GUNNER. “I didn’t like so much of the stuff on the grocery shelves that included MSG, salt and sugar so I kept specializing my recipes as Harper got older. I thought ‘I can sell these!’ and over a year’s time I opened my business.” Tess began rigorous testing in November 2018. She got so excited and prepared a large number of recipes. She opened Low And Slow To Go in October 2019. Her menu changes every two months but the favorites remain on the list. The Mississippi Roast is a favorite and the Hatch Chili is a second favorite of shoppers. She added Paleo options in January. Tess is excited to be busy as a one-woman-shop and she hit the ground running. “It has been really fun!” State and city mandates that she have three licenses: a commercial kitchen manufacturing license; a frozen food warehousing license; and a local license with the city health department. The business is inspected regularly and it always passes inspections. She gets products from River City Produce as well as buying healthy ingredients in bulk. Everything is made from scratch, including the creamy bases, dressings, spices, and soups. There is no MSG or food dyes in the products she uses. Tess’s cream of chicken includes only four ingredients she makes from scratch as well, not from cans.

MARFA, TEXAS IS A CURIOUS LITTLE DESERT TOWN OF 1,800 PEOPLE IN WEST TEXAS. The city website claims, “Tough to Get Here. Tougher to Explain. But Once You Get Here, You Get It.” Since I love back road trips, I’m not sure it is true about “tough to get here”, but it is more than a day’s trip from Boerne. There are two routes to Marfa: a 5.5hour trip via Interstate 10 or a 7-hour trip traveling U.S. Highway 90. I suggest traveling one route to Marfa and the other back home.

Marfa is known as an arts destination. The Chinati Foundation, founded by artist Donald Judd in 1994, displays huge indoor and outdoor installations on former Fort DA Russell army base with 34 buildings on 340 acres. The venue displays an “interplay of art, architecture and land – the austere beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert”. The Ballroom Marfa arts center hosts exhibitions, concerts and the Marfa Myths cultural festival. Some say, “It’s more than just a place. It’s a state of mind. You can still enjoy the peaceful desert surrounded by mountains, sprawling ranches, and stunning sunsets. There are two stories of origin for the City’s name. One states it was named by a surveyor’s wife after a character in “Brothers Karamazov” and an 1882 Galveston newspaper says it was named after a character in Jules Verne’s novel “Michael Strogoff, Courier of the Czar”. Whichever is true (or not), Marfa attracts creative spirits. It was founded on a railroad water stop in the 1880s. The City is surrounded by working cattle ranches and is a typical rural town with a main street, court house, churches and well-kept homes. The hotels are filled

There is eclectic lodging such as El Cosimco’s vintage trailers, scout tents, 22-foot Sioux teepees and campsites. There is the uber-modern Hotel St George and the Hotel Thunderbird. There are diverse eateries and on-going performances by musical groups. It is reported that in 1964 Apollo astronauts studied the volcanic geology of the area to identify similar structures and processes that may be found on the moon. Our Hilltop Homestead is an eclectic collaboration of Southwest and traditional farmhouse style with astonishing Texas Hill Country views. The family home, designed to feel open yet inclusive, is anchored by this beautiful sprawling kitchen and 60 square foot island. The family spends most of their time here. From work to play, late night wine pours to school projects, there is room for all. The 10 square foot walnut cutting block introduces a warm, inviting texture, just where mom and dad love cook. The quartz top stands up to any damage the kids can dish out (pun intended)! Custom shaker cabinets embrace the island on three sides. And, a can’t-miss-it prep sink graces the ensemble. Ceiling high cabinets, oversized drawers, and trash pull outs throughout the kitchen make this space as functional as it is gorgeous.

When (if) the kids sleep, the adults may play! Our clients love to host, and this open floorplan maintains flow with up to 45 guests! It gets better; our design included an array of Marvin windows and doors working together to host guests inside without excluding views at every turn of the compass. Reclaimed wood from the 1940’s house levelled at this location is reminiscent of simpler times. Room for a round table keeps everyone chatting. If you could ever tire of gazing on the country-toile wall coverings (not likely), the dining room is accompanied on either side by a Trex deck swinging porch and a screened lounging and dining porch. This project was designed and built by Homesteads by Grit.

PA U L A B R I G H A M H O R N E R PRESIDENT/HILL COUNTRY COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS, (HCCARTS)

Paula Brigham Horner, President/Hill Country Council for the Arts, (HCCArts), moved to the area in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Horner brought with her a wealth of experience in museum art and history education from The Historic New Orleans Collection, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and The National World War II Museum. After assisting with a friend’s exhibition at the Museum of Western Art, Kerrville, she accepted a position as Curator and Registrar. Paula is involved with promoting HCCArts, writes a column in the Boerne Star featuring arts and artists - how they fit into the grander scheme of art history. With financial assistance and a shared vision with the Majestic Arts Foundation, HCCArts is flourishing in presenting concerts at the Amphitheatre and fine and decorative arts workshops. Through an ongoing partnership with the City, The Agricultural Heritage Museum and Hill Country Arts Partners, HCCArts promotes Boerne as an arts destination. Paula served on the Board of Kerrville Performing Arts Society. The key players were introduced to Boerne City leaders and Boerne Performing Arts was formed. Serving on the City’s Gateways committee, Horner assisted in drafting a Public Art Master Plan which became the Hill Country Mile’s Art Al Fresco.

WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE (CONTINUED)

TERRI WRIGHT My Story by Terri Wright: I was living my dream job … financial lead for a high-profile money-laundering investigation. Until 2015 when doctors discovered a calcified brain aneurysm, possibly from an earlier traumatic auto accident. The doctor’s said I only had a 50/50 chance of living – with or without surgery. My girls were 5 and 6. I knew I would get through the surgery just fine; I was worried about keeping my job. I tried to work smarter after recovery, but I felt like I was never going to make a difference. Working extremely long hours, my daughters would ask if they could help me so I could go out and play with them. My health, confidence and self-esteem diminished. How could I go from being so successful to being useless, unable to control anything, and thinking nothing was ever good enough? I knew I had a goldmine inside me that needed to be enabled, and I needed to focus my energy on me. I assessed my lifestyle compared to my priorities. They didn’t match - time to get back on track. Wooohooo! I found myself. I set boundaries. I stopped multitasking. I rekindled relationships. I became present and began loving life again. Helping others had a huge impact. Clients are amazed at their results: living joyful and abundant lives. I guide them in self-awareness, leadership, goal attainment, and self-care. I work with professionals in high-pressure organizations, with companies going through reorganization and individuals searching for meaning.

LISA HARTHAN How Lisa Harthan became a Servant Leader: Lisa’s son, Chad, was eight months old when diagnosed with leukemia. This diagnosis began Lisa’s efforts as fundraising extraordinaire and ultimate volunteer. Lisa ran a marathon in 2006 raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). In 2016 the Harthan family raised over $290,000 in a ten-week fundraising challenge benefiting LLS. Chad, now at UT/Austin, attended TMI Episcopal where his sisters Chloe and Claire are currently students. Lisa organizes events centered around parent involvement. She chairs the Advancement Committee for Development guiding how money is raised and donated. She also assists with long-term campus strategies by serving on the Board of Governors. The photo of Lisa was taken in front of the Chapel at TMI. The Harthans recently participated in an exotic car road rally to raise money for the Squadra Foundation benefiting children with cancer. The couple has chaired The Ferrari Kid Children’s Ball. Veterans and families at the VA Fisher House are recipients of an annual drive for Christmas baskets and stockings that Lisa organizes too. The next fundraising project Lisa has in her sights is for the San Antonio Zoo train. Chad played with trains while undergoing chemotherapy so that holds a special place in her heart. Recently at the Zoo Ball fundraiser Lisa was thrilled to name a carriage on the train in honor of Chad.

She’s been assisting clients in small projects such as decorating rooms and creating better flow within the rooms of their homes. She hasn’t incorporated full-time clients into her busy schedule but she now offers the full spectrum of design from start to finish. Eventually ME Designs will be under The Dienger Trading Company umbrella. She is offering only residential services now; however, Michelle has received requests for commercial space design and branding that will become part of her offerings by Summer 2020. LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED)

CYPRESS GRILLE The William cancelled “Fashion in the Hills” in order to help the local women’s shelter. The William is going right to the source of need right now by bringing meal dignity to the women and children of Kendall County Women’s Shelter. Ramey’s local restaurant the Cypress Grille is providing the meals. Scarlett Ramey, MS, RDN, CD, owner and CEO of The William said, “As a Registered Dietitian, I definitely feel called to prioritize the dignity of women and children during this time. They deserve the same love that we get cooked in our own food from Cypress Grille, and now it’s time we share the love! Our town is in need right now, and we have reallocated our time, energy and resources to helping the women’s shelter. We decided to benefit Kendall County Women’s Shelter with not only a sanitary needs drive, but also an opportunity for people to give back by purchasing meals for the shelter from our loved Paul Thompson, owner of Cypress Grille. Let’s all take the example of connecting our economy, and those in need.”

THE RICHTER BAKHAUS, CORK AND KEG, AND TAVERN 153 Main St., Boerne, TX 78006 Phone 830-331-2675 Housed in an historic building the Sanders began curbside service beginning in March. The hours of operation are from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. daily. Meals for families of four are posted on Facebook and on the website (https://richterboerne.com/) and can be ordered via phone. They offer “date night” specials in the range of $35 to $65. Some wines are priced at $15 per bottle and 32-oz growlers of beer are available for $18. The kitchen opened upstairs in the Tavern in order to facilitate the curbside service. After downsizing personnel to a skeleton crew of Chefs, Managers and a couple of staff, the team is still providing excellent food. Free meals are provided to employees who want them and owners Joi and Guy Sanders continue to give 20% of sales in food to Roy Maas Meadowlands. They feel it is important to support local Boerne businesses and organizations and are doing what they can to do so.

DIY

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space.

+

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.
