Changing the future of back pain.
At the Colorado Spine Institute in Johnstown, we use stem cell therapy instead of and in addition to surgery to treat orthopedic injuries and conditions that are brought on by aging and joint degeneration in knees, hips, spine, shoulders, feet, ankles, and other joints. With regenerative therapy, the joint can be healed by using the body’s own resources, and the need for surgery can be eliminated.

A blank piece of paper can determine the fate of what the masses think and spiral a call to action once one person’s pen touches the blankness of paper. There is an awesome responsibility bestowed to those who believe in the concept of the written word. It should never be taken lightly. Columbia University journalist Michael Rosenwald wrote in 2016, “ It’s undoubtedly true that

Americans read less print. In fairness to the digital gurus, I won’t hide this fact: The number of print readers has been halved in the last 20 years. But what if the big decline in print readership has more to do with a lack of quality than a lack of interest?” Guess what’s happening? There has been a surge of understanding that digital just isn’t getting it done, even to the surprise of the experts. People are realizing that there is more than enough room for content on all platforms. What a reader wants it to connect. They want to fall in love with the written words and the photographs. They want the words they read to evoke thoughts. They want to feel a heart connection with the people they are reading about. Did you know that a growing number of online readers use ad blockers, and less than

experience online is less immersive and enjoyable than print, which has implications for how we consume and retain information. Studies show that readers tend to skim and jump around online more than they do in print-- not just within individual stories, but from page to page and site to site. Print provides a more linear, less distracting way of reading, which in turn increases comprehension. If you haven’t heard, PRINT IS COOL, print is and always will be something irreplaceable. There is just something about holding the written word in your hand and knowing that it was your choice to read. A heartfelt thanks for being part of our print family. This is your publication. GIVING BACK (CONTINUED) According to Williams, “In foster care in Colorado, the graduation rate is 25%. Here, it’s 100%.” In fact, The Denver Post reports a slightly lower graduation rate amongst Colorado foster children: “The four-year graduation rate for foster kids in Colorado last year — 23 percent — was lower even than among kids who are homeless,” (https://www.denverpost.com/2018/05/24/ colorado-foster-kids-graduation-rate/). When a new child begins their time at MSCH, which could be as little as a year or as many as ten or more if needed, they are assessed academically and emotionally. Each child receives both individualized counseling and education at their level, and the average growth the on-site school sees students achieve is upwards of four grade levels each year. The end goal for each child is unique to them. Some will reunite with their families, while others require extended care. Something else that sets MSCH apart from other programs is its new Transitional Living Program, (TLP) meant to support older teens during their bridge from MSCH into society, which is especially important in cases where the parents are not involved. This support might include a life coach, tuition assistance, and help in finding a job. Funding is another part of what sets MSCH apart. Williams points out, “we’re not state or government-funded. We’re the only residential group care program in the state that does not accept state or government funding.” Additionally, no child is refused for the inability to pay. The money necessary for running this vital operation comes directly from donors, charity events such as the Annual Sporting Clay Tournament, and from sales made at their thrift shop (818 Coffman Street, Longmont). Additionally, over 500 volunteers help the facility run, including individuals and families, as well as church groups and those completing community service requirements. Visit their website at msch.org to learn more, donate, and/or volunteer.

WHENEVER YOU CAN FIND A RECIPE THAT IS CHEAP, EASY, HEALTHY, AND STILL MANAGES TO TASTE LIKE A DESSERT YOU KNOW IT’S A KEEPER. This simple treat only has three ingredients— bananas, greek yogurt, and nut butter— but is a crowd pleaser for dogs, kids, and adults alike. The idea that dogs can’t eat people food is a myth. Just as with humans, natural and unprocessed food is best. Truly, the list of “people food” that dogs can eat far outnumbers what they can’t— eggs, blueberries, watermelon, oatmeal, chicken, bread, coconuts, and rice are some of the possibly unexpected items that make the “can eat” list. So do some research and get into the kitchen to start experimenting with dishes that all members of your family can enjoy! We’ve provided a recipe below to kick start your kid and canine culinary quest.
INGREDIENTS + 16 ounces plain Greek yogurt + 1 1/2 tablespoons natural unsweetened almond butter (or peanut butter - without xylitol, which is toxic to dogs)
+ 1 medium banana , sliced
DIRECTIONS + Place silicone molds on a baking sheet (this helps transfer them easily to the freezer without spilling.) Set aside. + Put all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor; blend until combined and creamy. + Transfer to a measuring cup with a spout, for easy pouring. + Fill each slot to the top with the mixture. + Place in the freezer until solid-- about 3 hours. + Gently release the frozen treats out of the molds and watch your doggies and kiddos gobble them up!

Loveland & South Lifestyle | August 2020
ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN NORTHERN COLORADO IS HOW PET FRIENDLY IT IS. How many times have you been enjoying the outdoors and noticed people with their pets on a hike, run, or even at their favorite brewery patio? Chances are, it's pretty often. For this reason we are fortunate to have a place like Four Seasons Animal Hospital in Loveland. In operation since 2014, Four Seasons is a full-service veterinarian hospital and surgery center that operates 24 hours a day. As Dr. Jayce Lineberger of Four Seasons explains, they function different from your regular pet’s family clinic. “We are a surgery center and emergency room that take referrals from your family pet clinic. It’s similar to the way your personal doctor would refer you to a specialist or surgery center for healthcare needs that they can’t accommodate.” Four Seasons has 9 doctors and surgeons, 6 emergency room doctors, and also provides dental care for small animals. They operate 24 hours a day to ensure that your pet’s needs can be met at anytime. One of the biggest distinctions between Four Seasons and a family pet clinic is that that there is no normal practice, which means that they operate purely within emergency and surgical cases. This ensures they don’t compete with other veterinarian clinics and that they are able to provide service to a much larger area. Dr. Lineberger states that they get patients from all over northern Colorado and even southern Wyoming. When asked what he is most proud of, Dr. Lineberger explains “(We) are blessed to be able to provide this service and keep pet family members happy and healthy. This is a very healthy and active area and that includes pets.” So next time you are out with your family pet, remember the people behind the scenes ensuring they’re happy and healthy just like you.

FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)
PIÑLLAMA
3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF OUR HEALTH IS OUR DENTAL HEALTH, WHICH IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED IN OUR CHILDREN AND PETS. Ensuring your child’s and pet’s dental health is in good condition means being proactive. Having a regular check up with your family’s dentist will ensure that your child’s dental health is on track. Children should be seen every six months for a cleaning, fluoride treatment if desired, and an exam with your family dentist starting as early as the age of 3. Dentists recommend once per year for x-rays to catch anything that might not be visible during a routine exam. In the event that your child does need dental work done, it’s important to schedule the treatment soon after the diagnosis has been made by your dentist to ensure the dental health of your child does not become too troublesome. In some cases the dentist might recommend having your child seen by a pediatric dentist for their treatment. A pediatric dentist and their staff only treat children and are well versed in handling apprehensive or concerned kids. Our friends at Four Seasons Vet Specialists also recommend that pets get regular cleanings to help them live a long and healthy life. In the event that your pet is in need of dental treatment, Dr. Redmen of
