FIGHTING FOR OUR
Communities FEMALE FIREFIGHTERS TAKE ON THE PHYSICAL CHALLENGES OF CRISIS ASSISTANCE
Amanda Marimon

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | May 2020
IT REQUIRES A RARE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL GRIT TO OFFER AID IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. The fire service is an integral part of our townships’ functionality because not only do our firefighters handle the structure fires that crop up from time to time, they are also trained emergency medical technicians and medics, able to respond in a wide variety of emergency situations. Firefighting is a profession in which women are often underrepresented, but West Chester and Liberty both have multiple female firefighters. They work hard alongside their male counterparts every week to care for people at their most desperate moments, meeting the same standards and taking the same trainings as their male co-workers. These women, and all female firefighters of the past, are pioneers, normalizing work in the fire service for all people. Here are just a few insights into the complexity and passion behind their work.
ORIGIN STORIES For many of our female firefighters, the fire service wasn’t their first career. Some have come from nursing, office jobs, and other labor but then made the move when they felt that something was missing in their careers. Amanda Marimon, a firefighter in Liberty Township’s service, transitioned from an insurance-field job. “It was a big thing for me: going from a sit-down job,

be doing, but it was a big eye-opener to see what we can do for people. It has been such a great experience.” Alysha Lawson, a firefighter with West Chester Township, left behind work in a pharmacy to pursue her EMT training and Fire Academy.
Carmen Kuehn, who has had a nearly 30-year career with the West Chester Township service, has watched as things have changed for female firefighters in particular. “Being in the fire service, when I started, there were 2% females, and there are only 4% now, so we’ve doubled it in 30

THE REWARDS Amanda’s connection to the fire service emerges out of a recognition that everyone has days when they need help, while Brooke likes how much strength the fire service gives her. “The helpfulness aspect is important to me,” Brooke says. “When they call us, they expect that we’ll solve their problems, and it’s rewarding to be a problem solver.” Terrah Stuckey works in the Liberty Township service, and she sees firefighting as empowering her to have an impact. “I think for me, it’s seeing that I can intervene and help,” says Terrah. “There’s so much we do that isn’t medical that helps people. They don’t know how to deal with an emergency under pressure, but we have the calm mindset to handle the situation. We can reassure the family members; that’s a really cool thing to be able to do.” They also mention that being able to support their teams and be supported in return makes the work meaningful and positive for them.

physical strength and technique over their years in the service, their experiences of learning to trust and work with co-workers, and learning to maintain their calm in tough situations. “One thing they hounded us about at the Academy was to listen to the Officers and anyone who has been doing this job longer,” says Alysha. “They have words of advice and greater wisdom that, if you are willing to listen, they are willing to pass on to you.” The firefighters unanimously pointed out that entering fire service may feel daunting, but they have a reminder for everyone pursuing this career, especially young women. “If this is what you want to do, don’t ever give up,” says Carmen. “Don’t let anyone tell you can’t do it, and keep your integrity, because the biggest thing is knowing who you are and what you want.”

JUDI BOYKO BUTLER COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR ROLE? I oversee and administer through a team of talented public servants, the programmatic and operational functions and services of the Butler County Board of Commissioners’ departments. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, HOBBIES OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. I am an avid reader and runner who loves her husband and four cats dearly. My husband is a great man whose patience and wisdom grounds me and nourishes my soul to dig deeper. WHAT IS SOMETHING CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR JOB? What is challenging is actually what motivates me the most and that is the depth and scope of the complexity of the issues and varying interests of the stakeholders. Facing a problem with multiple interests and varying objectives to achieve is what inspires me to lean in and work hard to develop solutions which advance the greater good and public interest. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED ON YOUR JOURNEY IN YOUR ROLE? Talk less; listen more. A lesson I am still learning. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Random acts of kindness which we see every day if we look for it. WHAT LIFE LESSON COULD YOU IMPART TO OUR READERS? Be bold, but with compassion and kindness. 22

K AY L A B O U R G E O I S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT REGISTERED NURSE AT WEST CHESTER HOSPITAL WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR ROLE? Any given shift, I spend most of my time triaging patients, assessing them, assisting doctors and getting labs. I’m figuring out what is going on, why they are there and what we can do to treat them. WHAT IS SOMETHING CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR JOB? I’d say the thing that is most challenging is also the reason why I wanted to work in the ER. And that’s to be with people at their worst moments and to try to make it better. WHAT MEDICAL ADVANCEMENT DO YOU MOST WANT TO SEE IN YOUR LIFETIME? Affordable health care and more affordable medications. I would also love to see if we could determine what causes Alzheimer’s and if we could slow it down or reverse it. WHAT LIFE LESSON COULD YOU IMPART TO OUR READERS? I think the biggest lesson truly is just that you’re here for a good time not a long time. So live your life, tell people you love them, do what makes you happy, because you don’t know what will happen tomorrow. WHAT DO YOU MOST WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR OCCUPATION THAT THEY MIGHT NOT ALREADY? Violence toward healthcare workers is really rising whether that’s verbal assault, or physical assault and people don’t realize that. Just remember that everyone you interact with is human too. And none of us know what kind of day the other person is having, so just treat everyone with kindness.

Moms on a Mission LOCAL ORGANIZATION CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS TO VOLUNTEER TOGETHER

WHEN JAIME PIENING WAS A YOUNG MOM, SHE REMEMBERS SITTING AT HOME NURSING A BABY, LISTENING TO ONE CHILD THROWING A TANTRUM AND THE OTHER ASKING FOR HELP IN THE BATHROOM. “I was feeling overwhelmed...I was supposed to be [a full-time at-home mom] but at the same time I wanted to contribute in a different way,” Jaime says. That’s how Moms on a Mission was born. Jaime now leads hundreds of families around Liberty Township and beyond in volunteering outside the home right alongside their kids. The first mission started by grabbing a friend, now co-founder Emily Parks, and visiting a Lebanon nursing home. “I created a Facebook page (@moms410), came up with a name, and it was a way to keep myself accountable. There were other moms out there feeling the way I was,” Jaime says. Some parents are hesitant to involve their young children in volunteering, but Jaime reassures them. “I tell new moms my kid is shy and it’s okay. You just keep coming back and you’ll see the progress.” Moms on a Mission is fulfilling a need Jaime didn’t see being met anywhere else in the community. “Let’s just be real, moms are not going to get a babysitter to go volunteer,” Jaime says. “Most of what we need to do, our kids are there with us, so I wanted to provide an opportunity to take out the grunt work [of finding kid-friendly volunteer opportunities]. I wanted to make it an easy ‘yes’ for moms to serve with their kids.” Most of the group consists of preschool and school-aged children, pregnant moms looking to get connected before their baby is even born and mothers of teens, as well as grandparents. Parents who are busiest are often the ones who volunteer the most. Since their first nursing home trip in the summer of 2017, the group is nearing its 75th volunteer mission. They made $21,000 this year at an annual fundraiser (led by Finance Director Kate HinesGuggenbiller) which was donated to Warm Welcomes Foster Care Outreach. In addition to the sense of community the group provides to moms, it is educational to kids as well. Jaime seeks to broaden kids’ perspectives through volunteering. “I wanted to give them a world perspective. Not everyone has what we have. I wanted to create an awareness with them,” she says. Jaime jokes that parents often say, “Eat your food, there are starving children,” but it means nothing to kids.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
“They learn by experience. This gives them a chance to see what it’s like,” she says. One of the organizations Moms on a Mission works with is Hands against Hunger in Sharonville, where they ship meals and water filtration packets to third-world countries. Volunteers get to see how the cool water packets work and sample the food. “Kids have the opportunity to see it, understand what happens when you drink it and taste the food they are packaging. They have a tangible experience of what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes,” Jaime says. The group also delivers food to needy families in Hamilton, who are virtually homeless and living in cheap motels. Jaime used this opportunity to teach her daughter about how some people live, as there are whole families in one room, and kids walking out without shoes to receive food. Jaime’s daughter, Elle (age 9), says she’s learned a lot about how other people live, the problems they have and what can be done to help. “I feel very proud because [my mom] is the leader of it and I like volunteering with my mom because it makes me feel more comfortable trying new things,” Elle says. She looks forward to working at an animal shelter in the near future. In addition to helping with the COVID-19 outbreak, Jaime is now assisting others looking to start charters in other towns, and feels rewarded when she sees how the mission is spreading.
