welcome, summer

PAUL DYKES

FATHER’S DAY IS ON JUNE 21ST. DO YOU HAVE ANY FATHER’S DAY TRADITIONS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? My dad and I used to play a round of golf every Father’s

Day. Since his passing, I have carried on that tradition with

my son who has taken a liking to the sport.

We Understand Commitment

IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE THIS SUMMER AND ALL RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL WERE LIFTED, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

You can rely on Edward Jones for one-on-one attention, our quality-focused investment philosophy and straight talk about your financial needs. To learn more, call today.

I would take my son on the Walt Disney World trip that we had to cancel due to the coronavirus.

FATHER’S DAY TRADITIONS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

Our Father’s Day tradition is based on telling my kids that the best Father’s Day gift to me would be just getting together with the family. We all gather together each year to enjoy Kansas City barbecue and each other’s company (I do, however, expect real presents too.)

I look forward to Father’s Day when my dad comes into town and four generations of the Sandy family get together at the same time.

IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE THIS SUMMER AND ALL RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL WERE LIFTED, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? If I could go anywhere this summer, it would be to Italy. My wife, Becky, and I had a great trip to Sicily arranged for last April, but the recent circumstances caused it to be canceled.

IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE THIS SUMMER AND ALL RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL WERE LIFTED, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I would go out to dinner at a local restaurant with my family, and then to another restaurant with friends. Spending time with family and friends and supporting our local restaurants is something I’m looking forward to this summer!

down and ride bikes every day, hike, fish and try games we didn’t know we would enjoy so much. In the midst of the obvious devastation of the past few months, there has been a part of this time period that has been a positive experience for many families that needed to slow down and enjoy life together in a different way—a time that was reminiscent of our own childhoods when things were a little simpler. Growing up, my family had a lake cabin in Council Grove. If we weren’t at the 3&2 baseball fields for my brothers’ games, we were at that cabin. There wasn’t anything fancy about the place— actually quite the contrary, but to me it was the greatest place on earth. We spent endless summer days swimming off the dock, floating in tubes, playing volleyball and croquet, laying under a shade tree or driving into town to get an

The best part of being at the lake was not having an agenda. We just enjoyed time as a family doing ordinary things. So much of this time period recently has reminded me of those days. Although I have greatly missed watching my kids play the sports they love and the activities we are used to doing, I am looking forward to a summer of spending quality time with my family enjoying the simple things in life like a fire-pit on a starry night, and maybe I can talk them into a game of charades. Happy summer! Love Angela

Back to the Basics CODY WHEELOCK DEVELOPED THE CORE PROGRAM, ALLOWING STUDENTS TO EXPLORE A CLASSICAL STYLE OF ART BY FIRST LEARNING BASIC SKILLS.

AN ARTIST AND ART INSTRUCTOR, WHEELOCK’S TEACHING CAREER BEGAN IN NEBRASKA WHERE HE TAUGHT IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING IN OMAHA AND FREMONT, AT THE JOSLYN ART MUSEUM AND EVENTUALLY OPENED A HOME STUDIO TO MEET DEMAND FOR ART CLASSES, ALL WHILE PRODUCING HIS OWN COMMISSION WORK FOR CLIENTS. In order to focus on private instruction and his commission work, Wheelock and his family decided to move to Lee’s Summit last summer and opened Fount Atelier of Fine Art.

12

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | June 2020

“Students meet here in my studio on a weekly basis and work through their own pace on this curriculum that I call the Core Program,” he says. “We’ve been doing it for a few months now, classes have continued to grow and students are seeing fantastic results.” His Core Program curriculum is built around the 19th-century French academic method and is divided into eight modules. It’s sequential, so students start with basic skills, such as how to properly sharpen a pencil, and work their way up. Wheelock begins with an emphasis on execution. “It’s all about how do we actually create something that’s made with a lot of skill because one turn off people have sometimes with contemporary art is they’ll look at it and they’ll say, ‘Well, my kid could do that,’” he says. “We need to make sure that when we create something, we’re doing it with skill. So many teachers nowadays want to push the creativity part of it and the expression part of it. But 100, 150 years ago they actually pushed the skill building part first because it was their opinion that in order to really have no limits to what you could express and be creative with—you had to actually have the tools to do it first.” While students enrolled in the Core Program meet weekly, either in-person or online, Font Atelier also offers workshops and drop-in sessions for those interested in less of a time commitment. In addition to teaching, Wheelock does commission work for clients in the classical style. He acknowledges that portrait photography can capture a subject’s personality but something different is captured in a painted portrait. “A properly executed portrait could literally last centuries—it’s something that could be passed down as a family heirloom,” he says. “So the uniqueness of it, and almost the timeless quality of it, is one of the things I love about doing commissioned work.” No matter a student’s skill level, Wheelock believes three things are necessary to be a successful artist: a positive attitude, perseverance and being coachable. “Growing up as the ‘art kid,’ I always loved to draw and paint stuff,” Wheelock says. “It never really seemed all that intimidating to me. But as I got into teaching, I really

