TY NELSON DESIGN & REMODEL BRINGS MODERN COMFORT AND RUSTIC CHARM TO A RESIDENCE WITH A PROMINENT PAST ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER | PHOTOGRAPHY NATHAN SATRAN

Billings Lifestyle | March 2020

THE CITY OF BILLINGS BOASTS A RICH HISTORY EMBODYING THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST, CHARACTERIZED BY ECONOMIC GROWTH AND EXPANSION, AS WELL AS A RUGGED TERRAIN AND THE MYTHOS OF THE COWBOY LIFESTYLE. Downtown landmarks, such as the Billings Depot and Moss Mansion, stand as reminders of the town’s beginnings as a railhead and cultural hub. Residential landmarks have also been preserved, weathering the passage of time and changing of the landscape to stand as tributes to a bygone era. One such example is a home on Smokey Lane, recently renovated by Ty Nelson Design & Remodel. Built at the turn of the century in 1902, the residence once occupied a tract of land a few miles from the city. In 1936, legendary artist and writer Will James moved to Billings and purchased the residence. He spent five years in the CONTINUED >

organization without being obtrusive. The concrete sink and countertop, also custom made, lend a unique appeal. Tile Flooring The eye-catching pattern on the bathroom floor was created by hand painted porcelain tiles. Bathtub As the downstairs bath will serve the new baby in the nursery nearby, the addition of a bathtub was necessary. Simple, white tile contrasts nicely against the rough texture of the opposing wood wall. The dark shower head and faucet tie the color palettes and textures together. Window The rectangular window had to be cut into the sandstone foundation, a formidable endeavor. Ty’s expert mason carefully worked with the original sandstone brickwork to create the new opening. HISTORICAL HOME, MODERN CHALLENGES “There were many challenges working on a house this old,” recounts Ty Nelson. “We found out that the home had been remodeled, several times, prior to us working on it.” All of the plumbing and electrical had to be relocated due to a layout change within the house. Ty and his team also discovered a concerning issue with the flooring. “The entire concrete floor was sloping, approximately four inches out of level,” he says. “It was something that we needed to address and correct. After having a structural engineer evaluate the issue, they determined it was not the foundation, only the concrete floor, which is thankfully separate from the foundation.” It took more than 100 bags of leveling compound in order to resolve the sloping problem. A basalt tile floor was then installed over the concrete in the foyer. Basalt is an all-natural stone, so while its dark gray tones insinuate a modern design, it still adds a natural element to the overall aesthetic. The finished home offers a residence filled with charming ambiance, sleek design, and expertly executed custom features, while maintaining a foundation which is rooted in Billings’ past.

Indoor SET REALISTIC GOALS AND UNDERSTAND YOUR STRENGTHS In order to maximize profits, many property owners (with one or two homes) complete their own repairs and renovations. For those not well-versed in drywall, plumbing, or the array of other home related projects a landlord may undertake, perhaps this type of investment isn't the right choice. While some jobs can be hired out, an investor needs to weigh these costs against the gains they hope to make from the property. Also, while a fixer-upper may seem like the perfect bargain, flipping a property is extremely time consuming and labor intensive. Know your area of expertise before diving into a huge project. PLAN AHEAD Pay down debt, save for the down payment, and beware of high interest rates. The requirements for an investment property differ from those of an owner-occupied property. More stringent requirements mean a larger down payment, at least 20% for a rental property, for example.

GRAND DUMP AND PRIORITIZING Cleaning might get messy...at least to start. Doing a grand dump of the contents of your closet and drawers is hugely beneficial, as the all-encompassing view allows you to visualize how much stuff you’ve accumulated. Once everything is laid out, it will be much easier to parse through and sort. Organize into categories: stash, save, and “see ya later”. STASH: Large bulky winter items, sweaters, gloves, scarves, snow boots, etc. Keep some specific items handy in case of inclement weather, but most can be tucked away in a bin or container until next season. SAVE: Warm weather items, spring apparel, light jackets and sweaters. Get your closet set for the upcoming months. SEE YA’ LATER: Items that are stained, pilled, or damaged can be tossed. Clothing that doesn’t fit or hasn’t been worn in over a year should be set aside and considered for donation or selling. If you are undecided on an item or waffling, get rid of it. Chances are you’re having second thoughts for a reason.

ORGANIZING Once you have your clothing sorted, organize the items you wish to keep. Hang items on slim hangers by clothing type (pants, button up shirts, sweaters, etc.) or color. You can also utilize storage solutions like shoe racks, shelving, and storage containers to make your closet more user-friendly.

