LOCAL LIMELIGHT EXPERIENCE THE CHAPMAN DIFFERENCE
Exterior Home Design Specialists
ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF ROBINSON
BUILDING AND REMODELING PROJECTS THAT BLEND HOME INTERIORS WITH OUTDOOR-INFUSED FEATURES ARE IN FULL SWING AT CHAPMAN WINDOWS, DOORS AND SIDING, WHO ALSO SPECIALIZE IN STUCCO REMEDIATION. Oversize windows, doors with full or partial glass, and earthy wooden tones are taking center stage this year as 2020 trends--and Chapman teams are busy assisting homeowners with modernizing their personal spaces. As a local, family-owned and operated business located in West Chester and servicing the Philadelphia area, Chapman was founded by Mike Chapman and Jim Reddecliff in 1994, stemming from years of hands-on residential building. Brothers Mike and Mark Chapman now operate the company together, covering voluminous hours of measuring, pricing and working tirelessly to customize options for each client. As exterior house project specialists, the company’s team focuses on educating and empowering their customers while providing their version of stellar workmanship, exceptional service and quality products. Hundreds of ideas also abound within the company’s 4,000-square-foot showroom design center. Chapman’s difference is said to be all in the meticulous details of how they inform and inspire customers, along with providing full

services from design to post-installation, all within various budgets.
“We start by listening to you. We know your
project is a statement of your taste and personality, and each project is as unique as you are,” says Mark. “We’ll work with you to share our product knowledge so you feel confident in selecting products and services, with the features and benefits that best fit your wants and needs.” Mark says they also outline possibilities and
customizations that clarify decision-making. “We’ll give you a blueprint for success. At the end of this collaborative approach, we hope you’ll share the passion we have for our business,” he adds. Chapman can provide the full spectrum of
window types, including those that are double

hung, casement, sliding, awning, bow, bay, custom shapes, historically accurate treatments, traditional, modern and contemporary. They carry 10 to 12 window and door manufacturers, and numerous exterior siding manufacturers, so there are solid options at all price points and designs. They also provide free estimates. One new trend that Chapman teams are seeing in window frames is the use of earth-tones colors, such as browns, bronze and grays--all color palettes inspired by natural elements, such as sky, earth, water and plants. Pure black window frames also are in style for 2020, making a dramatic statement on any home. Dark window frames can yield a traditional or modern aesthetic to any architectural style. Solid walls of glass windows featuring simple, elegant frames also are being requested to provide unobstructed views while letting in as much light as possible.
doors Mike says Chapman experts like to “open the door to possibilities” in the company’s expansive showroom design center. “We have 100-plus doors to view, and through our hands-on experience and design programs, we can discuss and show customers hundreds more styles and doors we’ve installed,” he adds. Chapman teams realize the importance of making wonderful first impressions by selecting ‘the’ right doors. They can demonstrate what various door styles would truly look like before purchasing them, including changing the door colors or glass. Regarding doors, Chapman carries fiberglass, wood, steel, pivot, barn, carriage, traditional and contemporary styles. They also have sliding, swing, French, multi-slide, lift and slide or bi-fold patio doors. “Our customers feel empowered and motivated to make product and design decisions with confidence,” says Denise Maggitti Collins, Chapman marketing and business development manager. Through the click of a button, Chapman customers can view various styles and installations. Denise says the company’s specialists keep going until the exact look that customers want to achieve is found. Following this year’s design trends, she says they’re experiencing more requests for doors that allow more natural light into homes, as well as darker colored doors or those with specialty glass. Pivot doors also are popular now, she adds.

Chapman has certified window, door and siding installers, and an in-house paint department, who also handle custom painting and staining. They have the reputation of being available to customers, from start to finish. They also have an after-sale service department and a 10-year workmanship warranty for further customer care. Mike and Mark share that the company’s values revolve around honesty and integrity with a complete and passionate focus on customers and details, backed by nearly 30 years of experience in partnering with customers. They also assure that their projects and teams will “move at the speed of trust”--meaning, they pride themselves in taking the time that customers need, whether that be one or five meetings to discuss options. Indeed, Chapman’s A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau backs their claims of exceptional expertise, skills, products and services. They also were named as one of America’s Top 500 remodelers in Qualified Remodeler magazine. 610.431.8898 ChapmanWindowsDoors.com 16

As a self-dubbed “heartist,” Susan says she tends to see the universal symbol for love in clouds, flowers and the natural world--making April’s drumbeat around the annual Earth Day one of her favorite months for inspiring folks to get back outside to enjoy sunshine and life in general. Her mother and daughter also paint at the family’s compound in the Cloud Nine Studio, which she says is routinely visited by interior designers and buyers. The studio doubles at Susan’s gallery, and is open by appointment. Susan hopes that others feel a sense of calm, coupled with high energy and a splash of mystery, when viewing her work. “The beauty of my abstract compositions is that people can ascribe their own meaning to the works, but I always share my inspiration for each piece with each buyer. Each piece is a fusion of experience and emotion that I paint using my soul to capture the harmony of our world, which is so mind-blowingly beautiful,” she adds. She says she’s paid for her vision, not for her labor. Susan contributes to local charities; in fact, a portion of proceeds from a recent solo exhibit went to Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia. She also Paints It Forward. If she could paint anything for the first time, Susan says it would be large-scale female portraits. “However, there are never enough hours in the day to paint everything in my painterly soul. I’m more interested in the searching than the finding.” reiser.susan@hotmail.com 610.755.5807 Instagram: cloud_nine_painter CloudNinePainter.com