“ We n e e d t o m a ke s u r e t h a t when we create something, w e’r e d o i n g i t w i t h s k i l l . ”

came to understand how... when I went into a math class, to me that was like, ‘Oh god, here we go,’ because math was not my strong suit—I’m very right-brained. But people are that way in an art class sometimes because it’s very uncomfortable, and no one wants to look bad. So it’s just very intimidating. What I always tell students when I talk to them is that you may look at this artwork and think, ‘I can never do that.’ But guaranteed — they could.” CONTINUED >

said he did not realize there was such a scenic area in this part of the city until he began exploring the area. He also said if one is trying to bike from Lee’s Summit to the stadiums or visa versa, there was previously no good route for a biker to take. Additionally, the trail provides the possibility of one biking from Lee’s Summit to the stadiums and then using public transportation to further access the rest of Kansas City. That might be impressive, but the plans and hope for the trail do not end there.

If you’re open minded to the most advanced, most permanent solution to looking & feeling your best then call now to find out more!

The long-term goal for the trail is for it to continue southeast from Lee’s Summit through Greenwood and into Pleasant Hill, which will allow it to connect with the Rock Island spur of the Katy Trail. This will require another eight miles of trail, and those plans are all still in the conceptual stages and could take several years to complete. Yet when the trail is finally completed, there will be a trail system based on old railroad lines that will stretch uninterrupted from Kansas City all the way across the state to the St. Louis area. While we are all figuring out our “new normal,” frequenting the Rock Island Trail and enjoying local scenery can be a refreshing part of life going forward for Lee’s Summit residents.

3 Ways Business Assets Can Be Divided In Divorce Proceedings Divorce presents many financial concerns, but it can be especially worrying for business owners. Individuals invest more than time and money in entrepreneurial endeavors. They also put in a generous amount of blood, sweat and tears to bring their aspirations to life. With your marriage ending, your business may feel like your center • of gravity right now. The worry that you may lose control of it in the divorce may be keeping you up at night. Here is a breakdown of the most common options for dividing business assets. The method appropriate for you will depend on a number of factors, including how much of your business qualifies as marital property, how involved your spouse is in your endeavor and what precautions you • took ahead of time. Options for asset division: • Keep the business and buy out your spouse. Unless a prenup22

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | June 2020

tial agreement or other legal contract exists that locks your spouse out of the business, at least some portion of your business is going to qualify as marital property. That being said, the cleanest way to divide property and keep your business to yourself is to buy out your spouse’s interest. Sell the business. If you there is no way to buy out your spouse-and working with them as a business partner is not a viable option, you may consider selling the business and splitting the proceeds. Obviously, this is not ideal for someone who wants to continue in the business. But if negotiations do not go as you hope, this is a possible plan B. Share the business and the income. Peaceful co-ownership is rare but works for some spouses who part amicably. It allows both spouses to benefit

