Equivalent to three hours worth of exercise in only 20 minutes.
Allows you to increase oxygen to all the cells of the body.
This technique is perfect for people who have difficulty eliminating problem areas through normal diet and exercise and will help you burn fat, reduce cellulite and boost your metabolism all without noninvasive surgery or side effects.
EMS training is low impact and scientifically proven to be 18 times more effective than a standard gym workout, burning over 550 calories. In just 20 minutes twice a week, you’ll see improved muscle tone and overall strength. For men, EMS increases testosterone levels while building lean muscle, and for women, balance estrogen and hormones tightening and toning all those flabby areas that drive you crazy.
EWOT is a method of training to increase oxygen to all the cells of the body by breathing in higher levels of oxygen during exercise. EWOT provides an immediate increase in strength, endurance and energy by increasing levels of oxygen in the blood, plasma and tissues by triggering an antiinflammatory response within two minutes. The effects are cumulative and increase metabolic energy.

ART MEETS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: AUSTIN ARTISTS EXPLORE NEW MEANING IN DATA Julia Morton’s art gallery in Austin is a cozy space and full of otherworldly art filled with shapes, scratches and swirls. Some the works are still images, while others are videos. At first glance, none of it seems to make any kind of sense. “People freeze. They’re mesmerized. They literally won’t move,” Morton said. “It’s like they have to look, and from what I’ve been told, get their bearings.” Morton’s work is part of a budding art form — one that uses artificial intelligence to generate images and visuals. Dubbed generative art, the works are created through non-human systems, such as computers. Artists have used algorithms and computers to generate art as early as the 1950s. University of Texas art history professor Taylor Bradley said the infusion of AI into the generative art genre is a relatively new development. The added element of unpredictability, Beira said, is what makes AI-generated art exciting for him. Beira said he hopes his art can help people gain a better understanding of human consciousness, and in the process, themselves. Statesman by Hojun Choi

HEALING IS AN ART AUSTIN'S PREMIERE INTEGRATIVE BODYWORK PRACTICE USES THE MOST CUTTING-EDGE ELECTROTHERAPY TO RELIEVE PAIN AND OTHER CONDITIONS
ART CAN BE DESCRIBED UNDER MANY PRETENSES, AND YET ONLY THE HUMAN BODY CAN FEEL THE TRUE INTENTIONS OF WHY ART TRULY EXISTS IN THIS WORLD. Art evokes emotion and impacts people in a progressive way, while allowing the artist to choose the medium to do this through. Summer Van Engen displays her art through her unique and advanced bodywork she performs at her local business she owns called Art & Science Healing in south Austin. Dr. Summer initially went to chiropractic school because it just made sense to her she says. She was interested in healthcare, but extremely uninterested in traditional medicine. It seemed like there was enough of that available and still, no one was getting any healthier. She grew up in a small town where traditional American medicine and chiropractic were really the only forms of healthcare. She had been told since she was 12 that there was something special about her touch and around the same time she had become aware of this as well. Chiropractic school was actually a rude awakening where she learned all the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the body, but she was taught only to treat back, neck, and other minor joint or nerve issues. She started studying acupuncture at that point in order to learn the things she wanted to learn in the first place - digestive, emotional, improving energy levels, and improving the immune system. 12
Austin Life | February 2020
ARTICLE ROSLYN BOND | PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON MEDRANO
She stated that her acupuncture classes helped develop her ability to “see the points that needed treating, and it was where she first realized she could feel tiny changes in heat coming off the body. She graduated first in her doctoral class with a certification that also allowed her to practice acupuncture. CONTINUED >

