#NORTHWESTBERGENSTRONG DEAR NORTHWEST BERGEN LIFESTYLE FAMILY, As I sit here today, (April 20th) in my “home” office, writing my monthly publisher letter, I am passionately trying to come up with one word which encompasses this unprecedented time in our history. I believe that I am not alone with my thoughts and conclusion; the word is COMMUNITY. Defined by Merriam-Webster, a community is “a unified body of individuals: such as

the people with common interests living in a particular area.” I believe that this traditional meaning is missing the heart and soul of my feelings and experiences during the past six weeks. To me, community is a group of people that deeply care about each other and feel that they absolutely belong together. It is truly incredible, but not surprising, how the residents and businesses of Northwest Bergen have embraced this difficult and complicated time in our lives. Our restaurants have adapted to make deliveries and offer contactless curbside pickups. Our grocery stores have modified their hours, changed aisle directions, reconfigured displays, and put in place new measures to ensure the safety of staff and shoppers. Our residents have done their part to support our local businesses by ordering online, purchasing gift cards, and posting positive reviews on social media. This is how I view community.

A FATHER'S DAY SALUTE
HOW DID THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS? The Barn lost over 50% of its business and we had to cut back to delivery and take-out only. It’s a difficult position to be in because I have staff members who are dependent on the business for their income.
eli batin WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO HELP?
We received an order from an elderly customer who was isolated at home and was hoping we could deliver to her. After receiving such a heartfelt ask, we added a few rolls of toilet paper in case she was unable to get to the store. She thanked me endlessly. It was rewarding to see how a small gesture goes a long way. I decided to do the same for other elderly individuals who are homebound or financially limited with assistance from individuals who supported us by volunteering to deliver meals and contributing financially. WHAT DOES BUSINESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU, MOVING FORWARD? We may have to limit the number of dine-in customers and use more disposable items. Staff may have to wear masks and gloves while serving. However, we are committed to adapting in order to keep the food scene alive. I know that we will get back to “business as usual” someday. We’re looking forward to once again gathering inside our old Barn with friends and creating new memories.

COMMODITIES TRADER/TRIATHLETE/MARATHONER OAKLAND HOW WERE YOU AFFECTED BY BOTH 9/11 AND COVID-19? I was working near Ground Zero in 2001. Because of the airborne toxins, I was diagnosed with a related cancer. After multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, I am now in full remission, but the fear of cancer always exists. When I tested positive for COVID-19, I spent a week in the hospital. It was a nightmare--these illnesses changed my life forever. I now cherish each day and try not to take anything for granted. Two near-death experiences in two years will do that to you! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS IN SHARING AWARENESS OF YOUR EXPERIENCES? In 2018 I was diagnosed with male breast cancer. This is very rare for men, but there was a cluster of cases near Ground Zero. I went public with media interviews to urge men who worked or lived there to get checked. I was just trying to do my part to help. Upon recovering from the coronavirus, I wanted those who were sick to understand that you can get through it and to focus on the positive rather than the negative, and to continue social distancing. We are all in this together, and we will win this battle. HOW ARE YOU “GETTING BACK TO NORMAL”? I had registered for an Ironman 70.3 and an Ironman 140.6 this year. Unfortunately, the 70.3 has been postponed and most likely the 140.6 will be too. Because of the coronavirus, my training has been reduced to just walking. I hope to be able to get back on track and compete in a sprint triathlon or a half marathon later in the year.

FOUNDATION HAD TO QUICKLY TRANSITION MOST OF HIS DEPARTMENT’S GOALS AND STRATEGIES WHEN THE COVID19 PANDEMIC HIT. David has been in his position for three years at the Foundation, the non-profit arm of the Valley Health System. Born in Ridgewood, he spent a good portion of his professional career in higher education, working in the Development departments of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Carnegie Mellon University before coming back to his roots in Ridgewood at The Valley Hospital Foundation. “It was a nice ‘homecoming’ at a time when Valley announced they were going to construct a new hospital in Paramus,” he said. Little did he know what the importance of a new facility would be…now more than ever. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation had to rapidly switch gears from their strategic fundraising plan to creating and managing the execution of Valley Hospital’s community support programs addressing emergent coronavirus issues. The Foundation helped mobilize community outreach to help Valley procure donations of personal protection equipment (PPE) and food for the frontline staff. As of this writing, Valley has received over 12,000 meals thanks to the generous donations of local restaurants and community fundraising efforts to purchase and deliver meals for staff. “Healthcare workers really appreciated seeing supportive messages on lawn signs en route to the hospital, not to mention the applause, sirens, horns, and cheers in their honor,” says David. The Foundation ran a campaign for volunteers to help make masks for frontline clinicians with kits complete with the materials to be taken home, assembled, and returned to the hospital. They have received thousands of donated masks in return. As a “thank you,” Valley offered free kits which included all of the raw materials needed for people to make masks at home for their families. “We kept adding opportunities for the community to help each week on our website--and the response has been terrific,” states David. 16

“ We k e p t a d d i n g opportunities for the community to help each week on our website-and the response has b e e n t e r r i f i c .”
“As of today, we’ve surpassed 1300 donors to our emergency COVID-19 Response Effort supporting our frontline.” Our staff was concerned with going home and spreading the virus through their shoes, so the Foundation sponsored a very successful drive for Crocs® shoes, which can be easily cleaned of contamination upon returning home. The Foundation also established a drop-off location for supporters to leave donations of N95 masks, surgical masks, isolation gowns, and gloves. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office donated two dozen iPad tablets to facilitate communication for families while their loved ones are in the hospital. These tablets also allow for virtual visits with doctors or nurses in order to conserve PPE, which needs to be put on every time a healthcare worker enters a room with a COVID-19 patient inside. Other initiatives included arranging for the donation of COVID-19 serum from recovering individuals. Eligible patients volunteered to donate blood, which would be screened for the presence of the disease’s antibodies. The antibody-rich plasma would then be transferred into COVID-19 patients whose conditions ARTICLE KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY JEAN TERMAN