from the business in an ongoing capacity. However, this option might include emotional challenges along the way. Spouses with complex assets, like businesses, may have more to lose in a divorce. However, a legal professional can help the individuals involved make the right choices for their futures. On the bright side, business owners also possess the tools and means to launch a successful new beginning. AS LEE’S SUMMIT’S ONLY CATHOLIC K-8 GRADE SCHOOL, OUR LADY OF THE PRESENTATION STANDS OUT BUT NEVER STANDS ALONE. “We are a community, and families realize the importance of this now more than ever,” says Principal Jodi Briggs along with Assistant Principal Marianne Organ. “We pray together, learn together, grow together and take care of each other.” Like other Missouri schools, OLP closed for the remainder of the school year during the pandemic. When the school closure order was first issued, the OLP students were on spring break, but the teachers didn’t get much of one. They returned to school early to learn the educational platforms for remote learning that continued through the last day of school on May 15. “Like anything new, there were challenges and hurdles to overcome,” Briggs and Organ say, “but the OLP community has been amazing in working together to ensure the best possible learning experience in the given situation.” The school also adapted its graduation for 8th graders held on May 14 to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions while still providing a memorable ceremony for its graduating class. “We pray our doors will be open to welcome students in August, but we will prepare for what might be,” they add. “We’ll review and evaluate what was successful and improve any areas in case remote learning presents itself again in the future.” With an enrollment of 472 students, OLP feeds into St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School built in 2017. OLP also receives students from the church’s Early Childhood Center (ages 1-5) which currently enrolls 220 children. Briggs and Organ say they’re proud of OLP’s faith-based education and high academic standards as evidenced by its national recognition as a Blue Ribbon School by the Dept. of Education. They’re also proud how the school came together with the Lee’s Summit community in 2013 to win $500,000 in the Kohl’s Campaign. “Most importantly, we’re proud how we work together for the best interest of the students,” they say. “We have minimal staff turnover, strong, steady enrollment and families who make sacrifices to send their students here. While we welcome students of all faiths, we provide a Catholic education that enables students to live their faith daily through religion class, weekly liturgies and organized school activities.” After 12 years as principal, Briggs plans to transition to St. Michael High School in the fall as its full-time principal, and Organ will step into the role of principal at OLP after sharing duties with Briggs this year. Both women are lifelong area Catholic educators. Briggs taught upper middle school at OLP for four years while earning a master’s degree in School Leadership. She became OLP principal in 2008. Organ, a graduate of Avila College, began her teaching career at Archbishop O’Hara High School teaching English and theology and served as assistant

FAITH REFLECTIONS (CONTINUED) are the best way to start the day. And I always love when our graduates return and share their high school experiences.”

BRIGGS AND ORGAN GIVE FOUR REASONS WHY THEY RECOMMEND OLP: 1. “Our STAFF gives 110 percent and are here because they want to

be. They love their students, provide a great learning experience and are examples of faith in action. 2. The STUDENTS are the best. They work hard, keep us laughing and make OLP a vibrant community. 3. The FAMILIES are generous with their time and talent and are the backbone of our school. 4. pasta primavera INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup heavy cream + 1 teaspoon lemon zest + 2 tablespoons olive oil (Cervasi preferred) + 1/4 cup minced onion + 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced or chopped + bundle sprigs asparagus, trimmed of ends and thinly sliced on the bias + 2 cups sugar snap peas, halved + 1 cup frozen peas + 1/2 cup chicken stock + 1 pound fettuccine (Cervasi preferred) + 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, plus some to pass at the table + Kosher salt and pepper METHOD Bring a large pot of water to a boil for the pasta. In a small saucepot, bring cream and lemon zest to a simmer. Simmer 3 minutes to thicken then remove from heat. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with olive oil. Add onion and garlic, cook until fragrant. Add asparagus, snap peas, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir and toss to cook until tender-crisp. Don’t overcook. Add the stock. Salt boiling water liberally (about 2-3 tablespoons of kosher salt) and cook pasta until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup liquid then drain. Off the heat, toss pasta, frozen peas (they will cook with the heat from the pasta), other vegetables, infused cream, and grated cheese. Add some of the reserved pasta water if needed to thin the sauce. Important, taste and add more salt and pepper as needed. Serve in warm bowls, topped with additional Parmigiano-Reggiano. LAUREN'S QUICK TIPS: + Cheese is key in this dish, so be sure your wedge of parmesan says Parmigiano-Reggiano to be sure you’re getting the real deal. + To make it vegetarian, sub vegetable stock for the chicken. + Use any vegetables you’d like but don’t overcook them. + For a winter primavera, sub roasted butternut squash, red onions, red peppers, and red cabbage for the spring vegetables. EASY ICE CREAM PARTY WITH LEANN PARKER OF SILVERTOOTH FARM HOME ARTICLE LEANN PARKER

CREATING A STYLED PARTY TABLE DOES NOT NEED TO BE EXPENSIVE OR COMPLICATED TO BE BEAUTIFUL. In my opinion, setting up a styled table only requires two things. One—all food is taken out of its original packaging by placing them in containers from your own kitchen or thrifting what you don’t have. Two— elevation is used to display food by using cake stands, bowls that are flipped upside-down, or food risers to make extra serving space without needing a larger table. Both of these tricks will instantly create a beautiful party display without much expense or effort.
