Our family really loves dogs, but unfortunately, our busy schedules leave the house empty for 12-13 hours on some days. For that reason, we are proud to have two Persian cats in our family. Once things settle down in the future, we look forward to adding a dog to the family again.

The Carpenter household has two cats that rule the home, Dobie and Birdy. Birdy is pictured here with our beautiful daughter Cady. While my kids and wife Wendy are cat lovers, I’m not so much, but the cats still love me!

WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE THING YOU’VE DONE THIS SUMMER WITH YOUR KIDS?

With the craziness that COVID-19 has brought to the world, we didn’t get to travel like we had planned. However, the silver lining from this shutdown was the fact that we ate more family dinners with everyone at the table than we have in the past three years. It might be a simple thing, but I would say that has been the most memorable for our family.

We have enjoyed the kids being home from college this summer, and we’ve done a lot of boating and camping. We’ve really enjoyed the local lakes.

change in attire as many of us work from home and spend more time enjoying outdoor recreation. My children still wanted to do their traditional back-to-school shopping, but

with school starting online, I see a lot of all-day pajamas and casualwear in our future. The cyclical nature of fashion trends are fun to watch as many of the cuts, washes and styles from decades past come back for the next generation to enjoy. From boho fashion (my favorite) that owes a nod to hippies of the ‘60s and ‘70s, or the midcentury modern clothing that emerged in the ‘60s as well, these looks can still be enjoyed to this day. Stonewashed, high-waisted jeans (please no), neon, legwarmers, blazers, and parachute pants of the ‘80s have made a resurgence, too. (I’m staying as far away from those mom jeans as I can regardless of their recent comeback. Some people can rock that look, but I am not one of them.) The ‘90s corduroy, plaid shirts, leather jackets, overalls, ripped jeans, chunky shoes, animal prints and crop tops have also made their debut again in recent years, and I was

We just picked a few to showcase, but numerous locally owned boutiques around our city and surrounding area offer a great selection. Plus, it feels great to support and shop local. We could all use a lift right now, and new fashion gives us optimism and promise that another season awaits us that goes beyond bleach-stained sweatpants and disposable masks. WHAT DESIGN TRENDS DO YOU SEE COMING THIS YEAR? The sustainability movement that we have seen in recent years is affecting the color palettes that we use. I have already started to see a gradual movement from cool grays to warm grays. I believe we will start to see a lot more green and a more natural color palette along with natural elements, like natural wood tones and grasscloth wallpaper. WHAT TIMELESS FINISHES MAKE A STATEMENT BUT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME? Marble is a material that always remains timeless and never goes out of style. Oriental Rugs are another statement piece that stands the test of time.

WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO PAINT COLORS THAT GIVE YOU THE COLOR PALETTE THAT YOU CAN PLAY WITH AND ACCENT EASILY? My go-to paint colors right now for walls are Agreeable Gray and Repose Gray. They both create a neutral backdrop to add pops of color. I like to use Benjamin Moore White Dove for trim because it is a soft white and not stark. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OUR READERS FOR ADDING A WOW FACTOR TO THEIR SPACE OR TO ADD INTEREST? Don’t be afraid to add a bold statement. I like to use wallpaper or a geometric tile to accomplish this.

ALEXA BONDON SEEKS TO CARRY FASHION FOR EVERYONE AT ANCHORA BELLA BOUTIQUE, HER DOWNTOWN LEE’S SUMMIT BUSINESS. At the same time, she also encourages people to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. “We want people to feel comfortable in what they are wearing but stepping out of your comfort zone every once in a while sparks new outlooks and personal growth,” Bondon says. “With fashion, adding a pop of color or a fun print or pattern to your otherwise neutral wardrobe is a great way to break out of your comfort zone without being too invasive to your current style.” Anchora Bella Boutique opened in Lee’s Summit within the last year, but it originally started as an online boutique in 2015 and then expanded to booths and pop-ups around Kansas City. This fall the boutique will carry cozy sweaters, cardigans, dresses, boots and booties, flat-brim hats, leggings, scarves and beanies along with floral fall dresses and tops. When it comes to selecting pieces to carry at her store, Bondon says they track data based on historical best-sellers and talk with customers about what styles they love. She says she typically goes to markets in Los Angeles, Dallas or Las Vegas, but this year she has been keeping up with FaceTime vendor meetings and through online marketplaces. “Our style is definitely modern and trendy,” Bondon says. “We pick pieces that will look good on a variety of shapes and sizes, and we strive to have something for everyone in our store whether that’s clothing, accessories or gifts.” Bondon says ponchos and oversized sweaters will be popular this

Does It Make Sense to Appeal?

Some divorce and family law matters do not settle. Instead, the case is tried in the family court. Putting the case in the hands of a family court judge can be a risky proposition. Most parties would prefer to settle outside of court, but it is not always possible. All it can take is one issue of disagreement for many parties to decide that they have no choice but to go to trial. After trial, the family court judge will issue a judgment. How this works can vary by jurisdiction and locality, but it can often take weeks or longer for a judge to render their judgment. It can take weeks because family court judges generally have to issue a written judgment that has findings of fact and conclusions of law. Some parties are happy with the results of the trial. Other parties are unhappy. In some cases, it can be a mixed bag. A party might like certain parts of the judgment and not like others. For parties who are unhappy with the results, the question for them is whether they should appeal the judgment. Appealing the ruling can prolong the litigation. It can result in more attor-

neys’ fees. But the question beyond that is whether an appeal will work. Laws vary by jurisdiction. Every case can also involve different intricacies. However, in a general sense, to succeed on an appeal, a party must generally show that the family court judge erred as a matter of law or that they abused their discretion. These terms can be somewhat complicated for many to understand. But to show the judge erred as a matter of law, this generally requires a showing that the judge did not abide by the statutes, rules or existing case law. Sometimes, this does happen, but it is not always easy to show. To show the judge abused their discretion is a bit more complicated. Within the confines of statutes, rule and existing case law, there is some grey area that family court judges can navigate based on the law. Take the standard in child custody cases that these matters are to be resolved based on the best interests of the child. To determine what is in the best interests of the child, a family court judge has to weigh the evidence. The family court judge also can believe and disbelieve witnesses. Showing a judge abused their discretion is not easy, but sometimes a party can prove it. To simplify how an appeal works,

think instant replay in football. With instant replay, the question is whether or not the referee got the call right based on the play itself and the rules the referee has to apply. An appeal works largely the same way. Parties do not get to redo the trial on appeal. Instead, the appellate court is to review the transcript and legal file. In doing that, the issue is whether the trial court erred based on the evidence presented at trial. For some parties, they might have a reasonable chance of succeeding on appeal. For others, it might be difficult. Nonetheless, for parties who are considering an appeal, there are deadlines that have to be followed or else a party can waive the right to appeal.
