Food and Tr a v e l G o Hand in Hand CHESTERFIELD TRAVEL LEADERS: LEADING THE WAY AROUND THE WORLD ARTICLE KARA SAVIO

Clayton Lifestyle | October 2020

LET’S FACE IT…EATING IS ONE OF LIFE’S GREATEST PLEASURES. Food is the one thing that brings all people together, no matter where you live in the world. Whether it’s a regular evening meal, a special celebration, or a fun happy hour, friends and families always come together over food. So, just how important is the role of food in the travel industry? Chesterfield Lifestyle spoke with Marcie Boyle, one of St. Louis’ top travel experts, to find out. “Food really is such an important aspect of traveling,” says Marcie. “When my friend and I go to different places we’ll say, ‘Remember when we had the handmade pasta in Rome or the incredible gelato in Florence?’” Marcie owns Travel Leaders in Chesterfield, which has roots in the travel industry dating back 30 years. She bought the family-owned business in 2013, and relocated it to Chesterfield Valley. “We have so many ‘foodies,’ as we call them, who are anxious to learn as much as they can about culinary cultures and customs,” says Marcie. It’s true that for so many travelers, food is much more than a form of sustenance, it’s an integral part of their trip. “When people travel with an open mind, they find out what the world really has to offer,” says Marcie. “I’m currently working with a client booking a cooking class by the owner/chef of a lovely cottage in Tuscany. Who wouldn’t enjoy a private cooking lesson followed by a handmade lunch in beautiful Italy?” Owning a Travel Leaders franchise, one of the largest franchises in the industry, allows Marcie the partnership with suppliers and vendors around the world to offer clients special perks and experiences. “I did a 50th birthday in Saint Lucia for a couple staying at the beautiful Jade Mountain hotel with a rooftop restaurant set between the two Piton Mountains. Because of my relationship with the hotel manager, the couple shared a romantic dinner there as the highlight of their trip.” One traveling misconception Marcie is quick to clear up is that food at all-inclusive properties is poor. She recently traveled to one of her favorite all-inclusives: Grand Velas Riviera Maya. “The food was incredible. They have several AAA diamond rating restaurants offering fine dining, so whether you order gourmet lobster, or a hamburger, it’s included in your rate,” says Marcie. “Executive Chef Mario Lopez told me every resort has a beautiful beach and rooms, but it’s their wonderful cuisine that sets them apart. So now I know clients on a budget but wanting award-winning food can also enjoy an all-inclusive vacation.”

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

Travel Leaders book destination weddings, family vacations, honeymoons and company business incentive trips. They love booking entire vacations, but are happy to help with any portion of them. Marcie says their most popular destinations are Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii. “We also book a great deal of European vacations,” she adds. This year has been a bit more challenging, but Marcie says people are starting to book vacations again and are excited to plan for 2021. “We’ve adjusted right now to more domestic options, and I’m pleased to learn there are so many cool getaway resorts within a close drive of St. Louis,” she affirms. Marcie says when clients return from their trip saying she’s made their dream vacation a reality, that’s what it’s all about. “When you look back at when you were 9 years old, you probably can’t remember much about the gifts you received, but I guarantee you remember that special trip with your family to Disney World,” says Marcie. “That’s the beautiful part of this job…I remind the office team when we’re having a bad day to remember we’re giving our clients and their families memories that will last forever.”

Add a touch of gold to your neutral palette for an elegant look!

KICK OFF FALL WITH EYE CATCHING, PINTEREST-WORTHY TABLE DECOR! FALL IS HERE—WHAT BETTER WAY TO LAUNCH THE SEASON OF PUMPKIN SPICE, COOL CRISP MORNINGS AND CHANGING LEAVES THAN TO UPDATE TABLESCAPES. Embody the feelings of fall right onto tables by focusing on centerpieces and color choices. Angela Carter, owner of Mary Tuttle’s Flowers and Gifts in Chesterfield, offers up amazing advice when it comes to planning fall table decor. WHAT SIZE CANDLES, OR HEIGHTS OF CANDLES, SHOULD BE USED AS CENTERPIECES? “I like mixing it up with varying sizes of candles, votives and candlesticks. I love incorporating old and new, so using votives and then adding a few special candlesticks from your mother or grandmother is always a great way to make your table unique, while enjoying family treasures.” WHAT ARE POPULAR COLOR CHOICES FOR TABLESCAPES THIS TIME OF YEAR? “Warm tones give a fall feel...adding a fall arrangement to the table provides a great pop of color and texture, too. If you are going with a neutral palette, add a touch of gold for a simple, but elegant look.”

