National Night Out The Bridgewater Police Department hosted National Night Out on August 6. Residents were treated to an evening of free food and activities. This annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

Fit Body Run for Apraxia Kids 5K Plus Bridgewater Fit Body Bootcamp hosted their inaugural Fit Body Run for Apraxia Kids 5K Plus on August 4 at the Bridgewater Commons.

Proceeds benefited Apraxia Kids. Childhood apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak.

Apraxia Kids works to help children find their voices.

Home to more than

50 RESTAURANTS, SOMERVILLE IS ON THE MAP AS AN AMAZING CULINARY DESTINATION. Despite the vast number of dining opportunities, many patrons find themselves in the habit of repeatedly visiting the same establishments over and over, failing to branch out and try new places.

Is it the fear of an unknown menu? Not knowing these restaurants exist? Or simply the comfort of knowing what to expect from old faithful?

Beyond the Plate Food Tours makes it easy to try new places. Tourgoers are given the ability to sample several restaurants in one afternoon. The tours are led by a local guide who gives “the dish” on the stories beyond the plate. At each stop, the guide highlights the best items on the menu, so diners do not have to figure out what to order.

The tours provide more than just a tasting. They deliver an educational experience showcasing the most delicious, crowd-pleasing and unique locations in Somerville. As tourgoers are seated at the various stops, they get one-on-one exclusive access to chefs and owners. Walking from one tasting location to the next, the tour guides sprinkle in bits of art, culture and history.

Each tour has variations, so diners can attend multiple times and always be trying new restaurants and menus. To give diners a taste of what to expect, here we highlight a walking tour held this summer. Led by a local food editor, Jenna Intersimone, the tour stopped at five of Somerville’s tastiest restaurants.

This Egyptian restaurant brings a great mix of authentic and fusion dishes to the eatery. The tour served cauliflower cakes, hummus, falafel and chicken kebabs alongside wine pairings provided by Discover Wine.

PROJECT PUB

Run by the same owners as Tapastre downstairs, this restaurant is a “rotating brewpub.” Each month, they select a different brewery to do a tap takeover and design a food menu to be paired with the beers. The tour provided beer pairings, items from their pickled veggie board, duck fat fries and pork belly bites.

The Brioneses spend much of their free time at RVCC. Taking after Kristi’s roots as a swimmer for Villanova University, on a typical summer morning, the Briones girls can be found at RVCC's Patriots Swim Team practice—They are proud of their undefeated season!—And even though it was David who played tennis for Fairfield University, nowadays it’s Kristi who is a regular on the RVCC tennis courts.

As a managing member at Brio Financial Group in Somerville, it’s convenient for David to take advantage of all the amenities RVCC has to offer. When asked how many times a week he plays golf, David grins sheepishly and says, “Maybe twice.”

Kristi raises her eyebrows, and Dylan quips back, “Dad, you play golf like every day!”

David laughs and shrugs. His body language suggesting that perhaps his family is keeping better track of his golf outings than he is.

“The golf course is amazing here. It is challenging for those who are really good but forgiving for those who aren’t,” David says.

BRIDGEWATER HAS ITS OWN FAMOUS ADAMS FAMILY, AND IT'S NOT MORTICIA AND GOMEZ! The Bridgewater Adams family consists of parents Jim and Joann, and their children, Kyle and Sara. And fully representing their namesake theme song: Their house is a museum, Where people come to see 'em.

They really are a scream— The Adams family!

Every October, Bridgewater's Adams family entertains thousands of visitors with their remarkable 13 Skeletons exhibit. The Halloween montages on their front lawn host as many as 13 skeletons engaging in various shenanigans.

“My wife and I used to decorate with typical fall decor," Jim says. "We used hay bales, corn stalks and pumpkins. Thirteen years ago, I decided I wanted to have a little fun and add some magic to our front lawn.”

Jim discovered a way to position seven pumpkins to create the illusion that they were supernaturally balancing on top of each other. From there, he developed the idea to stack skeletons as well.

Jim struggled to find the best placement for his skeletons, so at night he would go out and tinker with the display, trying to perfect it. Being prominently located on Route 202/206, a school bus drove by daily, and one child noticed that the skeletons were in new spots on the lawn every morning. She told her mother that she believed that the skeletons were alive and sneaking around at night. When word made its way back to Jim, an idea was born.

"What if the skeletons really did come to life at night?"

The skeletons now emerge from the ground one by one for 13 days and run amok on the lawn until Halloween. Each day, the skeletons appear in new positions, acting out a story.

Last year, Jim elevated the display even more by creating an actual mine on his front lawn for visitors to walk through. Trick or treaters were tasked with entering the mine to rescue the skeletons that were “trapped underground.”

Throughout the years, multiple people have commented to Jim that the display would make for a great children’s book, which sparked yet another idea. Maybe they could share the magic of 13 Skeletons with families everywhere?

Cowritten by Jim and Joann and illustrated by Colleen Finn, 13 Skeletons Circus of the Night, is based on one of their most popular displays. The book tells the story of a boy’s dream of an unusual skeleton circus.

Debuting Oct. 1, this year’s theme is Bedtime Stories. You can drive past the Adams family's home, located at 948 Route 202/206, daily in October to see what kind of mischief these devilish skeletons are getting themselves into.
