All You Need Is Love - And Art THE WORLD ALWAYS SEEMS BRIGHTER WHEN YOU’VE JUST MADE SOMETHING THAT WASN’T THERE BEFORE. — Neil Gaiman February is our month of art—making, collecting, admiring and learning. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to

look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. Build a carousel with Ken Means, read about custom handbag designer Tori Nicole Sadler and how each handbag she makes has a rich history and story behind it, or build your own art with AR Workshop. Read about some local artists in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression. We hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. Speaking of love, we can't forget a gift guide for Valentine's Day! And for a night out on the town, we have called upon Franklin's own Fab'rik and the ladies of @effortlesstyle to inspire us with three date night looks!

NATURAL BORN ARTIST TORI NICOLE HANDBAG DESIGNER

TORI NICOLE SADLER KNEW SHE’D BE AN ARTIST FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE. She says, I watched my grandmother joyfully tend her own garden, my father’s entrepreneurial career, my mother’s creative skill in her poetry, and grew up knowing that art and love was in our blood. Whether I was sketching on the walls of my childhood home or playing with fabrics, I knew that this was what I should be doing.” She did a lot of traveling early on in her career and adds, “God provided me with the ability to immerse myself in the lives of fascinating people along the way. It was while traveling that I really discovered my love for language and culture. Mixing these experiences with my intrigue for textile art birthed the journey of TORI NICOLE®, where every piece of wearable art is reminiscent of these stories and experiences.” Tori continues, “The first ever bag I made was the “Amelia” clutch, in honor of my maternal great grandmother. She was an inspiring woman, with her own “Garden of Eden” in the little town of Eden, Mississippi where she grew up. She inspired those who followed her to create something of their own that would impact those around them.” 30

When asked where she derives her own inspiration from, Tori reveals, “I feel deeply tied to my family and those I share my life with, and include a little bit of them in everything I create. of which are the essence of my inspiration and love. It is because of this that a lot of my bags are named after significant people who have played a strong impactful role in my life. These pieces all remind me of the stories that they have told me, characteristics that made them individually special, or experiences we have shared. It has become my passion to unite people’s stories with my own and create something unforgettable to symbolize that.” Tori is very excited to announce that she has begun partnering with boutiques to sell her collection in stores in 2020. She explains, “My bags are made for the person who will appreciate my art and all the love and labor that goes into my creations. Nothing brings me more joy in life than seeing people love their Tori Nicole collection pieces as much as I do.” ToriNicole.com

GIVING BACK

RETIREMENT S O LU T I O N S G RO U P AWA R D S A Y E A R O F M O R T GAG E PAY M E N T S GREG MCGEE KNOWS FIRSTHAND THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS A DISEASE LIKE ALZHEIMER’S HAS ON A FAMILY. Both his mother and father passed from the disease in 2016 and 2018, respectively. McGee, together with partner Ryan Moore wanted to use that experience with Alzheimer’s to give to those suffering through similar circumstances. So in their effort to give back in a more impactful and meaningful way, Retirement Solutions Group (RSG) partnered with Gradient Financial Group to give 12 months’ worth of rent or mortgage payments to a recipient who has been touched by Alzheimer’s or dementia. Cathy Muldoon submitted her application and the kindred spirits went to work. Cathy’s husband had been diagnosed with vascular dementia after suffering from a severe stroke. Cathy said, ““I tried keeping him at home, but it became impossible to do because I had to have 24/7 help, and that’s hard to find.” After her husband moved in to a long term care facility, Cathy decided to volunteer there and help support other caretakers. Greg explained, “We knew right away that this woman was, one, spending down her assets and two, is helping visit other folks besides just helping take care of her husband.” Ryan, Greg and all members of the RSG family called Cathy in ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA

to share the good news. Cathy was the sixth recipient across the country to receive this generosity according to Gradient Financial Group. RSG wants to continue providing this charitable giving locally. And this fall, they will do just that. RSG will again award a family who has been affected by dementia or alzheimer’s with 12 months of mortgage payments. To nominate a caregiver or family member for the 2020 RSG Gives Back award, please visit rsgtn.com/rsg-gives-back.

country. Pretty quickly people started pitching us the idea of hosting an event that would bring all of these wonderful makers together. My wife and I love feeding people at our house, so we knew that food and drink had to be worked in there somewhere. We decided to throw a big shindig and call it Made South Market and a couple thousand folks showed up.” Chris and his wife are no strangers to the south, as both were born in Nashville, and grew up on the north side of Nashville in Greenbrier. They moved to Franklin in 2003 and never looked back. Chris adds, “I feel like a big section of the country looks at the South as a placed filled with dumb, racist rednecks. We certainly have our problems and have committed sins as a region, and I don’t run away from that, but I feel called to shine a light on the people who are doing good things here. The Southerners I know are kind and gracious and smart and creative and warm and welcoming, and they are making amazing things.” Clearly, he’s on to something. This year Chris and company hosted their eighth different MADE SOUTH Market event, including The Southern Whiskey Society coming up later this month at the Factory. And if that isn’t enough, Chris has a podcast called Southerner. He

JOSEPH BOGAN, THE GRILLED CHEESERIE Joseph, Crystal and Luna Bogan Pimento Mac & Cheese

