ASK DR. RO

Dr. Rob, I often feel tired and run down with no energy to do the things I love. I thought I might have low testosterone so I had it checked and was told it was normal along with all my other lab work. What else could it be? Often times as we age, we do not feel the slow progression of the lack of energy and think this is a normal part of aging. This could not be further from the truth. Many times there are underlying issues related to inflammation, chronic infection, and mitochondrial dysfunction that are depleting you of your energy and living your life to the fullest. STAR PROGRAM IS RECOGNIZED BY CITY MANAGERS Washington Township’s efforts to support the needs of vulnerable residents through its STAR Program have earned the Annual Award for Innovation in Local Government from the Ohio City Managers Association. STAR (Safeguarding Township Adult Residents) is the brainchild of retired Deputy Sheriff Jeff Gray, who coordinates the program as a part-time employee at Washington Township’s Rec West Enrichment Center for senior adults. Gray encountered many people, most of them elderly, who were struggling with issues that threatened their independence. Most lived alone, many did not have family or friends to help, and all could have fallen under the radar, if not for an alert deputy. Gray took it upon himself to visit them between calls and help with everything from home safety and repairs to swindles and financial insecurity. Many tasks, like installing grab bars, Gray did himself. Others required referrals to the social service network. In all cases he was a caring, trusted

ARTICLE INTERVIEWED BY ARIELLE JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY ROXANN PATRICK

GET TO KNOW THESE SIX SUCCESSFUL SOUTH DAYTON-BASED BUSINESSMEN

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

After four decades it’s still fun coming to work and taking care of clients. Whether it’s a young man with his first paycheck or a longtime customer spending tens of thousands of dollars, every guest is treated the same.

larry jaffe WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SOUTH DAYTON TO LOCATE AND BUILD YOUR BUSINESS? I’m a third-generation jeweler. My father started Mayors Jewelers in downtown Dayton in 1944, on a handshake. We started Jaffe Jewelers at the Kettering Tower in 1979, spending 25 years there and 15 years at Far Hills and Stroop in Kettering; but we always knew we wanted a location in the Shops of Oakwood, where we could have a greater presence and fantastic retail neighbors. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Don’t wait—live your life. Don’t hold back. AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK, WHAT’S YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE? After a long day (or even a short one), I enjoy bourbon. I love to cook and will usually pair a fine wine with the meal I prepare for myself and my partner, Cathy.

chuck baker OWNER/STATE FARM— CHUCK BAKER AGENCY SPRINGBORO WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO SUCCEEDING IN YOUR MARKET? I’m guided by the principle that “my success follows the success of my customers.” While a good portion of my job requires some form of selling, I always teach my team to take the approach of putting the mission over commission. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Learning about what people really care about and empowering them to realize their goals. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SOUTH DAYTON TO LOCATE AND BUILD YOUR BUSINESS? I really like the people here. The atmosphere of the community makes me feel right at home. I was even married at South Dayton Church of Christ, with an awesome reception at Heather’s Cafe in Springboro. (We love Ms. Heather!) WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “Stay pliable and playful,” meaning to be a lifelong learner and never take yourself too seriously. AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK, WHAT’S YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE?