DINNER & A MOVIE IN OCTOBER TAKES YOU TO NAPOLI, AND THEN CRUISING DOWN THE NILE…

Clayton Lifestyle | October 2020

AS THE BRISK WINDS OF FALL HUSTLE IN, DINNER & A MOVIE WANTS YOU TO GET OUT AND EXPLORE, NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT EVENTUALLY THREE LOCATIONS OF A LOCAL, FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

RESTAURANT

AND

COCKTAIL

LOUNGE, CAFÉ NAPOLI. Originally started in the heart of Clayton at the corner Forsythe and Bemiston, Café Napoli features the most exquisite menu, and drink selections that you just have to partake of! After the great success that owners Tony and Kathy Pietoso achieved in Clayton, they decided to expand their restaurant expertise westward, opening up their second location in Town and Country, aptly named Napoli 2. And now, as sons Ande and Kye keep both of these locations flourishing night after night, the Pietosos have decided to continue their quest of sharing their delectable food and beverages all throughout St. Louis, with a fabulous new location in the Streets of St. Charles Complex, called Napoli 3. Ande says opening up this location in the heart of St. Charles, is totally a dream come true. “My parents worked so hard to start our original location, and expand it through the years, that my brother Kye and I are really honored to be able to take on both Café Napoli and our second location, Napoli 2 for them. Now, as our family ventures out even further West to St. Charles, we can’t wait to see if all of our hard work, and vision comes to fruition within our third location, which is slated to open in late 2020 or early 2021. And even though we are excited about this expansion, we hope that everyone will continue to visit our Clayton and Town and Country locations too, even once Napoli 3 has opened its doors.” And now that you’ve had the opportunity to check out two locations of Napoli until 2021 arrives, we hope that you’ll also venture out to a theater in Clayton, or Town and Country, to catch a murder mystery, straight from the pages of an Agatha Christie novel, Death on the Nile.

Death on the Nile © 20th Century Studios

DEATH ON THE NILE – HITS IN THEATERS OCT. 23 Based on the 1937 novel by famed Detective novelist Agatha Christie, our favorite sleuth Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) is taking a pleasure cruise down the Nile River, when the wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway Doyle (Gal Gadot) is mysteriously murdered. Now it’s up to Poirot to find out who killed the Heiress amongst the remaining guests, but the problem is, many of them are meeting with their own demise as the cruise continues… Death on the Nile also stars Annette Bening, Armie Hammer, Russell Brand, Tom Bateman, Emma Mackey, Rose Leslie and Sophie Okonedo. Or if Agatha Christie mysteries aren’t your “cup of tea,” then might we suggest you head back to your own abode to catch the new Netflix Original film, Rebecca.

REBECCA – HITS ON NETFLIX IN OCT. 21 Caught in a whirlwind romance with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer),, the young and naïve new Mrs. de Winter (Lily James) finds herself now living within the walls of her husband’s lavish family Estate, nestled on the English coast. And as she struggles to settle into married life, she finds that she cannot shake the hauntingly present, and constant reminder of his first wife, the gorgeous and refined Rebecca. Rebecca also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Ann Dowd, Sam Riley, Bill Patterson and Kelley Hawes. And we hope that regardless which film you choose to view, once again it’s a date night that you won’t soon forget!

Victoria's Book Club AUTHOR KARIN SLAUGHTER WITH STORIES THAT GET UNDER YOUR SKIN

26

Clayton Lifestyle | October 2020

New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter

AS HALLOWEEN APPROACHES, I’M REMINDED OF THE TIME I SAT DOWN FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH PROLIFIC CRIME NOVELIST, KARIN SLAUGHTER. Yes. It’s her real name! She gets asked that question so often, she includes the question on her website. Not only has she kept her name, Karin’s never forgotten her roots. Her beloved state of Georgia is included in every book. She penned her first novel at 6 years old. “My dad would give me a quarter every time I wrote a book. For the most part I loved thrillers, I loved mysteries, I loved the puzzle-solving aspect. And, as the youngest of three girls, to scare my sisters, that was my way of storytelling,” Karin says. She’s related to baseball Hall of Fame player Enos Slaughter, her grandfather’s brother, whom she never got to meet. Victoria with author Karin Slaughter

When I sat down with Karin in 2018, her 18th novel, psychological thriller Pieces of Her, had just debuted. It is a page turner and one of her four stand-alone novels. She’s also known for her Will Trent detective books and Grant County crime series. The Silent Wife is Karin’s latest novel in the Will Trent series. It’s gripping, gruesome and emotionally powerful. Her storytelling is so well done, you could join the story of detective Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton without reading the earlier books, but why miss out? Karin agrees, and says, “I’m a stickler for reading in order, but I write the books so you can pick up any one and know exactly where you are and who the characters are.” Learning to develop believable characters came from Karin’s childhood storytelling and her ninth grade English teacher, to whom she dedicated her first book. Karin says, “She stayed in my life until she died recently. She was always there and very much a mentor.” The novelist also gives credit to her local library for her interest in writing thrillers. “When I was a child,” Karin says, “my mother would drop us off at the library every Saturday, where, under threat of death if we got into any trouble, we would quietly peruse the shelves to our hearts’ content. I’m a big proponent of the library. I loved it as a kid and I support it as an adult.” Karin uses her fame to help keep libraries from closing with her Save The Libraries project, including one in the St. Louis area. “One grant we gave was to Ferguson to keep the library open during and after the rioting. No matter where you fall politically or socially, children need a safe place to go, and that library was open. Teachers volunteered and were doing the right thing and we wanted to support that.” Karin’s words may scare in print, but in person and on social media, she’s alarmingly charming with a quick wit. “Every crime writer I know is pretty laid back. +

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

+

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create

several

different

looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.

+

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

+

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.
