NOVEMBER 2019 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@lifestylepubs.com

I'm thankful for The Bahamas LAST YEAR, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF STAYING AT THE ABACO CLUB. THE HOSPITALITY WAS UNENDING AND THE CLEAR WARM WATER AND BLUE SKY EMBRACED ME. I WROTE TO MY FRIENDS THERE TO ASK HOW THEY ARE COPING AFTER HURRICANE DORIAN AND HOW WE CAN HELP AND THEY SENT THIS REPORT. Hurricane Dorian barreled through the islands of the Abacos and Grand Bahamas

Abaco Club on Winding Bay, weathered the storm relatively well with damage that is to be expected from torrential rains and high wind, including downed trees, flooding in low-lying areas, and missing roof shingles, siding, railings, etc. Our new Yacht Club and Marina slips also made it through without incident aside from minor damage. However, the same cannot be said for other parts of the Abacos which experienced widespread

We’ve taken critical action to provide immediate and ongoing assistance to the people of Great Abaco Island through the Abaco-Winding Bay Relief Fund, (501(c)3 status pending). All funds are being used to provide assistance specifically to the people of Abaco in the form of food, shelter, medical aid and supplies, and assistance in the island’s clean-up and rebuilding efforts. It will be a long time before Abaco is once again the tidy island paradise it was before Dorian, but there is a strong and shared desire on everyone’s part to bring a semblance of normalcy back to life on the island, and we’re making good progress to that end. PARIS” FROM A LOCAL GALLERY. Over the past 50 years, the couple grew their collection to include dozens of artworks by some of the most recognized artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Impressionist masters Claude Monet and PierreAuguste Renoir. In August 2019, the couple donated the entirety of this collection to their hometown museum, the High Museum of Art. The Shaheen gift is one of the most significant groups of European paintings ever to enter the High’s collection, rivaled only by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation donation in 1958, which established the

core of the High’s European art holdings. This marks the High’s first acquisition of paintings by renowned artists such as Henri Fantin-Latour, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Alfred Sisley. “It’s been a great blessing of our life together to build this collection and live with these incredible works,” said the Shaheens. “Given our love for this collection, and our love for this city, we knew the High was the best home for these paintings. We’re thrilled that Atlantans will enjoy them for generations to come.” This landmark donation reflects the couple’s love for the arts and continues the Shaheen’s support of philanthropic organizations across the Southeast. In 2007, Doris established the Shouky Shaheen Lecture series as a birthday gift to her husband which presents nationally and internationally recognized artists and scholar lectures through the University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art. The Shaheens have also made significant contributions to other institutions of higher learning and Piedmont Hospital, which established the Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center in 2004 through their generosity. In addition to their major gift of artworks, the couple have contributed generously to the High Museum as members since 1983 and as Friends of the Collection. In recognition of the gift, the High will establish the Doris and Shouky Shaheen Gallery in its Stent Family Wing, where the paintings will be on view starting later this year. “We are exceptionally grateful for the generosity of this landmark gift,” said Rand Suffolk, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., director of the High. “The Shaheen’s contribution singlehandedly elevates the quality of our European collection and will greatly enhance the visitor experience.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DORIS AND SHOUKY SHAHEEN COLLECTION INCLUDE: 1. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, “La bohemiènne à mandoline assise” (Seated Woman with Mandolin), (ca. 1860s–1870s) 2. Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926), Maisons au bord de la route (Houses Along the Road), 1885 3. Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903), Paysanne assise (Seated Peasant Woman), 1882 4. HAVE YOU HAD ANY LIGHT BULB MOMENTS OF CLARITY WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING/PHOTOGRAPHING CHILDREN THAT THE MERE MORTAL, NONPROF PHOTOGRAPHER COULD ADOPT? Yes, my easy, “mere mortal” tips: + Spend time connecting with your child to garner the most authentic expressions. Simply telling them to “Say Cheese” will give you exactly that - a cheesy smile. + If there’s anything “technical” you learn about photography, it should be the basic principles of light. Learn where the good light is. + Children have a very short window they will give you, so be quick, efficient, and do not drag the photographic moment. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR ARRANGING FURNITURE OR BACKGROUNDS FOR HOLIDAY PHOTOS TAKEN AT HOME? JUST AS THE BATH WATER IN MY SOAKING TUB WAS LOSING ITS STEAM, THE FIRE WAS CALLING FOR ANOTHER LOG. Climbing out of the deep tub and into a thirsty robe, I threw a few more logs into the big stone fireplaces in the bathroom and sitting room. Every window in the Lookout offered an expansive view over moody Upper Saranac Lake where a thick fog was hanging over the still water and green peaks of the Adirondacks beyond. It was the perfect afternoon for a fire. And a long hot bath with a book. An ideal day at The Point, a charming 11-room Relais & Chateaux property and former Great Camp of William Avery Rockefeller II located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Earlier in the day, I’d been out on the lake before the clouds rolled in, gliding across the glassy water in a gorgeous 33’ 1933 replica Hacker-Craft named “The Point of it All.” The hand-constructed mahogany speed boat was driven by Bradley, who grew up not far from The Point and couldn’t imagine working anywhere else in the world. He proudly pointed out other Adirondack Great Camps, built by captains of industry at the turn of the last century - sprawling compounds of dark native timber and stone lodges with bright trim scattered across deep green lawns dotted with pots of geraniums as big as a VW Bugs and proud boat houses full of vintage boats. Returning to the boat house at The Point, where one of five open bars sit stocked with snacks and local and international labels, I hopped in my own little craft, a Budsin Electric Boat to putter through the winding coves, watching for loons (they dive as deep as 250 feet and can stay underwater noshing for up to five minutes). Alone with my thoughts, eyes lifted to the darkening horizon, I felt the boat slow then remembered to switch to the second battery in time to slink back to shore through a veil of soft June rain. Everything about The Point is soft, like a favorite pair of well-made leather gloves. Thoughtful and elevated touches welcome even the most discerning guests at every turn. The game room bar is stocked with home made chips and cookies as well as gin and whisky from Lake Placid and beyond. The library offers old friends like Franny and Zooey and Anne Boleyn. CONTINUED >

