K e e p i n g K o ko HOW ONE SPRINGBORO FAMILY FOUND ITS “MISSING LINK” DURING LOCKDOWN

MORGAN HARVILLE AND HER BOYFRIEND, JONATHAN ZIMMERMAN, WERE NOT PLANNING ON ADDING A PUPPY TO THEIR FAMILY THIS SPRING. The couple and their children had just moved into a new home in Springboro, and the COVID-19 lockdown was disrupting everyone’s lives. Harville, a hairdresser, found herself at home more often due to temporary business closings, and there was enough transition in the family’s life that it was not looking to add more. All of this changed when Harville received a friend’s text that Humane Society of Greater Dayton needed help. The growing concern about COVID-19 meant that the shelter needed to place animals who would have previously stayed at the shelter while awaiting their forever homes into temporary foster care. Preparing for a shutdown, the staff wanted to ensure that all of the animals got plenty of socialization and love. The need for foster families was acute.

Finding the right fit is essential when bringing a new member, either temporary or permanent, into a family.

This is also how the family got its first surprise: Koda,

He didn’t need to add that the humans get used to this too. “Animals bring so much joy in their relatively short lives,” Weltge said. Those who can open their homes, temporarily or permanently, to an animal in need will participate in giving that pet a great life. AN SUV FOR THE BIG HAUL THE 2020 SUBARU ASCENT EQUALS TRUE FAMILY VERSATILITY

ARTICLE GEORGE VALENTINO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 16

South Dayton Lifestyle | August 2020

GOT A FEW KIDS? Pets too? How about a boat or a camper? Do you like the outdoors? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, then the 2020 Subaru Ascent is your go-to SUV. The Ascent is the largest Subaru ever and features third-row seating, so there’s plenty of room for your entire crew. Family road trips and getaways have never been easier. With eight-person seating and 17.8 cubic feet of all-seats-up cargo volume, there’s even space for a dog crate and a few suitcases. With the second and third rows of seats folded, there’s 86.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, providing ample room for that dog crate, plus maybe even some camping gear and a few more suitcases. Subaru brings several beneficial features to this vehicle, including standard symmetrical allwheel drive, with up to 27 miles per gallon; 8.7 inches of ground clearance; 5,000-pound towing capacity; high-strength steel body structure, for a quiet ride; built-to-last engineering and manufacturing; and X-MODE®. X-MODE is a unique Subaru feature that optimizes the symmetrical all-wheel drive system, for maximum traction on slippery surfaces. X-MODE also incorporates hill descent control, for stability and confidence when descending more difficult grades. As if that weren’t enough, the 2020 Ascent is also equipped with standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology: an extra set of eyes on the road, adding confidence in safety for every trip. “The Subaru Ascent is the roomiest third-row vehicle in its class,” said Cassie Speers, from Subaru of Dayton. “It’s the only one with a true symmetrical all-wheel drive system, standard, with the latest pre-collision system.” To see and test-drive the 2020 Ascent with your family, call (937) 321-6964 to make an appointment with Cassie at Subaru of Dayton (995 Miamisburg Centerville Rd., Dayton, OH 45459).

NATURAL SWEET POTATO

DOG SNACKS NO MATTER HOW OLD YOUR DOGGIE IS, THOSE BIG “PUPPY” EYES CAN BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE. If you’re one of those folks who’ve been enjoying getting creative in the kitchen since spending more time at home, we have a treat recipe that both you and your pup will enjoy. These sweet potato snacks are loaded with vitamins A and C, potassium, calcium and iron. They benefit dogs’ muscles, nerves, eyes, skin and coat. With its anti-inflammatory properties, the cinnamon sprinkle used in this recipe is also great for dogs, helping to manage joint pain and reduce swelling, particularly in aging pups with arthritis or muscle soreness. As always, consult with your local veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your fur babies’ health.

INGREDIENTS + 1 sweet potato + ¼ cup coconut oil + Sprinkle of cinnamon

DIRECTIONS 1. Slice sweet potatoes into thin “chips” with a knife or mandolin. 2. Add to baking sheet. 3. Drizzle with liquified coconut oil. 4. Sprinkle with cinnamon. 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-60 minutes. 6. Let cool before serving.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

placed strategically on the participant, to help break up emotional and physical negativity. “People are magnetic, and the magnets throw off the field, helping you get back into a balanced state and changing the body’s response to that conflict or trauma,” said Dr. Cargioli. Repeating various strategic “forgiveness” statements with Towery while utilizing the magnets and certain touchpoints on the body actually helps the body reprogram the way it “feels” and responds to that conflict, releasing it. Kenley said that her sessions with Towery “make me feel happy, make me have good dreams and make me have a good day.” EPT is known for being able to help people achieve “change for good” in seven sessions, whereas traditional talk therapies and conventional drug therapy can go on for years. While Towery has numerous adult clients, her background in special education gives her an edge when practicing EPT on children. “I’ve seen EPT help a nonverbal child speak. I’ve seen ADHD kids get off their medication. I’ve seen teenagers’ acne clear up from resolving internal conflicts with family and friends. The problems and benefits are wide ranging,” she said. “Unresolved conflicts make people sick and unhappy. Figuring out the conflict and leveraging forgiveness makes people’s health better.” To learn more about EPT or to schedule an initial consultation, call Karen Towery at (937) 414-6610 or visit www.InnerPeaceConnections.com.

FOCUSED ON WHAT MATTERS MOST "Maureen helped us navigate from start to finish in buying our forever (we hope) home and selling our old one. She always had our best interests at heart and advocated for us from start to finish. She was responsive and explained each step to us. She worked with our contractors to make sure that our house sold at the price we wanted, and used her expertise in interior design to help us envision how we would set up our new house as we were looking at houses. Finally, she was a joy to work with, and we would use her again in a heartbeat." - Client review on Zillow Maureen Lunne, Realtor | 937.367.7796 | Maureen@ReignOhio.com 35 E.
