ARTS & C U LT U R E COLLECTIVE WHY WAS THE ARTS & CULTURE COLLECTIVE OF YORBA LINDA CREATED? Yorba Linda is a beautiful, mature city with a notable lack of public art. Our goal is to create public art pieces by involving the public in the creative process.

The Board of Directors Angela Waterman, Sandee Van Oyen, Mercedes Galante, and Terrie Medeiros share four basic ideals: the value of creative expression in developing the individual and society, the urgent need to repurpose, reuse, and recycle man-made elements, the importance of art education and exposure to art, and the value of community engagement.

WHAT PROJECTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED

BY THE COLLECTIVE? We’ve facilitated the creation of several mosaic tables and a planter, all of which are displayed on Main Street. We plan a new mosaic every June and bring all the materials out to the Celebrate Yorba Linda Street Fair where the community can work on it together. We also bring materials for a second, temporary installation. One year, it was a used-pallet sculpture that the public wrapped with yarn. Another year, we folded origami cranes to hang in the trees for the summer. Last June, we worked with Yorba Linda artist Jamie Kough to

fessional artists are paid for their work. They are highly trained professionals who spent many years in school studying other artists and perfecting their own techniques. We try to reuse and repurpose materials, but supplies must be purchased. All monetary donations go to pay our artists a small stipend for their work and to buy supplies. The Arts & Culture Collective of Yorba Linda (A&CC) is a 501 (c3) under the Hill of Hope umbrella of charities. AT FUTURES ACADEMY IN ANAHEIM HILLS, STUDENTS ARE LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM. Some come for the flexible scheduling, while others find their learning style doesn’t work well in a crowded classroom.

Futures Academy is an accredited, private college-prep school where 6-12 grade students find their strengths and excel in a highly personalized setting.

With our 1:1 instruction model, children learn to think critically by asking questions and refining and clarifying their answers. Our teachers get to know students, identify their strengths and where they struggle while tailoring instruction to their individual needs and personal interests. Teacher Brian Thompson says, “The 1:1 format is extremely empowering to me as an educator. It allows me to give every student my full attention. I can tailor my instruction to each student’s individual needs, scaffold their weaknesses. and nurture their strengths.”

Futures Academy students come from varying backgrounds. Some struggle with academia, learning challenges or social anxiety while others are athletes and actors who find the flexible scheduling options beneficial. Some need accelerated learning that they are not finding in the traditional classroom, but all value the 1:1 instruction to learn at their capacity and pace. Part of our commitment at Futures Academy is to nurture each student and encourage them to believe in themselves.

Teachers also serve as mentors to students, helping them set goals and plan for the future. We teach optimism, grit and a growth mindset alongside core academics. Futures Academy offers a nurturing, bully-free environment. Our campus culture is welcoming and our students and staff make sure everyone is known and belongs. When not in class, students have opportunities to socialize together through clubs, field trips and activities.