TRAVEL DESTINATION

(CON TI N U ED)

The Point attracts travelers who have honed the art of vacationing, taking pride in turning off phones and turning to the person next to them to actually carry on a conversation.” Handmade wooden jigsaw puzzles from Stave taunt from a neat cabinet and a rather grand old billiard table stands sentinel, adorned with birch bark, antlers and a hand-painted landscape of some dreamy Adirondack lake (nearby, likely). If you must, you can watch television here (your room won’t have one) while you pretend the news or football score is more interesting than the view or the company. The Point attracts travelers who have honed the art of vacationing, taking pride in turning off phones and turning to the person next to them to actually carry on a conversation. Dinners are an affair, with black tie dress suggested two nights a week in keeping with the historic perspective of the Gilded Age as no fewer than seven courses are served across tables set for a large party of your newest “Friends in Residence” (their names will be printed on the nightly menu laid at your place, not to worry). One evening, china by Versace and crushed velvet tablecloths pair seamlessly, framing a meal created just that day by Chef Loïc Leperlier and his team. Among the more memorable dishes (though each and every one left an impression) were a delicate yellowtail snapper served with fava beans, avocados, wild rice, sea beans and preserved lemon and nilgai (antelope) with ramps foraged the day before during a woods walk, Swiss chard from the kitchen garden, morels and rhubarb. Meals can also be taken inside the kitchen at the chef’s table (my favorite), on the patio overlooking the lake, in your suite, on a boat, in the cozy lean-to up on the hill in front of a roaring fire (there’s bar there too) or most anywhere you like on the 75 private acres. Change after dinner and take a walk down to the lake, look up at the stars and listen. You may hear a loon calling, the crackle of a nearby bonfire, a champagne cork popping or nothing at all. That’s the point of it all. Getting there From Atlanta, the easiest way to get to The Point is to fly to Boston’s Logan International Airport, then transfer to Cape Air, the only commercial airline that flies directly to and from Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake (SLK) three times a day, year-round. This transfer out of Boston and is the only option to fly commercially to into Saranac Lake. Guests can also fly privately into SLK. Don’t rush! Stay overnight at the Ritz-Carlton Boson Common, a gorgeous hotel where you will have trouble getting out of the immense shower or tub. Luckily, the beds and linens are equally as luxe.
