H o w t o Wo r k Fr o m Home When the Kids A r e H o m e , To o WHETHER WORKING FROM HOME IS THE NORM OR NEW NORMAL DUE TO COVID19, THE CHALLENGE FOR PARENTS TO JUGGLE PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITES AND THE EDUCATION AND CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN IS REAL. Even as stay-athome orders begin to lift, many companies and individuals will continue to work remotely for the foreseeable future to maintain prudent social distancing practices. Add to this the uncertainty of future school and work closures, the isolation from friends and loved ones, and the limited opportunity for extracurricular activities, and there is no question that many are looking for ways to fill in the gaps. This unintentional family dynamic, coupled with the anxiety and stress of current local, national and world events, may cause many to feel unproductive and inadequate. Consider some of the following tips to help develop a purposeful routine and supportive environment that works for you and your family so you can get you job done. 10
Columbia Lifestyle | October 2020
CREATE AND FOLLOW ROUTINES Kids thrive on consistent routines like those they have at school. So make a list of what your family needs to get done throughout the day - work calls, completing tasks, school zoom meetings, school work, meals, chores, and anything else. Be sure to include some time for fun as well! Now, start filling in a schedule with the activities that occur at set times and work in other responsibilities and activities to create a family schedule. Include your kids in the planning, so they feel involved and more willing to follow the routine. Then post the schedule where the whole family can see it. Also, be sure to adjust the design of the schedule for the age of your kids. Younger children benefit from straightforward visuals using bright colors, precise times, and pictures to make the schedule clear. SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS Kids and adults tend to do better when there are clear expectations set beforehand. Agree on a set of rules and expectations for the day regarding your work time and their school time. With older kids, sit down and make a written contract. If you have younger kids, work together to create a poster with visuals. To make it clear, talk about what different parts of your schedule, especially your work time, look and sound like, and what everyone should and shouldn’t be doing. This will probably be a difficult adjustment at first. So it can help to set up a visual reminder to let your kids know when you cannot be disturbed except for emergencies. Create a sign outside your workspace that clearly states the beginning and ending time of your work hours. This can help kids to be more patient. For younger kids, use a countdown clock so they can anticipate the end time. DESIGNATE A WORKSPACE If you’re not used to working from home, recreating a space that feels like going to a workplace can get you into a better routine and improve your focus. Try to create your workplace away from the main areas of your home and, if possible, with a door you can close. These tricks will also help remind your kids not to disturb you when you’re in your workspace. Make your workspace

DIY (CONTINUED) ASK FOR HELP This isn’t the time to try to do everything yourself. If you have a partner at home, take turns spending time with the kids so you can each have uninterrupted time to focus on work or time to yourself to recharge. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling to get something done for work, talk to your boss or team about the situation before things become too difficult. Everyone is affected in some way by the COVID-19 outbreak and, therefore, will likely understand. If you’re struggling to balance work and being home with the kids, try talking to them at their level. Kids are more aware and understanding than we often realize. So an open conversation with them may help. BE FLEXIBLE Realize it will take time to adjust. Even if a strategy works one day, you may need a different strategy the next day. This is a difficult time for kids, as well, who may not fully understand what’s going on or have the emotional maturity to navigate it all. Unexpected things will come in your work, with your kids, or in other aspects of your life. Try to build some margin because you’ll likely need room for flexibility. STAY POSITIVE Focus on the positive aspects of being home with your kids. Remember, the circumstance is only temporary. Things will eventually get done, and everyone is trying their best to manage right now with their own set of challenges and obstacles. Try to balance work and quality time with your family while you’re all stuck at home. The effort you make to do so can help your family bond and turn a tumultuous time into one filled with good memories.
Even if a strategy w o r k s o n e d ay, i t m ay n o t w o r k t h e n ex t .

AN SUV FOR THE BIG HAUL THE 2020 SUBARU ASCENT EQUALS TRUE FAMILY VERSATILITY
ARTICLE GEORGE VALENTINO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 14
Columbia Lifestyle | October 2020
GOT A FEW KIDS? Pets too? How about a boat or a camper? Do you like the outdoors? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, then the 2020 Subaru Ascent is your go-to SUV. The Ascent is the largest Subaru ever and features third-row seating, so there’s plenty of room for your entire crew. Family road trips and getaways have never been easier. With eight-person seating and 17.8 cubic feet of allseats-up cargo volume, there’s even space for a dog crate and a few suitcases. With the second and third rows of seats folded, there’s 86.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, providing ample room for that dog crate, plus maybe even some camping gear and a few more suitcases. Subaru brings several beneficial features to this vehicle, including standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, with up to 27 miles per gallon; 8.7 inches of ground clearance; 5,000-pound towing capacity; highstrength steel body structure, for a quiet ride; built-to-last engineering and manufacturing; and X-MODE®. X-MODE is a unique Subaru feature that optimizes the symmetrical all-wheel drive system, for maximum traction on slippery surfaces. X-MODE also incorporates hill descent control, for stability and confidence when descending more difficult grades. As if that weren’t enough, the 2020 Ascent is also equipped with standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology: an extra set of eyes on the road, adding confidence in safety for every trip.

Let's Gather TABLE SETTING INSPIRATION AHH. . .THE DINING ROOM. The most adult room in the house. And most likely the most underused room, as well. In my house, it is definitely used as a resting room for items that are not yet put away, but happily out of sight. Now, for me, a dining room was a must-have when searching for our forever house. The small cape from which we moved had a small dining space shared with the kitchen. So, now that I have my very own, it’s time to Gather!!! Over the years, I have built up a beautiful collection of dinnerware, glassware, linens, serving platters & bowls. Most of my pieces are white, so they match with all special occasions and holidays. I do have some antique hand me downs that I love to use along with more everyday pieces. The holidays are closely upon us and I just love setting a special table for my friends and family. If there is one thing that 2020 has taught me, it’s not the “places” that I’ve missed, it’s the people! Let’s celebrate in style! Below are some ideas for creating your own table settings.
1
Table Setting Basics Mix and Match Stemware. When using red and white wine glasses mix up stem and stemless glasses and use pieces from different sets. Always use cloth napkins. They can be placed either to the left of the plate or on top of the plate. Add fresh flowers to the centerpiece. I used plants from my garden here. But even in winter, you can find interesting evergreen branches, twigs, and berries outside for a seasonal centerpiece. Bring in the color! I like to keep my plates white, then add the seasonal colors around them. This pop of color can be found in the centerpiece, a colorful napkin, or even a table cloth. Candles add ambiance! I like to use different length candles - from tapers to tea lights. Just make sure they are unscented so they don't overpower your delicious meal! Bon appetit! 32
