Our go green theme continues with some incredible businesses in Berthoud. Approaching their eighty-third year of supporting water conservation in our community, Northern Water is taking sustainability one step further by helping homeowners and HOAs with irrigation technologies and low-water landscapes. We also highlight a family-owned antique emporium that is making an impact through reusing and recycling people’s junk. The gems found inside this store are truly one of a kind.

With people staying inside their homes and government regulations strictly limiting the amount of people in one area, our local small businesses are experiencing severe cuts in profit. At Loveland & South Lifestyle Magazine, we love our small businesses. We recognize them as the source of so much of our town’s ingenuity, creativity, and livelihood. When we have healed from this crisis, we want to be able to stand alongside our community and celebrate a victory from this hardship. Our neighbors need our help to weather the storm. According to one JPMorgan and Chase study, the average small business has enough cash on hand to keep running for 27 days. Vickey Bittner is the owner of Taste Local, one of the local businesses featured in this issue. Though they are faring better than she expected, they have had to cut back on employees and are only able to offer takeout and delivery. Vickey emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses all the time, but she says that it is especially important in times of crisis. “Small businesses are impacted more heavily by the slightest economic downturns because our profit margins are smaller,” she says. “It’s all question marks about how everything will go from here.”

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

#perfectingyourselfie, naturally PAMPER YOUR SKIN WHILE PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT

“YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.” We have all heard this age-old adage, but did you know this message extends to skincare as well? According to esthetician Kelly Wisniewski, owner and operator of Remedy Skin Studio in Berthoud, our overall health is dependent on far more than what we consume. “What we put in our body, whether it be via our mouth or our skin, is going to get absorbed in our system,” Kelly says. Kelly has independently operated Remedy for four years, but she’s been practicing her craft for 15 years in a wide variety of salons and clinics. She has a mission to promote health and works hard toward #PerfectingYourSelfie (her hashtag on social media). Take a peek at the list of ingredients on a traditional skincare product. It might shock you. Many products

contain

unpronounceable

chemicals

and preservatives, such as parabens and phthalates, common ingredients which, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), have been linked to hormonal and metabolic imbalances. Additionally, according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, artificially derived fragrances “can contain hormone disruptors and are among the top five allergens in the world. Furthermore, any harmful chemicals applied to the face and body will wash down the drain, into the groundwater, and back into our faucets. The Groundwater Foundation, an organization ARTICLE SKYE MARSH PHOTOGRAPHY FLOURISH BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY 12

Loveland & South Lifestyle | April 2020

that monitors the health of America’s water systems, finds personal care products to be a top threat: 80% of streams and 95% of groundwater sources are contaminated by pollutants found in sunscreens and body care products. This seeps into the water that 50% of the U.S. population eventually drinks, as well as impacting fish populations and other wildlife accessing these water sources. The Groundwater Foundation recommends avoiding “unnecessary ingredients, such as scents” and using “ingredients that are more likely to biodegrade harmlessly in the environment.” Switching to all-natural skincare might seem daunting, but it’s vital to skin health. “When you go to a more natural product line, it gives your skin a chance to breathe,” states Kelly. “This allows the skin to heal itself without the use of harsh chemicals.” One line she recommends is Sorella Apothecary, a sister-owned company that boasts their ingredients are “the best of both science and nature” (find these products at Remedy and sorellaapothecary.com). The EWG’s Skin Deep website also offers a searchable database where consumers can find safety ratings for any cosmetic ingredient alongside research-based natural skincare recommendations. You could also indulge in a botanically-based facial at Remedy, where Kelly will help you perfect your selfie. Because all products used are free of harsh ingredients and artificial scents, clients of all ages and stages are welcome. Kelly’s youngest client is eleven, and even pregnant women can indulge in select services without concern. Remedy offers a wide variety of tailor-made treatments ranging in length and intricacy. One highly recommended service is the “Not-so-Basic” facial, which includes cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and a nourishing mask. More advanced treatments include the microcurrent facial, which functions as a natural Botox replacement by tightening and toning the facial muscles with exercise. All appointments include a consultation and personalized regime to follow at home. Out-of-state and online consultations are also available. Remedy is located in the Gateway Natural Medicine Center at 1211 Lake Street, Suite 101 in Berthoud. To book an appointment, visit gatewaynaturalmedicine.com, or call (970)-532-2755. Sorella products start at $20 and go up, to around $90 max. Kelly’s services start at $85 for a 65-minute treatment and go up from there. The “Not-so-Basic” facial mentioned is $110.