Joseph may have been in the music industry most of his life but when he met Crystal in 2004, he knew life was going to change. He was at a crossroads with his music and Crystal had gone to culinary school and even started her own restaurant when she was just 19, so it was almost a no-brainer that together they would end up in the restaurant business. They relocated from Los Angeles in 2009 and the rest was history. “Nashville is such a great entrepreneurial city,” Joseph says, “so we felt like we had a little bit of a competitive advantage with the experience we had in LA. We both had people we knew in the culinary and restaurant industry, specifically food trucks. Once we thought of the food truck idea, we were all in.” Joseph adds, “Bread and cheese is kinda like a blank canvas. You can do anything with it. And you can feed the whole family.” The move to brick and mortar stores was not an easy decision. The truck was wildly successful. Joseph states, “We loved the food truck scene, being part of the community, going from one neighborhood to another.” Today The Grilled Cheeserie operates three locations in Hillsboro Village, East Nashville and of course, Main Street in Franklin, and their main products, bread and cheese, are sourced locally from farms in Tennessee. The truck still rolls around so be sure to check the website for their daily location. GrilledCheeserie.com 46

FINANCIAL BUZZ

STARTING A COMPANY 101 THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT LEGALITIES ARTICLE LEAH JENSEN BENNION

YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT IS BURSTING WITH EXCITEMENT OVER YOUR IDEA FOR A NEW BUSINESS. But where do you begin to execute this great new idea? According to Leah Jensen Bennion of Jensen Bennion Law, PLLC, a bit of work up front can save you time, money and heartache. Your choice of a legal entity is an important first step. Two primary factors to consider:

TAX Many people like the idea of setting up a Limited Liability Company (LLC), because it is a “pass-through entity,” meaning you are only taxed on your personal income (note: S corporations and Partnerships are also pass-through entities). Corporations, on the other hand, are taxed first at the corporate level, and any dividends are taxed again at the shareholder level -- this is frequently called double-taxation. So you are probably thinking, “But Leah, it’s simple. I’ll just file the short document with the state to set up an LLC (the articles of organization) and then I’m good to go, right?” Not exactly.

CONTRACT LLCs were invented primarily to give parties the freedom to contract while still avoiding double-taxation. For corporations, the legal requirements and protections are enshrined in statute and court cases. On the other hand, for LLCs these are largely left to a contract called the “Operating Agreement.” Instead of relying on statutes for legal protection, the “laws” for the LLC are drafted into the operating agreement. Without an operating agreement, an LLC is like a straw house—when trouble comes (and it will) the whole thing crumbles. A personalized operating agreement is crucial for an LLC. Of course, there are other considerations including raising money, issuing equity, and protecting intellectual property. Institutional

YOU MAY HAVE PASSED HIS WORKSHOP WHEN VISITING THE FACTORY AND WONDERED WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THERE WHILE MARVELING AT THE CARVED MASTERPIECES SET ABOUT THE SPACE. Just as interesting as the pieces is Ken Means’ story behind his carousel creation. Most often carousels are created by a collection of carvings from multiple individuals, but Ken has singlehandedly created this collection, making the carousel uniquely transcendent. A recent transplant from Oregon, Ken and his wife Betty have made Franklin home after almost a decade of going back and forth between Franklin and the south coast of Oregon. Prior to beginning to curate his own carousel, he made custom animals, did restoration work and had his own carousel carving school. 60

“I WANT TO CAPTURE THE CHARACTER OF THE ANIMALS.” -- KEN MEANS

DI Y (CONTINUED)

Each piece Ken makes has a wonderful story of creation and lends itself to the piece’s personality. A particularly fun piece is the braying donkey, based on a real donkey that Ken and his wife Betty used to hear every afternoon at 4:00 pm when he’d holler for his food. The donkey was on a farm not too far from Ken’s shop in Oregon, when the donkey would get ornery and holler for his food like clockwork. It was such a constant that his braying is now forever preserved as one of Ken’s endearing creations. Ken’s goal is to ‘’capture character, not cartoon” of his animals. A small horse named Daisy that was commissioned in 1988 by a gentleman for his wife will be a piece on Ken’s carousel. Daisy was well-loved not only by the woman, but by her four children as well and when she passed away, unable to choose which child to bequeath the horse to, the gentleman returned the horse to Ken. Other pieces Ken has made house piggy banks or small time capsules in the bellies of the animals as special treats or surprises for the recipients. Holding true to the history Ken is knowledgeable and emphatic about, the mechanism that will power the carousel is a device from 1915 and was once a part of Barnum and Bailey’s when they were a traveling circus. The carousel will contain 21 “jumpers,” which are the animals that move up and down, while the remaining will be standards; among the animals will also be two chariots. 62

Franklin Lifestyle | February 2020

He’ll crown the carousel with 120 custom flowers at the base of the 12 hand-carved rounder boards. In recent years, carousels have been made with fiberglass animals, but Ken’s creations are carved out of basswood from a Linden tree. Ken still has five pieces left to create. So where is he going to put his carousel once it’s complete? Well, that’s what makes Ken’s endeavor so fascinating - he doesn’t know yet! The carousel has yet to find a home. Ken’s hoping to find it in Middle Tennessee and more ideally, Franklin, so his grandkids who live here can enjoy it. Where do you think the carousel should go? Email your suggestions to FranklinLifestyle.com/contact-us/ and we will give Ken the results.

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Create the most impact by displaying (not hiding!) items that carry the best stories or sentimental value. We love the use of incorporating these smaller figurines as bookends and paperweights.