TREND SETTER

VERSATILE, EYE-CATCHING, AND CHARMING, SHIPLAP CAN ELEVATE ALMOST ANY SPACE. Although commonly used as a method for covering exterior walls, such as sheds, barns, seasonal homes, and cabins, the trend has made its way indoors in a big way. From bathrooms, to accent walls, to nooks, and kitchen backsplashes, shiplap offers a visually appealing way to add rustic modern flair. KITCHEN Inviting and chic, this modern kitchen implements shiplap as an alternative to the more traditional tile or mosaic patterned backsplash. BATHROOM An inexpensive, yet polished, option for adding subtle depth and variation to a smaller space. ACCENT WALL Finishing shiplap with dark paint or stain colors, rather than the traditional white, makes a bold statement without overpowering. Let the wall be the focal point and anchor for the rest of the room. CEILING Take advantage of this underused canvas. Embrace contrasting colors and textures. VERTICAL OR SLANTED PLANKS Most shiplap is displayed horizontally, but versatility is a key benefit of this trend! Create lines that accentuate the space being decorated. SMALLER SCALE Even a touch of shiplap can elevate a room. Frames, headboards, and more can be crafted using the same plank design.

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

Utilizing a water filter is effective and budget-friendly. Carbon filters are the most economical and provide great results. Carry stainless steel or other BPA-free bottles. VENTILATION Believe it or not, the air inside our home is often dirtier than the air outside, with two to five times the concentrations of dangerous airborne chemicals, gases, molds and other particulates. This makes proper ventilation essential, especially in newer air-tight, energy-efficient homes built to stop drafts and energy loss. For areas that A HEALTHY HOME IS A HAPPY HOME. specialties. An opportunity arose in Jackson, Mississippi which would alter the course of his already distinguished career.

“He had a music box inside his chest which played Brahm’s Lullaby when the stuffed animal was moved,” Dr. Muskett recalls. “When the music stopped, I opened his chest and removed the box, had it repaired, and then replanted it…My mother, Montana’s first female pharmacist, and my father, an educator, were wonderfully nurturing people, but I think cutting up my Teddy bear mildly alarmed them.”

“A friend of mine, Dr. Walt Peet, a revered plastic surgeon, suggested I replace him on his retirement,” says Dr. Muskett. “I moved our family to Jackson, Mississippi in 2003, where I did another residency in plastic surgery. We returned to Billings in 2005, where I joined Dr. Steve Grosso at Billings Plastic Surgery. For the second time in my life, I joined a practice with spectacular surgeons and even better people.”

This inherent interest in healing would be only one facet of his childhood and young adulthood. Growing up in Missoula, Dr. Muskett participated in speech team, cross country running, and track during the school year. His summers were spent building log homes in the Swan Valley. He majored in English Literature at Montana State University while working as an orderly at the Bozeman hospital. “My respect for the nursing profession deepened there,” he affirms, “along with my desire to become a cardiac surgeon. I was fortunate to be selected to the University of Washington Medical School. In Seattle I participated in cardiac surgical research, and met my wife Pam at one of our epic Friday-after-finals parties. She thought I was a good listener. Actually, I was having a hard time talking.” They moved to Salt Lake City and Dr. Muskett trained in general surgery. His interest in the cardiac specialty deepened, culminating in a fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. “We did everything from heart and lung transplants to tiny babies,” reflects Dr. Muskett. “I was lucky enough to land a job at the end of my training with two great surgeons in Billings, Montana--Dr. Steve Hubbard and Dr. Tim Dernbach.” In 1991, the Muskett family moved to Billings. Alan, his wife Pam, and their two young daughters, Sally and Cathy, would be joined by a son, Luke, in 1994. “For twelve years our surgical group had a great run of success. Things changed, however, when non-surgical methods of treating heart disease came in the form of balloons and stents. Our volumes dropped and reimbursement plummeted.”

Plastic surgery became the ideal outlet for Dr. Muskett’s innate desire to heal. He treats patients of every age, his knowledge encompasses every part of the body, and he is utilizing a tool box that can fix almost anything. And fixing is his passion. “I like fixing things. I have a wood shop, forty acres of forest I am rehabbing, and I like to think, with my newspaper column and books, that I am fixing a few souls along the way.” In finding a home at Billings Plastic Surgery, Dr. Muskett is able to serve the community in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling. Alongside Dr. Grosso, he works with all medical and surgical disciplines to heal and treat, not only within Billings, but around the globe. “We serve the community with tertiary level reconstructive capability,” he says of Billings Plastic Surgery. “And with all that experience and training and expertise… we do some pretty nice cosmetic surgery. We thank you, our cosmetic surgery patients, because you are the ones that allow us to travel to Central America and India to do cleft lips and palates on the underprivileged kids there.” While some may wonder about the meaning of their lives, Dr. Muskett needs no such assurance. He believes that the most meaningful life is one of service. An act he and his team perform each day. “The most meaningful thing any of us will ever do is relieve the suffering of another person. I get to do that, in a spectacular fashion sometimes, but we all can. Just listening to a person in pain is a critical service.”

This divergence in medical climate caused Dr. Muskett to consider other
