Serve Day Weekend During Cape Christian’s annual “Serve Day Weekend” in early March, the church supported Lee BIA Builders Care by heading into the community and serving SWFL through practical acts of kindness. Neighbors and Lee County police officers joined Cape Christian in identifying local homeowners, schools, and businesses in need of improvements, landscaping clean-up and upgrades, exterior painting and general upkeep projects.

Valerie’s House Launches Virtual Grief Support Groups Due to the pandemic restrictions, Valerie’s House families were not able to meet in-person for their regularly scheduled grief support group sessions. Staff members worked remotely to keep families connected during this uncertain time by holding virtual meetings. JUST TO SEE YOU SMILE DR. JARED FORD CARING FOR YOUR ORAL HEALTH ARTICLE AUBREY SEWELL | PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMITTED BY FORD SIGNATURE DENTISTRY

Dr. Ford and family

YOUR SMILE IS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT PEOPLE NOTICE ABOUT YOU. It’s actually one of the features most remembered by people after having met someone for the first time. Having an incredible smile can benefit you in many ways and many people strive to attain those picture-perfect pearly whites, but equally important, if not more so, is the health of your mouth. Dr. Jared Ford of Ford Signature Dentistry is one of the leading dentists for comprehensive cosmetic and restorative dentistry in Fort Myers and he strives to provide his patients with exactly what they need, from routine and preventative care to smile makeovers, to have healthy, confident smiles they love. The goal of Ford Signature Dentistry is to be the last dentist patients ever see by striving to provide both the best that dentistry has to offer and results that leave their patients completely satisfied and feeling like family. Dr. Ford has been pursuing this goal since 2013 when he started his practice after taking over for a retiring doctor. After four years in that office, he relocated his practice to his current site at 7630 Cambridge Manor Pl, Fort Myers.

On top of the options chosen from the customized menu to create an atmosphere of relaxation, nitrous sedation is used in certain situations to help calm the patient. For the most part, Dr. Ford’s practice is geared towards treating adults. He likes to focus on complete dental care with an emphasis on cosmetics because that can have such a great impact on peoples’ lives. As people age, their teeth can discolor and get worn down and he loves having the ability to bring back someone’s youthful look by changing their smile, which in many cases takes off years. Dentistry is his art; he works with his hands to create masterpieces. Even though teeth may not seem very artistic, seeing some of his before and after cases will change your mind. Kent is an ongoing case and probably one of Dr.

Carole's After

Ford’s favorites. Kent never really thought about how much a smile could change him until later in life. In an ideal world, orthodontics would have been the best treatment, but Kent was trying to avoid that route. After evaluating him, Dr. Ford was able to test drive his smile through position planning before even one of his teeth was touched. From the moment he was shown what the outcome could be with Dr. Ford’s plan of action, Kent was excited and ready to jump into his transformation. Currently, Kent’s top teeth are complete and his bottom teeth are still in process, but his happiness over the change he is seeing in the mirror assures Dr. Ford of the difference he is making in people’s lives. Another patient Dr. Ford worked with was Carole. She sought his help because she was dissatisfied with her smile, the way it had changed with age, losing its youthfulness and attractiveness. She stated, “I was getting to the point where I wasn’t smiling. I was very conscious of when I talked to people. My teeth had changed, very yellowed, and I was having a lot of uncomfortable things happen as I was eating.” Dr. Ford began working with her, once again starting

BREWING A COMMUNITY 22

Fort Myers Lifestyle | June 2020

“BEING A BREWER IS A LABOR OF LOVE, AND THE WORK IS EXPONENTIALLY REWARDING,” SAYS CO-OWNER AND BREWER OF FORT MYERS BREWING COMPANY, ROB WHYTE. What started as a passionate homebrewing hobby in the early 90’s, has now become the areas’ first microbrewery business. Since their modest beginnings in 2013, FM Brewing has grown to a four-vessel, 30-barrel brew system that churns out draft beer for tasting, while an expanded packaging and distribution facility brings craft brews to local restaurants and supermarket chains. They proudly carry a signature line of award-winning flagship beers, in addition to seasonal brews and small batch specialties. Their brews have earned many awards, including golds at the Best Florida Beer Competition, a silver at the 2018 World Beer Cup and a bronze at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival. Fort Myers Brewing was even named “Best Large Brewery in Florida” in 2016. Rob’s typical day starts off working with his team to get production started. He helps check the brewing equipment and prep the canning line production. In addition to the taproom, their beers are poured at over 1,000 locations, including local restaurants, bars and retail outlets, so an important part of Rob’s day is to ensure all of the orders are ready for distribution. FM Brew is constantly developing

new beers, so much of the day is filled with brainstorming, inventing and tasting different brews, perfecting recipes their loyal customers will enjoy and planning for how they will bring these new products to the community. There are a lot of moving parts involved in this effort, and as the business has grown, they’ve brought together a great team of brewers and team members that contribute to every step of this process. In his “previous life,” Rob was a software developer so it’s quite normal to find Rob at a computer or in front of a new piece CONTINUED >

of equipment that he’s building or perfecting. He’s always tinkering – writing new software to help the brewing process, working on new ways to make their equipment more efficient, and even writing the software that drives their entire brew system. While operations have looked a bit different in recent months due to the pandemic, on a “regular” night, Rob and his wife Jen can be found at the brewery. Not only do they have a love for craft beer, they have a passion for cultivating community. They strive to create a homelike atmosphere for friends and family to gather together and a place for strangers to become friends. Their greatest point of pride besides providing beverages to please the palate of any beer-lover has been creating a fun space for their beloved community to share. With live music, food trucks and a hundred of their closest friends, it’s like a giant family- and pet-friendly!- tailgate party. They always like to say it’s “The best beer you will ever drink. In a parking lot.”