Leading With LEED HANKIN GROUP INCORPORATES ENERGY, ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN PRACTICES ACROSS ALL FACETS OF PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
BUILDING GREENER MEANS BUILDING BETTER WITH HANKIN GROUP, A PREMIER DEVELOPER DEFINED BY QUALITY, SUSTAINABILITY AND AESTHETICS. Hankin Group teams focus on building sustainable developments and creating projects that not only last, but also have a lower impact on the environment. “Sustainable building practices are a responsibility, not an accolade, and mean greater health, economic, and environmental benefits for all,” says Lance Hillegas, Hankin Group vice president of design and sustainable development. Some of the building practices implemented by Hankin Group teams include using recycled and locally sourced building materials, creating efficient stormwater management systems that allow water to be stored and used for irrigation, and incorporating low-emitting materials for interior construction that keep air cleaner. from third-party rating systems based on several qualifications. The LEED system consists of four levels of certifications: certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. LEED designations are based on factors, such as sustainable sites; water efficiency; materials; resources; energy; atmosphere; innovation in design; indoor environmental quality and regional priority. The goal of LEED is to reduce environmental impacts and improve quality of life. Environmentally conscience building creates spaces that have lower energy costs, and are healthier to work and live in. LEED-certified buildings benefit the environment in numerous ways, including reducing construction waste, incorporating recycled materials into buildings, and using cleaning products that are less harmful to the environment. For buildings to earn an Energy Star Certification, they must meet energy performance standards set by the EPA. This certificate is given annually, so buildings must maintain their high performance to keep their certification. Examples of Hankin Group’s buildings with LEED certifications include Keva Flats, Meridian at Eagleview in Exton, 530 Herman O West Dr., and 3901 Walnut St., in Philadelphia. “We’re also dedicated to providing high quality, award-winning, residential living spaces within our unique communities that immediately welcome you with a sense of place,” says Lance. Hankin Group is known for incorporating a diverse range of traditional neighborhood features into walkable communities, including notable portions of land devoted to parks, recreation and open space. NEW, PROMISING EXAMPLE: KEVA FLATS One of the prime, recent Hankin Apartments projects is a 21-acre, five-building community that contains 240 units in the Downingtown-Exton area, on Business Route 30 just west of Route 100. Called Keva Flats, the $60 million development provides a mix of one-, twoand three-bedroom units in four-story structures with covered parking. What stands out about these new apartments is that the development blends natural materials with floor-toceiling windows, bold angles and open floorplans. In addition, these apartments feature modern finishes, such as quartz counters, tile back splashes, plank flooring and Grohe faucets.

The development is extremely walk-able, with a sidewalk going along Lincoln Highway to connect Keva Flats to the Whiteland Town Center. Another sidewalk travels Waterloo Boulevard to meet up with Miller Park. Eventually, Hankin managers hope to link the sidewalks to the Chester County trail system. Keva Flats includes a clubhouse with a coffee bar, business lounge and a multi-sport simulator. It also has a fitness center and yoga studio, a private dining room, a club room with demo kitchen and a rooftop terrace with fire pits, grill and seating. There’s a sport court that offers basketball, tennis and volleyball. Adjacent to the sport court is an outdoor pool with grilling stations, as well as a dog park. “This was and is an exciting project for us,” says Becky Reeves, vice president of operations at Hankin Apartments. “At Keva Flats, our goal is to develop a sense of place and simplify life.” HankinGroup.com HankinApartments.com

OBSERVE EARTH D AY YO U R WAY ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON
EVERY YEAR AROUND APRIL 22, PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS, LITERALLY, AND TAKE STOCK OF ECO-FRIENDLY PRACTICES AND ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES. Some deliberately take action to support the “Green Amendment” in the Pennsylvania state constitution, which is viewed as containing the strongest environmental rights amendment in the country. The state’s constitution Article 1, Section 27, states: “The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment.” Though the days of actual observances vary by group, the April 22 date was founded in the United States by US Sen. Gaylord Nelson in 1970. It’s based on the principal that humans are caretakers, or trustees, of natural resources that should be conserved and maintained for the benefit of all people. For ideas about observing Earth Day locally, see the Calendar department of this month’s edition. To tap into a citywide celebration to educate and inspire sustainability in the region, consider Pittsburgh Earth Day. Honoring the transformation from Pittsburgh’s Steel City past to a thriving home for green innovation, LEEDcertified development, farm-to-table initiatives and environmentally-friendly events, Pittsburgh Earth Day honors the collaboration of businesses, community organizations and green purveyors. To join the activities or to get ideas, visit PittsburghEarthDay.org. 34