Dr. Summer’s specialty is helping people with the simple (not so simple) things like migraines, TMJ, chronic neck/back pain, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, etc. as well as complicated, chronic, neurological or digestive problems. She stated, “I love having sessions sometimes when a person just wants to get really chill, turn into jelly, and then get all put back together with better alignment and energy.” She now uses cutting-edge electrotherapy, Advanced Massage Techniques, Chiropractic, and Craniosacral to heal her clients. One technology she uses is a tiny electrical device meant to rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkles. It’s supposed to be microcurrent (electricity in the range of one millionth of an ampere). She learned about microcurrent from her acupuncture instructor and a book he recommended - The Body Electric by Robert Becker. It’s still one of her favorite books she says. Robert Becker was an orthopedic surgeon, who in the 50s and 60s was doing research on wound healing. Dr. Summer stated that the theory was if we could figure out what makes a salamander regenerate its missing limb, we might be able 14
Austin Life | February 2020
to recreate that in humans. Using microcurrent as a signal, he could make a frog regenerate an amputated limb. It’s less successful in humans, but powerful nonetheless. There are microcurrent devices on the market for use in acupuncture, wound healing, bone healing, pain control, and esthetics, but Dr. Summer says there are fakes on the market. Her deep Google dive kept bringing up other energy medicine modalities some of which she had also incorporated into her own practice called Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM). Dr. Summer stated that FSM is FDA approved to treat pain. Clinically, it has tremendous impact throughout the body and is a great adjunct to many other therapies. She stated that central pain syndrome is an issue when the middle of the brain gets so inflamed that it causes constant pain. Even narcotics sometimes can’t reduce that pain, but FSM does. It relieves pain from old scarring, injuries to the nervous system, torn tissues, trauma, and even unresolved emotions. She feels rewarded by watching her client’s reactions when their pain is suddenly gone. she recently worked on a 5 year old case of shingles. As soon as she turned on the first machine, her client’s pain was gone. She stated her client was confused. That’s a normal reaction when an old pain goes away that past says Dr. Summer. “People blink and their eyes search the room. It’s funny because they are actually looking for the pain.” Her comprehensive approach restores order and removes stress to get her clients out of pain and performing at their best with fewer visits. THE MASTER'S ALTIER AN INSIDE LOOK INTO LOCAL ARTIST MOYO OYELOLA’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE ART SCENE IN AUSTIN
MOYO OYELOLA MOYO OYELOLA IS A LOCAL NIGERIAN-AMERICAN CREATIVE ARTIST LIVING IN AUSTIN FOR 24 YEARS. Oyelola is a holistic artist combining photography, construction and activism. All his passions are on display in his east Austin studio. Oyelola’s essence captivates viewers and visitors, as it captivated us. Upon walking into his studio laid a couple of mini stacked chairs. They are from Oyelola’s project, Open Chair ATX. The project captures intimate portraits illustrating the resolve of Black Austin, an invitation to accredit and vocalize in all circumstances. The chairs represent a welcoming platform to sit in with, express, and join the minority experience within the East Austin community. Instead of adopting overly-broad ideas, Oyelola seeks justice by fostering specific conversations with a specific demographic. This project works ARTICLE MARS IRUEGAS & ROSLYN BOND

What drew us in was his genuine vulnerability and peak of curiosity that felt relatable. A simple act of questioning something, anything that leads to creation, and just by gaining knowledge from that subject alone. With the magic comes the struggle, the struggle to create, the passion that comes within the pain of being misunderstood by peers and at times family. There is so much that is behind the scenes that contributes to the final masterpiece. Oyelola’s roots, interests, and struggles has led him to the evolution of whom he has become. Oyelola is from Nigeria, more specifically from Abeokuta. Abeokuta, meaning under the rocks, tells a story of his ancestors at time of war taking refuge underneath these specific rocks. The town itself is very artsy, its known for textile and indigo dyes, known as Adrae. He spoke of his story of growing up and becoming more connected to his culture and origin along the way, and even stated that there were meanings behind the clothes in which were made in his culture that contained specific colors and patterns of the dyes. He saw the beauty in the many layers and felt empowerment with true cultural representation. Moving to the states at an early age, not fitting in with his peers by his image alone, and leading with curiosity empowered Oyelola to tell his story and give that helping hand to others who can relate. Some of Oyelola’s most profound mantras state, “You don’t have to be from another country to be misunderstood; yet, rather lead with your why;” “To appreciate and know one’s self is to take a risk and to challenge yourself;” “To put yourself in an uncomfortable situation is to dive into what is and who you are doing it for is the ultimate challenge for one’s self.” 20

AR TIST ’ S PALE T TE (CONTINUED)
ART IS AN ESCAPE FROM REALITY.” Art is an escape from reality. It is a form to live out your imagination and express it to the world. It’s a divine sense of freedom that you can create to be able to portray this vivid dream while mixing the two worlds. A way to break the mold and have sensuality without using any words. A renaissance of fantasy that is swayed with emotion and intensity of spiritual creation. A roller coaster of the unknown, you take a chance on yourself only to foresee the outcome of your success. It’s challenging but worth the process because it’s all or nothing for you. What is life without this eloquent journey is definitely a question to ask yourself. A movement that chooses to reign from the society within. It doesn’t take much but to be sound, to listen and be a part of the community wholeheartedly. Oyelola encourages all to come together and creates unity through his creative energy and his legacy will continue to live on! 22

wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.
Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
