The question should be “How are you?” Not “Who are you?”

When a doctor sees 30-40 patients a day, it’s more difficult to know each of them on a truly personal level. At PartnerMD, our concierge primary care doctors see far fewer patients than a traditional practice, allowing significant time for listening, understanding and a respectful two-way conversation. This is how real partnerships are built, leading to more personalized care and lifelong advocacy for you and your health. Get to know us better at partnerMD.com.

Co n c i e r g e Medicine OUR WORLD IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING, PROPELLED FORWARD BY ADVANCEMENTS WHICH IMPROVE OUR EFFICIENCY, PRODUCTION, AND COMMUNICATION. Yet, the standard approach to healthcare remains the same. Physicians are grossly overbooked, resulting in patients spending more time waiting and less time receiving treatment. On average, primary care doctors are forced to see 35-40 patients per day as insurance companies reimburse less and less for care. For those who seek a more efficient, hand-on, focused approach to their healthcare, concierge medicine may be the answer. Concierge medicine, also referred to as membership medicine, requires patients to pay a monthly fee in order to belong to a medical practice. In turn, members receive a higher level of care and access as physicians are able to see fewer patients and spend longer periods of time with each individual. In a typical primary care doctor’s office, one might expect to wait a few weeks for an open appointment, sit in the waiting room on the day of the appointment, then wait in the exam room to see the doctor, only to have a few rushed moments with the physician. Feelings of frustration and impatience may arise, but often it is simply the failure of the system and not a reflection on the doctor. At PartnerMD, a membership medicine practice, patients are guaranteed same or next day appointments, 365 days a year. Patients will never wait more than 5 minutes for any appointment and are allotted at least 30 minutes with their doctor for each visit, as well as at least two hours for a physical. If at any time a patient is concerned about their health and considering a doctor’s visit, they have 24-hour access to a physician via phone to assess the situation and determine the best course of action; potentially, the patient may be able to avoid the headache of an office visit by addressing treatment from the comfort of their home. The rational benefits of concierge medicine include improved time management and improved health. Doctors are able to gather more information from a patient at each visit and gain a clearer overall view of that patient’s health, from a detailed history to careful consideration of current concerns. As a patient’s primary care doctor, they can better diagnose, treat, manage, and refer to a specialist when necessary. If a referral is necessary, practices

ENRICHING OUR COMMUNITY

Another important element of Stavna Ballet is their outreach program which Shannon founded in 2017. “This is really close to my heart,” she says. “It’s expensive to dance…that’s why I started Stavna Reach. We teach free classes to underserved areas in Richmond from four satellite locations around the area. The company also does free performances at these locations for those who are unable to make it to the theater. Everyone should be exposed to ballet! And the company really loves it because they get to give back and do another show.” In addition to Stavna Reach programs, professional dancers from Stavna visit local libraries once a month to perform special story times, in which children are read a story and excerpts from the tale are acted out. Though Shannon’s professional dance shoes have been hung up for nearly a decade, she has thoroughly enjoyed her evolution from performer to director. With two children at home, Lilah (9) and Paxton (2), she feels fulfilled in her role behind the scenes, especially as the company continues to flourish and grow. As she shares the art of dance with her community, her greatest joy is seeing the effect it can have on others. “It’s all worth it to see someone’s face light up,” she concludes. Upcoming Performance On Saturday January 11th, the Stavna Ballet Company will be performing a full length ballet adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Ticket information for the performance may be found at stavnaballet.com.

FROM CASTS TO CANCER – FROM SIMPLE TO COMPLEX – WHEN YOUR CHILD NEEDS MEDICAL CARE, YOU WANT THE BEST. Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU covers nearly every pediatric health care need under the sun. In just a few short years, they’ll provide much of this care in an all-new inpatient hospital adjacent to the outpatient Children’s Pavilion in Richmond. Chances are, you know a child who has been to CHoR, whether for a general checkup, outpatient therapy, life-saving emergency treatment or ongoing care for a complex medical need. Last year alone, CHoR cared for thousands of children through: + 275,970 outpatient visits + 21,818 emergency visits + 4,333 surgeries + 6,946 acute care admissions BUILDING THE BEST PLACE FOR KIDS TO GET BETTER CHoR continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of the

IMPROVING LIVES In April, CHoR will celebrate its centennial anniversary and rich history of caring for kids from Virginia and beyond. They’re also planning for the future with great promise for what’s to come. Many of CHoR’s doctors and nurses are actively involved in research aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of childhood diseases. This research spans across all of the pediatric specialties, with experts in different conditions and body systems working together. From discovering how to stem

“When this new building is complete, we’ll have an entire city block dedicated to caring for kids. That’s what it’s all about – the kids.” the rising tide of obesity to developing new aerosol treatments for cystic fibrosis, they’re finding new ways to make kids’ lives better. CHoR doctors also keep abreast of the research and clinical trials taking place outside the hospital and across the globe and incorporate them into the care they provide their patients. Twentymonth-old Remy Miller’s parents are grateful for this, as neurologist Dr. Amy Harper was able to provide timely and lifesaving treatment for Remy’s spinal muscular atrophy – a rare genetic disease and leading genetic cause of infant death – almost immediately upon the drug’s FDA approval. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Whether a child has a medical emergency or a chronic condition requiring ongoing treatment, they can turn to CHoR for the best care, regardless of their zip code, background or family’s ability to pay. The new hospital will ensure that the space where they receive this care is also exceptional. Visit campaign.chrichmond.org to follow the progress of the new hospital and learn how you can get involved in making it the best place possible and support the needs of thousands of families every year.

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time.

When you feel like you’re in a rut with your workouts and just don’t feel motivated anymore, try something new and exciting! Rock climbing is a great way to introduce something different without it feeling like a workout.

01 C L I M B I N G GYM S Climbing gyms have been popping up everywhere as the sport becomes more mainstream + are a great option for those who prefer to be adventurous indoors.

02 B O U L D E R I N G Bouldering, great for developing power, is a type of rock climbing where the climber doesn’t use ropes or harnesses, generally done on a much smaller scale.

03 S H A P E U P Since climbing can use different muscles from traditional workouts, it’s important to keep up with strengthening those. Key areas to pay attention to include upper body, lower body, core, fingers and wrists.
