caleb believes melding the two is key to the success of institutions like Oatlands in today’s world, where generational philanthropy (a.k.a. “old money”) is largely a thing of the past.

Oatlands' Carriage House Offers an Open Door to Collaborators

20

Leesburg Lifestyle | February 2020

When he served as international ambassador for IBM’s substantial foundation, the company was the most generous benefactor of non-profits in the nation. When he later established MCI’s foundation, he annually gave away around $20 million. Corporations should still invest in the kind of community they want their employees to enjoy, but they don’t always know how, so it now falls to non-profits to help to educate them, Caleb said. “Loudoun County is burdened by the fact that everyone wants to live here, but if the growth isn’t checked and managed -- if it doesn’t build the civic centers and the playhouses -- you won’t have the social life and culture people need. If you lose that as you’re growing, you can’t get it back.” From his perspective as a fundraiser, he says giving has become more of a “business transaction,” where non-profits need to simultaneously prove their worth as change agents and reward givers in ways they personally or professionally value. In Inside the Carriage House is Room for Art and Entertaining

response, Caleb has adopted a collaborative approach towards encouraging diverse artistic, educational and philanthropic organizations to experience Oatlands, hopefully in ways that help them appreciate it as a cultural and historical treasure. Bluntly, sustaining the property involves much more than making the 400-acre grounds available for point-to-point equestrian and cross-country races, or even the hands-on historical educational curriculum Oatlands has provided for thousands of students in the Loudoun County School system. Buildings are expensive, and Oatlands has more than 20, including the 200+-year-old manor home, Greenhouse and Carriage House, often used as both art gallery and venue for community parties and fundraisers. All are housed on property that has seen some of the most significant cultural and political changes in the history of the country. With this backdrop, Oatlands can be a platform for discussing social and economic change in ways that could positively impact

Walter Trains the Next Generation of Artists to Think Creatively

race relations in today’s society, says Caleb. He’d like to see Oatlands’ Garden Dependency restored to how it looked when slaves lived there. “Such a restoration could provide a focus for us to discuss the race issues that still divide us today.” Realistically, he estimates it should take $2.5 million annually to restore, preserve and run the estate as a living classroom and venue for community events. That’s far less than the $50 million it takes to maintain Mount Vernon, but more than three times the current annual budget. The main house needs a new roof, as it is currently a complex patchwork spanning four porches currently stitched together by decades of parsimony. Even mowing is pricey. Yet, in the face of the hardships overcome by Oatlands’ previous owners, who built the Corcoran Art Gallery and established the National Trust for Historic Preservation, perpetuating Oatlands’ legacy seems doable. Walter likes Caleb’s odds for success. “He’s respecting what I can do, so we work well together. We’ll make it happen. It will take time. We’ll figure this out too.”

WHO FOUNDED 868 ESTATE VINEYARDS. (www.868EstateVineyards.com) The current “Near and Far” exhibit is the vision of Andrea Cybyk (http://AndreaCybyk.com), the vineyard’s art director. Her theme ties together the works of four women who know each other well, but who have very different approaches to painting. Andrea explains, “Ute’s work is almost hyper-near; you feel like you could reach right out and touch the fur of her animals. Kim’s first work on the wall was done on the property. Leanne’s paintings feature exotic places like Tokyo and Budapest. Anne’s paintings, while done locally, have a luminosity that gives them an otherworldly

Ute's Barn Owl Combines Realism and Abstraction

Born and raised in Germany, Ute Gil learned traditional folk and silk painting. She left at 22 for Spain to study Spanish and continued her work in pastels and oil. By 1990, she was in the United States moving throughout the Mid-Atlantic, coming to Virginia in 2002. As the kids grew, she had more time to paint, and has devoted herself to it full-time for the last five years. “I love painting animals, especially their humanness,” she says. All of her works portray happy emotions because that’s the quality in animals that draws them to her. She works often in Western Loudoun County where she can visit the local farms and catch some of her favorite subjects: pigs, foxes and a vast menagerie of birds. “In the barn owl, you’ll see he is very realistic, but over here in the darkness there is an abstract texture. I love the tension between painting what is realistic and what is abstract,” she explains, adding, “The absence of images engages your imagination.” Ute Gil

Leanne's Painting of Tokyo Lights Up the Night

LEANNE FINK

Leanne Fink with her Painting of Budapest

http://leannefinkart.com/ When her daughter sent her a photo of a local neighborhood in Tokyo, Leanne Fink was “so struck by the candy colors and lights on the walkway from the street lamps that I had to paint it.” The same was true of the street in Budapest that is included in her current show. “While it’s still riddled with the ravages of WWII, there is still such a gritty beauty about the place.” The one word that motivates her is beauty: “I am driven by beauty. I feel that there is so much to inspire me that is surrounding me that my need to express that beauty is what drives me to paint.” Leanne comes to the canvas after two careers, one in advertising and one in chiropractic patient care. Reunited with what was a childhood passion to paint, she now feels “like I’m burning daylight.” She’s not feeling rushed, exactly, just that there is so much to see and paint that she will produce probably 15 to 20 major works in a year. Recently returned from a trip to Jordan to visit her daughter, she was captivated by the desert. “The spirit of the desert with its muted tones and stark contrasts were speaking to me and

a love of the desert just latched onto me.” She’s already titled her upcoming series, “The Cradle of Life.” This year’s Loudoun Sketch Club President, you can often find her working on Tuesdays with club members. This month, she also will appear in the Art of the Piedmont Art Auction and Reception on Feb. 21, from which half of the proceeds will benefit Middleburg Montessori School. DENTAL GOES DIGITAL LOUDOUN FAMILY AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY SCANS YOUR WAY TO A GORGEOUS SMILE

WHEN ASKED, “WHAT’S NEW IN DENTISTRY,” DOCTORS HAIDY MESSIH AND ANTHONY BLACK D.D.S. OF LOUDOUN FAMILY & COSMETIC DENTISTRY ANSWER IN UNISON: “DIGITAL!” Explains Haidy, “There’s no longer any need to take impressions of your teeth to fix them. All you need to do to make designs for a restoration, a crown, Invisalign aligners or veneers is to take a scan of the teeth. It works much faster and with better precision and fit than the old way.” Anthony says their local practice has had the scanner for about a year now. It’s made by iTero, which was purchased by Align, the company responsible for making the popular Invisalign braces. As he demonstrates, a wand covered by a smooth, disposable liner is simply run across your teeth. It simultaneously records 3D external video, scans the internal structure of teeth and enables the construction of a time-lapse treatment program to correct teeth alignment or make other suggested fixes. This entire scan can then be transmitted to the dentists’ preferred lab in Costa Rica for custom manufacturing. Anthony says the technology has completely

changed the conversation between dentists and patients. “You can show a patient what their smile would look like after treatment right away.” Not only does it encourage patients by giving them something to look forward to, but, “it also takes a little of the apprehension out of things.” 30

RENOVATE & REFINE

NEW IN WITH THE

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the

tips

wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
