Happy Father’s Day! Gentlemen, you have waited patiently for your turn. Last month, we brought you our Ladies issue—it is ladies first, after all—and this month, we present our “Gents” issue, celebrating men in our communities.

Here at Yorba Linda Lifestyle, we are always inspired by what the men in our communities do and create. We truly have some talented gentlemen in our midst, and we have taken this issue to highlight some of them and learn from their experiences in life.

FATHER’S DAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATE THE FATHERS, STEP FATHERS, AND OTHER MALE ROLE MODELS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR LIVES. On June 21st, 2020, be sure to let the fatherly figures in your life know just how important they are to you!

The very first celebration of Father’s Day in the United States occurred 112 years ago in 1908. When a mining accident killed hundreds of men and left over a thousand children without fathers, a West Virginia woman named Grace Golden Clayton organized a service honoring the fathers at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. The remembrance gained popularity in Washington state when Sonora Smart Dodd popularized her own father’s birthday on June 5th as “Fathers’ Day” and presented it to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA. Although Congress first attempted to establish Father’s Day as a national holiday in 1913, it did not catch on until Richard Nixon officially established it on the third Sunday of June in 1972.

Not every man is a father, but every man who cares for a child, loves and guides them, protects and teaches them is the best kind of father one could ever ask for. Father's Day is for biological fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, and other men who set a good example and have a heart of gold. If there’s a man who stepped up in a big way for you or your kids, let them know. Try one of these fun ideas to share your gratitude this year.

1. Get outside and celebrate the first day of Summer: Not only is June 21st, 2020 Father’s Day, it is in the same weekend as the Summer Solstice! Soak up the sunshine by inviting them to share with you their favorite outdoor activity. This holiday is a great reason to suggest hiking, fishing, kayaking, lounging on the beach, or offer to be his sous chef in the kitchen or on the barbeque.

2. Make him his favorite meal: What better way to show your appreciation for the paternal figure in your life than by cooking him something special! If you have the culinary skills, try cooking his favorite meal, make him breakfast in bed, or bake him a special dessert.

Although store-bought cards are a quick and easy grab, no one else is better than you to make a hand-made card with a special sentiment, silly picture, or a funny joke you cannot get anywhere else.

4. Go digital: Make a video on your phone and get the whole family in on the action. Create and send him a personalized item using Shutterfly or Things Remembered online. Use Zoom or FaceTime to video chat on Father’s Day to tell him how much he means to you.

5. Buy local: Send him a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant or store (and support a small business!).

every summer and on school breaks. “I’d sweep, wash equipment, and move freight to earn some money and to help out my dad. He’s a generous man who has always been there for friends and family in need of something to eat or a place to call home for a bit which has really made an impact on me and our entire family.”

Over the years, the elder children grew up and out of the Piantanida home, but it grew once more when Danny’s parents fostered and then adopted two infants, a brother and a sister, who are now adults 20 years his junior and both work with Danny at American Window Company. “I am very proud I get to work amongst my little brother and sister. We are 20 years apart, but that doesn’t stop us from having fun and playing pranks on each other at work. And knowing that family is there to take great care of customers every single day is just icing on the cake!”

THE CHERRY RED, ONE-ROOM BUILDING ON THE CORNER OF CASA LOMA AND IMPERIAL HIGHWAY HAS BEEN HOME TO BOY SCOUT TROOP 99 FOR THE PAST 102 YEARS AND HOLDS THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY CHARTERED TROOP WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. It was first established in 1916 at The Packing House, then the house was moved to its current location in 1976, adjacent to Hurless Barton Park and the Yorba Linda Community Center.

Scouting at the community level is open to Cub Scouts in Kindergarten through 4th grades, and the Boy Scouts from 5th grade through high school. It is run by volunteering parents and their scouts who co-create learning opportunities for skills development, outdoor education, badge earning, fundraising, and socializing. For over a hundred years men and their sons joined the Boy Scouts to spend quality time and instill the values of the Boy Scout oath: to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Despite a long history of traditional patriarchal leadership, men have broadened their roles in work and family. A broader vision of who could participate opened the door to more inclusivity so that mothers and daughters were not merely supporting their Scout sons: girls were asking to be let in. THIS FINE ARTIST, BUSINESSMAN, FAMILY MAN, AND GOSPEL MUSIC LOVER HAS IT ALL WITH DETERMINATION AND GOOD FASHION SENSE. As a kid I had always loved to draw, but I never took formal classes. When I applied to art school, my father didn’t approve because he felt there was no future in art. I prepared a portfolio by myself, and applied to only one school: Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles where I was accepted and graduated with a double major in videography and photography.

Although my father was not initially supportive of art as my career, he personally faced the challenges of an artist trying to support a family. My father, Dave Chang, started a music career as the main vocalist for one of the biggest bands in Korea. He tried his best to support our family and taught me the values of being a man with morals and having a good heart for others. He had to give up his music career to give us a better life in the US, and worked day and night to support our family.

Now I am married with two beautiful children and he is a good grandpa. Although he retired a few years ago he is still working as an Uber driver just because he feels the need to keep on going. Today we have our own YouTube channel singing father-son duet gospel covers.
