FREE CPR CLASSES AT THE BRENTWOOD LIBRARY During the month of February, the Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department will be offering free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes at the Brentwood Library. CPR is a lifesaving technique that is useful in many emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's heart has stopped beating. The classes will be offered on February 7, 14, 21, and 28, beginning at 6:30pm. Each class will last approximately two hours and is geared toward those ages 16 and up. Classes will offer training on infant, child, and adult CPR. Participants will be taught “hands only” CPR (no mouth-tomouth breathing). This class will utilize the American Heart Association’s Friends & Family curriculum; therefore no CPR card will be issued. More information can be found on the American Heart Association’s website. Rachel began her work as a ceramicist almost eight years ago by simply agreeing to take a class with a friend. Her goal is to make “extremely functional items” all while staying within a color scheme of whites, blues and greens; “peaceful and beachy”. Looking at her pieces they have a delicate and elegant look most pottery pieces don’t evoke. Her pieces are pragmatic and even her business cards read to her pottery ideology; “handmade pottery for everyday use.” Like most truly talented artists when asked about how she plans her work, Rachel says she usually has an idea but in the end she has to “follow what the clay is doing.” Early in her pottery career Rachel was an artist at The Clay Lady’s Artist Co-op and Galleries at in Nashville which houses a very small number of evolving artists. Todd is a master pipe maker and has been pipe making for over 20 years and has trained almost every successful North American pipe maker. He got his artistic start with his father on his pre 1948 hot rods in high school. After he made a pipe for a friend on a whim Todd decided it was time to “learn how to make a pipe for real” and apprenticed all over the world spending some of his favorite time in Copenhagen. Todd shapes are influenced by Danish modernism, as well as the Japanese concept of “wabi-sabi,” often defined as the intersection of transience and imperfection. As Todd puts it, “symmetry is always the least interesting way to achieve balance.” One of Todd’s more unique pieces is owned by the Museum of Modern Art in its photogram form. It can be seen in rotating exhibits. Todd travels to Northern Italy to hand select his wood for the pipes, most often Briarwood, paying special attention to grain stroke. Grace’s talent is seemingly endless and extends far beyond her ability to control up to 30 hula hoops at one time. In an act she can control multiple hula hoops in conjunction with other awe-inspiring acts. ' M Y B AG M Y S T O RY ' AS A FORMER FOSTER PARENT, BRENTWOOD RESIDENT CARA FINGER REALIZED MANY HEART-BREAKING MOMENTS WERE HAPPENING WITH CHILDREN WHO UNEXPECTEDLY FACE FOSTER CARE. So, she decided to take steps to provide a gesture of comfort to those children, and found a new way to promote their self-worth and dignity. Last August, Cara launched a nonprofit called My Bag My Story to provide duffel bags and backpacks for children who are in foster care, giving them a personal, new way to store their belongings. “When we became foster parents, I saw children carrying all they possessed in plastic sacks. It steals a child’s self-respect when you give them a trash bag for the only things they have in life. Sometimes the only thing kids have control over is their stuff,” recalls Cara. “Children in foster care often have many issues working against them, due to no fault of their own. Something so small as having their own decent bag can go a long way,” she says. Cara knows deeply how meaningful small acts of kindness can be. As an infant, she was adopted and has lived a happy, secure life. Among her three children, two are adopted. “In our own backyard in Brentwood, people aren’t aware of the plights

They helped her with filing paperwork to become a nonprofit, establishing logistics for retail sales and developing public awareness.

Beth Stromatt will operate the new 3,071-square foot studio, which is the concept’s 33rd location. The studio was founded by 2008 Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay and longtime fitness executive Joe Culver. The company’s name comes from Mark Twain’s famous saying: ‘If you eat a live frog first thing each morning, nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.’ “Fitness is most people’s ‘frog,’ it’s what they procrastinate about the most. Eat the Frog Fitness members across the country that follow the prescribed personalized workout plan are achieving faster and longer-lasting results as opposed to what they realized with their former fitness routines,” Beth says. “We’re thrilled to bring the first Eat the Frog Fitness to Tennessee in Brentwood,” she adds. THE CENTER’S PROGRAMS DIVIDE INTO FOUR MAIN EFFORTS: + Flexcore sessions to improve power, agility, core muscle strength, posture, balance, stability, and coordination. + Strength sessions use Nubell weights, Alpha sandbags and the TRX training system to build strength and tone muscle while also improving bone density and promoting fat-free body mass. These sessions are designed to help participants get stronger, burn more calories, boost energy levels and prevent disease. + Cardio sessions expand workout capacities by using a combination of Concept II Rowers and Keiser Spin Bikes. This proprietary combination of low impact and high intensity equipment allows people to train harder and smarter. + Recovery exercises are encouraged and used after every session, using a combination of Trigger Point rollers and state-of-the-art stretching and recovery exercises—all with the goal of decreasing risks of injuries. The studio’s certified lead trainer is Megan Jox, who has 11 years of personal training experience. Megan has had a wide range of clients from high school athletes to immobile elderly. She also previously worked at Mercy Ministries in Nashville as the fitness manager. Additionally, Beth says they will have coach-lead classes at all the typical times, but also will offer virtual classes every hour to meet every schedule.

Founded by 2008 Olympic gold medal winning decathlete Bryan Clay and longtime fitness executive Joe Culver, Eat the Frog Fitness programs deliver highly personalized workouts, in a studio setting, 24 hours per day, seven days a week. They will offer live and virtual 24 hour classes.
