OPEN HOUSE

THE TIMOTHY HALE JR. HOUSE ON MAIN STREET IS ONE OF THE TOWN’S OLDEST STRUCTURES

AT H O M E W I T H H I S TO RY ARTICLE EILEEN M. MCNAMARA PHOTOGRAPHY CARRIE DRAGHI

WHEN THE COLONIST TIMOTHY HALE JR. BUILT HIS HOUSE HERE, MAIN STREET WAS JUST A DIRT PATH NEAR HIS FRONT DOOR, THE TOWN WAS CALLED GLASSENBURY AND THE UNITED STATES DIDN’T EVEN EXIST YET. The sprawling center-chimney Colonial was built in 1740. In the years since it’s seen a lot of changes outside its large, double front doors, including the Revolutionary War that Hale fought in. Inside, there have been modern improvements as well, including a kitchen addition in the 1970s.

12

Glastonbury Lifestyle | September 2020

It’s current owners, Marshall and Stacie Berdan, purchased the property in 2007 and have undertaken loving improvements to keep it as true to its historic roots as possible. During a recent tour of the home Stacie says she and her husband have always bought old homes because they are drawn to the architecture and uniqueness of such properties. They only make improvements that enhance the historic charm and character of their homes. In fact, they often undue modern improvements in the older homes they buy. “We’ve always approached it as a labor of love and preservation,” Stacie says. “We always keep the original character when we make changes, we don’t knock anything down and we’re not happy when we see homes where that’s happened.” While the Hale house isn’t as flashy as some of the other grand historic homes that line Main Street, it exudes a deep sense of history and old-world charm, from its locally quarried brownstone foundation to the peak of its three-story roof. ABBY KILGORE OF GLASTONBURY IS THE OWNER OF THE INSPIRED KITCHEN LLC. She has a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Paier College of Art in Hamden and has been a designer and project manager for hundreds of projects in Connecticut. "I pride myself in really understanding each client’s needs and desires so that I can deliver them a space that is above and beyond what they could have imagined. In 2017 she earned her Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD) accreditation from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. I am always looking to learn, keep up on trends, and grow personally and professionally. My family and I live in Glastonbury and are deeply rooted in the community. My husband, Jesse, and I are blessed with two great kids that keep us on our toes (Rebekah and Jacob) and we all enjoy the beauty that life has to offer. VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

THESE DAYS, WE’RE PROBABLY ALL ADOPTING A SIMILAR FASHION STYLE ARTICLE EILEEN M. MCNAMARA PHOTOGRAPHY CARRIE DRAGHI

Kimberly Moster, inside her boutique.

LIKE A LOT OF US, YOU'VE PROBABLY SETTLED INTO A PARTICULAR STYLE NICHE BY NOW, ONE THAT'S TRENDING HEAVILY CASUAL. Yoga pants and slacks, jeans with a good stretch and T-shirts have become a main staple for many of us. But go ahead and lean right into that fashion necessity. Women’s boutique owners tell me the casual trend is what their customers are seeking out these days and what they’ve been ordering from their vendors for their fall and winter fashion seasons. But just because it’s casual, doesn’t mean it has to be ordinary. When going to the supermarket possibly represents our biggest outing of the week lately, it’s a good time to break out a pretty blouse or a pair of colorful pumps to dress up your jeans or capri leggings. At Kimberly’s Boutique in West Hartford, owner Kimberly Moster says she started seeing the casual trend when she reopened after the recent quarantine. “It was a very busy time, but also a strange time," because of coronavirus. "Normally we sell a lot of work wear and evening wear but people are working from home now and they’re not going out much. People are wearing a lot more casual clothes.” Kimberly has owned her boutique at 968 Farmington Ave., in the heart of West Hartford Center, for 15 years. Before starting the business she worked in the retail fashion industry in New York City, where she honed her talent for curating upscale clothing lines. While she said the change in the retail environment forced her to seek out more casual lines from her vendors, that doesn’t mean sacrificing on the quality of the pieces. She prides herself on finding the best designer brands for her clientele.

“WE REALLY STRIVE TO FIND THINGS FOR WOMEN THAT ARE ON TREND AND TIMELESS.”

TREND SETTER (CONTINUED)

One of the mainstays of our style this fall is jeans.

“We find the vendors that are doing that. We really strive to find things for women that are on trend and timeless,” she says. This fall, she’s searching out the latest trends in denim to meet the casual clothing needs of her customers, including short and long-sleeved T-shirts, wide-legged cropped jeans - “Wide leg crops are back!” she says - designer sweatshirts and cashmere ponchos and scarves. At the Silver Dahlia boutique in Glastonbury owner Kim Reid says her fashion offerings have always leaned toward the casual so the recent trend of stay-at-home fashions fit nicely into the styles she offers. “We really try to focus on casual comfort and a good price point, things you can wear from day into night” Kim says. Her store carries a wide selection of T-shirts, maxi-dresses, jumpers and accessories from designers like Mud Pie, Natural Life, Southern Tide and Vineyard Vines, brands that appeal to all age groups. “We try to offer something for everyone, from the littles to the grands.”