BEING WISE WITH WATER

HOW NORTHERN WATER IN BERTHOUD IS TAKING ACTION

ARTICLE KATIE DREMONT PHOTOGRAPHY NORTHERN WATER AND FAIRWAY RIDGE HOA

AS THE WINTER MONTHS DRIFT AWAY, WE EAGERLY WELCOME THE SIGHTS, SMELLS, AND SOUNDS OF SPRING. Birds chirping, flowers blooming, and ice finally melting are all much awaited perks. The same melted ice that hindered movement in winter transforms into running water that breathes life into the earth during the spring. Running water’s journey begins deep in the snowpack of the Rocky Mountains. For northern Coloradans, we experience the breadth of this activity at the Colorado River headwaters west of the continental divide. After 83 years of supporting water conservation in our community, the team at Northern Water in Berthoud knows this spring journey all too well. Northern Water was created in the early 20th century just after the devastating Great Depression and Dust Bowl in an effort to provide supplemental irrigation water to farmers in northern Colorado. This was accomplished through the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, an initiative that now collects and delivers more than 200,000 acre-feet of water each year. There is a small-scale replica of this amazing undertaking at the Northern Water C-BT Interpretive Area, a space just west of their headquarter building at 220 Water Avenue in Berthoud. Today, Northern Water continues their mission of providing supplemental water to the region. This area serves over one million residents and includes over 600,000 acres of irrigated agriculture. The scope of Northern Waters’ reach is as diverse as it is large and includes quickly growing cities, towns, rural-domestic water districts, and industries. Northern Water prioritizes efforts to equip urban water users with the knowledge necessary to maintain water efficiency. Frank Kinder 16

Loveland & South Lifestyle | April 2020

Over half of the water used by Colorado homeowners is consumed by gardens and the landscaping industry. With conservation in mind, Northern Water is taking action by educating the public through their Conservation Gardens. These gardens offer examples of native grasses, irrigation technologies, and low-water landscapes. Low-water landscapes entail the usage of water-wise plants and mulches, as well as irrigation efficient design and maintenance. The best part is that beauty is never sacrificed in the name of conservation. Northern Water helps homeowner associations all throughout northern Colorado. Through Northern Water’s collaborative Water Efficient Landscape Grant Program, over $100,000 was awarded in 2019 to local governments and HOAs. Their aim was to upgrade irrigation systems and incorporate native grasses into local landscapes. Northern Water offers landscape consultations, irrigation audits, and garden tours to the public. If you would like to apply for a grant or receive more information on water conservation, visit northernwater.org.

Her hats have been displayed at the Denver Museum of Natural History and Science, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Royal Ascot Racecourse in England, and on Broadway. She hung up her own hat from competition after she won an Employee’s Choice and Judge’s Choice award. “It’s always best to quit while you’re ahead,” she jokes. Not only does Cynthia Lee produce award winning masterpieces, she and her husband make their own hat blocks (the mechanism used to shape hats) from recycled materials. The phrase, “Do it yourself, or make do,” has always inspired Cynthia Lee’s motivated attitude. To this day, she still uses repurposed water pressure tanks, pots, and pans to create her own hat shapes. By doing this, she did not have to invest hundreds of dollars in individual hat blocks. “I’ve never created the same hat twice. I’m constantly pulling inspiration from everywhere, including nature,” Cynthia Lee says. Cynthia Lee created hats inspired by rhubarb plants and the landing patterns of birds. Two years later and their business has expanded tremendously. They strip wire, dispose of tires, mattresses, televisions, and paint to make sure that even the most difficult-to-recycle items go through the proper disposal procedure. They do not accept donations, but they do have vendor booths for rent where local sellers can rent space to sell their own goods. Their next step? To acquire more trucks so they can increase their ability to haul items and to educate local business owners about how they can make their own operations more sustainable. Mr. Thrift is located at 349 Massachusetts Avenue in Berthoud. For more information, visit their website at www.mrthrift.net or stop by the store to meet the Wasson family.

HOW IT WORKS PICK UP: A Junk King team is sent out on location upon the client’s request. INTAKE: Depending on the nature of the pickup, any household items are brought to the Fourth and Massachusetts location to be sorted. SORTING: Household items take up the majority of the space. However, they also sell electronics and raw materials like wire, dispose of mattresses, and take any items they prefer not to sell to Habitat for Humanity. CLEANING: Items in good condition are cleaned and placed on the store floor as quickly as possible. If possible, broken items are fixed and refurbished. SALES FLOOR: Tools are sorted and priced accordingly, along with the gardening and outdoor living goods. Like many furniture stores, most of MR. Thrift’s space is organized into several different rooms staged like kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, etcetera.

MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER
