BADASS WOMEN E N T R E P R E N E U R S Kelly Nixon and Meagan Lang were sharing a bottle of wine and business woes one evening when a groundbreaking idea came to mind. Kelly, the owner of Nixon & Co. They have seen the community and business landscape evolve, and on January 6th they realized it was finally time. The

Their goal is certainly not to put down men, but

This experience has revealed a striking reality to Chelsea- so many women don’t feel whole. “Women, especially mothers, often feel lost, or like something is missing,” Chelsea says. “It’s largely due to this negative stigma that if you spend time on yourself, you are selfish.” This tribe of women are finding each other and themselves through Chelsea’s own journey. LOUIE & MELANIE LEE The #1 Coldwell Banker Team in Castle Rock.

To Our Neighbors We truly live in a wonderful community here in Castle Rock and it has never been more evident as it is now!

In this time of focus and reflection it has been inspiring to see families and neighbors working together for the good of us all. Rallying behind the essential workers and local businesses of our town through good deeds and financial support has been inspiring. Melanie and I are so grateful to live here and to be reminded of the wonderful people that make Castle Rock what it is. As real estate professionals our focus has been keeping our families and clients safe. This is taken into consideration in every aspect of our business. Currently our experience has been that homes are still being sold, Sellers and Buyers still have to move for work or other reasons. Our team has implemented tools such as Virtual Showings and Video Conferencing to keep everyone safe but still allow for those needing to move an opportunity to continue with their plans. Though sometimes challenging, we are committed to doing whatever is necessary to work through this. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have about the current market. We are in this together Castle Rock, Thank You for all you are doing!

Lesley Gibson, the President of the Elevation chapter, became a member when her oldest daughter, a current sophomore in college, was in the eighth grade. She now participates in NCL with her 17-year-old daughter Josie. Over the years, Josie has come to find that the time spent with her daughters at NCL is sacred. “Teenagers are difficult. They typically don’t want to be around family or parents,” Lesley says. “With NCL, it’s just her and I.” For Lesley, NCL opened her eyes to the sheer amount of nonprofits and community organizations in Douglas County. Prior to joining the Elevation chapter, Lesley thought that the majority of places to serve were closer to Denver. That was not the case. “Once we started digging, we were amazed at everything that was right in our backyard.” One of their favorites is Rylie’s ARK (Acts of Random Kindness). The nonprofit was formed to honor a local 12-year-old girl who died in a freak accident in 2017. Many of the girls in NCL’s class of 2022 and 2023 knew Riley and have a personal passion for the organization. NCL has shown Josie the impact her own presence can make in the world. When serving at the Food Bank of the Rockies, she met and conversed with a man recovering from alcoholism. He shared his story with Josie and let her know the profound effect the kindness of volunteers had on his sobriety. “I saw the difference it made in his life and it changed me,” Josie said. “You can start with NCL in the 7th grade. I think it’s a really good experience for girls to see the impact they can have from a young age.” Each grade level of girls consists of a president, secretary, treasurer, vice president of philanthropy, and a vice president of programs. The girls, essentially a mini board of directors, choose their activities by approving motions and documenting the minutes. In addition to service, the girls plan social events and cultural experiences, such as going to museums and theaters. How do you respond to poverty you’ve never witnessed before? What do you do when you notice someone from school getting supplies from a food bank? NCL has shown girls and their mothers realities that, according to Lesley, “open up a lot of teachable moments.” Elevate: to raise or lift something to a higher position. This simple definition embodies much of what the National Charity League’s Elevation chapter aims to do. As long as they exist, this chapter of women commit to uplifting each other and their community. CityLifestyle.com/CastleRock

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or — yes, even avocados — you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters.

CULINARY CREATIONS (CONTINUED)

In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.

Red

For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries

Purple

Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets

Green

Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas

Orange

Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches

White

White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips

Black

Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries

The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

FOR THE BEST ADVICE ON THIS TOPIC, WE WENT STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE – REAL MOMS. We caught up with local moms that seem to not only be great moms but are also great contributors of our community This group of moms shared what the most meaningful gifts are to them, and their answers were heartwarming. As simple as it may sound, remember that the best gift you can give your mother (or wife) is the gift of your love – no matter how you demonstrate it on Mother’s Day. Ultimately, moms are pretty easy to please. Take the time to tell her you love her and give her a break from her “Mom duties.” P.S. a little pampering never hurts, either.
