When a doctor sees 30-40 patients a day, it’s more difficult to know each of them on a truly personal level. At PartnerMD, our concierge primary care doctors see far fewer patients than a traditional practice, allowing significant time for listening, understanding and a respectful two-way conversation. This is how real partnerships are built, leading to more personalized care and lifelong advocacy for you and your health. Get to know us better at partnerMD.com.

GOING GREEN AT HOME

HARRING CONSTRUCTION’S CUSTOM HOMES ARE BEAUTIFUL, COMFORTABLE, ENERGY EFFICIENT – AND FULL OF IDEAS TO HELP IMPROVE YOURS

ARTICLE MARY ELLIN ARCH

PHOTOGRAPHY RENE SCOTT-TOUR VA HOMES

YOU CAN’T TELL JUST BY LOOKING, BUT JEREMY HARRING’S NEW HOME IS A MODEL OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY. Thanks to Harring’s conscientious craftsmanship, the newest Harring Construction home (17901 Pine Canyon Trail, Magnolia Green) is loaded with features that make it 31% more efficient than the norm. It boasts meticulous applications of caulking, R-15 insulation (not the usual R-13), totally insulated and drywalled garages, and ventless, “conditioned” crawl spaces built to resist moisture and mold that can damage indoor air. Homes constructed to Harring’s exacting standards lose as little as 6 percent of conditioned air to leakage (typically, that leakage is 30%) and qualify as “green certified” as measured against the official HERS Rater (https://www.hersindex.com/ hers-index/interactive-hersindex/). “We do more than what the code asks us to do,” Harring says. But even older homes can be made more energy efficient. Much of what’s in Harring’s green home can be duplicated in yours.

5 EASY ECO HOME FEATURES

NEST THERMOSTAT: A standard feature in Harring’s homes, programmable Nests can save 10-15% on heating and cooling costs. LOW-E WINDOWS: Harring homes feature low-emittance windows, double-paned and insulated with argon gas to keep out unwanted sun, heat and cold. LED LIGHTING: Also standard in Harring

homes. Now dimmable, and available in different shades, LEDs provide soft yet bright light with an output as low as 4 watts. LOW-FLUSH TOILETS: A typical commode uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush; Harring uses 1-gallon toilets. DIY: Install window shades and awnings to block sun, heat and cold. Plant shade trees to shield from sun and wind. Ceiling fans can cool indoor air; reverse the spin to push warm air down from vaulted ceilings during winter. Replace traditional bulbs with LEDs and shower heads with new versions that use less water but provide the same pressure.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR GARAGE Ever notice how your garage seems to be a different temperature from the rest of your house? In Harring homes, garage doors are insulated and all walls finished with insulation and drywall. In a typical home, exterior garage walls may lack insulation and finishing materials and allow cold air in. PICK THE RIGHT WATER HEATER Every home has a water heater, and traditional types are energy wasters, heating water that may not be needed for hours. A tankless device heats on demand and doesn’t waste energy warming water and then maintaining the temperature. LITTLE THINGS MEAN A LOT “We take a whole-house systems approach,” said Harring. “But anyone can increase their home’s energy efficiency by making small changes over time.” Harring Construction: www.harringconstruction.com The Yeatman Group of Long & Foster Real Estate (selling agent): www.theyeatmangroup.com Tankless water heater 20

innovative design, crafted with creativity ELITE WINDOWS VOWS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR CUSTOMERS, THE COMMUNITY AND THE PLANET

WHEN LAUREN UTSCH WORKS ON A HOME DESIGN PROJECT, SHE ALWAYS KNOWS WHERE SHE’LL GO FOR WINDOWS: ELITE WINDOW SOLUTIONS. “They are a custom window fabrication company right here in our hometown,” said Utsch, of Lauren Christopher Designs in Midlothian. “I trust him, his team, and their product. I know he will go above and beyond to make my clients happy.” Every Elite window is custom crafted out of a shop at 1720 Douthit Ct. in Powhatan County, just a few miles west of Westchester Commons. They are individually designed by Andrew Stockton, who founded Elite Window Solutions 15 years ago after more than 35 years of business as Stockton Construction specializing in custom homes. Sheer frustration with national window brands inspired Stockton to craft his own. “We used to buy directly from national manufacturers, and they would find reasons not to honor their warranties,” said Stockton, who studied architectural engineering. “Quality was not up to our standards, and the ratings did not meet Energy Star. We knew we could do better.” Every Elite product is made and sold from a 3,500-square-foot building off Anderson ARTICLE MARY ELLIN ARCH PHOTOGRAPHY ISABELLE HESCH 22

Highway, and marketed throughout Virginia and North Carolina. “Suppliers tell us we're the most efficient window and door manufacturer per square foot in the country,” Stockton says. “Most of the major manufacturers work out of 100,000-square-foot spaces.” Elite windows are vinyl and come in every shape and size: double-hung, slider, casement, awning, picture, and special shapes including hub and spoke, half round, colonial, full round, colonial hexagon and triangle. Various grid patterns are offered. Utsch encourages her clients to visit Elite’s showroom and meet Stockton. “He always has great ideas and works through any design challenges with us,” she says. Black windows with white exterior trim

“He is always up for the challenge of creating a design to fit any space.” “We listen to our customers better than anyone, and we give them what they’re asking for,” Stockton says. “People tell us they’ve been told it can’t be done, and we figure out how to do it. When a builder comes to me, I never say ‘no.’ It’s always, ‘How can I deliver what he’s asking for?’” Builders concur. Danny Sowers of River City Custom Homes says Stockton is “always willing to listen to us and bring options to the table that we may not have seen before.” A major focus is black exterior trim. “We’re doing half of our homes in black windows,” said Isabelle Hesch, an Elite sales coordinator. Utsch agrees the trend is very popular now. “Black window exteriors can really change the look of a house,” she said. “They really drive the modern look.” Many customers choose a black exterior finish but a white interior finish to avoid detracting from window treatments, Utsch added. Elite also is known for glass doors, and patio doors are a big seller, said Hesch. Other Elite products include entry doors, insulated vinyl siding, railings and gutters. All Elite windows are energy efficient – double and triple “low-E” (low-emitting) and filled with argon gas to make them resistant to thermal transference of outside heat and cold. All meet 2025 Energy Star requirements. For the future, Stockton wants to add automation and robotics, and innovate products. “We’re looking into invisible glass,” he said. “We’re getting into European styling, more modern windows, and interior walls made of glass.” http://www.elitewindowsolutionsllc.com/

let the

sun shine in! WOULD YOU LIKE LOWER ELECTRIC BILLS? HOW ABOUT CREDITS FROM YOUR UTILITY? DOES CARING FOR THE PLANET APPEAL TO YOU? Brandon Fuller wants to talk with you. Fuller is operations manager for Sunlight Solar, a new local company helping Central Virginians go solar at home. Every Sunlight Solar customer receives a customized, no-cost, zero-risk property analysis to assess the potential benefits of solar. Financing options include zero down and

zero out-of-pocket, and the company offers a generous warranty and tax incentive information. “We make going solar easy,” Fuller said. “We’ll handle all the permitting. You just sign and save.” While Fuller and owner Dominick Barlow just opened Sunlight Solar off Route 288 at Chester Road, they

are local to Chesterfield County. The lifelong friends met at Matoaca Elementary and were always interested in owning a business. Initially, they went into home building separately – Fuller as a custom builder, Barlow as a hardscapes designer specializing in decks, pools, fencing and home additions. While working in these fields, Fuller and Barlow helped another friend explore solar as a means to grow his business, and based on their research decided to launch Sunlight Solar together.

An app gives real-time system performance info

Eric Kothe's rooftop solar panels

Eric Kothe is an enthusiastic customer. Sunlight Solar equipped Kothe’s 4,000-square-foot home in Mechanicsville with solar in December, and the results were immediate. “We haven’t seen a bill since we put in the system,” he said. “We’re burning 75 kilowatts [of solar power] a day.” He uses an app to track performance. For Kothe, a business owner, husband and father of two, the decision to go solar fit his energy-conscious, self-sufficient mindset – he drives a hybrid vehicle and installed a generator to protect his family from outages. “I’ve always been conscientious about energy,” he said. “You realize the world’s evolving, and how do you sustain a lifestyle and be mindful of the planet, and of costs?” Solar was the answer for Kothe. His wooded 13-acre spread includes a tree-free area for his house and pool with unobstructed southern exposure. Purchasing the solar system in late 2019 netted Kothe a 30% federal tax credit, which he plans to apply to his home-improvement loan, as well as relief from monthly electric bills that ranged from $200 to $400 per month. He pointed out that electricity costs will keep increasing, and climate trends indicate a continuing rise in temperatures. “The tax credit really makes the system seem like a no-brainer,” Kothe said.

Photovoltaic power source

“It’s worth every penny – and it just makes the house all that much more valuable.” Sunlight Solar installs systems in existing homes like Kothe’s, and partners with a custom builder based in Virginia Beach to install solar into new construction. The company can install solar panels on light commercial buildings such as warehouses and stores, as well CONTINUED >

Jeff Dietz, of Dietz Financial Services, feels strongly that most people are taking far too much needless market risk for too little reward, while also exposing too much of their future retirement income to taxes. Jeff can help you create a retirement plan that maximizes your tax-free income stream as opposed to having a fully taxable one. He can show you how to enjoy most of the gains of the stock market and bypass all of the losses. If you have college-bound children, he can show you how pay for that without sacrificing your retirement, keeping those assets out of view of financial aid applications, and even reducing the borrowing costs to a bare minimum. Your retirement could last 30+ years, so the time to plan is NOW! Jeff would love to be of service to you and the “future you.” Contact him today at 804-608-9775 or jeff@jeffdietzfinancial.com.
